Morning All!
07:10
morning
07:21
morning
that's the school run done - unfortunately the last few days have been too overcast to get any useful shots of Edinburgh from here :-(
08:06
@Rory: Aww :-(
@Rory hopefully the weather picks up!
There is a night time shot of my hometown on our website at the moment. Phone quality lol
08:29
Morning all
Blew my car tyre up last night, no spare
Stupid modern cars
08:41
@Liam aww no good
09:37
@Liam pants - how'd that happen?
and how come no spare? Is it a run flat?
@RoryAlsop Clipped a ditch on a country road, stupid 4x4 taking up all the road
the holes about 2" long
Stupid car didn't come with a spare, just a jug of glue and a pump
no use on a 2" gash!
I think i'll be trawling the scrap yards looking for a spare this weekend so this doesn't happen again
09:56
@Rory: Such a colorful pic! "D
@WedaPashi lol.
@Rory @liam @Ara: I have dared ask this.

Q: Is it safe to sleep for more than 16 hrs a day at altitudes above 6000m?

WedaPashiI am planning for a trek at the Advance Base Camp of Saser Kangri. The region is so deserted of people and expeditionists/mountaineers that there are usually two to three odd tents at the Base Camp of the mountain, and its a known fact that once you are beyond the Base Camp, yours is the only tea...

Likely to be a question which may not be received neatly by most of the ppl around
@WedaPashi I see nothing wrong with the question
3
@Rory: Thanks :-)
On any exploration/trek/camp sometimes you just need to hunker down. My father told me of having to stay in a tent for 2 weeks high on the Beardmore Glacier. He was bored, and concerned about supplies, but it does give your body a chance to rest

I thought some geek would come and say, "don't go, if you can't go up, bloody climb down and start again". And seriously I had had a friend from Nepal who did that :O "Just the weather being nuts, I can't climb up, so I'll go down, grab a beer, have a giggle with ppl down there and come up when things are good, You can take care of my tent and backpack in here :D" I was Amazed!
@WedaPashi some might - I'd suggest ignoring them, as downtime is sometimes enforced upon you
2
@Rory downtime can be essential anyway. You need reat days between any strenuous activity :)
@Rory @ara: But is it safe to sleep? :D (I know I am being Lazy)
@Weda if it's ok to exert yourself by climbing how is it unsafe to rest?
@WedaPashi If you are on your own, you should take certain precautions - eg if snow is heavy, an alarm set every hour so you can check you aren't getting buried or having your oxygen cut off is a good idea
2
but as @Aravona says - it's not a risk over what you have been doing
10:23
@Liam btw a picture taken at night on my z1 is now up on my blog :)
@Rory @Weda I'd add an answer but Rory may as well add to his answer that you should be ok to sleep at that altitude... So long as you are not going up solo your risks would be minimalised.
@Aravona will do
@Rory :)
I haven't had a question or a good answer in forever, brain just won't think.
@Aravona I've forgotten the URL again...
@Liam goliveoutdoors.com
2
(it's in @Aravona's profile)
@Liam @Rory lol!
I'm off work next week so should be a busy period :)
11:30
@Ara: This might well be a solo thing :-) And, I am damn excited about it being so!
@Weda as I've told you before I never solo but that does look awesome :)
have you confirmed being in England yet?
11:49
and the winner is............................

A: Our chat room name

WedaPashiI'll suggest The Base Camp :D

room topic changed to The Base Camp: I've got some small nuts that will only hold 8Kn [flapping-mice] [football-rants] [hair] [je-mappelle] [queen-of-tgo] [rory-equals-geek]
Base camp makes more sense....or else this is a fire, which is a bit weird...
@Liam lol - and base camp is well understood by all outdoors folks, whether or not they are real mountaineers (which I definitely am not)

@Liam @Rory @Weda nice! :)
12:16
@Liam: Thanks :-)
12:35
so my company has just been bought by the emirates group....
erm....
not sure what to make of that
Might be time to polish my CV up
@liam: Oh, thats bad.. Good luck with that!
@Liam I'm sure it'll be fine...!
* @Rory equals geek* .. seems like I have missed some fun in last couple of days. Time to scroll up and see :-)
@Weda do you know if you'll be in England or not yet?
@Ara: Its a 70-30 matter. 70% says I am gonna fly :-)
12:47
@Weda cool :)
13:04
@Liam you beat me by ten seconds...
@BenediktBauer I think yours was right though!
@BenediktBauer I'm getting "freeing" and "Free climbing" mixed up
apparently ;-)
@BenediktBauer Aid climbing isn't exactly something I have a lot of experience of
:)
I was already struggling with giving you a -1
though it does mean the world is denied my:
No, falling == death == not a successful accent
13:08
me neither, but in my eraly climbing days I have read a lot about the beginnings of free climbing...
@BenediktBauer I've read a bit of andy Kirkpatrick
@Liam That's of course very very sad
That's his thing
room topic changed to The Base Camp: falling == death == not a successful accent [flapping-mice] [football-rants] [hair] [je-mappelle] [queen-of-tgo] [rory-equals-geek]
Not anymore
:)
Should I protect this question?

Q: Can you boil an egg in dirty water?

sweeneyrodI'm going on a one day hike, and I want to cook an egg whilst on it. I'd like to avoid carrying excess water, and the route goes past a couple of waterfalls and several streams, so there is no problem in acquiring extra water. However, I don't know whether there would be risks from bacteria in th...

Seems to be getting into the realms of argument
@RoryAlsop?
Advise meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

1 hour later…
14:22
@Liam I'm fairly new to the site, but I'd protect it... The recently made comments add nothing to the question or answer and confuse more than clarify.
@barghest Yeah sod it
It's a new power that I have yet to wield too
Well, as they say - With great power... ;-)
But I think in this case it is justified.
@barghest comes an increased sense of self importance?
@Liam That's one way to put it, yeah... That doesn't have to be a bad thing though.
@Liam yes, that as well...
14:52
@Liam Do you really not know what "redpoint" means or are you just pushing the question rate up ;-)
15:40
@BenediktBauer A little of both! :)
Hope you had a look at the wikipedia links meanwhile ;-)
@WedaPashi Bolt cutting isn't something that anyone should do. It's actually illegal in the UK
@BenediktBauer Yes, which actually made me ask the question as they were a little unclear. I actually thought repoint meant a something else too

3 hours later…
19:11
@Liam I read that...
