Though I was saddened to hear that I will not get to contribute my rendition of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead"
which witch?
I'm certain I have no comment on that.
Except to say that I am among those who are saddened to see C.Ross go
I was bummed about the whole afro thing. Was looking forward to it. :(
@Lord_Gareth Are none of the old mods returning? BBS, etc?
@JohnP Brian and mxy will keep their spots
@JohnP BBS & Myx will remain.
02:35
C. Ross is only leaving because he wants to
Moderation, like Cuban dictatorship, is for life.
Like Cuban dictatorship, this is a poor idea that is now difficult to change

Lets still be nice, okay. Elections don't mean the Stack policies aren't still in play.

Though that's a song and dance I've been through before re: not agreeing with the creation of el Modidente
@BESW I know, I know. Please, forgive me for being a bit bitter about a topic that's personally and consistently affected me
I'm not entirely sanguine about forcing moderators to un-appoint themselves, for a wide variety of reasons including that it's not entirely fair to the mods. But we aren't exactly going to change that here; it's a discussion that's only productive in other venues.
@BESW aye, largely MSE
02:40
Here, it's a distraction that will only make us bitter and frustrated and get in the way of actual election chat.
@BESW THEN I SHALL HOST THE DISCUSSION AT A REN FAIRE
GRAB THY COSTUME AND BEST BAD ACCENT
@Lord_Gareth Which costume? I performed at a ren faire for 6 years, I have a bunch.
Forsooth, me matey, I hasten forthwith to the powow.
ATM I can say that Wax has the majority of my interest
In all seriousness, I'm making a personal effort to not say anything for or against any specific candidate during this election. Instead I'll be happy to have conversations about the qualities a moderator should have.
02:48
@BESW I think we can agree that being chill as all hell is one of the desirable traits. Breaking up fights without seeming biased or involved is hard.
Brian used to do that before he ascended to his planar form and became a sapient editing program
Yup.
I also think it's more important that a moderator understand RPG.SE than that they understand RPGs.
Sadly he's not so talkative any more
We've got lots of experts in RPGs here, and there's so many it's impossible to expect our mods to be fluent in all of them anyway. A good grasp of not only Stack protocols but this site's specific policies and attitudes, however, is something more crucial and probably less readily found amongst our citizenry.
@BESW agree with that wholeheartedly.
@Lord_Gareth He's still quite active in comment-and-delete corners of the Stack.
02:49
@BESW Familiarity with the ongoing culture wars is probably also suggested. No innocent should step into that
@Lord_Gareth Aye. But you don't really need to be an expert on all the D&Ds to break up RAW/RAI squabbles.
@BESW Hence saying familiarity with the culture war and not the debate itself
Since the actual problem is one side saying the other is illegitimate and needs to get out of the hobby and possibly live in a hole forever
(Not that I'm bitter)
(I say bitterly, with a bitter expression)
"Holes are too good 'em, I say!"
But yes, I think that's why Dark's proposed questions got downvoted so heavily on meta.
I missed that. What happened?

Q: 2015 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

Grace NoteIn connection with the moderator elections, we will be holding a Q&A with the candidates. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to pose questions to the candidates on the topic of moderation. Participation is completely voluntary. Here's how it'll work: During the nominati...

02:54
Ah. Yes, I can see how and why that happened
I won't kick the poor man while he's down.
Dark's participation on the site is enthusiastic and heartfelt, which is the fastest way to figure out how things work if your skin is tough.
Indeed.
Though the sad thing there is that looking around, we're like the second-nicest stack
Only Writers is more directly welcoming and friendly
Which is probably why we get so many "WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN" complaints.
We lost a user just yesterday to slightly over-enthusiastic help narrowing down his question.
[Nod-nods]
Do we want a new moderator to help temper that or are we happy with being a mostly friendly community with a few deep wounds?
If one of our biggest problems really is that we're so gung-ho about helping people fix poor questions that we scare them away sometimes... that's freaking awesome.
03:00
@BESW Heh. Reminds me of a template I wrote where creatures with it heal others by sucking the wounds off of them, leaving behind soothing warmth. Unfortunately when they see injuries they start foaming at the mouth and bound forward in a frenzy to eat the w ounds.
Which leaves the poor "victim" terrified and probably fighting back
So... yeah, we could use some further education on how to help. It'd be nice to see that.
But I'm not sure it really IS the most pressing concern for this site right now.
And if it IS our biggest problem--well, then I think a lot of other Stacks would kill to have our problems.
I honestly think our biggest ongoing personal problem is aforementioned culture war. It cuts across systems and manifests in multiple kinds of questions. It causes bad blood in chat. It's certainly caused ongoing grudges. It's lead to the accusations of biased moderation and it's certainly caused toxic comments & snide asides in both answers and questions.
@BESW I think a lot of other Stacks don't even realise they have problems.
Not that I'm glaring hatefully at anyone in particular. That might mean I'm a bitter person. No one would mistake me for someone bitter, right?
Because when we're not dealing in that
We're all really friendly and welcoming and funny
But then some jackass picks a fight and all of a sudden it's Slaughter City.
Takes two, man. One jerk mouthing off is just a jerk mouthing off.
03:06
Mm. We've had this discussion before about what it means when said person mouthing off is seen as a representative of the site and the community. Let's not have it again.
Nobody involved in mutual exchanges of vitriol is a blameless victim.
I think our moderation and community has made great strides in this area over the last year.
It'd be good for the new moderators to be dedicated to continuing that progress.
@BESW That I'll drink to.
...In fact I still have a shot of vodka in this bottle, I'ma go toast it
[Goes to get vodka]
[Returns with vodka, raises shot glass]
Drink hail!
(...Does...does no one know the traditional reply to that?)
03:33
[cricket chirps]
04:22
@Lord_Gareth wikipedia says that 'drink hail' IS the traditional reply, to a call of 'was hail'! so i have no idea!

3 hours later…
06:55
@doppelgreener The call-response is "Drink hail" (from the host/leader/chief) -> "Wassail" (from the guests/followers/soldiers)
07:53
@Lord_Gareth i will remember this! :D

@BESW I almost commented on that when it went up, because its quite frankly the least important thing for a moderator to have, the user base are the ones who need up to date gaming knowledge.
you can (though it's harder) effectively moderate a site you know nothing about.
you can definitely moderate a site about something which you are proficient in, but not expert.
I fall into the second category on both the sites I moderate.
hence wassailing being the precursor to carolling @Lord_Gareth
@waxeagle OH im not saying its not a bonus and it doesnt help, but nominees squaring off their respective RPG experiences is wagging the dog I feel
12:49
@JoshuaAslanSmith definitely. Likely anyone who wants to run (certainly all of us currently running) has enough proficiency that it's not a concern.
@waxeagle i see this on boardgames.se but thankfully it's much easier to understand other RPGs
@doppelgreener yeah, I can totally see how that would be
I need to visit there more often
I have a lot of knowledge in taht area
its just Im not up to date on netrunner or MTG
13:11
@JoshuaAslanSmith if you enjoy "what happens when these two rules collide in this circumstance?" questions like here, you'll love it
except the problem there is that MTG never distributes the basic rules with its product, so players usually have no idea what the rules are, so most questions involve explaining them
which is a bit tiresome, imagine if people played D&D on word of mouth or figuring it out from a summary of it, and then came here asking questions, and you had to show them there is actually a book, and explain basics from it like how attacking works, and that was just the norm because "I read the book" is an expert statement not a baseline requirement
@doppelgreener That's horrifying to imagine
@doppelgreener this is actually something I've noticed with Pokemon. I have no idea how to learn the rules to teach my son (outside of the very basic rules included in the starter we bought). I don't care much right now, but very soon I'm sure we'll be interested in deck building etc beyond him just looking at the cards and trading them with his friends
Back in my day, a rulebook came in every box of 40+ Magic cards.
at the moment fat packs (9 booster packs) and starter decks come with a rules foldout that crudely summarises all the necessary stuff
booster boxes only contain boosters, boosters only contain cards
there exists a core rulebook but i have never seen a physical copy of it
fat packs come with a collector book but not the rules book
Dude. I had a 60-page rulebook with pages slightly bigger than half a card. The print made me feel like I was going blind back when I was 12.
13:26
wow.
@BESW I remember that. I haven't bought a pack of magic cards since 1999 :/
@DavidWilkins I started in... 1995.
Or '98, maybe? Thereabouts.
But this should really go to a different chat.
@doppelgreener yeah I am the rules guy for boardgames in my circle of friends for rules parsing
I was just joking that half the questions seem to be netrunner or MTG card specific questions
@waxeagle I believe they sell rules compendiums for MTG and pokemon and/or you can find the total ruleset online
@JoshuaAslanSmith cool, will look into that when we're ready to actually learn :)
