Liam has removed Liam from the list of this room's owners‌.
Hi All
I'm officially handing over this room to @CharlieBrumbaugh.
A couple of reasons but I'm probably not going to be that active moving forward. I've become somewhat disillusioned with the site and SE in general and I'm tailing down my involvement in lots of areas, this being one of them
@ab2 admittedly when I hear people say it I like to say I'm "Dyson-ing"
@Liam That's a pity to hear, Liam
but I understand
I originally joined TGO to learn and to spread some of my knowledge and love of climbing, wildlife and the mountains. The number of questions I actually find interesting has been diminishing for a while, I've got a baby which is taking up much of my remaining spare time and I'm upset by the increasing monetisation of SE
Much love y'all
:)
I hope it doesn't mean you'll leave!
maybe a reduced involvement, but not a complete exit?
08:07
@Liam babies are most important - always
@Ricketyship Yeah I'll be popping in occasionally and I'll answer the odd interesting question
but I used to sit in here all day, prob not going to do that anymore
I'm also now running my climbing club facebook page which is actually taking quote a lot of time, feel free to follow us facebook.com/ClwydMC ;)
@Liam that's healthy. I typically check chat a couple of times a day, otherwise I only see messages pinging me
otherwise it's a time sink
08:30
@RoryAlsop To use a climbing analogy I think I've been holding on too hard :)
@Liam yeah - I think if I wasn't a mod I'd even use chat in a more relaxed way. As it is I do need to be available (but a ping suffices in most cases). If it isn't fun then stepping away, getting more time, and in your case, focusing on real priorities.
Family needs to always be first
I mean I have moments (not in this site) where I just think "you know what - I going to chill out and go for a walk for a couple of hours"
You have a lot of excellent answers, but if you don't currently enjoy giving them then nobody is going to die if you are less involved.
So - on a more important topic, @Liam: when are you taking your little one for climbing lessons
:-)
08:54
@RoryAlsop Ha, as soon as he's big enough for a harness
I've had him trying to grab my finger board already (he's 7 weeks old)
:D
@Liam nice!
@Liam We found one that fit middle daughter from just over 18 months
@Liam Good thing! :)
Also, future climbers are more important than chats and SE forums :D
@RoryAlsop Yes! Totally. If something consumes your time more than your family, you need to take a step back and reevaluate.
09:48
@RoryAlsop TBh I'm just happy I'm able to get out climbing still

the wife is doing a good job
10:23
@Liam hello stranger
Sad to see you going - especially when I've just popped back!
11:01
@Aravona Just tailing down my involvement, specifically this chat room
You can still ping me! :)

@Liam ping! :) Glad fatherhood is treating you well though!
What did you actually hear @JonathanLandrum?
like billy
Interesting.
Is there a reason why the brain would interpret a specific sound differently?
Hi @Aravona!
Ok apparently itโ€™s related to what frequencies you can hear.
I feel it would also boil down to how you speak or what language you use or what frequencies do you use often.
so a fried was just reading an article on it, and apparently the original recording was done by an opera singer, who was saying "laurel"
but i guess they fucked with the settings or something to test exactly what you were just saying
14:32
god i hope this doesn't turn into another "what color is the dress" fiasco
I thought it was already one.

@Aravona just ot do the proud dad bit for a second ^
:)
Meet Bryn Fox Hughes
He looks super happy ๐Ÿ˜
I woulld remove the link here outdoors.stackexchange.com/a/19401/8794 but then it would just be plagarism
@Liam sad to see you leave somewhat, family does have to take precedence. I will continue the tradition of funny tags in chat :)
15:26
@Liam Amazing! He looks like a cutie, and that's saying something from a "oh lord please take away my uterus I do not want children" person.
Also Fox is an epic name.
@Ricketyship this one is funnier:
you can actively hear whichever combination you want
@Liam Heh - cute!
@RoryAlsop XD this is funny :D
the visuals as well :D

room topic changed to The Base Camp: Welcome to 2018 [an-incident-of-welsh] [hunting-predestrians] [turkeys-in-the-ocean] [what-t-rex-ate]

we need some scatological dinosaur questions
and perhaps a [dinosaur-poo] tag

Hi all, I have just found a spam post.

A: Bike parking in Kyoto

iPMz NlizThank If I rent a bike for sightseeing, is there any parking space to leave it near temples, shrines, markets, etc. (Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari, Nishiki, Gion...)? Is it safe

@Willeke Flagged
Thanks. Do you know whether we have a mod around who is pingable?
I don't think its bad enough to bother a mod about
Flagged too, that's gonna be wiped soon
Thanks.
I was not going to bother a mod who would not be around at this time but I like spam taken care off, comes from having been a spam fighter for many years.

I think posting the links in "non-native" chats already is a pretty significant effort ;)
Oops, I was confused, I thought I had the 'native' chat for it.
Now I have also posted it on its native chat.

travel.se?
wait am i in travel chat
no. you confused me there @Willeke :D
Sorry about that @Ricketyship
Tomorrow I am going to help friends getting ready for their 'out of doors' activities. Clean, pain and outfit their boat.
They have one which is just big enough for 4 people to sleep on and small enough for the local water but big and sturdy enough for coastal sea journeys. (Not that they do them these days, but they have in the past.)
19:16
I am more for the outfitting part, the rope work that needs doing. But I will help with all needed as they are my friends.

@Jonathan Landrum We already have a Q about [extinct giant ground sloth poo](outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/16168/…. So the tag should be "old poo" or maybe "coprolites", rather than extinct species- specific poo. :)
@Sue Welcome back. Hope you are OK. Take a look at the bobkitten questions; they should make you smile.

@Liam, I'm just returning to chat, and to the site, after a bit of a break, but I hope I've caught you in time to say good bye for however long you're gone. I still haven't read the transcript, but I hope your feelings haven't been hurt, or you've felt less than awesome as a contributor. I respect you greatly and have learned a lot from your participation. Gorgeous child by the way!
@ab2, Hi!

@Liam He looks more like a person than babies usually do. Does he look like you? It seems to me he does, but I've never seen a really good pic of you.

I'm good, thanks, and I hope you are too! Now that I've got my energy back, my laptop screen has developed a big crack and I have to drop it off to be fixed, which could take weeks! I do have the SE app on my small Android phone, but I'm not sure how much I can do with it, like reviewing, chatting, etc. I have chrome loaded on it, so hopefully I'll keep my privileges and be able to contribute!
I still haven't looked around much, but it seems that we have new users and more questions, unless I'm wrong. The bobcat kitties are gorgeous! Thanks to @JonathanLandrum for those!
@ab2, it's nice to be here together at the same time! I have lots of transcripts to read. Have you been feeling well in general as a person? Have you been feeling okay about the site? The first is much more important than the second!
@Aravona, I'm so excited to see you back. By any chance, are you into bat conservation? I don't know why I think that, so if it's a ridiculous question, you'll have to forgive me! I've started adoring bats. They're a very underappreciated animal, especially in our culture where we're scared of them.
I love your website by the way. Your dedication to conservation and clean living is really admirable, and so important! Have you been well? How's dynadin?
@WedaPashi, @Willeke, @Ricketyship, @RoryAlsop, @CharlieBrumbaugh, @StrongBad @JonathanLandrum, @Salmansadiq. Hi to everyone. I know Friday afternoon EST is not a great time to reach anyone, but it's what I have for now. I'm returning from removal of skin cancer on my nose. It's basal cell, which is the least dangerous, and has been fully removed, thanks to God and the doctors he sent me to.
Together with sunscreen, I've been advised to wear a hat with at least SPF 50 and an option to cover my shoulders and face, when out gardening or walking. We have questions on the site, but I'm trying to take the shortcut and see if any of you have a recommendation. I love gardening, but am nervous about going out. Also, we had a terrible tick season last year, and are expecting another, so those mesh face covers are protective for that too.
Can anyone recommend something, or at least link me to the most relevant questions? Thanks!!

@Sue I have had several basal cell carcinomas. The first one really freaked me out and I went to the head of my agency, an MD and former VP of Sloan Kettering. He said "I've never known anyone to get in trouble from a basal cell carcinoma. You should really worry if I say 'I can help."" Put on the sunscreen and wear the hat and get screened every four to six months, and soon you will regard it all as a big PIA -- just one of the downsides of being alive but no longer young.
