Hello Everyone!
06:42
Howdy!
So what have I missed?
@requiem: Hi there!
That must be one big tent you have to carry...
@ara: Umm, even I was off the grid for 2 days, so I can't say.. @liam was not here too
@requiem: It indeed it.
@ara: how was your weekend?
@nhinkle: Hi there!
@Rory: Here comes the Mod! :D
Pfffft
Morning
06:52
@Rory: Morning :-) How was the weekend?
@WedaPashi was good thanks. Fairly chilled out, and went to a friend's baby's christening. Very chilled out - did nothing significant :-)
How about you
@Weda my whole week off was great except I got sick when we went camping :(
It has lead to one or two questions for TGO though lol...
Further proof that everybody in this room lives on the other side of the pond, I'm about to go to sleep!
@nhinkle lol - you west coast US?
@RoryAlsop yep
06:55
it's another autumnal morning here in Scotland
Scotland, hm? You guys are thinking of giving the ol' british independence thing a try, I hear.
@nhinkle oh lord, don't! It's the biggest pile of nonsense. I blame Braveheart and Mel Gibson
At least all the fuss will be over by the end of this week
Haha. It's mildly amusing for Americans because everybody's thinking "oh, yeah we tried that once... it went okay..."
@Rory my friends scottish mother and english father are heading up to their Inverness house on vote day... We think them a tad mad!
Her dad said he was going to put on his beat english posh accent... My mate said how would he like his funeral to go.
Best*
@Aravona FYI you can just hit the up arrow key to edit your previous message if you mistype something
07:02
@nhinkle yeah i know but its piss annoying to edit on a phone dude
@Aravona ah, yes. Chat on a phone = not an easy experience.
They need to work on the mobile chat.
@nhinkle yup so thats why i just post the amend after lol
@Rory: I did a trek this weekend, except for a aching shoulders, everything is great :-) Saw a leopard cub :-) Damn Happy about it!
@ara: Aww, falling sick on camping is so annoying. Get well soon!
@Weda I am well lol... And yeah. My whole kit needed a good wash when we got home lol
We did get some good geocaching in when we were in Weymouth though!
07:07
We are doing this thing called Open London this weekend
Open London?
You get to go in London buildings which are normally closed to the public and we are taking a friend to go and see Paddock, one of Churchills war rooms.
Welp, actually going to sleep now. Hope you all have a great day!
If we are still sober from Fridays street fair haha :P
Night @nhinkle
@nhinkle later
07:09
Gods! that it huge! Make your companions carry it?
@requiem: Yeah, true. But we already had heavy stuff with us, we went for solar lamp distribution (as a part of charity that we do), so we were already a bit heavily packed.
My coworker is trying to get me to go to a halloween geocaching event
@requiem for a hiking tent that is pretty big...
@Aravona Heh nice - gets you out the way of trick-or-treaters. Off the back of that gig in Orkney, we've been asked to do a big Halloween gig. Which will be fun.
@Rory: It was a two day trek, and a rather off the route thing. First day we all were doing great, the next day, we were not feeling out shoulders and limbs, it was just mechanical.. :D
@WedaPashi yeah, I can imagine!
07:17
@Rory awesome! You guys come pre dressed up too ;)
Overall this Open London sounds amazing :-) I'll ask my cousin to try and be there. I don't think he has ever been to Open London thing, as I haven't heard of it from him. Though he lives in North London, Fulham.
@requiem: BTW, where are you from?
California!
@Aravona :-)
(currently scoping out some backcountry ski gear for winter)
@WedaPashi I love the Open Edinburgh / Glasgow ones as well
07:23
@Rory: Edinburgh is beautiful as my sister told me. I'd love to be there on a tour someday. :-)
@requiem: Thats good. :-)
...and it's off to bed for me as well. Have fun!
@requiem: okay. Good Night!
Where is @liam today? Hope he had a good trek on weekend!
@Weda we hadn't heard of open London either until we looked into visiting Paddock :)
@Rory I am so excited to go to Edinburgh! :D

Q: How to clean vomit from camping gear?

AravonaSome background. Whilst car camping down in Weymouth recently I was unfortunate enough to encounter a stomach bug (we initially thought it was food poisoning but later realised it was a bug as my other half developed the same symptoms over 3 days later). I ended up making a mess inside the tent, ...

Delicious question for everyone! :P
@Aravona you poor thing!
@Rory yeah it wasn't fun but at least Haven has good facilities!!
I'm just glad my sleeping bag is machine washable
@Aravona definitely! Your question has strong merit though - imagine you are a week away from civilisation and all your kit is covered in vomit from someone with a nasty stomach bug. That's got to have major health implications.
08:21
@Ara: Feel bad for you. Added tag for Hygiene.
08:31
@Rory yeah and I don't usually trek but plan to in the future so if anyone has experience Id love to hear it
@Weda thanks! And it could have been worse. I got out the tent 3 out of 4 times lol!!
@Aravona Amazing
Morning all
Weekend work climbing trip was successful!
though one of the guys only did the first 100 yards then sat in the car for the next 6 hours???!
I'm the one in blue if anyone is interested!
@Liam injured?
@Liam good work fella
@RoryAlsop Nah, just gave up!
Said it was too hard
@Liam 100 yards! Was it hard enough that you were roping etc?
@RoryAlsop No! That was just the footpath!
08:35
lol - maybe the poor guy has a secret fear of heights and didn't want to embarrass himself?
That's all the excuses I can think of used up
Seemed a long way to come to simply give up but I had spent a long time explaining it was going to by physically demanding!
@Liam brilliant!
Lack of fitness was the issue
Got a great shot of my co worker hovering on Adam and Eve
@Liam photoshopped!
@RoryAlsop ha ha, just well timed!
08:44
Lol!
09:08
I think I may of just made myself very busy....
Now everyone wants me to take them up a mountain!
@Aravona Having you considered getting a dog to lick it off...if I have trouble like this fester normally helps out
@Liam currently we have no dog... Though the crows ate what was outside the tent lol...

1 hour later…
10:44
@Aravona, that question's a tough one..?!
@Liam -- That's become a real problem with our local hiking groups too. People who come and then decide they can't handle it (even for relatively easy trips) so stay in the car.
@Aravona -- Step 1, don't puke in the tent :P That's not really helpful though. No idea how I'd clean that with my typical setup.
@Liam I don't see why you commented. It is a clearly delibrately generalised question. One cannot always aim when vomiting... So it could be ANY gear
@Russell I got outside three out of four times. That was a miracle in itself. Just glad I made it to the bog when the other end had a turn.
@Aravona Just trying to clarify, cleaning a tent is going to be very different to cleaning a sleeping bag. I was trying to think of a good solution. It's hard though?
@RussellSteen It's not as if I hadn't warned the guy either. I went over th top if anything playing up how hard it was going to be
@Liam might be best then to just wait and see if anyone else answers?
The tent wipes clean easily when we had towels for example. I do not think the integrity of the tent was effected by the vomit as it was the second go so just acidy water. My thinking is... If you unfortunately get sick out trekking... What would you do... Find a stream and clean it all up and leave it out to dry for a few days? Treat it like wet mud and leave it to dry then scrape it off...? Lol I hope someone has a few ideas
The reason I left it generalised is you might just be walking and having a break then puke on someones bag... All this ran through my head when being sick haha
I do have another related question for this too.
Well, I gave it a shot.
Really it's just "how to clean vomit", and assuming it would work for gear too
@Aravona -- That would be my fear. I generally know and have plenty of warning when I am going to puke. Now you have me worried about other people puking on me :P
11:01
@Russell that is no where near how I clean vomit up so that's actually some good info :) and as for the stream that was more of a comment cos that's how we clean boots around here as no stream is drinking water :P
@Russell I heavily salivate before being sick, and it's always a sweet taste, it's nasty.
@Aravona -- Sorry, I wasn't trying to snark at you about the stream, but it did come across that way. I was more thinking of random people who might read it later. :(
@Russell no worries makes sense anyway to state that. If using stream water we would fill up a kettle or something :)
I have another question about people care away from creature comforts when it comes to vomiting... My other half who had the bug three days later had the comfort of home and television to make life easier. And a bin to puke in haha
Usually thats why I don't have sick to clean up... I just have a bucket to.
11:54
@liam: Hey buddy!
@WedaPashi Hey Weda
@liam: Nice pictures :-)
@WedaPashi :)
12:52
Quiet in here today
13:02
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Better :) @Aravona
It was like this last week!
I'm pretty busy at the mo so I'm having to leave this to one side a little :)
Question rates jumped up again, BTW

13:16
@Liam great and yeah RAAAAAAWWWWRRRR
My code is misbehaving.
@ara intimidate your code into submission, works everytime
@soph if only... This damn mvc is a pain
Whole thing is badly made
i thought mvc was the new be-all and end-all
@Aravona MVC is awesome! It was the future (it's now MVVM). You obviously never had to build ASP.Net web forms!
mvvm sounds way silly
13:29
@soph-e Model-View-View-Model.... :) things like Angular and Backbone.js
Though personally I'm not convinced...
You's should have a peak at
yeah my experience with mvc is pretty much limited to the tutorial on microsoft's website
@soph-e Nothing wrong with that. I think that's where I learned it too
yeah the sad part is that we did that tutorial for the majority of a 15 weeks course I had
teacher would read the tutorial in front of the class, then we'd do a really similar project on our own
was super lame
@soph-e Sounds like lazy teaching!
little bit
13:42
MVC works better, I think, because the old (.net way anyway) was trying to make the web work like windows forms, which it just doesn't. MVC uses proper HTTP requests, like you used to have to do back in the day. This makes sense because the web uses HTTP!
any hooooo
:)
I've been writing this stuff for like 15 years now though...
I'm old :-(
;)
lol!
@liam: How old are you?
@WedaPashi I had to count then...that's surely a sign your too old
33
@liam: haha :D I am nearly a decade younger than you :-)
Your only as old as the girl you feel.....
Wow, that sounds pervy
:P
13:52
@liam: Duh!
I am clearly not ready to be back to work after my holiday / illness
I just tried to submit my form by having the action in the div.
Seriously? I have a degree in this... Though too my coworker just as long to realise my mistake haha
@Ara: haha.. :D
@Aravona It's always the little annoying bugs that take the longest to find!
I loooove Mondays...
@Aravona yeah
I can't be arsed
13:58
@Liam yeah... This one was hilarious
@soph-e Wouldn't this question be a good one for you?

Q: Legal permits required for trekking in Canada

Segmentation FaultI will be travelling to Canada for a business trip, and I can spare a weekend in between my schedule. I'd be keen to trek/hike near Vancouver, and I have banked upon hiking The Stawamus Chief. As I'll be there as a technocrat, am I legally allowed to hike in Canada? Or do I have to comply to any ...

uhhhhhhhhhhh I've not heard of any permits required to hike anywhere in here :/
user116848
@Liam Nice pics above!
user116848
hi all
@soph: Oh, thats bad
@Arrowfar: Hi
14:05
there's got to be information on the websites of whatever park the trail is on, I can maybe check. I'd think if a local hiker doesn't need a permit, then a foreign hiker wouldn't need one either
@soph: Its kinda same here in India as well. You don not permits except for trekking/hiking in restricted forests and sanctuaries, and Himalayas
@Arrow howdy
user116848
@Aravona howdy!
@Arrow hows it going?
user116848
@weda Yes, trekking is fun!
user116848
14:09
@Aravona Good I guess. It seems like a adventure chat so I come here :-)
Hi @Arrowfar! Welcome to TGO chat
@Liam I found this information: "Officially open May 15 - October 12. If you go outside these dates you just have to walk in from outside the gates and camping is free however there are no services available which means that the washrooms may be locked and no water available" from squamishhiatus.com/squamishhikes/thestawamuschief.html, not sure if this type of website is reliable enough to base an answer on
Un less you've been and I've not noticed, which is possible...
user116848
@Liam Thanks! Nice pics pal :-)
@Arrowfar Glad you like them. Was a work thing, dragged some people who don't normally go inot the hills up a mountain in north wales
user116848
14:11
@Liam I see :) Looks like a fun place though
@soph-e I'm not sure! Never hiked in Canada. Maybe you don't need a permit?
@Arrowfar Yeah it's good, Grade I scramble so nothing too crazy. Everyone really enjoyed it!
@Liam what area of canada was it? I could ask my brother
^ cannon rock
@liam: I envy you mann, such an awesome country :-)
user116848
@Liam Nice one.
14:14
@Aravona I'm getting your and @soph-e mixed up!! near Vancouver
@WedaPashi Wales == Gods country
user116848
It looks pretty dangerous there :)
@liam: This room is alive :-) Glad about it!
user116848
Yay!
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau
user116848
Most of the time chat is dead here
14:15
@Arrowfar Nah it's fine
user116848
I see
@liam yeah i'm on the coast opposite of vancouver ;)
There's normally a handful of us in here on and off
@soph-e I get easily confused
@soph-e I also forget Canada is so big
@Arrowfar: I agree that its sometime dead room, but then when we chat in here, its fun, and that is too frequent to be called as dead :-)
user116848
@weda Are there cool places in India to camp?
14:17
@Arrowfar: More than a thousand :-)
user116848
I see :)
@Arrowfar: Where are you from?
@Liam Wales is absolutely lovely
user116848
@WedaPashi I am from Pakistan BTW. In north we have some good places too
user116848
Like India may be :)
14:18
user116848
Where is this?
@Arrowfar: Oh, I see :-) We kinda live in similar sort of a weather :-)
user116848
@WedaPashi haha yes!
@Arrowfar: Its Sahyadris, the Western ghats :-)
user116848
I see. Looks nice
14:19
@Arrowfar: i dream about wandering the region neat Gasherbum and Broad Peak :-)
user116848
But in subcontinent weather is hot usually. Which is what I hate the most :)
user116848
@WedaPashi Yes. That area is like Western world.
user116848
I have been near K2 but not very near you know.
The closest thing I have to me nature wise is a forest they plan to destroy :/
user116848
@Aravona Oh, no
14:21
@Arrowfar: Umm, not really, the region is incomparably beautiful :-)
user116848
@WedaPashi You mean Subcontinent region or Western region?
user116848
Oh, you mean Gasherbum etc.
user116848
I see. Yes it is
@Arrowfar: Every region painted by nature is a bliss to me :-) Be it Afgan deserts or be it Vietnam rivers, or be it the Alps :-)
user116848
@WedaPashi Very true :)
14:23
@Arrow yeah all for the good of High Speed 2
user116848
hah
I love how well a question about vomit went haha...
@Ara: IMHO, Its fairly a good question :-)
@Weda yeah and I did say I wanted more experience before asking / answering another question lol!
@Liam has it right... The more you go out and do the more you think of
@Ara: Yeah, true. I love this question a lot though.
13
A: How do you locate the "North Star"?

WedaPashiYou need to know if you are in Northern Hemisphere or in Southern Hemisphere or nearby the Equator. If you are in Northern Hemisphere: First locate the Polaris. Its the last star in The Ursa Minor. I've had trouble in location it sometimes. If you are in such a situation, try locating The Ursa ...

14:33
@Weda I'm no good with any stars except the orion constellation... But I was so shocked at the number of stars you can see from my local hill at night... It was like a blanket of them... And yet from home you can see almost none but the brightest...
ugh "you need at least 10 reputation to post more than 2 links" How am i supposed to answer without heavily cited answers :P
@Ara: Yeah, that true.. Its more fun when you start locating things :-)
@Soph just post an answer and when it's upvoted once edit it?
yeah, it's no biggie
Lol we can always upvote you ;)
It's not like we haven't a bit before haha
14:39
@soph: Let us know :-)
sorted it for you @soph-e
haha, thanks
2
A: Legal permits required for trekking in Canada

soph-eFrom the park's own website: A permit is not required for front-country camping, hiking, moorage, etc. in most parks. Campsite reservations are accepted at many front-country parks. To be absolutely sure, you could try contacting the park itself. As a bonus, this page has a lot of gene...

I'm bang on 1500 rep lol
2
puu.sh/bA3AJ/12e3d9869e.png heh, as if I wasn't doing that already ;)
3
14:45
@Ara: Kudos to that! :-)
user116848
After trekking at a nice place, I hate coming back to city. Because it's very peaceful in the wild :-)
I love living where I do. No city. Some forest... Mostly fields but driving distance from most places. Just a shame I can't enjoy whats around more
@arrow: There is always a flip-side to it. People there in the wild are more crazy about gadgets and city life. Thats being Human!
user116848
@Aravona You are very luck pal :-)
user116848
@WedaPashi Yes that's true too lol
user116848
14:48
@Aravona So why can't you enjoy it more? I don't understand
@WedaPashi when I was a kid, living north wales was drag. You were miles from anything. It's why I think I lived in a big city for so long but these days, with broad band and a Tesco on every corner you can get pretty much anything in the country as you can in the city
In the UK anyway!
We're a very overpopulated country
user116848
@Aravona You mean too busy to enjoy?
UK has the same population as France but half the landmass! (in case anyone is interested)
user116848
I think Subcontinent is the overpopulated one lol
@liam: If not India, then I would have loved to be born in Norway or Alaska (I know Alaska is not a country, and is a State) :-)
user116848
14:52
I would love to go to Tongus forest one day
user116848
Looks very nice there
@WedaPashi Norway's a lovely place. My ex's sister lived in Bergen we used to go visit sometimes
I love where I live, its a city, major city in India, but a couple of hours drive/ride, and you are in a wildlife sanctuary where you'd get to see a Leopard Cub, or get a 1.5K feet wall to climb, or may b a 2.5K feet wall to rappel :-) , or drive a little longer, and get a white sand beach. Its all about willingness. Even a simple hike does feel good, if you love being outdoors :-)
user116848
@WedaPashi Nice!
@Liam Canada has an absolutely insane landmass, and a minuscule population in comparison!
14:56
@soph: Thats good. :-)
user116848
Populated areas aren't fun to live in
See, the room is alive. Stop calling it dead, its dormant at times, not dead :-) #Cheers!
@weda except everything is super far, and telecommunications are way expensive because the network has to cover a multiple of the distance to reach a small subset of the population
@Arrow because of work yeah
user116848
I see :-)
14:58
@soph: I kinda have an attraction for Canada.. btw, Bryan Adams is a canadian :-)
When Europeans come to visit, they are surprised they can't drive all over in one weekend!
@soph: lol, thats true..
@Liam if I could have a hut in the middle of nowhere with broadband I'd be happy lol
user116848
@soph-e Yes no one can drive all over Canada in one weekend :)
@Soph where my step dad is from it takes an hour ro drive across
14:59
@Ara: lol @ With Broadband
user116848
@Aravona I agree. Braodband is a must :-)
@ara jeez, in an hour I'm not outside of my city
@Weda how else would I bother you lot??
@Ara: You win :-) :D
@Soph hes from Maurice aka Mauritius
user116848
15:00
@Aravona Where are you from btw?
user116848
If you don't mind me asking that is
@Arrow boring old blighty. Southern England.
@Arrow: @Ara is an astronaut :D
user116848
@WedaPashi I don't believe it :-)
@Ara: :P
user116848
15:01
So what is an astronaut is doing in Southern England.
@soph-e Literally 5 min walk and I'm in a field!
user116848
You guys are messing I guess :)
@Liam grocery shopping must be annoying where you're at ;)
@Ara: please tell him :D
5 min walk, I can be in a grocery store
15:02
@liam: Oh, that great
@soph: rofl :D
user116848
@Aravona Is this for real? Astronaut talk? :-)
5 min walk, and I'll still be in company premises :P
user116848
@soph-e So stores are close to where you live?
15:03
@liam okay now I'm jealous
@liam: Such a lovely place :-)
@soph-e One shop, no pub
user116848
I never get jealous
user116848
It's not a good thing imo
user116848
:-)
15:04
Just ignore the cemetery...!
cemeteries can be nice...if you don't find them too glum
user116848
@Liam Very nice place pal
One of my fav spots to go for a run, about 2 min drive
@soph-e Fester likes to poo by the gate...don't tell anyone
user116848
I think liam is the luckiest guy in the room ;-)
@Arrowfar It's a big change to where I lived like 2 months ago
City centre of liverpool. Right in the middle
15:06
google.ca/maps/dir/45.4329266,-73.6313314//… the view from the end of my street
@Weda @Arrow I'm scared of flying lol not an astronaut
user116848
@Aravona Yes I knew it was a joke :-) (Astronauts usually camp on moon)
My previous views! ha ha
@soph-e Pharmaprix! ha ha are you kidding! This is hilarious in UK english
@liam mm that looks nice too
user116848
So these images from google maps are from the road cameras?
user116848
15:08
I never get that how they make it?
@Liam an english translation would be pharmaprice, not very different :P
@Arrowfar they have cars driving around with cameras on the roof
@soph my sister used to be on our local google maps lol
user116848
@soph-e I see. You are not kidding, right?
She got caught on the camera like 6 times you can see her moving around her road
15:10
there are some really funny things on google maps, people falling and all kinds of stuff
@Aravona At least she wasn't shop lifting
@soph and some scary stuff too!
user116848
@Aravona Who? lol Sophe?
@Arrow my sister
user116848
Oh, I see
15:11
@arrow her sister, who is not me :P
user116848
@soph-e thanks for the link! I didn't know
user116848
@soph-e i see :-)
I'm not sure what their business model is with the street view, but it sure is useful (and fun!)
user116848
Yes it is
15:12
@soph-e It's about google owning everything!
:)
@Liam lol!
To be fair google maps / streetview is helping me buy a house
They can own everything as far as I'm concerned, I think they tend to do a great job!
#googleFan
I like their ISP efforts in wherever, Texas
@soph-e Don't get me wrong I actually like what google does but their business model is all about owning all the data
15:17
once they have it all it'll be worth $$$
user116848
May be there aren't any competitors to Google Maps
@Arrowfar Bing maps are pretty good
was there...apple maps?
@soph-e yeah but who cares....#hateapple
3
:)
15:18
hahahaha!!
there aren't any apple products in my household ;)
user116848
Me too. Apple is very expensive too
user116848
I use Dell products :-)
user116848
Or Intel etc.
@liam: Totally agreed. #HateApple!
user116848
15:21
Plus in camping all we need is some groceries and an internet connection :D
user116848
No Apple needed.
user116848
They would be pissed if they visit here lol
lol
@Liam haha gases... You don't want me doing that in a tent lol
15:43
@Ara: I hogged, again :D
15:58
outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/6732/… anyone want to let this guy know why he might be getting downvoted?
16:26
@soph-e Written a little something
thanks! it always sucks having a question with downvotes and zero response
