Hola
Hello!
Good (morning, afternoon, evening)
:D
@snailboat It's from Zombieland's script:
> No sooner does Flagstaff say this than the woman pulls in front of an oncoming TRUCK. Her car is SMACKED in the side.
The woman is THROWN through the side window of her car, and lands on the asphalt, deader than dead.
(As the result of not going by Flagstaff's rule #4 Seatbelts)

Hello, earthling!
(or chemling)
> Pretty fly for a white guy.
Hmm, does fly mean spry?
Context?
Well, there's no context...I wanna help Google translate.
Hehe... flying (adj) : Worthless.
Oh, it's a song name.
09:26
> And all the girlies say I'm pretty fly for a white guy.
@Dam BTW, shouldn't they be puzzles of the week rather than day?
@M.A.Ramezani My plan was to have a few puzzles a week. :P
Due to my circumstance at the moment, it turned out that we have really close to one puzzle a week.
(BTW, read "a few" as "a couple")
What's your circumstance at the moment? Sitting on the sofa?
Hmm... (looking at what he is sitting in...) I think it's a chair.
Trying to relate @Dam's current circumstance to the lower frequency of puzzles
09:31
@M.A.Ramezani Two letters: BZ
:D
Nice! My old answer on ELU got another upvote!
Yay!
My old answer on meta.SE got an upvote & and an accept.
What the?!
What the heck?
09:40
?
Google Translate asks me to translate this into Persian:
> Lest's go.
What should I do now?
There's no skip button or what.
How do you help Google Translate? Is there a page for giving such help?
(I thought Google Translate asks us on the case by case basis.)
I think you should go to Translate.google and then see something below the translation boxes (help Google translate) or something like that.
09:47
Yes, but isn't that only for our own translated text?
Huh?
What do you mean?
In the translated textbox, there is a button "Wrong?", right? Is this the button we click to help Google with translation?
Nah not there.
Take a look at under the not translated box.
It says
> Help improve Google translate.
And they've really worked on the design. I enjoy it.
09:52
Hmm... weird, I can't see that (Help improve Google translate) now.
Maybe because I haven't signed in.
O.O
@DamkerngT. Yeah that could be the reason.
Down the hatch?
That's a cool expression!

Q: Answers and comments that tell the asker to accept the answer you've given

ColleenVSome users trying to build up their reputation answer a question and then add instructions to new users on how to accept their answer, either in the answer itself or in a comment. While I don't think this is malicious in any way, I do think it sends the wrong message to new users and pressures th...

A: Have you ever been to London? Have you ever gone to London?

GurpreetI think you want to know the difference between "go to some place" and "have been to some place". The difference is that when you use "go to," you are talking about the action of just going to that place. Whereas, when you use "have been to," you're talking about the action of going and coming b...

This answer (which is mentioned in the meta post above) makes me think of something funny.
I wanna say wut?
Wut to the answer or to my comment?
None. Your chat message above.
Mate1 meets Mate2 somewhere around the web, probably in a chat roulette...
M1: "Hello, mate! Have you ever been to Paris?"
M2 (has been in Paris for a couple of weeks): "Sorry, no. I've never been to Paris. I'm in Paris."
Hehe!
That must have been our English teacher.
14:37
Hee
@Dam did you ever grow interest in chem?
Yes. Mostly because of the colors in test tubes. :D
What about the theory?
Not really.
For example I wanted to see if you're interested in some more "every-day" questions like this:
14:41
I think I like things that I can touch or interact with better.

Q: Vinegar CH2O ? COH2

Lee Xinwe must write empirical formula of $\ce{CH3COOH}$ as $\ce{CH2O}$ or $\ce{COH2}$ ? Alike ? Any nomenclature? Somebody told me it was because of bonding, different way of writing the chemical formula mean different way or bonding, but I'm not sure if it is correct or not,

Hehe!
Ahh
@Dam I'm feeling like we close more than we should recently on ELL.
Oh what?!
Really? I think we didn't close as often as we should.
I mean, most questions are some kinds of duplicates.
@DamkerngT. Recently.
14:50
How recent is recently?
Not dupes, (dups) but more legit questions are being closed as lacking research etc.
@DamkerngT. Last week till today.
Oh, I see.
I think I didn't close most (maybe any) of them.
Every time I press review, I see like 4 -6 close votes pending review.
That could mean that either our close voters aren't enough or we're closing more recently.
Oh hullo @snailboat!
Anonymous
I wonder how many people on SE spell it dupes and how many spell it dups. I prefer the former myself
Anonymous
Good morning!
14:53
From now on, since I'm usually moderate about politics, I'll use dup(e).
:D
Morning @snailboat!
Anonymous
Yes! If you can't make everyone happy, make everyone unhappy! ;-)
Anonymous
My guess is most people use the 'e', but it'd be interesting to grab the data dump and see whether that's actually true
Where's that ngram? Oh, maybe ngrams won't work this time.
Anonymous
Google Books Ngram Viewer doesn't have a Stack Exchange corpus
15:25
Do you think this is right? And do they have same meaning?
> Look at him dance.
Wut?
Hmm...
@Man_From_India That's pretty much the same think PEU says.
I wonder if who copies who.
I thought look at him dance => look at him (who) dance
@DamkerngT. You figured it out! Who copies who.
The screenshot is from this link
15:27
@Man_From_India I don't think this holds.
When a .org site elaborates something like that, it usually makes me skeptical (about not mentioning their sources).
Let's get 'em!
Reloads shot gun
Violence is the only way!
Wait! Why the gun?
To start a fight between PEU and that .org.
15:32
I was playing FIFA 2008...old game :-)
An antique!
I've never played that!
I was in college then when this game was launched, and we used to play a lot in multiplayer :-) now I found this game's DVD :-) so installed it again :-)
MFI's being in college was the exact reason he played it a lot.
Helps in studies ya know.
15:36
There is another reason actually...nostalgia :D
And after college didn't really get much time to collect games, and play them at all :-(
If I go to buy any DVD it must be some music DVD
Speaking of music, I'm not enchanted by TF2's soundtrack.
i.e. Transformers 2: Revenge of fallen.
The film wasn't that cool. I love TF3 better.
Transformer :D it's Dam's department :) lol
But when the music composer is Steve Jablonsky, then you can't ignore the music.
@Man_From_India :-)
I can't recall movie soundtracks that I really like.
I bet you like the soundtrack of Gravity.
15:42
Finding...
Talking about music, I still have that guitar which I bought during my college days. I don't know how to play a guitar, but my hostel roommate at that time tought me few lessons, and I used to strum...now I know that produces mostly noises, rather than a music :P so after college the guitar is permanently hanged to the wall the way "sikaris" (hunters) hang their prey's skull or something at the wall for people to see :-)
:-)
Like a trophy or something.
That is a trophy.
A sign that MFI could get free classes.
BTW, I just recalled that I really like soundtracks of Cloud Atlas.
God knows :-) I still have some weird stuffs as a reminder of days gone :-) So silly they are to speak of, but when I am alone with them, it does make sense :-)
15:46
Eyes open wide What do you do to them when you're alone?
Not always I bring them out :-) last time I was cleaning my drawer, and I found a old dairy :-) so much thing written :-)
...about a girl?
so silly it would sound, but they bring back memories
not always a girl...a lot of thing...
A lot of girls.
:O
this is ur department :-) my college days are gone, so gone are the days of being with a lot of girls :D
15:49
Meh.

> Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.
(George Orwell, 1984)
Did he intentionally use make, knowing that people would expect makes there?
Logical conclusion: Orwell's weird.
Hello all. Hope everyone is having a lovely Monday.
Hullo @Catija!
I just messed up Persian grammar exam. What a LOVELY Monday.
You're learning Persian and English? The US is such a failure at teaching "foreign" languages.
Well I'm me...I also learn Arabic.
16:23
What's your "native" language, anyway?
A weird and cool dialect of Turkish.
But it's in danger of extinction. :(
Interesting. Is it not widely used, then?
What language is replacing it?
It's used only in the northern part of Iran, primarily in the province of East Azerbaijan.
@Catija The problem is that there are no experts to keep the language alive and flourishing.
We keep borrowing an awful lot of words from Persian and Arabic.
You should become an expert then, particularly if you enjoy your language so much. :)
Too much work. There's a big lack of historical evidence for research.
Persians want to keep the official language of the country like that...They also end up screwing ours.

@Man_From_India Aww, poor guitar!
@snailboat I have an odd question I was thinking of asking somewhere but wasn't sure where it would be appropriate. I'm making a little amigurumi octopus but right now it's only got five legs. I was talking with my husband about what to call it and he said "pentapus" and I thought "quintopus"... the wikipedia article says that it's from the Greek, which would make "penta-" "correct" (if you will) but the Latin for 8 is octo-... so it seems that either could be right.
Anyway, I don't know how picky ELU is about words actually being "English"... but I didn't think it was necessarily appropriate to ask the Linguists.
