07:26
hi everyone!
08:02
@WedaPashi Mornign weda
Good little haul of questions over night,
Morning
@Liam I had to remove one, but aside from that, yes :-)
08:21
@RoryAlsop Yeah did see that
Shameless advertising!
@Liam Yeah - a bit cheeky. It would be nicer if they could approach this politely, have their spiel in their profile, and answer a couple of appropriate questions authoritatively
that would get them some interest
@RoryAlsop I suppose they just see it as a nice handy SEO farm
Se sites tend to get good google rankings on questions
@Liam yeah - quick and cheap
The moderation model works pretty well at chopping these off at the knees though so no harm done
By "moderation model" refer to @RoryAlsop....
08:25
@Liam pffft
Some of the design decision in my companies software are horrendous....
Some people should never be allowed near software...
@RoryAlsop LOL
@Liam All the mods are active - we all get stats on actions that the other mods take. All 4 of us have been active in the last 24 hours
@RoryAlsop Yeah, I'm only flattering you
think I'm just noisier about it :-)
your actually pretty shit
;)
08:27
lol - I certainly delete a lot of stuff...
and write a lot of comments - who knew
I would say that until recently some of the mods (namming no names) had not logged onto the site for sometime, let alone do any modding tasks. I think the longest period was a couple of months.... Mr.Wizard alerted me to it in a meta question.
Now that said others (@Kevin) have always been around and appeared to basically be doing all the work
08:51
Ok, I'll stop moaning about this now, but one last point. I dug out the meta question I was talking about. I checked the stats again and one of the mods hasn't visited the site since may! That's 3 months! So @RoryAlsop, you are the model for moderation.... (god that sounds f**king lame)
09:04
@Liam I missed a day over this weekend - Orkney has almost no connectivity outside Kirkwall - but generally I try to visit all the sites I moderate at least twice a day, and most of the other ones I am interested in I visit daily.
(moderation is usually not very time intensive - it's only when you get difficult customers, active spammers and strange behaviours that it gets tricky)
In other news, did I mention my band is going to be on Radio 4 tonight at 8pm...
2
:-)
Not playing, but we were invited as guests onto James Naughtie's referendum debate ... heh heh heh
@Kevin Yep - long term growth curve keeps on steepening. I keep trying to see whether the data lets us spot 'tipping points' as they happen, but it's usually after the fact that they become obvious
@RoryAlsop Awesome....I love radio 4....I'm such a geek
@Liam hmmm. All the mods have visited in the last day, and have moderation activity in the last week, so the stats you are seeing may not be complete
Not trying to apologise for anyone, but yeah - I like to be heavily involved
Others may take a lighter touch
@RoryAlsop He mods other (larger) sites. Could the moderation be happening there. Is it general moderation? Maybe I have the wrong end of the stick.
@Liam nope - each site has its own mod stats board. We even have a highlight on those stats which are outside the group norms, in order to help us keep an eye on bahaviours
@RoryAlsop Well maybe I'm wrong then. :)
09:18
So for the 4 of us I see today, Aug 9, Aug 8 and Aug 4
This is actually still a pretty quiet site for moderation tasks - one of my other beta sites has stacks of flags every day.
On security, there are a lot of cleanup tasks, but a good number of +10k folks who do 90% of it, so the mods just get the nastier stuff :-/
Here, as a quick example, we have only had 10 flags in the last week - so if a mod logs on and there are no flags, expected activity is a quick browse to check things look okay.
So this might mean that if Weda, Aravona and you flag something, I might see it before the US have a chance to. And right now, you 3 are pretty active :-)
@RoryAlsop Why does his profile page say not visited since may then? (feel a bit bad talking about someone without the chance for them to reply but I'm intrigued now)
Here's the meta question with the original discussion me and Mr.Wizard had
2
Q: Rename tag request: vibram-five-fingers

Mr.WizardI believe that the tag vibram-five-fingers should be renamed to vibram-fivefingers as FiveFingers is the official name of the product. Also, I recommend making fivefingers a synonym.

@Liam Okay - that is weird. I now know who you are referring to, and I can see two sets of stats. His profile page saying May, and the mod profile page saying August
I'm off to have a poke about
@Aravona ohhhh, nasty
@Liam I know right?
09:32
@Aravona Wonder what happened. Unusual for this to happen in the summer.
Ah - @Liam - I think I see it. Going to the moderators tab on Users from meta.outdoors is different to going to it from outdoors
Well unusual for so many
so on the meta version you see their activity on meta.outdoors
@RoryAlsop Ahhh! right, so yeah I was wrong :)
@Aravona oh no. That's not good!
@Liam I was just drafting up a query to the SE devs to ask about this - it baffled me until I accidentally closed a tab and had to go back in, and the numbers were different!
09:34
@RoryAlsop Our meta is not busy so it's understandable
@RoryAlsop @Liam yeah very strange... more to follow...
@Aravona The news about Climbers dead on Mont Blanc: Very nasty :(
09:56
My other half is cleaning my walking boots today.... rather him than me!
@Aravona hahahaha. Well trained.
@Aravona Can you get him to do mine too? My jacket could do with re-proofing too, thanks
:)
@Liam: LOL.. Thats being opportunist!
Haha @Liam @RoryAlsop ... not well trained more bored on his week off whilst I'm at work
Apparently mine were horrificly bad
Lol twitter is hard to understand but I am slowly gaining followers for our GoLiveOutdoors twitter.

1 hour later…
11:09
@Aravona I'm not very au fait with twitter, but you now have another follower and a wee retweet to my followers :-)
@RoryAlsop awesome! GoLiveOutdoors is just sort of a blog of our outdoors activities (with a side like to TGO on it ;) ...) but will see how it grows :)
I would have loved to share my blogs here. But I am afraid that they are in the language which is not understandable by you guys in here, and neither can google translate help. :(
Side link*
Aww WedaPashi which language...?
@WedaPashi oh wow.... multi lingual people always me so much... Being able to order beer in spanish I don't think counts
11:30
@Aravona I can order beer in about 6 languages including croatian....
Yedan Pivo (excuse the spelling). That's 2 btw, I can't remember what one is.
@Liam: Thats great!
Next time you want two beers in a croatian pub, I'm your man
@Liam Heh - I'm good with ordering beer and food, and asking for the bill. I can go a bit further than that in a couple of languages (Spanish was mandatory at school in the Falklands, and I worked in Germany for a year so I have reasonable technical German)
and conversational Bavarian... which may or may not be useful
@Liam: All I could try is: Kann ich ein Bier bitte?
And that too with the help of google translate :D ;)
zwei maß Biere, bitte :-)
11:34
But yeah, I have never had a Beer :D :P
@Liam I've a good friend in Puerto Rico who insists on improving my spanish... and my step dad is from Mauritius so you'd think my french would be better but mostly I can just insult the french in french...
11:47
@Aravona That is a skill not to be sniffed at
@WedaPashi ha ha ha
These
Are a bargain
12:13
Just reading about the route those climbers died on. It's a pretty serious route. Killed several people over the years, bad times
Are you suggesting the products?
@WedaPashi Not sure what you mean?
@Liam yeah apparently their guide is missing still...?
@Aravona Yeah, that's unusual. Unless he left them to try and get help
@Liam: Forget it. I am trolled by work here :D
Yeah, its very likely that the guide has left the team to get help
Was it the bad weather or the route is that tough? Sorry I couldn't get to read the whole news.
12:24
@WedaPashi Yeah I think the weather closed in. Apart from that, no ones sure
@Liam it seems all a bit mysterious
@Aravona It's pretty common. They'll be about 12,000 feet up and will be concentrating on looking for the guide. Most likely they've been caught in an avalanche or the weathers closed in so badly and so quickly that they've been caught out in the open and unable to make camp, but this time of year I'd be surprised if that's the problem
That peaks basically one massive snow gully so any avalanche is going to wipe everyone out.
@Liam: Does make sense
@Liam, @aravona: On a side note: If I don't make it to the Trans-Pennine trail the next year, I may plan for this one: indmount.org/articledetail.aspx?Aid=94
Came across this before
Thought it might be interesting to you @WedaPashi?
12:41
@Liam: Sounds damn awesome! But, I can't plan big stuff this year. :(
13:15
@Liam @WedaPashi My big plan this year is Snowdon... but my friend got me wanting to do Coast to Coast

Q: What are good items to leave in a geocache?

AravonaI started geocaching roughly a month ago and it's really fun activity to get into. I had a few questions (though one was answered already here > What should be carried in a standard Geocaching bag?) but my main question is typically for the UK due to people nature here, though all ideas are welc...

13:44
@Liam out of my 9 questions 4 are over 1k
@Aravona ohhh look at you "my 9 questions are over 1K"...
ha ha only joking
:)
:P
14:14
Lol @Liam well only 4 are.... if all 9 were I would clearly be the queen of TGO
room topic changed to The Great Outdoors: Sod Mondays [banana-measurements] [euphemism] [queen-of-tgo] [the-mongolian-walk-guy] [www-goliveoutdoors-com] [www-metaltech-me]
14:30
Haha!!
14:52
@Liam nice!
15:23
