Its 27 days in a row, and I m just 3 days away from getting my first Enthusiast at StackeExchange. But, I am gonna miss it :-( Leaving got a trek tonight and I am pretty sure that I'll not be having internet access till Sunday night. :-(
But yeah, Mountains beat SE->Badges
@WedaPashi booooo
08:35
What's everyone's plans for the weekend? the weather is looking awesome in the UK!
@liam: Seriously
Thats my weekend plan :-)
Jon
Jon
08:52
really nice - in the Alps the weather looks poor :(
we only will go to the bouldering halls.
@WedaPashi: which mountain is it?
@Jon: Hi there
@Jon Was doing that last night!
I climbed crap so just did as many pull ups as I could and went home in a sulk!
@Jon: Its a Fort called Vasota, in India.
@Jon: Here is the location: wikimapia.org/…
Jon
Jon
how high is it?
09:26
@Jon: Not much, its an easy trek. Its roughly 3.9K feet.
@Jon: I am planning a long ~80 km hike around the same sanctuary.
@liam: All set for Tryfan?
09:42
@WedaPashi 4000 feet is pretty high for the UK
We have no mountain over 3500 feet
@WedaPashi Need to pack tonight but apart from that, yep!

3 hours later…
13:11
I'm so happy, I finally got the pictures from my mountaineering trip earlier this summer ^^
@soph-e Cool! You sharing any?! :)
^ this is what mountaineering is all about
2
I'm looking forward to taking photos of my co-workers s*iting themselves tomorrow! ;)
haha you gotta share those ;)
@soph-e Long walk?
ha ha
13:15
oh yeah
we had woken up around 1am that day
and walked until 8 or 9 am
@soph-e Hardcore
summit day!
Is they guy standing up trying to attack the others with an axe?!
Not much need for that kind of stuff in the UK
That's why I want to make the jump over to France and the Alps
haha no, I don't think there were any vicious ice axe attacks on our trip
@soph-e ...yet
13:17
but it is an ice axe
haha!
your coworkers should be worried...
@soph-e I'm not taking an axe!
Fortunately
....for them, yeah
It's going to be really nice weather actually I don't expect to see any snow or ice
@soph-e What mountain?
Wallunarahu (Ancash Quechua walluy to cut, wallu earless, someone whose ears are amputated -na a nominalising suffix, Quechua rahu snow, ice, mountain with snow, hispanicized spelling Vallunaraju) is a mountain in the Cordillera Blanca in the Andes of Peru, about 5,686 metres (18,655 ft) high. It is situated in the Ancash Region, Huaraz Province. Wallunarahu lies south west of the Ranrapallqa and the Uqshapallqa. == Images == == References... ==
my one and only mountaineering experience so far ;)
...you can understand I'm a little hyped for finally getting the picture proofs that I wuz there :P
@soph-e Peru...nice! I've heard of the peak
I'd love to get into the Andes
13:24
You really should, the locals are amazing
...the mountains are nice, too ;)
@soph-e What's your next mountain then?!
well I've been going to 5000feet mountains lately
otherwise I don't have any big things planned
@soph-e Bear in mind the highest "mountain" in UK is about 3500 feet!
Ben Nevis (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Nibheis, pronounced [peˈɲivəʃ]) is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Standing at 1,344 metres (4,409 ft) above sea level, it is located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William. The mountain is a popular destination, attracting an estimated 100,000 ascents a year, around three-quarters of which use the Pony Track from Glen Nevis. The 700-metre (2,300 ft) cliffs of the north face are among the highest in the United Kingdom, providing classic scrambles and rock climbs of...
Oh it's higher than I thought 4409'
yeah I hiked up this one last weekend:
Giant Mountain is the twelfth highest peak in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Park, in New York, USA. The peak is also known as "Giant of the Valley," due to its stature looking over Keene Valley and St. Huberts to the west. The prominent rock slides on the mountain's steep western face and its location away from most other large peaks make it quite an imposing figure, leading to its name. == Ascents == On 2 June 1797, Charles Broadhead and his survey party made the first recorded ascent of Giant Mountain, recorded as Giant-of-the-Valley. They were surveying the boundaries of the ...
(with the most original name)
@soph-e ha ha
13:35
I've not been planning outings lately though, what with school being new and stressful :P
@soph-e Hows it going?
All making sense?
first week of classes, so I don't have any deadlines to worry about yet ;)
Is that college or university? I get confused by the education system you have over there
I'll have my first software design lab this afternoon actually
university
What's college? Or is that only America?
We don't have college's
13:36
We don't really have colleges where I am, no
@soph-e Ah cool. Well that's easy then!
we have CEGEPs though, which are the last year of high school + the first year of university mashed up in a two year program
@soph-e Maybe like a HND here?
I'm not sure
which means that technically, my software engineering degree should take 3 years, although my school added a fourth year for internships
Been some time since I was in Uni :)
13:38
I've never heard of HND!
@soph-e Yeah same as mine
I worked for the Archdiocese of Liverpool
Bizarrely...
Nuns are mental
lol!
completely unrelated, but I had it open in another tab: Have you heard of youtube.com/watch?v=WyRKVHJOwAk ?
looks well made
I'm off to this later in the year
It may well be on there
They have loads of mountain films
ohhhh nice
oh that trailer is amazing
why's nature gotta be so badass
Just told another guy in my office thius
writes good adventure books about climbing
he's a brit climber done a lot in Yosemite
That reminded me of him
13:44
screw my degree, I want to go to that movie festival :P
alternatively, there's gotta be stuff like that where I live...hmm
@soph-e I'd imagine so!
Totally obsessed with this women's music right now
that's pretty cool
Maybe a bit "British" :)
Very London
i've been totally into this band lately (although totally different style - it's a lot more ambient):
so upbeat <3
in other news, gotta go get ready for class :P
@Liam oooh - never heard of that! But I did just by RIP tickets for Download 2015!
@Liam yes we do. Or maybe that's just Scotland
13:58
@RoryAlsop We do but I think they're different?
They're just sixth form in another building. I think american one's are different. I'm not sure...
@soph-e I'm old enough to remember these first time around!
Here they are the same as universities
@RoryAlsop Here they're just for the kids that aren't clever enough to get into 6th form!
:)
@Liam hahaha
Code smells...for the programmers in here
14:39
@soph-e Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood made this site!
yes, I know :)
Joel's company looks like a very interesting place
joel writes his blog in the style of a soapbox preacher, but there's something to be said about someone who wrote software-related articles 14 years ago that I still find very relevant today
then again, I don't have very much real-world experience in regards to software
14:56
They generally have very good opinions. But they are opinions. You'll find plenty of people who don't agree!
Useful little tutorial on tieing into a confidence rope
15:10
I'd never heard of a confidence rope before!
I think we just did figure 8 knots, although I can't remember
@soph-e That was what I was planning but this one's good. It's adjustable you see.
Confidence rope is a very thin rope for scrambling with, not climbing
Light but not really strong enough to take a fall
15:44
hey @nhinkle
morning @Liam
evening here! :)
Well 5pm
@nhinkle Where you based?
@Liam Oregon, USA
Cool
You're in the UK, right?
15:48
@nhinkle Yep, North Wales
Formally Liverpool until a couple of months ago
16:05
@liam I made a quick album with some of the photos from my trip, if you want to check it out! imgur.com/a/TCx3v
@soph-e Looks amazing!
Crevasses are death traps, literally!
You ever seen/read touching the void?
@Liam that sounds familiar
16:21
@nhinkle Its the guy that fell down a crevasse on the way up Everest and then dragged himself out and down to base camp. Unbelievable story. The people with him had presumed he was dead
Wasn't everest
was "Siula Grande in the Peruvian Ande"
Ah yes. I read the book some time back, haven't seen the movie.
@nhinkle The films quite good. It's more of a documentary. The two climbers kind of narrate it

1 hour later…
17:30
@liam yeah I watched Touching the Void maybe a week before leaving for Peru, after our teacher recommended it to us. woops :P
that movie is a little freaky

1 hour later…
19:41
@Liam just saw the movie and really liked it. His torture had to be massive, so nice he made it and unlike others he didn't criticize his buddy for cutting the rope. Joe Simpsons books are fun to read, just finished reading his book about the Eiger, which consists of lots of historical facts.
@soph-e great pics!
user116848
hi
user116848
I have watched the who documentary too :-)
user116848
Very well made.
user116848
But I watched it in the past thought. South American adventure iirc
user116848
19:57
Oh, my favorite was Vertical limit. It was a fiction though.
user116848
Plus some Chris Sharma's documentaries
user116848
I never do mountaineering though
user116848
later guys!
user116848
I guess no one is here
Hi @Arrowfar
user116848
20:01
Hey!
user116848
How are you?
Vertical limit? That's so unrealistic, when I watched it I can't stop laughing :D
user116848
lol. Why?
I'm fine, thx. Vacation for a week now. And you?
user116848
Very unreal you mean :-)
user116848
Yes it's a film after all. Real climbing is very tough
user116848
So have you made to any summits?
user116848
@EverythingRightPlace I am good. Thanks!
@Arrowfar Yes but not so extreme ones ;)
user116848
That's very cool of you
20:06
Really just started this year
But I am already addicted ;)
user116848
Yes it is a good sport :-)
Living quite close to the Alps is nnice
user116848
Oh, you do? That's nice
Don't know if I would call it sport, more of a life style I guess
user116848
ha-ha maybe
20:07
Where are you from?
user116848
Oh I am from Asia.
user116848
Pakistan
user116848
Totally!
user116848
You an old user?
user116848
20:09
This chat is usually dead.
not really old
maybe half a year
user116848
Nice. Not many user chat here I guess
This chat is just alive for some weeks I think
Before it really was dead
user116848
ha,ha Why is that?
Because Liam promoted it in meta and some guys like me followed
But when I have time in the evening most are already off
user116848
20:10
I see
Btw in Pakistan you have to climb some mountains too ;)
user116848
We have K2 in the northern areas lol
user116848
But that one is the toughest in the whole world :-)
user116848
You know many people have died climbing that mountain. Many documentaries on the subject too I guess :)
user116848
I like trekking more than climbing
user116848
20:13
It's safe and all
Yeah but you don't just have K2 :D
user116848
Yes Nanga Parbat etc
only experts should try it, that's for sure
user116848
Very True
If I've had the chance to be in Pakistan I would try to do a 6000m summit
And not the toughest of them all, you know
user116848
20:14
Oh, that sounds cool
I will do it some day
user116848
And in Nepal they have the Everest hehe
but not these days, enough to explore in the Alps ;)
user116848
They say Everest is safer than K2
It is
I don't like Everest
user116848
20:15
Yes I have seen the documentaries
Even with the money and experience
I wouldn't do it
user116848
@EverythingRightPlace Why ?
It's pure tourism
user116848
Yes it is
user116848
So you like challenge? :D
user116848
Ah, I see
And the spirit of the mountains
I think Everest lost it
But I've never been there so I just can tell from what I heard/read
user116848
With too many people climbing it you mean?
yes
all want to make money there
I think these days you pay 50k $
user116848
Yes they charge a lot there I have heard
20:18
And you aren't allowed to go without Sherpas
user116848
Yes that's very very expensive. Only for rich dudes lol
Or maybe they just will make this rule soon
You heard of the brawl at Everest?
user116848
No. You mean fighting and bickering?
user116848
Is this from recent?
user116848
20:20
I am taking a look
And Ueli Steck is just one awesome guy
In my humble opinion one of the greatest mountaineers these days
user116848
So in short what happened?
user116848
Did anyone got injured?
Sherpas feel offended
by Steck and Moro
back in Base Camp there were like 100 Sherpas
and they were going to attack them really badly
most likely they would kill them
but no serious injuries occured
user116848
Kill who? The tourists?
20:22
they threw stones and the two flew down
yes the European mountaineers
they are very experienced
but the Sherpas felt offended
user116848
That's ridiculous. Was there some money issues or just bickering?
The two were going up without Sherpas
I think that's the first "problem"
And the Sherpas were constructing fixed ropes
But Steck didn't use them
So I don't see the point
Just read it ;)
user116848
Yes I have heard about Sherpas fixing ropes on the all 4-6 points of Everest
yes they earn their money with this kind of jobs for tourists :P
But there are real mountaineers like Steck who just don't need those ropes and they don't want to use them
So why should this be forbidden?
They try to reach the summit by fair means
user116848
I see :-) That's very heroic of Steck
user116848
20:27
Oh so some lady saved the day (Melissa)
I guess the major issue is that the locals aren't getting most of the money the tourists are paying. Big expedition companies from all over the world are getting paid pretty good and Sherpas just get a bit
Yes
user116848
Yes I knew it was money relating. Because the Sherpas are very poor people usually I guess.
Not really, for their relations they are good paid
But related to the Western companies
user116848
But they should never have attacked the mountaineers.
They are just getting a starvation wage
user116848
20:30
That's crossing the line I guess
@Arrowfar That's a good point
I think the same
user116848
It seems like there is some dirty politics there on the Everest
user116848
I mean different companies etc.
yes
But that all being said I'm not at all planning to go there.
It's just the tallest mountain
user116848
Yes I see your point :-)
20:33
there are hundreds of other very nice and tall mountains
user116848
So have you visited the Andes like in the documentary? (Touching the void)
Not at all ;/
Just the Alps
user116848
I see :-)
More coming in the future hopefully :D
But hey, the Alps are really great. You visited them already?
user116848
Me? No :-)
user116848
20:34
But in the future may be
Write it on your bucket list ;)
user116848
Yes totally!
So what are you doing in Pakistan?
user116848
Me. I am studying accountancy here.
You like it?
user116848
20:38
It's okay. I mean it is only to get a good job etc. Not very appealing you know ;)
yeah I understand
Is it tough to get a good job where you live?
user116848
Not if I have a good qualification
user116848
I am doing UK certification ACCA
user116848
Have you heard about it?
user116848
20:40
I see. It's all accounting related :-)
So I'd better don't mess around with you when it comes to money :D
user116848
No that's not true :D
user116848
I have other interests too. I am usually in the ELU SE chat.
I see, your english is really good
user116848
Since Urdu is my native language I hang around English language SE chat most of the time
user116848
20:43
Thanks!
How many languages are there in Pakistan?
user116848
Are you native English speaker?
A colleague of mine is from Iran and I think they have lots of different languages
No I am not native English
user116848
In Pakistan there are 5 provincial languages. But Urdu is the national one :)
I am not the best English speaker at all
user116848
20:44
Your English is good too!
Thx but I have to google a lot :D
Well
not a lot but from time to time
It's good enough for the internet
But speaking in real life
user116848
Same here. I google a lot too about grammar and stuff
my English sucks :D
user116848
Nay it's good I'd say
user116848
It was nice talking to you! See ya! Bye.
20:48
Same
See ya
Going to watch Indiana Jones now :D
21:41
@everything what's your native language? :o

2 hours later…
