Lucian SavaIn English knowledge is a mass noun. For this reason it cannot combine with an indefinite article.

I browsed through other mentioned ELU questions; compared to LePressentiment's now-deleted one, I think it's about less is more. Other questions are shorter, ask about usage that may exist in the entire history of English, but not about how senses of a word were developed or evolved.
