@dam What do you prefer e-book or book?
I like both. Both have their own advantages.
I don't why, but I can never focus on e-book!
I don't like our tablets much, actually, but it's what we have right now.
@Freddy Kindle or paperwhite or paperlike devices may help.

I am reading Shantaram from about a month

@Freddy Nice!

@dam not nice. It is hell lot of time for 1 book
@Freddy We have a saying (in Thai), Slow, slow gets a beautiful scimitar.
:P
@dam what is scimiitar?
06:47
Something like that.
The proverb shares the same idea with Aesop's the Rabbit and the Tortoise.
slow and steady win the race
Yup!

@DamkerngT. hi

what are the questions will ask for java programmer who has 2 years of experince in java?
Hi!
That's ungrammatical.

@DamkerngT. yes, thats why i need your help.
It could mean a few things. I think it may be better if you tell me more about your idea for a bit.
It's clear that your keywords are "questions", "Java programmer(s?)", and "2 years of experience (in Java)".

What kinds of java questions will ask in infosys interview with two years of experience in java programming?
Will be asked
in an infosys interview -- (I don't like to abbreviate infosys that way much, but it's your choice.)
with two years of experience is dangling. It should modify "a programmer".
Another possible phrasing, which will make in more direct:
> What kinds of Java questions will they ask a programmer with two years of experience in Java in an infosys interview?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I have cited an example. Obviously, I am new here. Could you please point me to what you would consider a good, model answer? It will help me improve my answers going forward. And I don't just mean for this question, but any question in the forum. Many thanks! — Prashant 12 hours ago
What should I comment? Worried
I think J.R.'s posted a good meta post about citing.
He did.
But that won't suffice.
I wanna link to a good answer as well.
Ah, that means you found the post!
09:47
And citing thing IIRC was about questions.
Hullo @RuchirM! Welcome to the chatroom!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I think J.R. requests sources/citing/references from native speakers as well.
Hello there! I would like to know about candidate score in ongoing moderators' election. Is it keep on changing? If yes, then which criteria are responsible for its change? Thanks.
I can't remember which post, though.
Hello, @RuchirM!
Hello Sir, How are you both?
@RuchirM It's calculated based on some criteria.
09:49
@RuchirM I think we can't see the scores or voting results until the election ends.
That criteria may change.
I'm great, thanks! You?
@DamkerngT. Candidate score, not votes for the candidate.
@RuchirM Hello! Just "hello" is fine for me. :-)
Very well, Sir. Pleasure to chat with both of you.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh, I see. That's a little different.

Q: How to find out our candidate score

EkaNomination phase for the election of moderator is underway and before nominating myself I would like to see my candidate score. Meanwhile only Manish has nominated himself for the election and his candidate score is like this candidate score 20/40 reputation 7k moderation badges: ...

IMO candidate score isn't important at all.
Meta activity and reviewing are two of the most vital aspects that show if one can become a good moderator.
They're not effectively included in the candidate score.
True Sir. Anyway, all the best to you and thanks a lot. Bye for now.
It's nice to see you here! Hope to see you again soon! o/
Sure Sir. Bye for now.
My pleasure, Sir.

Q: Submitting Answers that merely answer the question

J.R.Lately I've noticed quite a few answers that provide an answer to the O.P.'s question, but provide no supporting information. Sometimes, comments are left, asking for more information; other times, these answers have been flagged by users, and the mod team has converted some of these answers in...

09:58
Bingo!
I'm afraid I don't think there's a canonical meta post about how to post a good answer, yet. I think as long as you cite examples and sources to back your answers up and write them as long as it would take for a good answer to the OP's question (but not too long) your answers would innately be good ones. :) As another note, it would be helpful to take a look at this meta post. — inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M 1 min ago
BTW @Dam what does porb mean?
Hello Sir. I need your help.
Urban dictionary, as always, relates it to blessing.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Not sure. Problem? Probably?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh, that's a typo-related word.
10:03
@DamkerngT. Dunno.
@RuchirM What is it?
@RuchirM Ask away. (answers not guaranteed :P)
I am a non-native speaker and I want to improve my vocabulary as well as grammar. Can you suggest me the best online sources for the same? In addition, I want to improve my speaking. What would you suggest me?
Hmm, vocab.
Do you read articles?
Vocabulary and speaking are two different things.
Speaking will only improve if you speak a lot.
10:06
That's right Sir. Right now, I am using OALD, Merriam Webster and Dictionary.com for improving vocabulary. Actually, I am a content writer and a blogger, so I go through many articles in a day.
@RuchirM Are you preparing yourself for a proficiency test or something (like GMAT, TOEFL, and so on)?
Ahh
@Ruchir do you have someone to speak English to where you live?
I don't have anyone proficient enough in English to speak to me regularly, so I chat here instead.
I have given IELTS some 3 years' back, but since then my confidence level is decreasing while speaking.
Chatting and speaking and writing aren't the same things; I agree.
@RuchirM Language fluency is volatile.
Same here, Sir. My senior Sir is proficient in English, and I try to speak in English with him during office hours, but rest of the time I have to speak my mother tongue only.
Do you think that Spoken English Classes can help me?
10:09
I don't think you need a class.
A short chat with @Snail is worth a thousand of those classes. :)
It's not an easy question. Maybe it can. But it shouldn't be too expensive.
Oh. But, how is it possible on the daily basis?
That's an interesting question, too. Some learners use Skype, afaik.
@Ruchir native speakers often meet this chatroom. Speaking/chatting with them I find most helpful in evaluating my English and not letting it degrade.
But, this is only my opinion, you don't really need to. I mean, it's not an absolute requirement to maintain your spoken English.
10:11
Then there's Skype and stuff.
Yes.
Ok Sir. @DamkerngT. Do you suggest some resources?
None of the advice we give here is really "eat or die" thing.
Resources for what?
My own method focuses more on input rather than output.
And these days, English is literally everywhere!
@DamkerngT. English isn't in our kitchen. LIES!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Actually I feel ashamed for my poor English while speaking, therefore I need your guidance. Chatting is indeed a good method, but native speakers are way ahead of me, so how about having a teacher who can teach me from scratch?
10:14
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Take your phone there. :-)
Wow. Don't put yourself down. Your chatting shows your fluency.
@DamkerngT. It's not there.
@Ruchir you're proficient enough to chat with anyone here.
@RuchirM Judging from what you've "typed", I think expressing your idea is not big a problem for you.
Maybe you can be a bit more specific?
We also often make grammatical mistakes, and lots of them when we're sleepy or distracted or something.
Is it the accent? The grammar? I don't know.
But then one of us or one of the native speakers points out the ungrammaticality of what we said.
The grammar seems flawless up to now.
(And not that FLAWLESS)
10:17
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M My cat is running amok at the moment, BTW!
The normal flawless.
@DamkerngT. Has he seen Google's "I'm feeling playful"?
Correct Sir, now onward, I will start chatting on this wonderful platform at least for half an hour. I hope you won't mind if I disturb you on daily basis. :) Of course, accent is a big problem for me, but then I can improve my language through chatting. Thank you very much @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M and @DamkerngT. for your valuable guidance and prompt response.
Or maybe "I'm feeling hungry".
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Hmm... I don't think he has accessed my computers!
@DamkerngT. That's what you think.
@RuchirM Welcome!
Both meanings.
10:18
@RuchirM That's actually one of the purposes of this room.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Hehe!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Ya know, it's hard to know what a cat thinks!
Very right, Sir. Take care both of you. I'll meet you tomorrow again. By for now and thanks again.
@DamkerngT. Hmm, dunno, does he work with NSA?
@RuchirM You're welcome! Hope to see you again soon!
@RuchirM Charming chat I had with ya! See ya!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Not to my knowledge!
10:20
Then he does.

Q: take a screwdriver to something

Cookie MonsterExample: This book is based on two ideas. One is that the magic we understand is safer and more powerful than the magic we don't. This is not a hands-on how-to book. Don't look for any instructions for taking a screwdriver to this part or the other. But perhaps your knowing more about what's ...

@DamkerngT. BTW isn't the right robot message 404: DATA NOT FOUND?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It usually is 404 Not Found or 404 File Not Found`.
404 not found doesn't make sense.
Though our answers are right about the common expression about screwdriver, I think this specific use seems to be used a bit differently.
10:24
Again, I saw a reflection of what I wrote in my meta post.
"Don't look for any instructions for taking a screwdriver to this part or the other." ~ "Don't think I will give you the detailed instructions!"
But I'm only about 90% sure.
I think it kinda rhymes with what the answerers wrote; but I agree there's more to it than the normal meaning.
> Other things I'd like to see is more editing and voting. When This page is compared to its equivalents in other SE sites, it's telling me the ratio of editors/users on ELL is low. Same goes with voting.
Basically, I think the book wants the reader to get their hands dirty.
I think we need more context to make sure.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M nods -- I'm more concerned with our up-votes and down-votes.
10:27
That's a deeper problem.
I think I need to take a break. Be back later!
It didn't and couldn't and wouldn't fit in general statements.

Q: Which platform is better for non-native speakers to start with?

RuchirMAt times, I see some questions are migrated from ELU, and I find them interesting. Now being a non-native speaker and a somewhat active member of ELL, I am confused between these two platforms. My questions are: Which platform is better for non-native speakers who are not so good at Englis...

11:45
@Dam I thought I'd never say this; but as much as I don't have hope for my winning in the election, I also don't hope for one specific candidate to become a mod.
Their only reason for why they would be a good mod is "I'm a non-native speaker".
Frankly, their answers to the questionnaire were so bad I wanted to downvote.
But someone else went and downvoted already.
I don't know if you should do anything about it. I mean, it's not a debate.
So maybe it's better not to make it one.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh!
Well I went and took a look at ELU's election questionnaire.
As long as I'm still around, I will be Robot, who speaks for learners.
@DamkerngT. Funny thing is, after I commented and told them possible reasons for a downvote, my and Nathan's answer got a downvote as well.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That's actually nothing new, not here or on other stacks.
11:49
Hmm, after everyone answers, I'm gonna take stats and see how many candidates answer for chatrooms and how many don't.
I'm neither particularly for nor against whether this question is on-topic or not (because I believe that we can take it both ways), but I'd like to add my idea from a learner's point of view. It's true that ligature is typographical term, and that may make this question off-topic. On the other hand, many of our users, I believe, learn English for their education, and it's quite likely that they will run into the word ligature when they have to typeset their essays, theses, or dissertations in their academic writing, and knowing what ligature means can be useful or even crucial, imho. — Damkerng T. 4 hours ago
@DamkerngT. I know, that's why I'm not making assumptions.
I think a learner's voice should be something similar to that.
@DamkerngT. That question's answer stopped me from saying it's OT.
11:51
If we be really pedantic, that question is primarily opinion-based though.
Noone except Knuth would be able to answer it properly.
Hah!
Hmm... I think ligature was used before Knuth's TeX.
Then noone except Edison would be able to answer it properly.
But more importantly, perhaps most importantly, any learner shouldn't think that this site is only about him or her. We may share some difficulties, but our difficulties are not the same. So it's better to put ourselves in others' shoes, whenever possible.
@Dam is there a candidate who you wouldn't like to be a mod among the 10?
I'd better not answer that.
11:54
Just give me a number.
Like, I don't want 10 of them to become a mod.
'chatty comments ....cause we have chat' - well, just to say your heartfelt 'thank you', I don't think anyone would call/go for chat! Elvis' example is given keeping the 'state of mind' a new user has after being treated here. I never said he was right! Troll or not, I'm not sure but I see myself in many when treated harshly by the established users. If Elvis example involved you, consider that I've been the victim! Ruchir's point is valid - if this forum is for the learners (this means non-natives by large), why don't we have one in mods' team? Don't choose me, it's okay @inɒzɘm — Maulik V 4 mins ago
@Dam I'm getting really annoyed.
Skip it.
Transcend them.
"After being treated here" is what bothers me. @Catija never treated that user harshly.
Well, FTW I don't think Maulik can handle a constructive discussion. Not today. I'm dropping it after one more comment.
In other news, TRomano has a new avatar!
At first glance, I thought it was a person, but it's not.
12:18
I'm surprised, @Dam except J.R.'s questionnaire answer all the other one's are at least downvoted once.
I think it's unfortunate that we are allowed to vote answers on that page.
Well Maulik's answer sounds more like a well-disguised rant aimed at ELU than someone who's hoping to become a mod in the future's response.
Negative campaigning, also known more colloquially as "mudslinging", is trying to win an advantage by referring to negative aspects of an opponent rather than emphasizing one's own positive attributes or preferred policies. Negative campaigning can be found in most marketplaces where ideas are contested. In U.S. politics, "mudslinging" has been called "as American as Mississippi mud". Some research suggests negative campaigning is the norm in all political venues, mitigated only by the dynamics of a particular contest. == Techniques == There are a number of techniques used in negative campaigning...
While the election is ongoing, I think I will reserve my opinions on other candidates.
12:26
I never expressed any opinions on any of the candidates.
Oh, it's not really a judgement on you or anyone else.
More of an acknowledgement that I have seen what you have said, and have thoughts on it, but that I won't say anything about it, for now.
@DamkerngT. Well, considering it's been viewed 177 times, I imagine it has some influence on the election, and the number of votes is a rather crude appraisal of the answers.
I think people are voting based on their vote for the candidate, but that's just my opinion.

@Araucaria Yes.
Voting appears to have slowed down.
I wonder if this is a better measure of the number of active users?
Actually, a mod would be able to check that.
@jimsug Nope. It isn't.
I and @Dam see users who've been active a year ago or so.
How many eligible users are there?
I take it that they silently visit our site and enjoy reading the questions and answers. :-)
12:37
Well, you'll get some people who are active elsewhere on the network getting drawn in.
Oh, that's a good explanation.
@Araucaria Lemme check.
@Araucaria There are 1367 users that can vote in the election.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Since the last time SEDE was updated, I suppose. So >1367, I would say.
I can't remember I voted to close that question.
I wonder if that's some crude attempt at imitation.
12:41
@DamkerngT. Too broad? GR is the correct reason.
Ahh... Member since today.
Can we please just flag as offensive? It doesn't seem like a genuine attempt to learn.
Questions that ask about taboo words aren't off-topic, but the way it is phrased does not appear to be an earnest attempt to learn.
ELL is flooded by trolls lately. :(
12:43
Was it the same during elections on other stacks?
And then that guy says "the way a new user is treated in ELL. (the Elvis case is a good example)" >:-\
@DamkerngT. Of course not.
Hmm. I can't say I've been active on other sites during elections.
I think it's just a coincidence, to be honest.
Actually, SF/SU/SO occasionally get trolls as mod candidates in their elections.
But not a flood of crappy troll-ish questions.
Hmm. This user seems to exhibit a similar pattern to the previous ones...

I can't remember I voted to close that question. <--- I have to say I was a bit surprised to see your name there. I thought the original question was good! I think it would be constructive to reopen it, roll it back to it's original state and give it a good answer ...
@Araucaria My only reason was that it was too broad. It would be better to split the question up.
@Arau not sure if the intention of the OP is good.
Lemme take a look at the original revision first.
Admittedly, I should've added a comment or something, but I hoped that the third or fourth vote would do that.
(And Nathan's was sufficient, IMHO.)
13:00
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I think it was originally. They took offense maybe at the closure, or possibly having the links they put in removed. But it was their frustration at not being able to close the question that got them to start being abusive. They seem to be trying to force us to delete the question. They prolly don't know they can do it themselves ...
nods -- I hadn't seen it until the genital vocabulary came up.
I would agree if you revert it to some early revision and maybe make it more focused and write an answer to it. @Araucaria
