Good Morning!
05:14
Morning!
little can be safely deduced from these figures will the 'little' become the subject in this sentence? what does this sentence actually means?
It means what it says. Let's try something simpler.
> Little was done.
It roughly means, what was done was (so) little.
ok. so if someone has done some small work and trying to explain it while exagerating it; can i jump out of my seat and say, "Well, little can be safely deduced with my explaination on this."
@JudeNiroshan It's an explanation given by someone else, isn't it?
You haven't explained anything, so saying anything about your explanation is very odd.
No, after that sentence i'm going to start the explanation. Is it good to start of with that sentence ?
*Well, little can be safely deduced with my explaination on this*
05:28
Still sounds a bit odd. A better way to phrase it is Well, little can be safely deduced from your explanation in my humble opinion.
Deduce usually goes with from. Saying deduce ... with may confuse your listener.
@DamkerngT. oh I see
deduced from your or deduced on your ?
from
We deduce something from some other things.

hi to all..
Hello, @SanthoshKumar! Welcome to the room!
Anonymous
Welcome to ELL chat!
thank you.
i am newbie to english. could you guide me to improve my english
Anonymous
Using the language a lot should help :-)
09:18
@SanthoshKumar welcome !
@JudeNiroshan thank you
Anonymous
@SanthoshKumar I don't really have very much specific guidance to give . . .
Anonymous
But if you need help with something specific, you can ask on ELL! And we can try to help here in chat, too.
I wish I could add something, but snailboat's said almost all there is to say. :-)
Anonymous
Do you have any specific goals? Like, are you trying to get better at English so you can use it at work to talk about programming?
09:24
understood
Anonymous
I see you have an account on Stack Overflow
@snailboat ya want to improve my english
Anonymous
Well, that's a very general goal. I'm sure you can do it, though! :-)
@snailboat yes i am programmer
Anonymous
Sometimes it helps to come up with some more specific goals. They can be big goals or little goals.
09:27
nods -- A journeyman can reach their destination easier when they have a specific destination in mind.
Anonymous
Sometimes if you start with a big goal, you can divide it up into smaller steps. Little goals that help you toward your big goal
@DamkerngT. Nice
@snailboat where you from?
Anonymous
If you're excited about programming, maybe you could read books about programming in English and talk about those topics in English :-)
Anonymous
I live in the United States. I'm in California.
oh great
Anonymous
09:29
Chatting is good, too. Every little bit of practice helps!
Anonymous
I'm a native speaker of English. I'm learning other languages though. I'm learning Japanese!
why do you learn japanese
are you going to settle in japan
Why do you learn English?
Anonymous
@SanthoshKumar I'm not sure. Right now I'm happy living in the US.
Anonymous
I love the language, though.
09:31
ha ha ha.. because English is everywhere
Anonymous
I don't really have any particular goals for Japanese anymore, though. I don't know why I'm learning it.
Anonymous
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M @DamkerngT. @JudeNiroshan Do you all have reasons for learning the languages you're learning?
English is special in several ways.
I don't. I mean do. I mean no. I mean yes.
09:34
@snailboat English is a one pole in the ladder of success; for me
difficult to answer
Anonymous
@JudeNiroshan Makes sense!
Anonymous
English is a global language these days.
But for some other languages I'm trying to learn, some are just for fun, some are because I have a specific purpose in mind, at least in the near future.
Anonymous
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You're funny. :-)
09:36
Language is the interpreter of your knowledge; though you have many qualifications, measurable one is linguistic skill.
Anonymous
I know some people are learning English who don't actually like English.
Anonymous
They learn English because they think they need to, not because they want to.
Anonymous
I like all languages :-)
@snailboat When we first set to goal need to , when you do it seriously, it will become want to
@snailboat That makes it easier to learn, eh? -- I wanna eh? for a while, BTW. :-)
Anonymous
09:38
@DamkerngT. That use of ", eh?" works!
@JudeNiroshan I think that's true for many of us.
@SanthoshKumar from the point you give a variable name; your english matters
Anonymous
I think that the trick to learning something is to make yourself interested in it. Very interested. So interested you want to find out everything you can! Interest helps you stay focused, motivates you and helps you keep working at learning.
@DamkerngT. I believe in it. I think i'm at the transformation period :D
@JudeNiroshan Nice! I'm sure you will improve a lot real soon.
09:43
@JudeNiroshan sorry i could not understood what you mean
@DamkerngT. your last post was very interesting; at some point it makes me pessimistic cos; most of the goals which i have; proven them as useless ones.
Anonymous
So to get better at English, you can pick something you like to motivate you:
・ I love action movies! I want to watch action movies in English and understand everything!
・ Programming fascinates me! I want to read about and discuss computer science as much as I can.
・ Chatting is fun. I want to chat with English speakers and practice so I can sound more natural!
I don't know what you like. These are just examples.
like having a good grade in degree
@JudeNiroshan There is more than just the goal, but to have a clear path, you need a clear goal anyway. Having a clear goal helps you see your progress clearly, see if it's realistic, if it needs to be readjusted, and so on.
@snailboat recently I listening English podcast. is it going to improve my english
09:47
@SanthoshKumar I think @JudeNiroshan meant good code needs good variable names.
@SanthoshKumar From my own experience, it will.
Anonymous
@SanthoshKumar Sure! Podcasts are great.
@DamkerngT. yes, understood
Anonymous
What podcasts do you listen to?
real life english
@snailboat esl podcast
Anonymous
Ahh
09:51
Probably here: reallifeglobal.com
@snailboat refer me any good podcast
Anonymous
I don't really know any ESL podcasts. You can practice listening with a podcast on any subject you're interested, though―they don't have to be ESL podcasts.
Anonymous
Stack Overflow has its very own podcasts, for example.
Anonymous
Does anyone else know some good podcasts?
I used to listen to NPR and BBC regularly.
Anonymous
09:54
I haven't listened to a lot of them myself, so I'm having trouble coming up with good recommendations.
(NPR is for American accents, BBC is for British accents)
BBC is so complicate to understand
I see. BBC has some children programs, too. I haven't tried it. But I also used to watch some Sesame Street episodes. :-)
@SanthoshKumar Wait, that reminds me of something...
Why do you think BBC is too complicated for you?
Is it because of the vocabulary? Or is it because of the accents?
Anonymous
There are also a lot of English audiobooks you can listen to.
@DamkerngT. both vocabulary and accents
@snailboat real life radio is good
09:59
@SanthoshKumar I see. I remember that I used to listen to slow songs before BBC and NPR. Slow songs helped ('cause they are slow!).
@SanthoshKumar Indeed. Actually, anything that you're interested in and not too difficult for you can help.

Today I learned a valuable lesson; I should not tell treat everyone around me as friends !
It's really hard to being with ordinary elderly people. Cos they things what we see, what we say; they used to look those as stupid and foolish things.
