01:00 - 13:0013:00 - 00:00

1:00 PM
Subjects are English, Physics, Maths, Psychology and Computer Science.

@Damien Well I wish the working part away; the home time is fine, but shorter than other weekend days

@RaghavSood if you need help any time with Maths and Physics, I am happy to (am a Physics PhD)
@BenBrocka that could make an interesting question

Thanks for the offer! I'll let you know if I do, though I think I'm good for now
The current syllabus isn't too hard

I haven't asked here in months, I'm out of practice

I'm jealous, I didn't get a choice at your age @Raghav!

1:03 PM
wow, lots of new questions at once

I would have likely chosen very similar subjects

India's system is such. For the first 10 years, everything is compulsory. Then for 2 years, we can choose one subject out of Computers, art, economics, commerce, Physical education and home science
And for our final two years, only english is compulsory.

I have to say, the subjects you are doing sound awesome

You can choose any other 4 you like
My subjects are unconventional in India :P
Usually you choose one of three streams: Science, commerce or humanities.
Mine is a mix between science and humanities, since i dropped chem for psycho
I'm terrible at Chemistry

unconventional is good - be a rebel... and chem sucks

1:05 PM
Agreed 100% on both unconventional and how much I loathe chemistry :-)
(apologies to @jonsca)

Those are basically the choices you have
Any combination is acceptable, as long as you only have one subject from each column, and you have English

that looks awesome - pretty nice subjects there!
what topics do you study in maths and physics?
@JoshGitlin in my earlier days I was a geochemist - that I understood, but the rest of it was all just stamp collecting to me

Over two years, we'll cover Complex numbers, quadratics, sequences, permutation and combination, binomial theory, angles and arcs, trigonometry, functions, limits, calculus derivatives, cartesian coordinate system, locus, straight line, circles, stats, 3d geometry and vectors.

@RaghavSood oh yeaaaaaah! (I am the kind of person who does that kind of thing as a hobby)

In physics, we'll cover laws of motion, electricity, magnetism, vectors, calculus, calorimetry, a bit of nuclear physics, radiation, light, work power and energy, and quite a few more
Hahah yeah. I love all my subjects
Physics and Maths especially.
I'm new to psychology, but I've been working with computers for ages now
Started coding when I was nine, so 7 years ago :P

1:11 PM
I like most of the math and physics topics you mentioned :-)
@RaghavSood good for you!

@RaghavSood that physics sounds epically good! (my fields are atmospheric optics, camera optics and UV radiation).

Optics is touched upon, but not in too much detail
We do lenses and refraction and reflection
And prisms etc.
That's about it though

That's the part of physics I didn't like :-)

very impressive with the coding! Which languages?
@JoshGitlin GASP! ...nah, I don't blame you

@Damien Several. I've used a bunch of web languages and markup languages like HTML, JavaScript, PHP etc. After about 2 years of web I did desktop dev in the .NET framework

1:16 PM
hahaha, it was just difficult for me, much more so than newtonian physics

For the past 2 and a half years or so I've been working on mobile platforms.
Mainly Android

@RaghavSood a fellow androider!

Yes! :D

@JoshGitlin like ray diagrams

Have you ever been to the Android room on chat.SO?
I usually hang around in there

1:17 PM
just wrote my first app a little while ago (for the PhD)
I haven't been in that chat room for ages

I've written a few Android apps
Published a book on Android Augmented Reality last year, and contributing to another Android book this year

@RaghavSood that is seriously impressive!

Agreed

@Damien @JoshGitlin Thank you :)

I was doing nothing impressive at 16 :-)

1:21 PM
At 16, I was in detention

I've never made it to detention thus far :P

I did once when I was 12 :-p

Most teachers seem to like me

I taught C++ at 18 but that was pretty much the biggest thing I did in school. Never published anything!

My computers teacher and I have an unspoken deal that I'll turn up for class once a week, and do something else in the other 3 classes.

1:23 PM
I ws in detention from about 13 to 17.... my teachers liked me, but did not like my rampant nerd-based defiance
sort of like Lisa Simpson turned male and getting elements of Bart
3

@Damien as you know now I'm sure, they have to at least appear to try and maintain some semblance of order amongst their students :-)

I got detention last year once from my Chemistry teacher
But she never followed up on it, so I never went for it :P

haha

lol - what did you do?

Didn't give in this one worksheet

1:26 PM
@JoshGitlin yes, the appearance of order is paramount, especially with a class of shrieking baboons

hahaha

@RaghavSood that's a relief, I thought you were signing your name in phosphoric acid

Heh
They would barely let us into the lab
Maybe one practical class a month

one prac a month???

Now they do it more often, but I don't have chem anymore...

1:29 PM
but as we established, chem sucks... (apologies to jonsca)

He should be doing more psych less chem anyway!
2

@JoshGitlin I agree totally
his ears must be burning... or in this case, his typing fingers
(that would make a good question)

If @jonsca 's ears are burning it's from listening to RUSH's recent stuff, poor Geddy Lee's voice could make anyone's ears bleed these days, so sad!
2

@JoshGitlin the only ear-burning bands out there is 'one direction', and the only direction they should go is south into a north facing leprotic mule

hahahaha

1:34 PM
They could join Justin beiber there

To make it clear, I love Rush, but Geddy isn't aging well :-p
Then again he is about 284 years old :-p

so young, compared to some of the 80's rockers...

haha true

the thing is though, my favourite band Linkin Park, are true rockers, and they care for their fans

I like Linkin Park

1:41 PM
I wrote to them about their new album, 1000 suns, a nice letter - they replied with a hell f a great letter
at a concert, they saw a fan collapse, they stopped playing to make sure she was okay and was seen to

Wow, that's great

a friend of mine knows the lead singer of Metallica

Cool!

so, what are your plans for today? (By the way, it is almost tomorrow here)

@Damien Plans for the day are to be productive and get lots of bugs fixed (which I am failing at so far) and possibly take off in the afternoon for a camping trip. We've had nothing but rain all summer and this weekend is supposed to be nice

1:48 PM
ooh camping? where to?

But if I can get some good work done this morning it will greatly lift my spirits (which are already better than yesterday!)

I am glad to hear that!

@Damien Probably either
Lake Lure is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. As of 2008 the town population was 1,012. Lake Lure was incorporated in 1927, and acquired the lake after which it is named in 1965. History In 1902, Dr. Lucius B. Morse and his brothers Hiram and Asahel purchased around Chimney Rock (within present-day Chimney Rock State Park) for $5,000. They later acquired enough land in the area to bring the total to . Lucius Morse's wife Elizabeth is credited with naming the lake (and the town). In 1925, the Morse family created Carolina Mountain Power Company and funded th...

Mount Pisgah is a mountain in the Appalachian Mountain Range and part of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, United States. The mountain's height is 5,721 feet (1,744 m) above sea level, and it sits approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of Asheville, near the crossing of the boundaries of Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania counties. It is located on the border of Buncombe and Haywood counties, close to the point where Henderson and Transylvania meet them, but not actually within the latter two counties. The mountain is easily accessible via a hiking trail...

oh wow! both look absolutely amazing. Hiking is fun! will you be flipping a coin to choose?

Possibly! I'll be going with a friend so if he has a strong preference we'll likely just do that

1:51 PM
I probably should let you get back to work!

I've ben to Pisgah many, many times, it's beautiful up there
@Damien and I should probably let you get to sleep! :-) It's 11:52PM?
9:52 AM here (EST, UTC-5)

heavens! the time zone thing is creepy sometimes

I know, I agree
Let me know how tomorrow is @Damien, given that you live in my future! :-)

LOL will do, usually it is unicorns and floating pineapples... but that is my medication kicking in

Yey unicorns!

1:55 PM
indeed!
@JoshGitlin anyway, you have a productive day and enjoy camping!

@Damien Thanks! Glad to be able to say I'll see you on here later!

4 hours later…
6:22 PM
@JoshGitlin That's very eerie, as I just bought Clockwork Angels the other day. I know, I'm close to 2 years behind.

7:19 PM
In the past 7 hours I've posted 6 post (questions and answers) and my net change in rep by votes.. +1 .. way to go and I see other post around me being voted.. are my posts that bad? Because if they are of low quality, or not the standard the site needs, I am wasting effort and time. I really don't mind.. It would be a relief in a way. So please tell the truth

7:38 PM
The thing that annoys me the most on Stack is when people answer a question and the OP never bothers to reply.. sometimes they never come back.. but feedback is important.. any way I'm taking my over tired grumpy a$$ out of here..
oops call the police I posted an a and two dollar signs..

8:23 PM
@WhyDoYouThinkThatIsTrue I upvoted one but today has been a very busy day: I am going camping tomorrow to rejuvenate my soul so I have been focused on work today :-)
I find upvotes often are delayed
@jonsca I must say that Clockwork Angels is not my favorite album, because Geddy's voice has just deteriorated. However, I love BU2B and Caravan, and Headlong Fight is f...reaking amazing
All the journeys of this great adventure / It didn't always feel that way / I wouldn't trade them because I made them / The best I could, and that's enough to say / Some days were dark / I wish that I could live it all again / Some nights were bright / I wish that I could live it all again
Totally fits with my philosophy of life. It's an adventure and the good is good because of the bad. Gotta experience everything we can during our time here

1 hour later…
9:50 PM
@JoshGitlin - you better be on your camping trip!
I am sticking to my plan, I have commented with relevant articles on about 4-5 questions. Have been reviewing and reading.

10:47 PM
@Damien I am having a delicious-looking home cooked meal of chicken spaghetti tonight then leaving for Mount Pisgah tomorrow morning! :-D
also, wow, I'm getting all the stars today lol

11:04 PM
@JoshGitlin I like BU2B already, but I'm still in the "playing in the background so I don't know the names of the songs yet" stage hehe I will definitely give Headlong Flight a deeper listen, though. Sounds very Peart -- I have had "Travels on the Healing Road" on my Kindle for a while, but I haven't read it yet. He's gone through some real tragedies....
Geddy still wails, I think, but I was embittered by his Twitter demeanor during the time when he only had a few hundred followers after he first got on. He was acting like he had too many followers to reply to people tweeting at him.

11:31 PM
Oh he has always wailed, lol. But now he can't hit the notes anymore :-/
And Headlong Fight has a freaking amazing drum roll that just keeps going and going and going... like a wave crashing in. LOVE IT. SO MUCH! =b
If my phone's battery holds out I will play it right now :-) then dinner, catch you guys later!
