@Freddy Hello!

Q: Use of the word 'revile'

DougI am writing a story, in which a character thinks something which in retrospect he finds absurd and paranoid, and is frustrated for having thought it in the first place. To reflect his attitude, I want to write (in the first person): ' "Paranoid moron!" I revile. ' Is this a correct usage of t...

An interesting question.
good(morning, afternoon, evening)
I think it's possible, though I wouldn't recommend using it, and I think it's likely that the OP was thinking of it as I revile, "Paranoid moron!"--a single sentence, but their example is actually two.
@Freddy It's afternoon over here. :-)
I wonder if people still really use revile intransitively.
> When he was reviled, he reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not.
@DamkerngT. Not that I know of. You have to revile something... as I've just posted.
> And thus said Shimei when he reviled, Get off, get off, thou man of blood, thou worthless man.
@Catija nods -- Oh, I didn't see your post!
@DamkerngT. yeah, it was new. It's interesting how you've found older uses of it being intransitive though?
merriam-webster.com/dictionary/revile Here it seems to be either.
07:43
@Catija I tried to search for "he reviled" in books, hoping that I might find it used the way the OP tried to use.
Then it became clear to me that we normally revile someone or something, not our revilement.
I get what he's trying to do, though... he's trying to use it as a more descriptive way of saying "I said".
... which seems like it should be OK but I don't have any familiarity with it.
Yes, it seemed so to me, too, which I think is incorrect.
The only possible way to think of it as correct for me is to think of it as two sentences, and revile was used intransitively, which is very uncommon.
(I also tried looking for "he said, reviling" but to no avail. :-)
I think this may actually be a good one for ELU.
08:04
Hullo!
Hello!
Hmm...I can't really talk about an intransitive revile.
Haven't seen it anywhere.
Was it common in archaic English?
I guess that it's more common in old English, yes.
I'm sorry, but this isn't what we do here. We answer specific questions about English and questions should be researched and show that you've gone to some effort to figure out the answer yourself. We specifically do not proof read. — Catija 17 mins ago
Though I wonder if it was common at all.
08:11
Or rather, proofspeak!
I'm now taking a look at the most downvoted Qs on ELU.
Haha! Classic:

Q: 'installed' or 'isntalled'?

user69378I've seen in an online shop the following sentence "Windows is isntalled by default.". I'm not a native speaker and was wondering, is "isntalled" correct or it's a mistake and they wanted to say 'installed'? Thanks!

Oh, no!
Someone who was able to write that question by themselves shouldn't have that kind of problem!
I think they weren't familiar with a phenomenon named auto-correct.
Sorry I mean typo. :}
I thought you meant autoincorrect. :P

Q: What is the difference between 'dictionary' and 'thesaurus'?

bookseeDo 'dictionary' and 'thesaurus' exactly have the same meaning or is there some difference between them ?

@DamkerngT. All of them are the same!
This one is actually a little more interesting.

Q: So which "wich'" is it?

NoahIt's generally not confusing to most the obvious differences between a sandwich, a witch and the word "which", but are they related in any way? While a sandwich can be defined jokingly as,"in my mouth; piece of food that doesn't exist anymore" etc. most of everyone knows that a sandwich is basica...

Thesaurus is somewhat clearer. Dictionary is a bit more vague. We even have "dictionary of grammar".
This one's... Not a question!
FWIW, sandwich is one of the words I often misspell.
Kay let me... the fourth ice cream...
I'm wondering if I misspell it now.

Q: Why is the establishment allowed to stifle my ability to campaign?

Evan CarrollIn this question, the following verbiage was repeatedly removed -- this inhibited my ability to answer the question. Fumble bit the tongue outta Evan Caroll's mouth. Look at his comment @Dam!
@M.A.Ramezani I read the first revision of the mentioned answer, and I agree that it should be edited out.
It's similar to a recent ELL answer that was telling the OP to accept the answer.
08:29
I don't have problem with that kinda content, as long as it's not linkified:
1. Where I come from, mod candidates are so much cool chemists, that whatever they write is acceptable.
2. If it's not linkified, it might sound more like a, joke, to me rather than an advertisement.
On the other hand, I think we have a more serious problem about voting (questions and answers) on ELL.
@M.A.Ramezani Hah!
Judging from the voting trend, I think most users only vote stuff they think "interesting".
If ELL graduates, I think mod elections are gonna be some screwed events.
However!
08:32
@DamkerngT. Even if the Q/A they vote is wrong.
These "interesting" posts might not be very useful for our target audiences.
@DamkerngT. HOWEVER!

Q: Start a sentence with verb

KamI don't know is it okay to start a sentence like these. Observed the experiments, I learned that "Failure is a mother of Success". Run to me, I get you to some place to hide. I know that we can start the sentence with To-verb and verb+ ing. But I am not sure about can we start a sentence like...

> Run to me, I get you to some place to hide.
08:40
Wut?
Hmm... should I run to them?
They don't even know where they're going to hide me in.
Am hiding now. You can't see me.
> Observed the experiments, I learned that "Failure is a mother of Success".
I think someone should point to them to use the gerund form.
Yes. But the semantic of the sentence is problematic too.
08:43
Yes.
It should be
> Observing the experiments fail,...
Or
> Observing the experiments' failure...
Or
> Observing the failure of the experiments...
Or
> OK that's enough substitutions.
I mean, I don't know what specific experiments they have in mind. Can some specific experiments bring such enlightenment?
Also, the idiom is "failure is the mother of success".
So, basically, if I want to writer an answer, there will be too many points to address for me.
And it will sound like a proofreading.
@DamkerngT. Oh, the idiom? Yeah...
@DamkerngT. OK OK!
As for the construction itself -- [clause, clause], one can claim parataxis or asyndeton and simply use commas instead of periods, but that's probably a bit too much for the OP.
So, I don't know how to answer the OP's question properly! :(
All in all, I think it's always better if our users use only real sentences they found (not made-up ones) as their examples.
On top of all of that, I think the OP doesn't have any clear ideas about their sentences.
08:51
The second one is an imperative sentence, though the first one has a very different construction.
OK gotta go...Go on and burn that question for me would you?
What question?
"Run to me"?
I think I'll leave it for others.
I don't want to ruin the question.
Someone could take it into the right direction.
OK seriously, my mom's yelling at me... I gotta go. See you euphemistically!
See you!

hi Dam...holiday, right?
@Man_From_India Hi @Man_From_India! It's Saturday!
No holiday there? I thought u r in IT and here it's official holiday :-)
Oh, what's the holiday's name?
o sorry no name...it's weekend :)
09:12
so there in ur place Saturday is working day? officially?
Hmm... Normally, holiday would mean a public holiday, usually announced at the beginning of the year (or late previous year).
Oh, Saturday is not a working day for most people.
However, living in my own (home-)office, I'm not sure if I really have a non-working day. :P
But I usually take things very casually on Sundays.
^now I wonder which of 'on Sunday' and 'on Sundays' is better...
Sorry for my bad use of words :D I myself was looking for what to call it :-) anyway that happens. I was tired and left IT last year...now enjoying simple life :-)

It's interesting that both answers insist that we should use I will (or I'll) get you to ...
@Man_From_India Simple life is good. :-)

yes I developed a lot of health issue. So left...another reason was I am able to join my parents here :)

Was it about the air quality?
Some people move out of Bangkok to other city because of the air.
I moved away from the center of the city myself, too.

no..but due to life style..junk foods...sleep time change...depression and all...recently I suspect I might have auto immune disease...i have developed iritis :-( planning to visit a good rheumatologist...
Oh!
I hope you'll get better soon!
in india the problem is the IT companies thrived in a few cities.mostly in Bangalore :-)

there is no escaping :( no getting better...ur own immune system is ur enemy :'( anyway I should not think of all these things...it is being suspended, rheumatoid factor is normal...so a bit relief...need to do some more tests...hopefully everything will be fine :-)

Oh did I mention that the heat wave here is let up a bit? Day before yesterday in the evening it rained here in torrent with heavy thunderstorm. That was the first rain this season to everyone's comfort. Yesterday temperature was pleasant, though not very low if seen in actual number, but it was good compared to that of other days before rain. Today also it rained all day long, barring sometime during mid-day :D
12:42
I'm not a rain person, personally, but I'm happy that you enjoy the rain. :-)
If you were here during the heat wave and the days when the sun was at its fiercest, you could not help loving rain, more than anything else :P
I guess it's true!

Q: When would you say "I felt violated"?

ChristianWhen a space is violated, it is intruded upon. When a law is violated, someone is breaking it. You can violate a religious place by desecrating it. Violating a person is synonymous with raping that person. But what do people mean when they say "I felt violated (by)" or "I feel violated"? To me, ...

My unposted answer: When you were given a bath by a couple not-so-young Japanese ladies like Wolverine got in The Wolverine. :-)
I am coming back after some time, going to eat something :-)
Enjoy your meal!
Hello @JuliaSuvorova! Welcome to the room!
Ah, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is coming up! Off to watch the movie!
13:06
I--very honestly--felt violated when I saw that movie, as it was my first, and I hope my last, experience in a "4D" theater, getting rattled about in my seat traumatically, sprayed with steam, etc. I HATE YOU, IMAX!!!

2 hours later…
15:03
@JimReynolds Oh, was it the Apes or the Wolverine one? :-)
Ah, just see the starred messages.
For those who starred Arrowfar messages, I wish you could unstar them. I'm quite certain that you don't know what had happened.
For those who welcome Arrowfar, I won't object to your welcoming him or chatting with him, though I think it's the best for everyone if Arrowfar will stay in other rooms.
For those who still talk with Arrowfar, please tell him that I forgive him, I really do, but I don't forget.
What happened again just a couple of days ago proves that I was right that I decided to ignore him in all chat rooms.
So it's the best that Arrowfar and I forgive each other and part our ways.

Q: The usage of the word straddle

MrtCan you explain what the word straddle means in the following context please? Does it mean " pouring mulch/compost in a organized way in long rows like a bale " Compost windrow turners were developed to produce compost on a large scale. They are traditionally a large machine that straddles...

An interesting machine!
@DamkerngT. Please don't do this. I don't know and do not care about the details but there's no reason to bring your private vendetta to the rest of the chatroom. If you've chosen to ignore another user, that's fine (and is the best way to deal with this sort of situation) but don't try to impose your opinion of somebody on the rest of the chat users.
@terdon I didn't hold the grudge. I emphasized that I've forgiven him. I just don't forget what happened. (Because I know it will happen again, like a couple of days ago.) That's all.
user116848
@terdon Thanks terdon. Much appreciated man.
For one thing, imho, just one starred messages should be enough.
@DamkerngT. Yeah, but that's up to the individual users to decide.
17:15
Wut?
What happened here?
Hullo @Terdon!
user116848
Hello @M.A.Ramezani!
And I'm not saying you did anything really wrong. Just that it's not constructive to tell people not to star because you dislike someone.
Hi @M.A.Ramezani!
If I'm not mistaken, it all started when I did my duty as one of the owners of another room to cleanup starred messages of a similar kind, which imo, carried ill-intention.
What's going on?
Choosing to ignore is absolutely the right thing to do. And I know it can be very hard when there's bad blood between you.
17:16
@terdon Of course! Which is why I said I won't object to anyone chatting with him.
@DamkerngT. Yes, and most of what you posted above was clearly polite and decent. People have a right not to like each other, after all.
I won't even object to him being here, even though I sincerely think it's the best he's not here.
user116848
@DamkerngT. You are clearly insulting me. Why?
@DamkerngT. I'm sure he feels the same way about you.
@DamkerngT. Although I don't know what happened, Arrowfar is as free to come to this room as you are. You're free to ignore anyone, but this is not your chat room.
17:17
@Arrowfar No he's not.
Breathe in... Breathe out... Breathe in... Breathe out
@terdon I don't know why he had to follow me to this room.
Maybe he wanted to chat with snailboat and other native speakers, but I'm sure he can get that in any other room.
He has a right to dislike you. I'm sure you don't like him too much either. This is a normal part of human interaction, we can't like everybody.
@DamkerngT. Nobody's following anybody. You're both interested in learning English so you both gravitated to this room.
@terdon There are two room for learning English.
17:19
I have actually read through a few of your previous arguments and I remain convinced this is all a misunderstanding. Largely caused by missed subtlety due to the language barrier.
Exactly.
About learning English, I haven't seen him posting anything really related to learning English either.
I have had very civil interactions with both @DamkerngT. and @Arrowfar and am perfectly fond of both of you. That doesn't mean that everyone else should feel the same way.
@terdon It started out as a misunderstanding. I tried my best to tell him so, but to no avail.
user116848
@terdon Thanks terdon. I like you too!
17:20
@DamkerngT. Talking/chatting is one of the main ways one can learn a language.
@Arrowfar :)
@terdon Which I'm sure he has so many rooms to choose from. :-)
@DamkerngT. I know. And I know you did, I've read the posts. As I said, I don't really think either one of you has done anything wrong.
Boy, I'm feeling bad again. Comin' here after all of the studies and stuff to chat and relax my mind. Sigh
That's neither here nor there, though. The point is that right now, you're both fed up with each other. You should both ignore each other (as you have very correctly done already).
@M.A.Ramezani I'm so sorry that it happened again. I didn't know why it had to happen again.
17:21
I'm just requesting that you take it one step further and don't try to color other people's opinions of another user. Let them make up their own minds.
I wanted to post that to reply to those messages on the wall.
@terdon ?
Who did what?
I thought it was the only chance for me to reply. I thought others wanted me (and perhaps snailboat too) to see those messages.
2 hours ago, by Damkerng T.
For those who starred Arrowfar messages, I wish you could unstar them. I'm quite certain that you don't know what had happened.
@terdon Yes. True. I still feel the same.
17:23
I starred two of @Arrow's messages.
In other cases, it'd be the best to forgive and get back to normal.
user116848
@M.A.Ramezani Thanks MA!
However, this case is special.
Having four of them there where he was just apologizing is a bit annoying.
@DamkerngT. And I understand you, really. It's easy for me to get on my high moral horse since I don't have any emotional involvement here. From the cool heights of my impartial indifference, I can see that such comments are not constructive :)
17:23
But I'll pass.
So, I forgave and want to forget about it.
@DamkerngT. Yes, the rest of what you posted was very gracious.
Part of the reason why I'm pretty sure you're a decent guy/gal.
@terdon Both @Dam and @Arrow are cool people.
Thanks. I'm a guy, by the way. :-)
17:24
I know. Which is why it's sad that they've talked themselves into a corner like this.
@DamkerngT. Can't tell with the faceplate down :)
Having them feeling like the other one's attacking is bad.
Yes
@terdon True!
:D
That's what I'm trying to avoid. I think the best thing is for both to put the other on ignore and just avoid mentioning each other.
And it was me, sitting on the sofa, seeing what a little misunderstanding led to.
17:26
Yes.
When two people are angry at each other (for whatever reason) even the most innocuous things can be annoying. There are people in the world who could anger me just by saying "hello".
But misunderstanding was only part of the problem.
@terdon That's good enough.
@M.A.Ramezani Hope you had popcorn :)
I didn't.
17:26
Damn.
That was the most excruciating part of it.
I'm not really angry. I just don't want to be too careful to say anything here, worrying that someone will read my message the wrong way.
makes popcorn for everyone!
You know. It's kind of exhausting.
@DamkerngT. Understood. I read you as more exasperated than angry.
17:27
Pop
Ah my mind!
However, we've clearly established that for whatever reason, you and Arrow don't manage to communicate well. Could be because of language, or cultural differences or just incompatible characters. Whatever.
If we could just make it so that you don't see arrow's posts and arrow doesn't see yours, the problem goes away.
That's what ignore is for!
(and then you see starred messages and it brings it all back again, no system is perfect)
The problem still happened again even with me ignoring him.
And I haven't seen snailboat here after that.
sigh
Yeah, this is not a nice situation. It's where you're at though. :(
17:30
(
Both of you want to enjoy this room and you both have every right to do so, so ignoring each other is the only solution I see.
My eyes popped out alright.
@M.A.Ramezani That's bad for your sight.
@M.A.Ramezani You're supposed to be popping the corn, silly.
Don't forget that ELL has two rooms, though.
17:31
@Alenanno Oh, hullo!
Looks for his eyes
Puts them back on
@M.A.Ramezani Was it painful?
It still is. Sigh
I'm considering leaving the room. :(
@M.A.Ramezani I'd feel sad.
@M.A.Ramezani Naaaaah. If you do, you'll have to pay $ 500,000 to each moderator that is in the room at the moment of your leaving. New ruling from SE, trust me.
@M.A.Ramezani Actually, when I wrote this, I thought of you:
2 hours ago, by Damkerng T.
For those who still talk with Arrowfar, please tell him that I forgive him, I really do, but I don't forget.
17:35
OK, I'm trying to gather the pieces of my splashed mind from the ground.
@Alenanno Paypal?
There is no grudge from my side...
@M.A.Ramezani Sure.
There's no Paypal in Iran!
@Alenanno Yay!
@terdon :D
17:35
but it's like, umm, what?... a broken glass, perhaps.
@M.A.Ramezani Aww. Send the money in a package then!
@Alenanno Where do you live?
@terdon When no-one ever reached. (I'm a hermit.)
@Alenanno Yeah, that surely will happen. Trust me. M.A.R style promise.
SURELY.
@terdon You know, like Pai Mei.
@M.A.Ramezani lol
17:37
By the way, @M.A.Ramezani Though I think SE has no rules against this, I think it'd be better to cut down talking about politics.
@terdon Psst. Italy.
Yeah, I myself despise that @Dam.
I see.
@DamkerngT. Exchange emails/skype and then talk about it there?
@Alenanno Yes, that's what I thought. So, between the Iranian and Italian postal services, what do you think are the chances that money will ever reach you? :P
17:38
Sure. Why not! :-)
It's not like one'll make world a happier place with chatting political stuff in a SE chatroom. Who am I? Nelson Mandela?
@terdon Uhm, well, we'll need to devise a proper strategy.
@M.A.Ramezani Are you? ARE YOU?
Yeah sure.
@Alenanno Send it to Switzerland and ask a friend from Como to drive it down to you perhaps :)
17:39
@Alenanno Cuz I TOTALLY have that much money.
@M.A.Ramezani I wonder what topic we'll discuss in a politics chat room, if there is one.
Could be a scary place. :D
Yeah yeah...
@M.A.Ramezani lol
@terdon Ah, does it have a chat room?
17:40
Probably, I've never checked.
I don't think politics is something you safely can talk about in multinational sites.
@DamkerngT. :O How could it not?
Totally agreed.
And both religion and politics are often discussed here. We just need to keep things civil, is all. For example, we have Christianity,Islam,Mi Yodeya and Hinduism
17:41
@M.A.Ramezani Don't know. But I remember that someone has to create one.
(for each stack, I mean)
Or something.
Like I dunno, SE's bot?
Could be. Dunno.
The main chat is there by default, I think. Then you can create new ones.
Yes, I think all sites have at least one associated chat room by definition.
Hey, @Alenanno, since you're here, would cross-language etymology questions be on topic on Linguistics? For example, tracing the etymology of a word from Greek through Latin and into English?
Somehow, suddenly thinking of 'colonel'...
17:46
@terdon Sure! Etymology goes across languages I'd say in 99,999999999999% of cases. No, 100%.
Why is it pronounced "kernel", with the /r/? Must be because of French.
No. 105%.
@Alenanno Indeed. Cool, thanks.
@DamkerngT. Because of Linux.
@terdon No problem. :P
17:47
I wonder if there is a true standalone language.
@DamkerngT. How else? Even colonel is pronounced that way.
@DamkerngT. My dictionary says: ˈkəːn(ə)l
@terdon That's my thought! Why is 'colonel' pronounced "kernel"!
@Alenanno Eh? Oh!
17:48
@DamkerngT. That one is because of French.
And it comes from Old English cyrnel, diminutive of CORN.
They kept the spelling from one language and the pronunciation from another (or just changed the pronunciation, don't know)
@Alenanno From the diminutive? Huh, cool.
@terdon One unfortunate result is that Siri always types "colonel" for me every time I say "kernel"!
@terdon Apparently lol
@Alenanno CORN!
17:51
@DamkerngT. Sorry, @M.A.Ramezani ate it all.
Poor 'colonel'!
'Colonel' got eaten by terdon.
:P
Wha?
No no!
It wasn't me. I swear mom!
Oh, it was @M.A.Ramezani who ate 'colonel'.
@DamkerngT. Nah, that was @Jim.
Supper.
I'm still not sure which movie between The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Wolverine that Jim watched in 4D.
<-- Hasn't watched anything in 4D himself, though...
