2.4 questions a day now, going up!

1 hour later…
08:07
Hello @EverythingRightPlace. I'm only really on 9-5:30 UK time!
I think that's the highest I've seen it @Aravona. Still plenty of room for improvement but it's much better
I agree @Liam ... things seem to slowly be growing.
09:05
2.5 .... and hopefully climbing!
Off topic question: I tend to favour a single brand for most of my gear... does this matter or should I avoid all my eggs being in one basket?
Personal preference
I love DMM stuff because it's very high quality and it's made up the road
and they have a factory outlet shop where you can get cosmetic seconds cheap!
It does help with racking sometimes, I know all wild country nuts (across ranges) come in the same colour for the same size so it does make it easier to identify them
That's a bit "climby"
But I suppose none climbing stuff (walking whatever) is likely to fit/work together better if it's all one brand.
But I wouldn't imagine it makes a massive difference
09:23
I just realised the other day just how much of my gear is Karrimor... tshirts, walking shoes, jackets, 65L packs, dry sacks... even hand warmers lol
I have a lot of North Face gear because (again) there is an outlet shop near by and I can get it cheap
It's amazing the markup they add on this kind of stuff
I did some work for a famous bike retailer, they were using 250% markup habitually.
It's been a good period of growth, no? think it'll contiue?
continue?
09:46
Nice. looks like somehow some serious chatting begun here :)
I blame @Aravona...
Yeah, I think this particular tools been somewhat neglected
well, I hope isn´t so bad that it could prevent me from getting my thesis done....
I also... but there was like a message per month.
But it was pretty empty in here
09:49
well, I will start to look in here more often.
yeah, I think @Aravona chatted to @RoryAlsop a bit and it's snowballed (a little) from there
@Liam just needs a few folks to be a bit chatty and it can grow
Indeed
@Aravona I sort of do this, but mostly because if I'm in a shop/on a website getting kit I like, I may well see other stuff and I just end up adding things to my basket
10:08
Yeah @Liam and @RoryAlsop ... I mostly do it because sports direct still have it all at up to 70% off... I like the clothes and the walking shoes.... but liking Karrimor started in a small outdoors shop in North Wales... just glad I could find it so easily down here too!
@Aravona whereabouts are you? I'm quite spoilt as I live halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow so we not only have Mountain Warehouse, Sports Direct etc within 5 minutes, we also have Go Outdoors and Decathlon and the bigger stores about 15 minutes drive away.
If I can avoid it anyway
Same here, there's a huge Go outdoors on my doorstep, a north face outlet shop just outside chester, a couple of cotswolds outlet's, DMM factory shop, etc. etc. I hardly ever pay full price for anything
I mix a lot of different brands. Also cause I am a student and can´t afford the expensive brands in the most cases, and with the cheaper ones you might find that they have one nice pair of pants or one tent model but no more
I'm down south in Buckinghamshire. We have alot of Sports Directs and a few Cotswold Outdoors... then the usual Blacks / Millets though I don't tend to buy from them anymore
10:25
@Aravona For my sins, I live just outside a town built around a discount outlet centre... but the perks for things like this are quite handy. @Paul - if you are a cash strapped student, definitely keep an eye on the outlet shops. I tend to get stuff that might be in last season's colours, but it's often half the price or better.
I recently bought a North Face holdall for about 1/2 price, it was a cosmetic second, only issue, a tiny tiny black mark on the inside!! I take the thing everywhere now.
bananafingers.co.uk do some good deals. The service is excellent too
You ever been to that "indoor" climbing place in Edinburgh, where the climbing walls are in a quarry with a roof @RoryAlsop? My mate pointed it out to me when I was up that way visiting. Looks very cool
good to know. thanks for the tips
We got a lot of our gear discount... we very rarely pay full price for anything. One place we love is a small outdoors store near us caled foxes outdoor. It's only local and isn't a chain. We will pay full price there as we like to support them. But they do a biannual tent show. We keep debating a vango halo 300 ... they even had it discounted and with extra groundsheet if you brought on the day... always so tempting
@Liam yep - I've been taking my kids there for 9 years now. World's biggest indoor climbing centre (which is a bit of a cheat as it would be an outdoor climbing centre if they hadn't just added a roof over the quarry)
It's really good fun for sport climbing
I love Vango's @Aravona
Great quality tent
10:34
Tallest climb in only 25 metres or so, but that is more than enough for practice. Routes range from 3 (for the little kids) up to an 8C+ I think (which is for limpets, or teenage girls, by the look of things)
It look's well cool. @RoryAlsop There's been a mini boom in indoor climbing venues down this way recently, there's about 4 within 10 miles of each other now
The sports really growing indoors at the moment
Yeah 8c+ is pretty extreme. @RoryAlsop, My local gym sponsors shauna coxey, it's embarrassing (to me) what she can climb
she was unlucky not to get the gold in the worlds the other week
Ironically my fiance is getting our gear out and just text me saying 'Good lord we have a lot of Karrimor stuff'
I always thought I was a good climber till I see some of those kids. Now I just blame my weight for my poor power to weight ratio :-)
ha ha yep, said that before now @RoryAlsop
Well look at her, she weighs what 5 stone...? and that hand hold is much bigger in her little hands....If I was that size I'd smash that climb :(
ha ha @Aravona
I did a 1 mile high climb for sport relief one year, partnered with a stuntman/pole vaulter friend of mine. We did it taking turns climbing the tallest 6B route at the EICA. After a few hours, I was struggling, and he was climbing some laps blindfold, or hands only...
He was 2 stone lighter than me, and probably a wee bit stronger
10:40
6bs about the top end of my abilities!
But still - I have a desk job, so what can I expect
@Liam At my peak I was 6B to 6C, and I'm a stone heavier now...
My son (nearly 14) is managing high 5s and nearly at a 6A stage. I'm proud, but also gutted
ha ha
blame her little hands....it makes you feel better
The best thing is his sister (aged 12) is a better climber - just not as tall, so can't make some of the stretches.
so she'll beat him soon enough
I wish I'd taken it up at that age
how much is a stone?
10:44
I only got into it when I was too old
@PaulPaulsen just over a KG
6Kg, sorry
okay, thanks.
14 pounds
I think only UK uses stones these days
?
Chat loads so slow on a mobile :(
Though seems someone from area 51 who didn't realise we have scuba diving questions have come over to TGO :)
@Liam Doesn't the US as well?
UK and US uses pounds?
10:48
@Aravona pounds and stone. Imperial measures. 1 lb = 0.453592 kg
1 st = 6.3503 kg
1 st = 14 lb
My doctors uses KG over stone now
@Aravona think my generation is just mixed up. I know miles, miles per hour and miles per gallon, and don't yet have a feel for filling the car up in litres; but I also use metres and centimetres, except for my height which is in feet and inches. I also prefer beer in pints over 1/2 litres. And Fahrenheit makes no sense to me
Hoping the weather is good this weekend. Will be the first time we try our new kayaks out ;)
I am sorry, but I don´t get that imperial system. I seems so clumsy. And as an engineer I couldn´t imagine working with anything but SI units
@PaulPaulsen oh, I 100% agree with that. My degree was in engineering so all I used was SI units - but in my head some units are natural, others aren't. I still prefer acres to hectares, for example.
10:53
Lol @RoryAlsop ... I'm 25 and use feet and inches for height. Miles for distance... mpg and mph... I know how many litres my car holds just because the pump tells me when I top up. My weight is pounds and stone... measurements are pints and cups... unless the recipe says otherwise! Beer is always a pint. Anything else is sinful.
I'm starving.
@Aravona good call. Sandwich shop is calling me
half hour wait for our usual lunch time here...
2.5 now for questions!
I think the US just uses pounds (not stone) for some reason?
11:20
I just saw this question and the close votes:
1
Q: To trek solo or not!

WedaPashiI was going through this amazing post here at TGO which talks of trekking solo. As far as I know of TGO, this question here might sound a really opinion-based question, but I would rather take up a chance to post it outright. I have trekked solo a hundred times, and I do have had close shaves on...

I#'d have to agree with Liam - this is a discussion topic, rather than a question, so it fits in chat, but not so much on the main Q/A site
I think it might be worth keeping it open if we focus on pro´s and con´s.
Of course you can´t decide it, but you can give the arguments and help everybody with the decision.
@PaulPaulsen I only had one suggestion that might work, so @WedaPashi might be able to edit it accordingly
hm. I think not only the risks, but also the gains are interesting. But I get the point
@PaulPaulsen true - the benefits would also be interesting.
11:51
Okay, I am leaving. Nice to see some life around here :)
@PaulPaulsen :-)
I think this covers that post quite well.
12:07
Anybody into Alpinism? My long term plan is get climb mont blonc in the next couple of years
Booking into a winter skills course in the highlands this winter to get some skillz, yo
Oh nice! :)
It's the kit that's a killer, pair of B1 or B2 rated boots are about £300 new
Ice axe another £100
crampons another £100
Been trying to keep my eyes on ebay or look for some bargains
anyone selling any winter alpine kit?
:)
never done any winter stuff (other than snowboarding / skiing) - it always looked too, well, icy
Not really into Ice climbing @RoryAlsop. screwing a piece of metal into a glorified icicle and calling it protection is a bit mental for my liking
more winter walking
I've done plenty in snowdonia but we don't get the same conditions as scotland
or france
Is this chat all a bit climby technical?
12:22
@Liam today, yes. Yesterday - not so much :-)
variety is good
:)
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea
lot's of buzz words too
At some point I would like to try ice climbing, but it doesn't strike me as safe. As you said, metal spike into ice (not even very deeply into ice) and it's supposed to carry your weight?
yeah, I'd second it. Lead it, sod off..
:)
Worse than wedging a piece of metal the size of your finger nail into a crack?!
Just seems wrong
@Liam well. it's almost certainly a mental block. Rocks are relatively permanent. Ice just isn't
yeah, that's how I feel too!
Winter stuff does have the added advantage of carrying around a massive metal axe and putting spikes on your feet. Who wouldn't want that?
12:30
I think I drunk that irn bru too fast...
hey @Kevin
missed him....
Right I'm leaving for a bit
this is all proving too distracting
@Liam that is true
I wish my work was outsidey... but I'm a php developer
@Aravona no such thing as too fast Irn Bru!
@Aravona I sit next to a window
so I can see the nice weather
@Liam later
I like the distraction @Liam
12:38
@RoryAlsop Hi. I am absolutely new to the chat at SO. So kindly bear with me if I take too long to reply
I don't know how this chat @ SO thing works, so could you please care to shed some light on how this stuff works, I mean how you guys discuss things around here.
@WedaPashi no worries. I tend to just have the chat windows open in background anyway, so I often don't spot a message straight away
Basically you can reply to someone by clicking on the little arrow at the right of their post
or you can use @WedaPashi
Ahh. Got that.. Thanks Rory
and chat is really useful for things that aren't suited to the Q&A format
in Security chat about 5% of it is actually security, and the rest is about food, hobbies, nonsense, music etc#
Oh, Seems like I have been missing so much fun
For that question on trekking, I think from the brief discussion with Paul (scroll up a wee bit) I think it is probably recoverable - need to edit it to make it less 'opinion based'
right - think I have to go to my next meeting. Back in an hour or so
12:51
@PaulPaulsen Hi Paul. I am new to the chat at SE sites. Please consider my apologies in case I reply late.
@PaulPaulsen As @RoryAlsop helped me pointing at the right direction in a way that I can probably modify the question a bit and make it a less opinion-based question (which I had already mentioned in the question when I posted it), I would rather give it a thought if I really need to keep it there, or discuss here. The only thing that urges me modify is: New users won't have access to chat and discussions (?)
Despite having it discussed in chat if you can feasibly write into a question that is on topic and not so opinion based you should post it up anyway... so other people can see it and so other can give their opinion.
hi @WedaPashi
@Liam How much does a Mont Blanc thing cost?
This was discussed on meta by myself and Liam and we discussed the chat as a tool for web growth :)
Hi @Liam
13:03
I was thinking you seemed to want to chew over some ideas on this issue. This is the perfect place for that
@Liam: Got that right mate
Mont Blanc. You need a permit and you need to book some of the huts
I'm not 100% sure TBH
I'm still working up to that detail
:)
My thoughts at the moment are to obtain some winter skills first
@Liam: Would you mind sharing the details when you have them with you?
I'd like to do it without a guide yousee
Yeah sure
erm...hold on
@Liam ... regional winter skills ;) winter can be warm
13:05
@Liam: Same here, rather I'll need to do some expeds around Himalayas, so that I get used to things in winters
@Aravona: Agreed, winters can be warm, indeed. But whats warm for you can be cold for me.. I live in India, 37 DegCel is a usual temperature here for us. 15 degCel, we get cold
Here you go @WedaPashi, have a read through this
@WedaPashi that's why I said regional winter skills... I live in England where it's cold at -5 to 5 C ... you cold at 15C is warm... 37C is insufferable for me!
This article give an interesting perspective on some of the issues surrounding the area right now too
Worst Heat I've suffered was taking my 15L bag on a hike between our villa and the local supermarket in Lanzerote in 50C with dry Sahara winds blowing... brilliant holiday
Doesn't have costs but it talks about some of the things you need
Takes a lot of kit and the knowledge to use it
cost comes after that
ha ha @Aravona
13:11
@Liam ... we brought beer and fizzy drinks back in our bags... some food... mostly beer.. kept us cool in that heat ;)
@Aravona Haha
@Liam: Thanks liam, I will grab the details from the sites that you shared.
I've lost my waterproof trousers (we moved house) and my wind up torch :/ was hoping to take both to Wales for our charity climb :(
Weathers pretty decent in wales right now @Aravona, who know's maybe you won't need them :)
@Liam hope not... but rather not get caught without them when I need them ;) I think my fiance had them last.
I'm guessing I can't get away with some shameless plugging of our justgiving page lol?
You can plug it, not saying you'll get any money though :P
What's the link @Aravona?
13:20
@Aravona: Borrow if you don't have them with ya right now. I have had bad times for being lethargic about carrying some stuff when I took weather for granted. :P
@Aravona: Lesson I have learned: Never share gears unless its damn necessary with a girl :D I have so far misplaced a lot of equipment when my girl borrowed it. :P
I wish I could choose the himalayas over the alps @WedaPashi...
@Liam: Can't compare. For me Every mountain has it's own charm and moods :)
yep, true dat
@WedaPashi... I'm the girl...
@Liam: Yeah, if you plan something in Himalayas, do let me know, I'd rather help you as much I can when its about planning local stuff. With gears and technicalities, you have more wisdom than I do.
@Aravona: Ahh, sorry about that then! Didn't know
ha ha, himalyas! I wish @WedaPashi. Bit far away for me
@WedaPashi lol np. My better half packes our camping gear when we moved thats why he saw them last :)
Love the dog @Aravona
Thanks @Liam, she is a real sweetheart, just a shame she got cancer as a pup :(
13:29
@Aravona
Only a little
I've got a boston terrier
called fester
Oh @Liam ... he is Adorable!!
He's an idoit
Loverable one
:D
@Aravona haha - yup. The temps on my holiday (nr Gibraltar) were >20C at night and up towards 40C during the day. I'm Scottish. These two factors do not mesh well. I prefer -20 to +15 as a healthy range
@Liam: Cute dog! I have a pomeranian
And thank you so much
13:33
Here he is in mountain mode
No probs @Aravona
His furs short so we have to wrap him up in winter
@Liam: And, is that you in a violet jacket?
No! that's my girlfriend
Oh mountain mode makes him look badass
He's wearing every piece of spare clothing I had
Including a scarf he later pee'd on
Awww! I can't wait to have a dog again. Just not financially viable right now
Mmmm pee scarf
I love the logic of a dogs mind
13:40
@Aravona: Financially viable? How much does a pet cost?
@Aravona There you go.
@Aravona Our challenge is time. Three kids between 8 and 13. My job is 45-60 hours a week in various locations. So we have a cat.
Well @WesaPashi a pedigree german shephard is between 500-800 ... we want a cross so more 300-600 then add having him snipped... jabs and vet bills in the first year... food etc... around 1500-2000 for the first year? ... and we are scraping together a house deposit so :/ pup woll have to wait
Will*
Oh, you know you can edit your posts in chat, for a while anyway. Not sure how much grace you get - maybe a couple of minutes
Cats are good @RoryAlsop We had a cat for 17 years :)
@Aravona: Thank god, pets in india don't cost that much.
13:45
And thank you so so much for contributing!
@WedaPashi yeah that was in £'s... forgot to say
habit on mobile to just put numbers in and forget the currancy
@Aravona Our oldest got to 18. Our current one is 10-ish. We always get them from cat protection, so they cost £1 plus inoculations. Really cheap. Because they are pretty much mongrels (domestic shorthairs) they never get ill until the just get too old.
Cinders is very grateful I've just been told :)
And they come already neutered
@Aravona lol
@RoryAlsop we had a mongrel tabby - she had kittens are 1 year old, which we kept for a year then gave to good homes. She was diabetic, had a blood disorder, deaf and blind... but she was wonderful :)
@Aravona: Donated.
@Aravona: err, transfer was declined.. Lemme try again
13:53
@Liam and @Weda - upvoted your comments on the sleeping bag question :-)
14:03
@RoryAlsop: Thanks. Instead of closing to vote so sooner, shouldn't we let the user to edit it a bit so that he/she can make it a sensible question. Honestly I doubt that, because most of the answer would point in two ways: Either throw the bag away, or get higher altitudes :P
@RoryAlsop: I just didn't vote to close because I thought the user is new here, and would be good if gets a chance to re-frame it a bit.
@RoryAlsop: Err, *Instead of voting to close so sooner
Whats wrong with my typing today :( May be had too much of coding for the day :D
If the user improves the question it get's put into the reopen queue automatically. If it's wrong I vote to close. TBF, on SO it's pretty cut throat @WedaPashi
@WedaPashi On beta sites of this size, voting to close but adding a comment to help the OP learn is probably the best plan. There aren't many active folks voting to close etc. so it isn't as vicious as SO, as @Liam said. On the sites I mod, I usually wait until at least 3 votes to close, as a mod vote is binding.
Fester is a posh dog
I didn't buy him, he's my girlfriends really
She came back from Canada and decided to blow her savings
@Liam: LOL at "blow her savings" :D
I would of prob got a mongrel
but he is (checks no one's looking) cute
14:11
@RoryAlsop Ok, gotcha. Closed to vote
@RoryAlsop Arrghh! Voted to Close.
ha ha
Guys its almost 8 pm and I gotta leave now. End of Day! Have a great day ahead!
@WedaPashi see you later
See ya @WedaPashi
@RoryAlsop: Upvoted your comment!
14:29
Hiya @Alex
Hows it going?
Oh ...This user has been temporarily suspended by a moderator and cannot chat for 6 days.
fail
Yeah - 15 hours ago. Not sure what for, though
I love the questions posted on the right for scifi. sE
How exactly do you answer this question

Q: Was the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone really that well protected?

BitNinjaThe Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) stone was moved from Gringotts to Hogwarts because Dumbledore wanted the stone to be better protected. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone however, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, three 11 year-olds, manage to get through seven magical obstacles designed to protect ...

erm...it's book...
You are totally overthinking this
14:45
> A bit like the way that people somehow always end up defending against James Bond using beautiful women, fast cars, parachuting sequences, drinking contests, fistfights, etc. That'll work, gets him right outside his comfort zone. A less perfectly capable protagonist, with less benefit of dramatic irony, wouldn't hit the sequence of X's on the stage floor that takes them smoothly through the mayhem and would be defeated.
love it
ha ha
I've just noticed your donation to @Aravona, @RoryAlsop...now I feel stingy...
@Liam ... Tescos has it right
Sorry all... got dragged into a spontaneous meeting...
@Liam don't be silly. Sometimes money is available. Sometimes not.
@Aravona took me a while to get that
Currently - It's a pretty good couple of months
In fundraising for my wee daughter's event, most of my friends managed a tenner, and a stranger on the internet (I knew from SE) pitched in £100. He had money to spare and felt it was a good cause. Karma tells me these things all come round
15:03
@RoryAlsop that's nice of him! Yeah, an act of kindness is worth every penny
....I just made that up
@Liam haha!
@RoryAlsop a little kindness goes a long way. I helped pay for Cinders operation and I want to help other families in need. We are all very grateful
Oh, this questions been edited

Q: Sleeping bag too hot

BadgerIs there something I can do to be cooler in a -15degree centigrade down sleeping bag when it is cold but not quite -15 degrees centigrade? I have a down sleeping bag rated at -15 degrees Centigrade. Used it at a previous hike where the temperature went down to -5 degrees Centigrade. I was uncomf...

Oh cool I saw that one. Trying to encourage people but keeping things clear and on topic isn't easy
Nope, it's not
I've voted to reopen
15:19

I think Liam just wanted everyone to chat lol
17:52
Right off for now. Cya tomorrow all. Thank yiu again for your kindness and generosity
18:41
@Liam reopened. And I left a pretty average answer, so more than happy for others to leave better ones.
19:29
Wow lots of chatting here, hi all
Is it just me or are we getting questions with quite a lot of hits in the last couple of weeks?
Maybe some are even featured?
I mean Hot Network Questions

Q: How can I take duct tape with me backpacking?

User1996I'm going on a backpacking trip later this summer and on the list of things to bring is 3 yards of duct tape. I don't want to bring an entire roll of duct tape because it would be heavy and cumbersome, as well as far too much tape. How can I bring 3 yards of duct tape without it getting stuck to...

Nearly 500 views in 3 hours, most questions are getting 20 views the first day...
19:43
Everybody loves duct tape :--)
Seems so
There it is at position 5
But not in the list at the right side
User1996 asked the Q, I believe
?
Who is he :P
No eye deer
I'm pretty new here, myself
Welcome at TGO :D
19:51
Thanks!
20:12
@orangejewelweed LOL
Not sure if this is normal but that question appears to feature on the SE twitter feed
How can I take ducktape with me backpacking? http://outdoors.stackexchange.com/q/6063?atw=1 #backpacking
Hi Liam Wazzup?
I don't use twitter as I don't care what Kanye west has to say
;)
Alreet
I'm not stopping, got an episode of breaking bad to watch, yes, yes I know everyone else watched it about 2 years ago, I have a short attention span
:)
I saw the last 2 or 3 seasons just 2 months or so ago
BTW, I'd love to know how or why that question got so much love so quickly?
Kbye
Best tv serial I've ever seen
It is a hot network question
Don't ask me why
Yeah, magnets bitch!
Yeah, science Mr.White!
