@J.R. I understand why my comment was removed; I didn't enjoy writing it either. But you should put a stop to this insane close vote spree.
Please. Pretty please! puppy eyes
Ahh, guess "careful" would be a better word.

Q: Why is ELL so despot , totalitarian, anti-free speech, anti-democratic

Elvis Jagger Abdul-JabbarI asked a question on feelings and my question was blocked in a few minutes , because it was a bout feelings and they said you are not allowed to speak about feelings here! When I tried to express my opininons why this is wrong , they they said to me " I am so rude and defensive" and when I ...

Q: Why do moderator condone offensive words made by some people

Elvis Jagger Abdul-Jabbar 2I asked a question and my question was blocked and when I express my opinions why this is wrong , one of them said I was so defensive and rude! I was so offended! Furthermore the messages I sent were deleted by the moderator but this guy's offensive remarks kept its place. When I said the same...

@jimsug If we can get this to -4, the migration stub won't appear on the front page.
The user won't lose any reputation, either.
@jimsug Migrated!
@DamkerngT. Aaand now it's stuck on the front page at -1 :/
Anonymous
@jimsug So what would you do in this sort of situation if you were moderator?
The same thing. But as a user I can try to encourage three people to downvote it.
12:32
What can we do to move it out of the front page now?
Anonymous
Nothing. A moderator can delete the stub if they want.
Anonymous
But then the person who posted it might get confused and not be able to find the discussion.
Yeah, I forget that sometimes.
Anonymous
And then they might post another thread ;-)
If we edit the title of the migrated meta post, will the title on the front page change?
12:34
Interesting.
Anonymous
No, I don't believe so
Anonymous
They're separate posts in the system.
Anonymous
The stub will be automatically removed from the site before too long. It's okay.
Also, I'm now wondering if it's a duplicate... I mean, it relates to the same theme, and would have substantially the same answer.
Yeah.
Still, though.

@snailboat hi
how are you?
Hmm, although the Elvis is now suspended, I suspect we'll see more of him around. But, let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
13:02
@jimsug Do you mean the two Elvises are suspended?
(Because I think we have two of them.)
I think if they sit down and read the comments and answers calmly, they will understand.
I'm not sure what "(unregistered)" after the user name on a profile page means.
One is indeed suspended.
13:49
@DamkerngT. It means they don't have a Stack Exchange account; they've logged in with Google or what.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M BTW, I think you've just got a clone.
Wow, not much left to the election, and there's been some good amount of drama going on.
Best to ignore your clones, imho.
@DamkerngT. Huh?
He just posted a question on the main page.
13:51
Am I . . . really that famous?
How nice! The troll thought making an account with my name and posting a bad question will get me.
@Dam I'm going to comment and VTC that. I can't care less what the name of that user is.
I don't know if SE has any policy for the case when a user trying to imitate another user.
The question is okay, I think. If all the premises in the question are true.
Well the request for banning duplicate usernames has been hammered.
@DamkerngT. On second thought, it is; but I'm pretty sure they're not from Iran; since we don't have any "black people community" here.
That surprised me as well.
And since no one talks English, I don't think anyone refers to their friend as "chick".
I may need to clean up my browser and PC soon, so don't be surprised if I just disappear for a few hours. (in case it crashes)
13:58
Oh, well same goes here.
If Win8 crashes, I may not be able to chat.
14:10
@Dam I noticed they're exhibiting trollish behavior; I'm not engaging in that discussion anymore. And I think we both have hunches who they actually are.
I don't want to guess anything.
Well let's just end it . . . #electionhype
It's starting tomorrow, I think.
@Dam will there be races about who'll get the first "constituent" badge? We got a bit excited back in chem's election in the Table.
But I got to be the second voter. :\
And it doesn't matter how hastily you vote.
Because you can change your vote any time during the election.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Not sure. Probably. :-)
Will we see the results in real-time?
14:14
Nope.
The results would've been visible if we'd enter the primary phase.
A "vote section" would've been added to the nomination posts and we'd vote as if we're voting a question on ELL.
I still have no clear idea about the primary phase.
And then of course, the vote count would've been visible.
Did Chem.SE have one?
14:15
Nope.
@DamkerngT. It's a mini-election so that only the top 10 candidates remained.
I think you can find some interesting things to read at Meta Stack Exchange.

You mean I flag the post for . . . Oh I flagged it for J.R.'s attention because of rollback war he started.
Anonymous
Yeah, you'd have to flag their actions on the post
I did flag for the rollback war they started; but for the impostor thingy, nope.

14:25
It's okay, the moderators will probably notice on their own.
And FWIW I do sense they're making an attempt to belittle me and my country; and they're not even living in Iran.
Well, I shan't let thy trolls distracth me from thy election hype.
Anonymous
But yeah, for that sort of behavioral problem, flagging one of their posts with a custom message is the right thing to do, even if it's not associated with that particular post
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'm seeing double...
Judging from the comments, I think they're more interested in "chick" being used in Iran rather than elsewhere.
So maybe it's not about learning English.
14:30
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Personally, I think it's pretty offensive.
@Catija I'm seeing quadruple . . .
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Quadruple?
BTW @snail do you see that as a face or a tsu?
@Catija I have no idea what we're talking about.
Oh wait you mean my imposter?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That user with the "chick" question... there's two of you.
Nope. There's one of me, and one of a troll.
BTW @Dam "election begins in 5 hours" not tomorrow.
14:33
Ahh
Too bad I can't flag a post twice.
But, seriously... WTF is going on on ELL??? The Elvis thing and now this... The crazy Close votes... ugh.
BTW now that you're here @Dam, double-standards in closing happens in almost all of the SE sites.
@Catija Real skirmish.
Thought I suspect this Elvis thing and the troll are connected.
meh.
BTW @Snail @Dam @inazemar.a.m @Cat @Stoney have you decided who you're gonna vote for?
14:40
Yes, I have.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'll think about it.
I haven't yet fully decided.
@Dam your comment on my nomination post made me blush. :)
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M :D

Yes
Interesting.
That means I have to go and decide too.
Well I'm definitely voting for that guy.
That guy? I'm not sure.
That guy? Nope.
Anonymous
Japanese speakers are less likely to see ツ or シ as faces
14:43
Interesting. I always find that the questions do a lot to help me decide.
@snailboat Yes IIRC there was a question about it.
That guy? Maybe.
That guy? Maybe?
That guy? Prolly.
OK now I'm stuck with deciding between six people.
Dammit MA, this is really hard.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Well, at least we know they're all guys. ;)
Now I'm stuck with deciding who's my third preference.
@Catija Haha!
@Dam @Dam @DAM! The 9th candidate chipped in!
14:57
I wonder if we will have the 10th man.
15:17
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Because they seem to hold it against you, I think it's the best not to engage. Comments from others should make it clear enough where the community stands.
What? Chenmunka holds it against me?
Oh. You mean the meta comment thingy.
Well now they're ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)'ing with J.R.
16:13
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That was what I came here to discover.
Hullo @Tech!
Stupid autocorrect. I mean @Tch.
Hullo @Adam! Welcome to the chatroom!
Always disable autodefect.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M - I came by chat to ask about your troll - specifically, how is it that he/she is able to use your exact username?
(From the stupid "chick" thread)
Exact usernames are possible in SE.
But imposters are inappropriate.
@Adam Stack Overflow has a thousand users named Jim. :)
If two people have exact duplicates, and I use the @ inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M in chat, do both people get a notice?
(I had wondered how it was possible that no one else chose @Adam :-)
16:16
Search for "tom", "Jim", "will" anything you like. :)
All those other "Adam's...." who knew?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Duplicates are possible: Stackoverflow has 332 instances of "John Smith". These are unlikely to (all) be imposters, although they may not all be RealNames™.
31
Q: Why does Stack Overflow allow duplicate display names?

John MacIntyreWhat is the reasoning behind the design decision to allow users to create a display name which matches another existing users exactly? This is opposed to the common practice of enforcing unique user names, and I'd really like to learn something.

@tchrist This very user is a troll. He's just being my imposter and is trying to belittle Iran just because it's my country.
I am sorry to hear that.
Good luck with the troll....Is there a reporting mechanism for other people to report him?
16:19
At least they haven't succeeded in breaking my good mood.
@Adam Flag for moderator attention.
@Arau take a look at above discussion. :)
Post by post, not by profile
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M if we all flag it, it should get done pretty fast ... I don't think you should take the fact that duplicates are possible to be an obstruction to closing here.
Well, you asked why is such thing even possible; and I said it's possible, but is trolling in this case.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M There may be people with the same name, but backwardising it pretty much makes it a jab at you, imo
No probs. The only thing that matters is you guys understand.
16:22
Ok, so am going to flag it right now ...
It's not like anyone else is meeting chat.
It's been locked! Good ...
@Tch can mods see who flagged when processing the flag?
Well locked posts can still be flagged; but
Claps for @J.R.
Wow.
Chem's election was different.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yes ...
I love the community's attitude.
Everyone is telling another they'd make an awesome mod.
This is why I wanna see ELL's problems go.
And this is why I'm gonna continue to find the problems with ELL and deal with them.
ELL is a great community.
Still, my biggest remorse is @Stoney and @Dam and Colleen aren't nominating.
16:32
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I apparently have deleting privelees, but don't know how they work. Do you?
Yes, you're a trusted user.
But you can only immediately vote to delete if a question is -3 or lower.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yes, but @StoneyB loves writing, and the thing is that it takes time, patience distance and stuff to be a good mod
If it isn't; which it can't be since J.R. locked it, you have to wait.
IIRC it was two days before you can vote to delete.
Ah, yes, of course ...
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M And you wouldn't get to hang out with Dam ...
I'm not sure though if you can vote to delete a locked question.
16:34
Because he'd have to be impartial and passive (seemingly) ...
@Araucaria I'm pretty sure he'd've hanged out even if he became a mod.
Oh that's right.
He's mostly like that though.
You've got three hours to persuade him!
I'm the one that's usually the extremist guy in chat. :)
@Araucaria I don't think he's present. :\
3 hours ago, by Damkerng T.
I may need to clean up my browser and PC soon, so don't be surprised if I just disappear for a few hours. (in case it crashes)
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Well, he is. But he'd probably like to tell you that he thinks you're right or wrong about this or that issue here in chat ...
I haven't seen him do that in chat.
Actually, he has, a lot, about meta stuff.
Since I'm not as familiar with ELL's culture as he is.
16:37
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M He does that all th time! It's an ok thing to do - if you're not a mod!
(Every SE site has a culture of moderation)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Right. That's a good thing imo
:)
I dunno if it's good or bad. The thing that matters is that it's a thing.
For instance, chem mods have a tendency to mark your flag helpful if you flagged an obsolete comment.
Well, the reasons for different SEs existing are different ...
But J.R. seems to have marked them as declined a few times.
That too.
Or for example, I got a mod message from J.R. for posting welcome comments on ELL, while they're typical in chem.SE and people appreciate them.
16:41
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M He may just disagree about the obsoleteness of them, or about their contribution to the understnding of other comments, or the post or something
I've never flagged any comment as obsolete on ELL. Snail and Dam have. Or just Snail. So I dunno.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I've never understood that really, but I doubt it's J.R. personally. I think a large S.E.-wide debate is due over that. But doubt J.R. can really do anything about that phenomenon. I would suspect it's been prompted by something or other ...
Well J.R. is the only mod on ELL currently.
But yeah, he has to abide by some SE standards.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I suspect, there's stuff that you kinda have to do as a mod - whether you agree with it or not. And part of being a good mod is doing that stuff sometimes - when you have to - because we can't personalise the SE rules just cuz we're a mod ...
Anonymous
16:47
WendiKidd has been here again for a while, too
Anonymous
So there are two moderators
What I mean by "personalise" is change the rules according to what the mod wants ..
But I think that using discretion is a big part of being a good mod.
@Araucaria It shouldn't be what the mod wants. It should be what the mod wants and the community agrees with.
And I really think that most "mod" applicants imagine doing "loads" of stuff, and relish that idea. I think that would make a bad mod ...
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yes, exactly. But mods can't stand off on "cut the chat" comments - even if they or the community think they're helpful.
I don't think there's any discussion going on about chatty comments or taglines.
Comments aren't for discussion.
There are always chatrooms for that.
That's why there shouldn't be taglines in posts, and that's why comments are disposable and no-longer-important ones should be deleted.
SE wants to build something like an interactive library, not a discussion board.
16:54
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I got a mod message from J.R. for posting welcome comments on ELL <---- I was talking about that. EL&U got amost welcoming for new uses for a while whilst @medica was doing that but it got stamped on too ...
Oh.
Then you prolly should've replied to me. :)
2:37 left to election. #electionhype
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Well, I've only been talking to you really! but didn't want to ping you to oblivion ...
Replies and pings work the same way. But I like replies better, since they don't interfere with one boxing and markdown.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Indeed. Going to disappear for a bit. Good luck with the election (but you ain't got my vote in the bag yet ....) Ciao
Cya!
Actually, I don't have much hope for becoming a mod.
The only thing I hope is that whoever becomes a mod doesn't neglect chatrooms.
@Dam I have some devilish devilish thoughts in mind . . .
17:02
Yes?
Not really, I wanna clear up community consensus on some actions.
It's past midnight now! (my local time)
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That's a good idea.
But you don't sleep during the night.
Hmm, were you cleaning the computer?
I've shifted my sleeping cycle already; you may have noticed that.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Mostly, yes.
@DamkerngT. Oh? Clean life, no coffee, not much tea . . . stuff like that?
17:04
It's more like no coffee, more tea, perhaps. :D
@DamkerngT. First, I wanna make sure what will happen if I flag a comment as obsolete.
Then I'll have to know if we should flag a lot or we shouldn't flag a lot.
I think it will show up in a queue the mods can see.
Then, I'd ask if we should write a all-in-one new user FAQ. Something more personalized and better than the help center.
Anonymous
I almost always mark obsolete flags as helpful on Japanese.SE
@DamkerngT. No, I mean will the mods flag it as helpful or declined; will they delete the comment or not . . . I remember @snail saying her flags get declined.
17:07
nods -- It's one (maybe two) of the questions for the candidates too.
Oh crud! You reminded me that I have to write a response for them.
Anonymous
I'm not flagging anything on ELL at present
Me neither.
I'm pretty sure I had some other consensus-request questions in mind too, but I just forgot them.
They'll come to me eventually.
I think, no matter the election result, we should have meta posts to review our consensus on several issues. Dealing with comments is one of them.
Anyway, I believe that the mods will talk to one another to make sure that the moderation goes in the same direction.
Exactly. That's why I don't care if I become a mod or not.
One of the questions will be "how can we make chatrooms more effective".
@DamkerngT. There are special mod chatrooms mortals like us can't see.
17:13
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Makes sense.
@Snail can you, as a chat mod, see mod-only chatrooms for ELL?
Anonymous
I can't.
@DamkerngT. They use them as a private communication medium.
See?
Anonymous
ELL moderators can discuss things without my knowledge. And I assume they do.
The mod can give a normal user access to the room.
@snailboat I was curious to see if chat mods can see per-site mod-only rooms.
Anonymous
17:15
They can't.
Anonymous
There's one shared room where moderators from different sites can chat.
Hmm.
That must be how inexperienced mods gain experience without goofing stuff up.
I wonder if users will behave differently when we have three mods.
I don't think so.
I mean, I think many users try to help out so far because it's clear that J.R. mostly does the moderation alone.
17:20
I don't think the two are related much.
It's certain that it's not my reason.
Or yours.
BTW @Dam you didn't tell me, do you love or love love the data in my answer?
nods -- In my case, it's part of the reasons, actually.
Anonymous
The site has enough users that it can handle a lot of its own moderation through review queues and the like.
It's not a mod's job to help new users.
That.
A mod is just a guy/gal with a blue diamond next to their name and they can delete and clean and suspend and do other horrible things.
A mod's main job when they volunteer is to handle "exception".
Mods are so-called "human exception handlers".
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I don't have any real opinion, but I think your data agrees with mine. :D
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Exactly!
Then we agree that their job isn't to cuddle new users.
17:24
Hmm... I think it's a good thing to show that we care our users.
BTW @Dam the table's code is in chem's meta's sandbox.
@DamkerngT. It's a plus, not a must.
Right.

Hah! I think -9 is the new record for our meta posts!
17:31
I should congratulate them or something.
Oh, it's only at the 4th place.
We have one -12 and two -10 posts.
And I deleted one of them before.
I find the -12 one interesting. It was posted when the site was still very young.
@Dam are you going to sleep, or are you going to vote then sleep?
I'd rather not vote when I'm sleepy. :-)
17:39
You can always change your vote.
Always = till when the election is going on.
So the ballot is open now?
Nope.
You can always change your votes during the eight-day-long span of the election.
I mean, it's possible that I'd become the first preference. :P
But nobody knows anybody's votes before we count the ballots, right?
17:43
And they won't even know it after the election.
the only thing present will be the vote counts.
Ahh... true black box voting.
You can download a small piece of data and see the election result yourself with the OpenSTV app.
(After the election)
For instance, see chem's election page @Dam.
> 706 voters were eligible, 245 visited the site during the election, 126 visited the election page, and 61 voted
That's less than 10%!
Oh, a candidate did a SWOT analysis on themselves. :-)
Ah, it was actually more than one. I think three.
