Hello Everyone!
04:50
Hi @Kevin

1 hour later…
06:04
And, being in Asia, I will only have activity here in the second half of the work hours! A plus point I'll say :D
06:51
Morning all
07:04
We're at a whopping 2.7 for questions now, brilliant. Answer ratio hovering at 2.4 though.
2
07:44
wow, thats a nice rise.
good morning everybody
07:54
@WedaPashi I think a collection of pro´s and con´s would be valuable for everyone. Thats why I also voted to reopen. I think its better a question than a chat discussion, at least in the more general and neutral form its now.
08:05
It's gone up considerably in the last couple of weeks
Anybody see this question

Q: How can I take duct tape with me backpacking?

User1996I'm going on a backpacking trip later this summer and on the list of things to bring is 3 yards of duct tape. I don't want to bring an entire roll of duct tape because it would be heavy and cumbersome, as well as far too much tape. How can I bring 3 yards of duct tape without it getting stuck to...

It's recieved 1227 hits in about a day for some reason
I think SE tweeted it
I'm tempted to ask a Meta SE question to find out what the policy on this is, where this question, etc.
could help us grow our user base if we understood it
Does SE tweet at random?
(typical programmer, must understand everything)
@Aravona I have no idea
why this question not where
it also got a huge amount of answers. with a nice amount of repeating things. more than half of them is "wrap it around XXX". But this way at least you have something to choose from when voting

Q: Why has this question been tweeted?

LiamOne of our questions on The Great Outdoors seems to of had a massive(in our terms it's massive in a 24 hour period) surge of hits and has been tweeted by the SE account How can I take duct tape with me backpacking? I'm not complaining (we're all trying to grow our little community right now so...

08:20
It was good that question got a good amount of answers, variants on the same process is never bad either
One thing about the tweeting... when I look through the edita of some posts... including mine... there rabdomly shows up they were tweeted. That's probably why my dog camping question had 1500 hits
Edits*
Yep, totally agree. I'm just a little confused as to why this question
Randomly...* bloody phone keypad is tiny
So it appears to be based on it reciving a number of hits in a short period of time

Q: How does the twitter bot work?

Jeffrey LinI heard that there was a twitter bot which automatically posted questions and asked for questions for specific questions on every site. How do they work? Is there an algorithm for doing this or is it purely random? I know that it doesn't tweet closed questions, but that's it.

and it's a BOT so there is no human interaction
08:35
Oh interesting
the weather looks ace this weekend
I'm moving house so I can't go out
:(
I´m going for a hike with my sister
her first one :)
hope she will like it
Where you going? Anywhere nice
I'm meant to be pitching the tent and kayaking this weekend... but its going to be rain and thunderstorms
Never had the unfortunate issue of pitching in the rain... any advice?
08:50
@Aravona Do it quickly :D
If your tent has a detachable top sheet with it's own poles do this first then put the innner into it
that way you keep the inside dry
If your tent is a bit old school and the inside has the poles and the top sheet attaches to these....do it quickly
:)
Maybe you should ask a question?
I might do actually :)
I´m going to a nearby low mountain range, nothing special. Solling is its name.
@PaulPaulsen Ah solling...The Solling is a range of hills up to 527.8 m above sea level high in the Weser Uplands in the German state of Lower Saxony, whose extreme southerly foothills extend into Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.
;)
exactly, this one. Never been there, but I hope its worth it.
09:06
@PaulPaulsen I like that kind of walk. The popular places aren't always the best
Something to be said about getting away from the crowds
Yeah, thats true. At this place sure it will be crowdy along the river, the Weser, with cyclists, but probably not too many hikers.
Hmm struggling with wording a suitable title.
Which is a good thing since we´re going to do some not strictly legal camping ;)
@PaulPaulsen Love a bit of not strickly legal camping
@Aravona Pitching a tent in the rain?
@PaulPaulsen I think these laws are generally in place to stop people abusing the situation. Providing your considerate it's fine. It's illegal to stop 30 people with a stereo turning up building a bonfire and getting drunk
Oh yeah... duh... I'm lost in a world of T-SQL as an MySQL user... brain is not working
09:14
Yeah, I am pretty relaxed about it. When I was younger we did it with my scout group all the time. However, getting a little older it kind of gives some tension at times ;)
We are so close to 3 questions a day
@Aravona Whoop whoop
@Liam will be pleased when answer ratio gets to an Excellent as well!!
09:35
@Aravona I like the tent one. Due to living in Scotland, I have had to pitch (and strike) tents in the rain a lot. I don't know of a 'best' way, but I'll pop up an answer later with things I have learned from doing it.
@RoryAlsop that sounds brilliant thank you... and thanks @Liam as well I didn't know that was the reasoning for the tent structure change either!
So, I am off for lunch. See you later!
09:51
Lucky... lunch is ages away fir me :(
@Aravona time for elevenses :-)
@RoryAlsop ... can of coke... cricket is up in a tab to read... I have a scone for lunch... reading project spec documents... it's all good
10:08
@Aravona Has cook actually manged to score any runs this time?
@Liam we are bowling first.. won the toss
Wicket ... 11-1
10:36
@Aravona Yeah, I could of checked that, but where's the fun
@Liam lol true... atm anything is a good distraction from this massive document I'm reading
@Aravona Our thrid party software provider is writing sh*t code again...distractions may stop me from killing someone
@Liam Was it me? My code is usually shit lol! I'm working on someone elses home made mvc and it is a pain. I do not do T-SQL and I am stuck fixing it... it's been about two weeks since I started
@Aravona MVC's my thing. I'm a C# developer. I doubt it's you code unless your based in romania?
@Liam haha nope... and I'm PHP myself :)
11:01
Ok so the pitching in the wet is going down very well! Better than my last question :) fab
11:18
Hi folks!
@PaulPaulsen Thanks mate. Much appreciated..
11:30
@Liam @Aravona : I didn't know if we had cricket fans over here.. Cheers! I am on india's side!
I'm English so go England... but @WedaPashi if India play a better Test then they would deserve a win!
Shame that there is a bit of tit for tat arguing going on outside the pitch :( very silly all round but hopefully won't affect the Test atmosphere!
@Aravona: referring to yesterday's chats: Thats my pet. She is sleepy beauty!
@Aravona: I always say: Lets the best team win! Anyways I am a huge fan of Ian Bell, and also school-mate of Ajinkya Rahane :D
@WedaPashi ... she is a beauty!
@Aravona: And She says "Thanks" :)
@WedaPashi She is welcome! ;) back after lunch!
11:41
@Aravona I'm welsh...It's the english AND WELSH cricket board..?!:P
@Aravona Boycott was talking about this, this am. Saying how it's all got out of hand
@Liam: Ahh, you are from Wales. Great! May be fan of Ryan Giggs, living in Liverpool!
@Liam: I am huge fan of Liverpool. Wanna certainly watch a game at the Anfield.
@Liam very true ;)
I have to admit: While it was sometimes a little sad to see that little activity on the site, it was also quite convenient. After 2-3 days offline you could easily check what had happened. Now it´s a lot more stressful to stay updated.
@PaulPaulsen: Changes are myriad!
11:59
@WedaPashi I am an Evertonian I'm afraid Weda
@PaulPaulsen ha ha
@Liam: Aww.. Never mind..
@Liam I'm Scottish...but I am a member of our local cricket club (mainly because it is just over 40 metres from my front door, and has exceedingly cheap bar prices)
but I'm more a fan of sports that involve sails or engines, than anything involving kicking or hitting a ball
@RoryAlsop: Motorsports did you mean?
@WedaPashi Yep. Rallying, karting, racing anything on a track; or anything in the sea. Or even on snow, to be honest
@RoryAlsop I am officially the worlds worst footballer
Like it's embarrassing to watch :D
12:03
@Liam heh. I actually enjoy playing 5 a side, but I don't enjoy watching other people playing football at all.
@WedaPashi in regards to tge dark / light clothing thing my knowledge is mostly experience a d my PLE
In fact, in my family, only my middle daughter likes football - and she is very passionate about watching and playing it
I used to have a season ticket at goodison, but it took up too much of my time
and got more expensive every year
@Aravona: Okay. I have never seen a case of PLE. Upvoted your comment there.
@RoryAlsop: Obviously, Most of the people would love playing than watching, apart from Wrestling and Boxing.
Off to a meeting.. Catch you later!
@WedaPashi it effects 10-15% of people... I will post a link later
12:10
@Aravona: I'll be glad.
I don´t like watching sports that much. Had a great time during the football worldcup where everything in germany was about football... Hate times like this.
whats PLE?
@PaulPaulsen it's an immune reaction to the sun. I get a rash mostly on my hands / arms and sometimes thighs if I'm in shorts, where my body has had an immune response to the sun (I get it where it looks like: nhs.uk/conditions/erythema-multiforme/Pages/Introduction.aspx) it's disappears for me quite quickly but can alst 2-3 days if I'm exposed to UV a lot...
For the cricket fans we are 73-2
@Aravona Ah thanks. My mum has this in a light form.
@PaulPaulsen oh really? Very interesting. They assumed I had prickly heat but I have no issue with sweating which is a common issue with PH. Talked to a nurse about PLE and she said I had that... it's common in women apparently
12:27
@Aravona Is it this weekend your doing your walk?
12:42
@Liam nope, 16th August. This weekend is our prep the tents weekend (basically the only time we are all free to do it)
12:54
@Aravona You have a tent where your car fits in? With how many people do you use it?
@PaulPaulsen two! But it's for car camping... one week in one location... I am suprised no one googled the tent lol
This time there will be four people. It's a four man tent. But it's tall enough to stand up in with space.
Good mixed advice. Consodering UK campsites are basically bare fields (especailly down south) it's a shame we can't use the tarp option.
impressive.
We like it. Makes car camping very easy. We want a Vango Halo 300 as well and that is tiny in comparison. Lightweight too
87-3 on the cricket
Is it normal in cricket that the results are so high and differ that much?
@PaulPaulsen ha ha, thats one score! It's 87 runs for 3 wickets!
Remeber this is a game that takes 5 days to play
Thats only the first days score from india
england haven't even batted yet
13:09
Yes. The larger number is runs... the smaller is outs... so India has gained 87 runs and we have knocked three of their team out of play
A good test side will score 300 odd runs in an innings so thats 600 a match
Yup. Test cricket is brilliantly long compared to a Sunday match at a local club :)
@Aravona I quite like listening to the cricket while I work
It's so irrelevant
wow. seems like a lot of running.
thats something nice about a community that international - you learn a lot about all the things off-topic as well.
Is it called "test" because these are test matches before the actual cups and competitions?
Lol yeah @Liam I find defocusing a bit actually helps me work... I dont have a zone...
13:14
@PaulPaulsen No, teams play tests all year. A test is typically 5 matches over 5days for one test
so you'll only play a couple of tests a year
sometimes you'll go to (say aus) sometimes the match will be played here
The tournaments (world cup, etc.) are typically not test matches
they're one day (shorter) games
It's complicated
very british
Is it really so weird I have such a big tent btw...? I feel like it's odd now!
interesting, thanks.
lol np.
2.6 now on questions :(
@Aravona TBH, I think the fact that there are people on the site and using the chat room for the first time is very, very positive.
I remember being really excited when I noticed this SE
but I got disillusioned because it wasn't as busy as SO
But I still enjoy answering and asking questions
it's something I'm very passionate about
@Aravona You listening to Tes match special? I love blowfelt
13:26
Lol @Liam reading not listening... and yeah I just was so pleased to see 2.8 today lol I love this site and I use it the most out of all the SO sites. Is there a cap to SO Betas?
They've just had a discussion on one of the bowlers hair colour, is it ginger or blonde. That's the kind of thing that could only happen during a cricket match
What a spell Anderson has bowled so far! Sheer Class!!!
@Aravona: Thanks for the link
109 for 3!
Ok so one problem I'm going to face picking and answer for the pitch in the wet question is so far all the answers are good.... I will have to just pick one that matches my personal situation best...
@Aravona definitely not. I currently have a 12 man tent as my main family one, but also a 6 (which we use when guaranteed good weather, for one or two nights), and a 4 and a 2 (we use together - 2 kids in the small one, us + our youngest in the bigger one)
The 12 is good as it has a living room, kitchen, 2 sleeping wings, a porch and a garage area to park the car in :-)
so it works for car camping
@Aravona: The one by @Liam makes sense to me!
This answer by @Vorac really isn't bad either. Definitely deserves more upvotes. outdoors.stackexchange.com/a/4824/2303
13:43
@Aravona This is a pecularity of outdoors.SE I think. There are often several, very relevant answers all of which contribute
Not sure what the answer is
@RoryAlsop good to know! I love out big one... I've a habit of calling it Sandringham Hall... 'oh yes we are spending a week at Sandringham Hall...' no one knows its just a Eurohike Sandringham tent haha
Which one do you find most useful?
@Aravona ha ha, I did chuckle at the name a little
Wicket...
Doni didn't get the best reception coming on
To be honest they are all good... for different situations... I wouldn't be able to use a tarp... so in this case I would go for the most general advice.
We are down to 4
@RoryAlsop : A 12 man is too big to carry when you are not car camping
My girlfriends always complaining that my tent is too small. It's how I like to travel though.
13:51
@Aravona I don´t think you have to feel bad for a big tent.
@Liam: I too love to pack light
I never went car-camping (don´t have a car, don´t have a license) so I wouldn´t be able to use a tent this big.
@PaulPaulsen nope, Totally. It's preference
Also, I kind of like using very basic equipment.
In my scout group, of course we had really big tents, but the were for up to 30 or 40 persons and came in a lot of separable parts, so everyone could carry his bit.
I never went car-camping (don´t have a car, don´t have a license) so I wouldn´t be able to use a tent this
13:53
I think we would end up with several tent sizes for different occasions
Ahh, re-usability!
We did Eurocamp this year... they have are big tents.
I love this approach

A: Pitching a tent in the rain?

Kate GregoryThere are all kinds of people who put up the fly first, then crouch under it putting up the inside. It's generally a very unpleasant experience from all I have heard, what with the crouching, crawling, and being rained on at least while getting the fly up. I handle it completely differently, beca...

Just hang a tarp and pitch a hammock
lovely
115-4
@Liam good when not in a field ;) I wa impressed by that answer and the images provided
@WedaPashi My 6 man can fit in a rucksack along with food, clothes and first aid kit
14:00
@RoryAlsop: Yeah it should. But 12 is tough
@WedaPashi yup - it needs two people to carry it. Very light for its size, but for anything more than about 4 or 5 miles it isn't worth it
@RoryAlsop our 4 man is several KG lol... hence wanting a light weight 3 man
I once saw this awesome tent, I had total tent envy. It was like a big wigwam with a fire pit in the middle when the sun went down they all went inside opened this hole in the middle and lit a fire in the middle of the tent
:O
Oh wow...! Thats awesome @Liam
I think this is how traditional wig wams works.
14:13
we used yurts with the scouts, where we would also light fires and cook inside
Is wig wam the right word, or is that one of them made up John wayne film words
tipi?
It was one of these I think
@RoryAlsop: Absolutely agreed!
Anyone got £2000 spare...
123 - 5 ...
Aww Bad.. we are 5 down :(
14:16
@Aravona Missed that
@Aravona doni for one too
@WedaPashi it's due to rsin this weekend too
Jadeja getting booed too
These are the ones i was talking about: http://www.kohten.com/pics/kohten-jurten/grossjurtendach.jpg
And for hiking we would use smaller ones for about 4-7 persons, called "Kothe":
http://www.kohten.com/pics/554/kohte52.jpg?wb_8312_session_id=8a242fcbcdbe3e4980e50bf720dd6e48
@PaulPaulsen Cool
@Aravona Your question has been very popular
It's a good question
@Liam they are great, especially for groups, but quite heavy and are only water-repellent, not -proof
but when you´re young (or romantic), you don´t mind :)
14:23
It's turning into a total batting collapse
@Liam: I don't think so, these are due to poor shot selection of batsmen
@Aravona: Yeah, its a good question. Just a few hours since it is posted and look at the number of views it has got!
Ok so I've up voted every answer but chose one based on the fact he also mentioned clothing and tools... I just wish I could have chose everyones answer!
@Aravona: hehe
@Aravona wow, that are really a lot of answers. Congrats!
(plus a bit of support for a new guy)
14:33
@Aravona: (plus a bit of support for a new guy) ? Didn't get this
53.2 overs and just a single no-ball. Nice bowling by Englishmen. :)
Thats pretty rare
134 - 6
@WedaPashi I meant I also chose an answer ftom a new user :)
Ahh, Okay
@Aravona: Good!
Hopefully he will feel encouraged
He should. We are doing good with questions/day ratio :)
@Aravona I think this one was my favourite
3
A: Pitching a tent in the rain?

LiathAssuming you don't have an outer first tent pitching in the rain comes down to planning and practice. It is actually possible to stay fairly dry if you're organised. There is no sure fire method but there are a few tricks which can help you keep the inner dry. Don't wrap the tent poles up insi...

Not to disuade you obvs
14:46
@Liam, for the answer or the pub remark ;) ?
@Aravona bit of both
@Liam haha... like I said they were all great answers. The one I chose also was location specific to my post which was more helpful for me. As I said if I could accept them all I would!
@RoryAlsop: I am in a bit of confusion here. I usually flag comments that are not suited. The one by @PaulPaulsen was a welcoming and appreciating comment addressed to the new user who has given a good answer. Shall we keep them there or should they be flagged the way I just did. No offence @PaulPaulsen.
Wow that question had 500 views and as far asI can tell wasn't tweeted...
@Aravona: and @Liam: I am in a bit of confusion here. I usually flag comments that are not suited. The one by @PaulPaulsen was a welcoming and appreciating comment addressed to the new user who has given a good answer. Shall we keep them there or should they be flagged the way I just did. No offence @PaulPaulsen.
@Aravona: 500 views in 5 hours. great!
14:51
I thought it would be good practice to welcome new users. I can quit that, if you think it´s unsuited
@Aravona: I felt the same when I asked this one here: outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/4346/…
@WedaPashi If it is the odd one, I'd let it slide. We are still a beta, so welcoming new folks is probably good. On bigger sites "chatty" is often used when you get lots of comments
@PaulPaulsen: No, mate. You dont have to quit the habit
@RoryAlsop: Sounds like a good way to handle this. I'll take that in mind before I flag. I hope its perfectly Okay that I asked to clarify this a bit.
@WedaPashi clarification is always good!
Plus this chat is not just of on and off topic things, but meta type discussion as well
@Aravona: Here you go, accepted an answer and an upvote! :)
14:56
@WedaPashi thank you! I've gained 87 rep today ...! Mental!
@WedaPashi of course. Based on the only one of the sites I mod that has graduated so far, this phase is essential - be welcoming, set scope firmly, but be prepared to move as the community requires, let minor transgressions go with just a word, etc. Once we graduate, there are some changes to a slightly stricter set of practices (due to traffic etc) but at that stage the community gets to vote mods in, rather than just us pro tems
@Aravona That's how it works! If a question gets onto any popular list, it can launch. This includes the hot questions list here on SE, but also reddit, topical sites (eg any outdoors forum) etc
Yayy.. I crossed 2.5 K!
@RoryAlsop sounds like a plan
@WedaPashi yay!
TGO is alive and kicking
140 - 6
15:00
@RoryAlsop: Sounds like a plan. Nice way to go about it.
There's bird in the false roof of my office
and haliarity enuses
@Liam it does when you spell it like that, anyway!
@Liam: Open your windows, let it out!
@WedaPashi It's in the roof!
@RoryAlsop Lolz
@Liam Open your roof!
15:02
It has just started raining here in this part of india, and we had a Viper coiled in out store room a couple of days back. People went nuts!
@Liam: Aww.. @RoryAlsop: LOL @ Open your roof!
@WedaPashi I was very pleased at the lack of panic my kids had in the river in Spain last week when 3 water snakes swam past them. My youngest did curl her toes away from them, but remembered there are no venomous snakes in that region.
Snakes are people too
3
@RoryAlsop I'm just arranging to come up your way. We do it every year, watch the rugby in Edinburgh
Last year was fun ;)
@RoryAlsop: Bravo! I believe thats the way it should be. They are a vital part of ecological system and we as human have no rights to kill them on the go. They indeed are a beautiful species!
@RoryAlsop: How old are you btw?
@Liam good plan! Murrayfield?
@Liam: I like that :) We stumbled upon a hell otter in sweden two years ago. Was rolled in and sleeping deeply. You could really see it giving a jerk when we startled it
15:09
@WedaPashi early forties...
@WedaPashi a snake? cool! I saw a grass snake out in my local forest last year... it was tiny! Also saw a young buck holding his patch of ground in the forest - he only had little antlers bless him - wouldn't leave, we got about 20ft from him!
@Aravona: Thats the right thing to do.
It was funny... my other half said it was a tree stump, to which I replied... 'Tree Stumps Don't Move!'
@Aravona: Haha.. That is what happens most of the time. Few of them have such a great camouflage that you don't really notice till you get too close.
@Aravona: That is probably the reason behind my first snake bite. I didn't see it, it didn't miss!
Oh you know yesterday I saidrwe have a lot of Karrimor gear? ... add walking poles and mats to that list... goodness
15:14
@RoryAlsop Yeah, Last year was hilarious. (the match was in in Cadiff but we went to edinburgh anyway) Walked into a bar and got told that if scotland win we get a free drink (all wearing wales shirts) 10 mins in scotlands best player gets sent off, we all returned our free drink vouchers to the manager...he was not amused
@WedaPashi this snake was probably thinner and not much longer than a pencil
@Liam @WedaPashi 149-7
One last cricket question, before I am off for today
@Aravona: My schoolmate is still batting! #Glad!
you want the first number to be high and the second low, right?
@PaulPaulsen: You got it!
@PaulPaulsen: The second can't get into double digits for that inning. The first can (shaluld) go 3 figures.
@Aravona: There are species which are that small. Check this out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echis This buddy is known for bad in india
15:19
@Liam hahahaha. Well, in Edinburgh we always assume Scotland will lose but plan to party anyway. When we win the whole city goes mental.
(shaluld) >>> *should
@WedaPashi Okay, thanks for the explanation
I am off, have a nice weekend!
@PaulPaulsen enjoy!
@PaulPaulsen: Wish you the same. Enjoy!
@PaulPaulsen have a good weekend!
15:24
thanks, and bye!
@Liam in regards to the event idea ... the idea of possibly putting a rep bonus to the best question would be cool, but is it feasible within the scope of what SE can do?
@Aravona You can award bounties?
For example

Q: Selecting a hammer drill for bolting climbs

Nikos AlexandrisSetting up a (sport) climb, requires a good cordless hammer drill (SDS shank compatible). Besides the price-tag, things to consider, for selecting such a tool, are its weight, its shape and the handling experience. Besides these, which make life easier while hanging on the wall, Which are the i...

This comes out of someone's rep
@Liam I know but that sort of defies the ppint of it being an event with a prize in my mind
Plus doesn't reward the question just the answer
@Aravona I'm not 100% sure. Our moderator (@RoryAlsop) will likely be able to answer better than me
@Aravona ah right, I get ya
We do do events. Let me grab a couple of links for you. Security had one for graduating (I think, or maybe 1st anniversary of graduation)
this one was proposed competition stuff
oops - here is the official post:
20
Q: Official Security Stack Exchange Anniversary Competition

Rory AlsopAs Security Stack Exchange has just passed its 1st anniversary of graduation, we are going to follow in the tradition of other sites and run a competition. With prizes! Cool ones! Obviously in order to deserve these prizes you'll need to put in some effort, but I know you will rise to the chall...

15:40
@RoryAlsop ooh that looks interesting!
@Aravona the prizes were very cool
The Arqade has had two so far, I think
I think I only won one prize, but it was the Corsair USB key - incidentally the one I even take on sailing holidays, as it is 100% waterproof and it floats
maybe I got the USB key separately - looks like I won the t-shirt... hmmm, can't remember
@RoryAlsop where do the prizes come from?
@Liam Stack Exchange
@RoryAlsop How do we get them involved or is it down to them?
We basically had a fair amount of chat between the mods and SE, we came up with proposed prizes and a basic scoring system, then SE let us know which prizes they could support and confirmed they could measure the metrics we defined (which meant they had to change them slightly)
15:44
this has been mentioned a couple of times now
I think it's a good idea. I also think we've gained a little traction the last week or so and it'd be good to keep that traction moving forward
An "end of summer" event could be good. We are an outdoors site?
I suppose summer is relative though...?
Agreed. Sounds like a good plan :)
the USB would be perfect for outdoor web site
(as a prize if you see what I mean)
@Liam For things like 1st anniversary of graduation it was an easy sell - I think they are almost official. Before that it is a bit trickier - although it appears to be standard practice to provide some swag for the top 1 or two pages of users on graduation.
Ok then, Its 9.30 pm here. End of Day! Gonna cycle down a good 10 mile distance to home! See ya tomorrow! God Bless! Good Night!
Step one though - let me ask in the Teacher's Lounge
15:50
@RoryAlsop Well that's fine 24th Jan
@RoryAlsop yep...see how we go
@Liam we haven't graduated yet...
@RoryAlsop So it's post graduation?
I'm tempted to award some bounties based on best answer to a good question. Spread a bit of love about
It's only magic unicorn points...
Bit unofficial but it'd be quick an easy to do

Okay - so. Timeline:
Pitching in with some bounties - always good. As long as we set criteria for what deserves bounties. Even better if a few high rep folks pitch in
Competitions - if we can get a lot of interest, and can pull together a good overview of what the competition should be and possible prizes, then SE may be able to do something. The focus is on raising activity/quality/membership etc - so working out how to do this and reward it can be appropriate.
At the end of the day it has to be a value add for SE, but in principle we have a yes, pending details
It gets simpler after graduation, as then there is a design etc, but at this stage, there are a few options
If you have a read of not only that security competition page, but also others like the Arquade competitions, you'll see what sort of measurements can be made
But remember, the focus should not be on the swag - but what will make a positive benefit to the site
@RoryAlsop sounds like a plan
@RoryAlsop Meta question? or something we should discuss here?
I'm away to meet t'wife for dinner - but will look at how we take this forwards later on. A lot of the initial activity will be in here, need to ensure all the mods are on board to support, then meta q
the more community members on board, the better too

@Liam This question was a Hot Network Question: http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/11602/what-formula-should-be-used-to-determine-hot-questions

So there were e.g. a lot of hits at the beginning and it was declared as a HNQ which made people look at the question and answer for the first time and so on. Those questions are pretty nice to attract people and traffic for us. I was also surprised when I got so many upvotes here, because it was also a HNQ...http://outdoors.stackexchange.com/questions/5695/what-is-the-point-of-hiking-boots-versus-any-comfortable-walking-shoes/5696#5696
