I fixed up the capitalisation on that one... and yeah code adhesion... is it when a module affixes itself to another? :/

@jimsug applauds (for the edit)
@DamkerngT. It's one of the few things that bother me. I know that some people might do it, but it's one of the few objectively Not Right(TM) things.
@jimsug Agreed.

@Dam I just noticed we have a Reynolds Number in chem.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Cool!
@JimR your alienation has spread over chemistry.

Free vs Open : exact meaning
Further:
Freedom vs Openness
Should I ask these as question?
@Pandya I don't think such questions have a high chance of survival, as you can look up the exact meaning in a dictionary of your choice.
Additionally, the two words have so little in common, it is very random.
Like asking for the exact meaning of Mathematics vs Adenosinetriphosphate.
my speaking language isn't English so .......
So it's even easier, then.
Look up the translation of each word into your mother tongue.
For example, Wiktionary tells me that "free" in Hindi is मुक्त , while "open" is खुला.
13:48
They're different IMO.
Bah look who're here!
o/ @Matt @Reg!
How're you doin'?
I am not here. Lies.
Your owl is.
Who let the owls out?

Bah!
@Pan we'd also close them if you don't say you looked up in a dictionary.
Yeah. And just like that, the amount of discussion in this room has tripled.
We're typically inactive when @Dam's boiling water for his tea.
And we still have OVER 9000 messages left that we don't know what to do with. You wanna have them, name your price.

Anyone want to explain difference between Free Content and Open Content?
@Pandya The best thing to do is look it up. If you don't understand it, explain that you have looked it up and what is unclear.
@Pandya Code context: You can make use of free content freely. You can edit the code for open content.
I am just confused to choose between free and open where and when to use
For example, free games are free content, but open source stuff is open content.
13:57
Free content, libre content, or free information, is any kind of functional work, artwork, or other creative content that meets the definition of a free cultural work. A free cultural work is one which has no significant legal restriction on people's freedom: to use the content and benefit from using it, to study the content and apply what is learned, to make and distribute copies of the content, to change and improve the content and distribute these derivative works. Although there are a great many different definitions in regular everyday use, free content is legally very similar if not like...
Open content is a neologism coined by David Wiley in 1998 which describes a creative work that others can copy or modify. The term evokes open source software, which is a related concept in software. When the term OpenContent was first used by Wiley, it described works licensed under the Open Content License (a non-free share-alike license, see 'Free content' below) and perhaps other works licensed under similar terms. It has since come to describe a broader class of content without conventional copyright restrictions. The openness of content can be assessed under the '5Rs Framework' based on...
That's from your own links.
I think Wikipedia makes a very good job at explaining the difference. I am not quite sure how I am expected to compete with that.
@RegDwigнt Melodrama!
I think that is not your but my problem. let me read carefully...
Of course my own two cents are that the differences for all intents and purposes are negligible at best, and the latter term only exists because its author was not aware of the existence of the former.
Like with standards.
Or perhaps because he was.
Like with standards.
Anyhow. TL;DR: If you are not a lawyer, say whatever you want. And if you are a lawyer, you should be the one explaining the difference to me.
we should create a meta standards body to look after all the competing standards bodies
Bah, there are a lot of lawyers here.
14:02
I think we'll first need a meta standards foot.
And then another one.
put your best foot forward
33cm and 32.9cm, respectively, appear to be good choices.
With these meta standards feet firmly on the ground, we can build any shit we like.
I'm scared of meta.
I'm scarred by meta.
meta doesn't kill people
14:05
word "freedom" comes from word "free" right?
> Old English freodom "power of self-determination, state of free will; emancipation from slavery, deliverance;" see free (adj.) + -dom. Meaning "exemption from arbitrary or despotic control, civil liberty" is from late 14c. Meaning "possession of particular privileges" is from 1570s. Similar formation in Old Frisian fridom, Dutch vrijdom, Middle Low German vridom. Freedom-rider recorded 1961 in reference to civil rights activists in U.S. trying to integrate bus lines.
@Pandya If you wanna compare the usages, don't do word combinations play.
You'd just end up confusing yourself.
So anyway. Just how long will it be taking @Dam to boil his water, and what conclusions can we draw from that number about his elevation above sea level?
14:08
A long time, sometimes.
@RegDwigнt 7 or 8, respectively
These are my favorite conclusions. I draw them a lot.
Like here.
Another good one.
That's @JimR's hand.
With all the conclusions drawn, I conclude and withdraw.

Q: Can we please stop closing non-basic questions on spelling, meaning, or pronunciation?

DCShannonI think we have a knee-jerk reaction to close questions that look like they're about a word's definition. Anytime I see such a question, I attempt to look up the word in dictionaries myself. If I can find one quickly, then I post a link to the definition in a comment and vote to close. If I, as ...

@RegDwigнt This image terrifies me.

@StackExchange To be honest, the user that posted the question should be banned and their questions fitting this pattern should be closed.
Anonymous
It's been explained to me meatie far too many times by too many users that this is simply not how dictionaries work.
Anonymous
The close reason that was selected is the best fit for getting rid of these questions.
Anonymous
Perhaps to a user who isn't familiar with meatie's questions, this pattern might not be apparent.
Anonymous
The question doesn't ask "I don't understand this use of see and I can't figure it out after checking a dictionary. What does it mean in this context?". It asks "Is it wrong because it's not in a dictionary?"
Anonymous

This question has been asked many, many times, and it's never been useful.
Anonymous
It just wastes time and harms the site.

I looked briefly for the last time this was discussed on meta, but I couldn't find it.

@snailboat Have the ELL mods tried to contact this user before?
Anonymous
23:44
@jimsug I believe so.
Anonymous
There was a meta discussion where J.R. talked about why they chose to let meatie stay, I think.
Anonymous
I tried to find it earlier, but I gave up after a minute or two
@snailboat I can't remember the meta, but I think I've seen a comment by J.R.
Hrrrmm.
It sounded like J.R. had known this user years before.

Well, I know J.R. has commented a number of times.

A: Is it okay for users to delete questions and re-ask them verbatim?

J.R.This particular O.P. has a pattern that goes roughly as follows: ask a question – often about a preposition or a phrase containing a word with multiple meanings, and feigning a little confusion because a usage doesn't map to a dictionary with 100% precision reply to answers with follow-on quest...

Was it that one you were thinking of, @snailboat?
Anonymous
Yes! It doesn't fit my memory exactly, but that is definitely the one I was thinking of.

That's why I like to find these things―I know my memory isn't quite perfect ;-)
My search-fu is strong :P

@Esoteric - This particular user in a known SE troll who has played the same game for years, under different monikers and sock puppets. I was trying to dance around that backstory while informing the community about who they are "helping" with their time and efforts. I don't so much mind the questions – some of them are a bit clever and may be helpful for the learner – but I'm not quite so fond of the ensuing discussions. — J.R. ♦ Sep 15 '14 at 9:20
Ah, that's the comment I had in mind!
