Morning all
Morning :)
Morning Everyone!
07:23
How's everyone doing?
@Ara; I am doing good. Finally have a spare time to trek virtually :-)
Revising the trekking routes on wikimapia :-)
@Weda that sounds really interesting... I'm entertaining myself on twitter whilst working :)
@Ara: Ohk. Twitter is blocked out systems, and I hate using my cellphone
@Weda awww... nothing is blocked here but I use my mobile anyway :) less distractive for other people
@ara: Thats true
07:39
@Weda so what's wikimapia?
08:06
@ara: Its a site, similar to google maps
@Ara: I prefer wikimpia over Google Maps
mornig
morning (try that again)
@liam: Morning!
@Liam howdy!
@Weda ahh I prefer to use neither! :)
I've a bunch of OS maps
@Aravona Have you seen this
What bing maps?
Yeah know of those too
08:10
@Aravona that you can get Os maps though bing maps?
@Liam all that loaded for me was bing maps.
Not on a PC remember.
@Liam I have the OS mapfinder and OS Locate apps :)
Plus I've the geocaching app which brought a Google maps licence then made it more use friendly lol
08:24
@Ara: OS maps? whats that?
@WedaPashi Ordanance survey @WedaPashi
@WedaPashi You'll be wanting to get to know them if youir walking in the UK
@Liam: Ohk. Got it!
@Liam: I'll get acquainted with them with your and @Ara 's help :-)
@Weda yeah they are useful... pricey but useful... we have loads of them piled up :)
@Ara; Ok. May be sometime next month I will have few of them with me :-) I'll see for the purchase details
@Weda they have an app - and almost every outdoor store here will stock them :)
08:31
@Ara: Oh, thats great. But first I'll ave to check if the app has a release for Nokia X devices
@Liam: India won yesterday :-) For a change! I wanted to see Ian Bell batting :-(
@Weda awesome, I only saw the start of Englands batting.
@Weda I'm on Andriod so, it should be on all android.
@Ara: Nokia X androids are different :-( MyTracks doesn't work with me if I don't root my cellphone
@Weda that sucks. I think I might go Sony next time... will sync with my ps4 and camera then.
08:48
@Ara: I am gonna go for a Ubuntu made next time
@Weda really? For a phone?
@Ara: yeah
Check this out: ubuntu.com/phone
@Aravona I've got a Z1 it's aces
@Liam Z1 is android no?
@Aravona Yeah
08:59
Runs on jellybean or kitkat?
@Liam I was looking at getting a sony when my contract is up on my S3 as they have water resistant phones, but my s3 has been amazing in general but the batteries on them are awful
@Aravona 4.4.4 Kitkat
@Aravona Mines water resistant. I've had it in the bath and everything
Though I then sat on it and broke the seal slightly so don't trust it anymore
@Liam: Sat? :O :D rofl
@WedaPashi I had it in my back pocket and sat in my car seat. It kinda bent the whole case a little. Nothing broke though
tough phone
@Liam that sucks. I face planted with my s3 in had... no screen damage all, was impressed.
@Aravona It's pretty much fine, just a bit more banana shapped than it used to be
09:05
I am glad that I am a bit more careful with my cellphone @liam @ara :)
So I'm out of questions for the time being...
@Weda mine has a 2 year warranty so... s' all good!
@Lima I haven't had a question in ages... nore an answer :/
@liam: Me too!
@Liam @Ara: I am going to be off the grid for a couple months or so after a couple of weeks :-( Off the grid is like, Veryy limited internet access
found a toad last night
@liam: Who's that with the Prince Toad? :D
09:20
@WedaPashi That's my girlfriend steph. I dragged her out in her PJs to see it
@Liam awww we had frogs in our kayaks :) posted about it on our website
@Weda does this off the grid thing involve coming to England?
@Ara: Nah, not entirely. I'll be in England most probably by Sept last week. Will be in Kent, there for a week, then to London at my cousin's place for a couple of days. And then I'll be going to Hawaii for a week. After that total isolation: I am on a leave for a month from roughly Mid-Oct to mid-November. Preparing for exams :-)
@Ara: When I am in Kent, we can plan for a coffee depending upon your schedule :-)
@liam: Whats PJ's? Sorry for being dumb! :D
@Weda lol would be good if I drank it...! And hawaii sounds amazing! I hope you enjoy yourself :)
@Weda Pjs is short for pyjamas
@Ara: I ain't going for a trip :-) I am on official work. Gotta run some tests with stupid sensors..
@Weda currently nothing planned for end of Seot beginning of Oct :)
09:31
@ara: How about your guy and amazing @liam joining us?
@liam: Is Kent too far for you? Or the place where @Ara is?
@Weda if my company sent me off on a jolly to Hawaii I would not complain! (Jolly is short for joliday which is job+holiday lol... random term from my workplace)
@Weda @Liam I'm Bucks.
@WedaPashi Yeah kents a bit out the way for me! It's about 200 miles away
:)
@Aravona Bit nearer only 175 miles!
@Liam: What would you prefer if we plan something?
@Liam yeah it is a bit of a trek ;)
@Ara: Love the Jolly term :D
09:48
I could make it to the North West?
I'd happily take you into Snowdonia
@Liam lol... it would always be hard to sort a meetup!
@Liam: Take me to Snowdonia? Don't complain if I am too slow :D
10:04
Today is the best day of the month.... Payday!!
@Ara: Good. I'll get mine by tomorrow! I am longing to have my bike fixed :-)
@Wwda mine is allll house deposit at the moment.
@Weda * damn phone keypad lol
@Ara; Ok. Good :-)
10:26
Much easier to plan trips and treks etc when not living with your in-laws to be.
@Aravona the price you pay for living down south
The rest of the country is pretty much bemused by the apparent housing crisis. I can buy a 2 bedroom semi by me for £130K
and we have frogs and bats... :)
@Liam we almost moved to Conwy when we ran our own business.
Two bed house for 100k.
The same down here is 200-250k.
@Aravona Conway's lovely too
Or do you mean the county?
why I live is very good. It's actually quite neglected (not trendy or posh, yet) but it's in beautiful countryside and has really good road links to Chester/Liverpool/Manchester.
@Liam just outside of Conwy the town :) we decided to stay nearer family though... my grandparents are all down here, and I've like to stay near them while I can :) plus my niece, sister and dad :)
But yeah we are hoping to get a place in the next 6 months if we can secure a mortgage.
We could rent easily... but don't want to
@WedaPashi I have a OnePlusOne - looks pretty awesome. Runs Cyanogen natively
@Aravona I currently run an S4, and before that an S3 - battery life on both was dramatically improved with Cyanogen, and JuiceDefender. I could get 24 hours on the S3 and 29 on the S4. But for Ingress I always carry a 12000mAh external battery pack in my pocket.
The 1+1 is supposed to be able to give me >2 days.
will see how that goes
(I only just got it)
10:50
@RoryAlsop @Aravona my sony comes with STAMINA mode pre-installed. It works pretty well. I'll get 36 hours easily off a full charge
Dependant on usage, obvs
@Liam @Rory my first battery blew ... this is a cheap replacement. But even so on old and new batter I get about 12 hours max if I'm using it. Mostly I use it a LOT. It was 100% this morning by about 10:30 it was on 41% so now it's charging again. Second year, no smartphone is decent in its aecond year. Battery is better since I factory reset.
But no, the battery on the s3 is terrible and there are millions of threads online of people with issues.
My s3 went back to a warranty repair shop and they didn't have a problem with my battery quality. So... yeah, it's annoying but I'm only a month away from a new phone.
@Aravona How odd - my S3 is a few years old now and battery life is still near 20 hours. I thought I'd need to buy another one but no problems with it.
11:08
@Rory in the last 4 hours my screen has used 26% of the battery... my games have uaed like 35%.... it just drops fast, more so when I'm not busy or bored
I'm happy to just keep charging it when I'm at work.l, new phone due soon anyway :)
I'm getting*
@Ara: Keeping it charging all the time kills the battery chemistry :-)
So be sure that you plug in for charging when you really need to. I'll say the need to situation is like you have 20% remaining?
@Weda I know but at this point I don't care, I can get a new phone in 7 days lol.
Usually I only charge it overnight but I charge and use it currently because I'm dure a new one soon that WONT have a cheap knock off chinese battery in it.
But like I said even doing this the warranty center said the battery (cheap chinese one) quality was fine lol
Anyway, I'm starving... going to go see about some lunch!

1 hour later…
13:03
@Liam wow - I'm astonished at the comments against the idea
@RoryAlsop You know what I didn't read the comments
Thats pretty shocking
@Liam ... that's a little demeaning. Why solo pick women? I gained a Distinction, top of my class FD in conputing after self teaching web development aged 11. Lol, would be better to mentor anyone who wants it.
@Aravona I think the point is to encourage women into the industry. I (not being a women) think this is a great idea. Women are badly underepresented in computing
The comments are back and forth, but I don't see women as being scared off from programming. One of my coworkers, our companies senior architect is a badass and she is awesome :)
@Liam not down south they aren't!
@Aravona I have NEVER worked with a female programmer, EVER. I've worked in half a dozen companies all over the north west (Liverpool, Warrington, Manchester and now north wales).
2
@Aravona I've never even met one! I went to a conference in London a couple of months ago
13:15
@Liam I am not against mentoring in general, I'm actually an IT tutor as well as a php seveloper
I'm also a sh*tty typer :)
There were maybe a dozen sourrounded by a couple of hundred men
No women speakers
It's a pity
@Liam Hi Liam, I'm a female programmer :P
@Aravona Well I've never met you! :)
@Liam Haha @Weda is trying to change that!
@Aravona so enthusiastic!
13:17
You'd not be the first person I've met up with from the web :)
@Aravona Must refrain from inappropriate response...
:D
@Liam I think the encouragement for females in male dominated professions should start at school, which mine lacked... I did barely any IT... I learnt most of what I know about PCs from having a mostly broken PC lol
@Aravona Do girls like the subjects though? Been a long time since I was in school TBF
@Liam make it ;) love an inappropriate response!!
PCs didn't even exist in schools when I was there TBF
@Aravona Kinky...?!
13:21
@Liam from my experience? Not usually.
@Ara: LOLzz
@Liam LOL
@liam: Well, even I have never worked with a female programmer..
Anyway if women are interested they will learn and jump into the field... and will probably find a job easier for being a woman lol.
But, no offense @ara, I wouldn't mind having a cup o' coffee with one, or even trek!
13:23
@Weda India has a massive IT base though? Male dominated there too?
@Weda nothing of that statement was offensive :)
@Ara: No male dominance as such. But usually we have more guys in Development and more women in Testing.
My profile is more of a Lone Ranger kinda thing :D
I am an embedded Firmware developer, and its not IT :-)
@ara @WedaPashi We have female testers too...It's odd if you think about it?
@liam: I wouldn't say odd. Rather I have seen many who migrated into Testing and Validation jobs from Development. But Yeah, I am short on experience too. I have been working for mere 1 and half year :-) There is a lot to see and learn
@Aravona we are working on a wide web of identification over on Security. Many of us are only 3 links apart
Here come the big boy! @Rory! :-)
13:32
@WedaPashi hahahahaha :-)
My senior partner at EY was female, as was my director there and at PwC, but IT and information security has very low numbers of women. Relatively high in social engineering, but low elsewhere.
I do mentor 2 women currently (1 in Risk and 1 in Security) but that is more down to specific career development requests
@Rory that's great :)
Still like I said to Liam a lof of women just don't see IT as a job role and if they want to get into it they will regardless, it isn't like they are scorned for it in the UK.
@Weda sorry IT is blanket term really... just a way to basically cover all sorts of development, hardware, etc roles lol
At school we used to call it ICT, which just seems dumb now.
@Aravona I think my kid's school still calls it that.
Back in my day it wasn't a thing
I ran the school computers, but there were no classes in it
no computer studies or IT
There was typing, but it was on typewriters
@Rory I barely used a PC in school until I was in secondary school. My primary school had one for all years... my dad had work laptops though and I learnt on that. When I was 11 I started developing my Neopets account page with HTML 4 and I haven't stopped since. Now I'm a mixed front end back end web developer mostly using PHP HTML CSS and JS but I can code in VB and C++ as well just haven't for years.
@RoryAlsop @Aravona Acorn A3000s for me, In my 6th form years we had PCs.
the occasional BBC model B
@Liam the first PC I used was my dads laptop... no unsimilar from Chandlers in Friends lol
13:47
YES!
@Aravona I hate friends...
It's not funny
:/
The first PC my dad got me for myself was an IBM business rig. Then I got a new Dell rig for college... now I brought myself another Dell and suped it up a bit with more ram, new gcard, better psu :) ... I went Dell because I needed a new monitor lol!
@Liam I remember when html first came out, and I can still write html (in notepad) but I had a weird route through computers. ZX80 and 81, Acorns, BBC, the Dragon 32, Oric Atmos, Jupiter Ace, Osborne 1, then up through various things running Xenix, via Sun and SGI through to now most of my home machines being Unix or Linux servers
@Liam why do you say that?
I had to get rid of my big machines though, when we started having kids. An RS6000 and two SGI Personal Iris's take up a lot of space
@Rory ... psh kids just make you get rid of all the best things ;)
13:50
@Aravona I just appear to be the only person in the world that finds it irratating. I didn't like it first time round I don't like it now. It's too american I think...
The home PCs number is up. 5 years no one will have one
@Liam it's much less american than most mordrrn sitcoms though. I grew up watching it so maybe thats the difference.
@Aravona Kids today, when I was young
,etc.
@Liam not for gamers.
@Liam no. Friends was incredibly irritating. Like all american soaps
Between things like Steam, Origin, Humble Bundle etc... PC has made a comeback. Though I no longer MMO but if I did I'd get an epic rig...
13:52
possibly except the Big Bang Theory
@Aravona Trends already vastly towards mobile. More mobile games sold than console and that's been heading that way for a number of years
@Liam I am only 25 gimme a break lol.
@Liam I'm not sure why you say that. My upgrade/refresh cycle goes out well beyond that, as there is not anything to challenge it
consoles are incredibly limited in terms of graphics, power, controls etc
mobile just sucks
@Liam PC != Console. Blasphemer
At least my gaming machine is continually upgraded, as are my main VM hosts
13:53
@RoryAlsop I barely too my PC these days. Just don't have to. I've got an iPad and 2 phones and my TV goes online. Everything is a pc now.
I am 24!
@Liam Ahh - I'm obviously too old. I can't stand the iPad, and while I have many android devices, I wouldn't use any of them for work or gaming.
2
(except Ingress, obviously)
@Liam @Rory Mobile games are cheesy little time wasters. The next gen consoles are good, I've a PS4, but the games are pricey... PC gaming has grown because some companies have released old versions of their games... eg, Age of Empires... with just a new set textures and the ability to run on win 7 / 8 ... its ingenious... plus. Humble bundle and steam make PC gamig cheap.
@rory I'm not sure that has to do with age, I also can't stand tablets/touchscreens for anything remotely complex. I need dat responsiveness that only a powerhouse of a PC can offer!
@Aravona well, I do have most of the consoles so far - but would never buy one - I always end up winning them or getting given them. Don't have a PS4 yet
13:57
Last time I paid $6 on a humble bundle I got over $400 worth of games and sent most of the money to charity :)
@soph-e yup
And I like a mouse and keyboard. Proper keyboard. My main server has an old IBM PS/2 keyboard, and my gaming one has a lovely Logitech Gaming keyboard
I made the mistake of buying a cheap laptop...it crashes as soon as I have too many chrome tabs open >.>
And I plug in joysticks or steering wheel/pedals for games
@soph-e I'd get a tablet over a new laptop... butnever a tablet over a desktop.
4GB RAM no longer cuts it :(
13:57
@Aravona agreed
that, or I have some bloatware I didn\t notice
@Aravona Ahh - I'd always perfer a decent size laptop to a tablet. Ideally a 17" or bigger. But yeah, desktop wins
@Aravona can't run visual studio or eclipse on a tablet, can you? ;)
or whatever your development software of choice is
I'm 8GB ram... Dynadin is 16GB ram.... I do notice I load slower than him on Path of Exile but otherwise I don't have lag issues... I lived in Dial up though so... maybe I don't notice lag much lol
@Rory +1 to a proper mouse and keyboard.
@soph-e I would never develop on my laptop either though. It's HP lol...
I only ever develop on my desktop. At my old job they made me use a Mac to develop PHP on. I hated it.
haha fair enough. I need a machine to work on outside of the house, no way a tablet is going to cut it. Then again, eclipse works on a portable drive so it's not too bad...
14:01
My development software of choice is actually netbeans / dreamweaver.
yeah netbeans for php is goodstuff
I had to try and learn python on a mac for an internship, I hated every second of it. I couldn't find where anything was!
Luckily new work gave me a win 7 rig. I come to work 8 hours developing (and TGOing) go home and when I have time PC or PS4 games. PS4 is currently more convenient whilst I live with my future in laws lol
@Aravona It's all about the SSD for me
@Liam I still don't have SSD
I need a new Steam hard drive... I have a 250gb one but its full... thinking of getting a TB after we get a house lol...
@Aravona Makes a MASSIVE difference
@Aravona Especially if you boot off it
14:06
@Liam I probably won't get SSD until my next rig and my current one is only about 3 years old... not due another for at least 3 more.
@Aravona I spend all my money on ropes and waterproofs
....
@Liam we want the vango halo 200 and a house... recently brought kayaks... went to wales... going to Germany or Scotland this Dec...
Eats all the money.
@Aravona True Dat
@Liam though Edinburgh would be cheaper than Nuremburg
@Aravona well worth it. My main server boots faster than my car stereo now.
@Aravona And it is lovely, obviously. If you are here for Hogmanay, then you have an epic party to enjoy
14:19
@rory if your car stereo is anything like mine, that comparison is pretty meaningless ;)
@Rory no would be Edinburgh Christmas Market... hogmanay would be maybe next year.
stupid car takes 2 minutes before being able to play off the USB key >.>
But I don't enjoy new years so hoping Hogmanay would give me some happy memories :)
@soph-e nah - mine runs Debian, has (currently) 1/2 terabyte of storage (looking to go to 1tb soon) and talks over serial, ethernet, SP/DIF or wifi
oh, high tech stereo then :P
14:21
@Rory @soph-e I use CDs in my car or an aux cable to my phone.... bu then my phone dies so usually CDs lol
haha I sometimes drive an oldsmobile, it uses some cassette with an auxiliary cable that magically converts music from my phone into readable format for the cassette player
something about magnetism or somesuch, I like to call it dark magiks
I've gotten so used to having music on my phone, I can't stand CDs anymore :P
I need my 20+GB selection of music!
@soph-e I just use youtube on my phone.
I want to convince Dyna to do a Christmas GLO event
@ara well that ought to kill your battery life pretty quickly, unless you have an app that allows you to play youtube songs without the screen staying on
@soph-e of course. I'm a music geek :-) It plays mp3, flac, ogg, wav and wma (I think)
@rory that's some pretty sweet stuff!
14:29
it also plays pac man, has a lyrics scroller, can run distributed programs (like the dnetc RC5 cracking competition client)
very hackable
@rory your...car stereo...plays pacman?
well then :P
I should get one of those for my dad. He's definitely a huge music geek
@soph-e yep - and whackamole and a few others. The kids can play it from the back seat with the remote
@soph-e you werent here for the 'sod my s3 I'm getting a new phone next month' conversation lol
@ara haha nope. But I would hate to be stuck driving with only flimsy CDs for music ;)
@ara (I kid, I've made CDs for road trips before, it's actually pretty cool)
@rory I can't find any kind of price for the empeg, either they're really obscure or they really want to hide the prices!
14:41
@rory ohhh, it's been discontinued. nevermind that.
I have 3. One for each car and one for my home office
Support is still as good as it was 15 years ago, and it still has better sound rendering than any car stereo on the market
Hugo - the main designer - then went on to develop the iPhone audio hardware, and is the brains behind Electric Imp
@rory interesting. Sad that my dad might find it to be a little too much work for him though. In his old age, he prioritize ease of use over many other things
@soph-e In terms of getting music onto it, it is literally a case of install the app on PC, then drag and drop files
And for playback in the car, the UI lets you setup playlists etc without looking
very intuitive
not that I'm biased, but it is lovely
@Rory lol
@rory haha
14:50
I've just wasted 30 mins at work talking to a coworker about routes into work lol
.Net session state is f**king balls
15:24
Right home time... have a good one all !!
@Aravona See ya @Aravona
Stupid SO
1
Q: SessionState memory management

LiamWe're using an out-of-proc session state service/ASP.Net Session state. We know were having problems with this as it's been abused in the past, too much stored in session state too often, so were in the process of moving onto a more scalable system. In the meantime, though, we're trying to get o...

you're asking for an overview, and they want you ask about specific things you may be wondering about :/
but yeah, lame that it's put on hold so fast
