06:17
Morning @liam @Ara @Rory
So, finally I am back in office and will be more frequently seen in here and TGO :-)
06:33
@WedaPashi morning
@Ara: :) How are you?
07:10
@WedaPashi not that great but I'll survive. How are you? Was your trek good?
@Ara: Trek as in weekend plan?
@Ara: Hope you get better and greater :)
The Expedition I am preparing for is less than a month way.. And still preparing for it.
@WedaPashi ahh my mistake, I think that was the one I was thinking of... How's the prep going?
08:08
@Ara: i am happy with how my fitness appear to be.. More excited and least scared about the expedition :D
08:37
@WedaPashi that's great news! I've found my fitness / stamina is alrwady improving from running twice a week... I swam a lot longer and better than I had expected to :)
@Ara: Thats great. Good work dear!
@WedaPashi thanks :) I'm aiming to follow in Liams footsteps and do one of the UK mountain challenges
@Ara: Thats lovely. :) Wish you all the good luck for that.. When are you planning to do that?
@WedaPashi not this year certainly! We have a lot of plans for next year... Our holiday to Norway, climbing Scarfel Pike, taking our open water diver course. It's going to be a busy year!
08:53
Scarfel Pike? I'll google :)
@Ara: Nice to see things planned up ahead :) Sounds really exciting!
@WedaPashi yeah, may as well get a head start on all the things we want to do ;) will be easier next year as Blaze will be older.
@Ara: Yeah, Pets are fun to have along while camping and other outdoor stuff we do.
@WedaPashi he loves going on hikes, we are doing one on Sat
@Ara: Did you mean every Sat? Lovely!
@WedaPashi no just on this Saturday coming. We're off hiking through the woods with a friend and her dog :)
09:04
@Ara: great :-) My dog doesn't like the rain, so all she does is sit home on my sleeping bag, not listen to what I say/shout at all, make innocent noises and faces when shouted at, shoo away the pigeons and eat ice cream on weekends, and that won't change till September end.
@WedaPashi awww! Blaze doesn't mind the rain and he's happy to wear his coat. I've a week off in Sept, we were going to go away for the week and stay in a cottage but have decided to stay at home and get Blaze used to the tent in our garden!
@Ara: wow. I guess the display picture you have uploaded is of Blaze. Right?
@WedaPashi yeah a few months ago :)
@Ara: Cute!
@WedaPashi thanks :)
09:14
@Ara: Hows Dyna? haven't seen him in here for quite some time now. (Though, I have been gone too)
09:30
@WedaPashi he doesn't venture in that often no.
10:15
@Ara: Okay.
10:27
@WedaPashi he's been working a lot, but has this week off :)
@Ara: Is weather all well there? He works outdoors, right?
@WedaPashi yeah he does. It's been ok... Mostly overcast.
@Ara: Good :-)
@Ara: England won The Ashes. Broad had a great spell that day.
@WedaPashi yeah I know! Was brilliant. Won by an innings
@Ara: :)
10:53
@liam has gone past @Rory in overall reputation. So, @liam is in top 3 now! Congrats @liam, you've been great throughout the time.
@WedaPashi dammit - I knew I should have answered more questions :-)
Well done @Liam
And morning all
@Rory: Well, I respect you a lot for what you have done for this site so far. And, your answers and advice are more valuable than reputation. :-)
@WedaPashi thank you. I do find that on the sites I moderate, my answering goes way down...
priorities
@Rory: True :) But, @liam isn't have gone too far to catch up with.
11:09
@Rory: If I memorize right, I have read you commenting on one of the questions about pre-dosing yourself with Ibuprofen. If thats true, please reconsider doing it. Ibuprofen is banned in various parts of the world.
It's the only non-prescription painkiller I can use. Paracetamol doesn't work for me - plus it gives me ulcers. But I have taken at least 500mg of ibuprofen almost every day since 1996 and it works very well. Keeps me mobile and reduces the pain a lot. Occasionally need codeine it stronger. And occasionally tramadol. It's a necessary part of my life thanks to a single drunk driver
@Rory: Sad :(
I have always believed in not taking pills unless really needed, of course subject to situations, because we then tend to get used to to those pills.
I agree entirely. So I avoid taking medicines if at all possible. Sadly I have no option here - look after your back, kids!
I am not sure how good dailymail is rated in UK.
@WedaPashi very very low
11:23
@Rory: Alright :)
@RoryAlsop have you tried the ibuprofen gels?
Also morning :)
Well damnit, more like afternoon
@Aravona yeah - and heat packs, acupuncture, physio, kinesiotape, reflexology...
@RoryAlsop ouch... My back twinges on occasion, I initially hurt it carrying my niece down the stairs. Luckily my matteress seems to reset my back every night lol!
Still, Mum had slipped discs so I know how hard a bad back can be :(
Yeah - the car came in through my side at 50mph, so a lot of soft tissue damage around my lower 3 vertebrae. Really sucks, as the damage can't actually be repaired, just contained
@RoryAlsop oh shit. Well if we ever go on a trek you'll have to let us look after you. Despite Dyna have a dodgey knee and I have the Hip of an old lady ;)
11:37
@Aravona interestingly, the things that make it more easy to deal with are any form of exercise, and the worst thing is sitting at my desk
So hiking, swimming, snowboarding etc all have a net positive effect
2
@RoryAlsop that's really good. Swimming was very nice on my hip to be honest
@Rory: Oh shit. I didn't knew about the car hit thing.
@Rory: In that case, avoid bike riding as much as you can. And the Bean Bags too.
@WedaPashi cycling is pretty good, and I do a bunch of weight training, squats and bench presses help
climbing is generally good too
@Rory: Yes, Cycling is. I meant Motorbikes.
@WedaPashi my motorbike is pretty comfy actually. Not as good as my car, but good suspension
11:53
@Rory: Cool. Is that a cruise bike?
@WedaPashi yeah Yamaha 750 XTC Super Tenere
More a Paris - Dakar bike, toned down for the road
@Rory: Lovely!
12:08
@RoryAlsop nice bike ;)
I have found the NHS livewell website has some decent exercises for my hip and Dynas knee... The NHS isn't too useless ;)
@Aravona my mother in law used to be chief physio for Ayrshire, so got some good guidance and exercises from her. And I have a lovely physio who beats me up at least once a month
What exactly shire means?
@WedaPashi shire is basically a bit like county... Almost every British county has shire after it. Even if we drop the shire often. Devon is actually Devonshire, but it's not commonly called it.
@Ara: Ahh, I see. I always wondered what the shire mean for Lancashire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, etc
12:24
@WedaPashi it's just an easier way of saying the county of, like Buckinghamshire is the county of Buckingham :)
Though commonly like I said we shorten them... Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire become Beds, Bucks and Herts... Much easier and quicker!
@Aravona and The Shire is where the hobbits live
@Rory: LOL :D
@Ara: Okay, Thanks for the info :-)
@RoryAlsop The Shire of MiddleEarth was I believe based on Wiltshire but we in Bucks regularly refer to Bucks as The Shire!
@Ara: Then its somewhat similar to suffix Pur, pronounce as Poo-oo-r. e.g. Nagpur, Madhopur, Jamshedpur, etc
@WedaPashi yeah I would assume so :)
12:38
@Ara: :)
@Aravona there is a part of Edinburgh (Stockbridge) referred to as The Shire by Ingress players. We also have Helms Deep, Minas Tirith and some others
@RoryAlsop haha wonderful!
13:08
new face in here @M'vy: Welcome :-)
@WedaPashi Hey there. Our @RoryAlsop linked something he said. So I checked the content of the chat room / associated SE site :)
@M'vy: Oh, Okay. Welcome, anyways :-)
Thanks :)
@M'vy afternoon
We usually chatter here about lots of things apart from Outdoor activities as well.
13:12
@WedaPashi well lot of chat rooms get that too.
@M'vy: i guess thats what the Chat rooms are for :-)
security for example is more about: . In that order
@M'vy: hahaha :D Liked the forth one the most :P @Rory
Turns out, there is a lot of rorying involved in security :)
@M'vy: haha :D Thats what being @Rory is about :D
13:15
but don't wrory, we have it under conrol.
2
:D Great!
@M'vy: We talk about lot of stuff like, nothing, anything, God, Music, Animals, Mountains, Medicines, Football, Cricket, Chocolates, Liquor, etc

Q: Is any subspecies of black bear more -- or less -- aggressive than another?

ab2There are 16 subspecies of Ursus americanus, the black bear. The Wikipedia article describes their different physical characteristics and geographical distributions, but not differences in temperament. The article discusses attacks on humans, and attributes the majority to habituation to people...

^ @RoryAlsop can we assume it depends on how much reputation he has?
hahaha :D
@WedaPashi Well I'll stick there a while I guess, and see what happens :)
Hum seems like bears are a thing here to:

Q: US vs central European bear advice

David MulderI was just reading through a couple of posts here on outdoors.SE and saw some advice which was a lot more strict than I am used to. For example, in the country where I hike (central europe, brown bears, but that's it) you wouldn't worry about the tent or shirt you sleep in smelling after food fro...

@M'vy: Yep, we have lots of question about 'em.
13:21
hum "outdoormanship" that's a new word
@M'vy it's used quite often here :)
Also, hi!
@Aravona Hi all the same :)
@M'vy you are however right we have had some focus on bears recently. Not that they are any sort of issue in the UK hah, but t does help when treking abroad to know the issues with wildlife.
@Aravona ahah
I#m curious about the topics here. Is there a meta post about on/off-topicness ?
Or should I lookup the area51 definition
@M'vy the thing with TGO is it does cover a vast range of topics. And we do overlap with a few other sites a little... But generally if it's an outdoors activity that is leisure not sport, you're probably fine to ask.
We do like some identification questions, as a lot link to hunting and foraging as well :)
13:26
Bears on Sec.SE are very much a thing:

A: The Memes of Information Security

Rory AlsopMeme: Bears Originator: @ThomasPornin, @ScottPack, @AviD Cultural Height: July 2011 Background: Our highest rep user, cryptographer Thomas Pornin created a couple of distinct accounts with bear avatars. Being a rather prominent and respected member of the community, this has earned him som...

@M'vy: I am afraid we don't a meta post discussing "whats on-topic/off-topic", but as @Ara said, we have a wide range of questions that are considered valid. Say from Bird Identification to High Altitude mountaineering.
@WedaPashi basically we suggest ask then we'll decide if its on topic lol
@Ara: Nicely put! :D
Yeah sure. I'll see if I find something
@Ara @M'vy @Rory: Do we need a meta post for that?
13:29
@WedaPashi My opinion: if we think we should then we should. If we think it's okay, then no
@WedaPashi I don't think we're inundated enough to warrant one? Most questions come from old hats.
.
Though we've had a decent influx of newer people recently.
Oh, but it's already open beta. So it's fine I guess.
I've just been used to look for these ones when I reach a new stack :)
@Rory: I think we don't need to, since like @Ara said, we have hardly had any questions that needed to be closed off as Off-topic. But again, thats just my opinion.
@WedaPashi haha well mostly I think we close as duplicates or opinion based... Because we all have a bloody opinion on bloody everyhing... Bloody outdoorsmen, they ruined the outdoors.
@Ara: haha, such an apt comment!
@Rory: The meme link you just shared looks hilarious :D Bloody, almost made me spill coffee on my keypad.
13:36
@WedaPashi On Security, look at the rep of those top two users. Both bears.
@liam is a bear too!
And what makes it even more impressive is that they are the same person
@Rory: :O
@RoryAlsop I'm so lost on the bear thing. Am I missing something obvious?!
@Aravona Thomas (and Tom, his alter ego) is incredibly smart - one of the top cryptographers in the world - and writes very very amusing answers. He is more productive on Sec.SE than our next few folks put together.
13:44
Can you share the link to his Sec.SE profile @Rory?
@RoryAlsop that's actually amazing haha
With 2 accounts, he actually almost tops the cumulative rep of the next 6 accounts
Well I used a bit of rounding so
Thats amazing!
yup - and he uses them for different things - there is literally no contact between the two
(we have to check these things)
13:47
@Rory: Didn't get you. (Sorry, goofying again :D)
(we have to check these things).
@RoryAlsop You mean we can draw a non intersecting Venn diagram for both bear expertise?
@M'vy no no... No maths. I can't do maths. It hurts my head
@WedaPashi sock puppeting - using one account to vote for another - is disallowed on SE
Not that I'm a php web developer and use maths every day in complicated vehicle data or anything.
oops it's Venn (not Wenn :)
13:49
@Rory: Ahh, the dirty trick! But, the same user has raked rep on other SE sites as well.
@RoryAlsop Well I'm pretty sure he does not need his own +1 :)
@RoryAlsop that's fair, though it always sucks when you're one vote off the next K haha
Alright people, carry on. I am off for the day. Good Evening, Good night. :)
@WedaPashi see you
@Aravona The next K is totally irrelevant to him :)
@WedaPashi see you!
13:51
@WedaPashi cya mate! Have a good one.
@M'vy yes - he is amassing a good collection of gold badges though
@M'vy yeah but when I was stuck at 2995 for weeks without a question in mind and we only had climbing questions I did go a bit mad hah
@Aravona that's only relevant to us, simple mortals
@M'vy I'm not a simple mortal. I'll have you know I'm a complete and utter achievement wh*re.... I wish that were a lie.
:)
@RoryAlsop I'm sick, we don't have that profile at Sec.se
still running the old one
13:55
@M'vy hah you should see my xbox live, my Steam, my Googple Play Games, my PSN... And now my fitbit.
Achievement wise you mean?
@M'vy yes, I wasn't kidding I'm a tad addicted to gaining achievements
:)) I usually don't go for them, cause they need to play in some way I don't like to.
hi everyone
hello
14:09
@Aravona lol
@Aravona On gaming platforms, and now on SE, and especially on Ingress, I love my cheevos
@imsodin heya!
@RoryAlsop oh you do ingress?
I've heard about that one
@RoryAlsop hehe... The fitbit having one is insane... An achievement that helps me get fitter! Woo.
@M'vy Rory is sort of King of Ingress.
@M'vy very much - I don't get much time, but I'm Level 15, and maybe 8th in Scotland...
14:32
@RoryAlsop These memes are hilarious. And I wasn't aware that you are a living dinosaur ;P
@imsodin lol
@imsodin Dinosaurs? Pah - those youngsters...
@RoryAlsop Considering the quark-gluon plasma - they really are!
@imsodin pffft
@imsodin The memes thing has actually grown into quite a fun meta post. Occasional new additions keep it fresh
What is that last one? it depends??
@M'vy ? pardon ?
14:46
@RoryAlsop No, just checked what was the last one added
Never read it
@M'vy ahh - I have them sorted by votes so wasn't sure what you meant :-)
Yeah, the last one is "it depends"
not sure I agree to its meme status though
