@EriktheOutgolfer fun fact: they say KEI was ambidextrous - he could write on the blackboard with either hand and he often switched them

@ngn Had a professor in college who did that, it was very unnerving
She'd write stuff in black with her left hand and highlight them in red with the right
My brain would probably short-circuit if I tried that myself

@ngn @J.Sallé My father used to teach engineering students writing formulas with his right hand while drawing graphs with his left hand — simultaneously.

@Adám See, I can't even comprehend how that's possible.

@Adám that's what we call ambidexterity, yeah

My left hand is as useful as a leaky boat: I only use it when it's completely necessary

4:00 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer Isn't it more than that?

@J.Sallé ...so you type with only one hand?!

I read somewhere there are multiple levels of ambidexterity, iirc.

@J.Sallé Yeah, mine too, although I used to play the violin, where the melody is made by the left hand (not the right, like on piano).

@EriktheOutgolfer no. I think typing and cooking are the two thinks my left hand is actually useful for

@Adám there are some more words for that over here:

Q: What is the action of writing with both hands simultaneously called?

vickyaceI can write with both my hands so I am ambidextrous. But it means adept and deft in using both the hands equally. So if someone was exhibiting their skill of ambidexterity by writing something with both their hands simultaneously, what would this piece of action be called? Is there a word for it?...

4:02 PM
@Adám I'm learning to play the trumpet, which thankfully only uses the right hand for pitch

@Adám ...and couldn't put the violin on your other shoulder?

@EriktheOutgolfer that'd be so much harder to use the bow though
It's the same as a guitar, I believe? Using the "main" hand to pluck/bow the strings and the other hand to form the chords

@EriktheOutgolfer For some reason, right-handed people play like that. Left-handed people mostly use mirrored violins (and so again play the melody with their "weak" hand).

@Adám wth is "mirrored violins"
isn't it like saying a "reversed palindrome"?

@EriktheOutgolfer the strings are set "upside down"

4:06 PM
@EriktheOutgolfer @={≡} → {≡}=@

@EriktheOutgolfer No, because since each string has a tone, if you just turn it around, the first string will be the highest tone instead of the lowest

@J.Sallé Not the only difference. The bridge (thingy holding up the strings) isn't symmetrical either. Not to mention the whole shoulder assembly.

@Adám Ah, I see. Never played the violin, but I assume it's pretty close to a guitar
The whole shoulder assembly is pretty different though, that's right.

heck, I've seen that violin players always tilt their heads by too much, surely something can be developed to prevent the need for that can't it?

@EriktheOutgolfer The head isn't supposed to be tilted at all, just turned sharply to the violin side. It is technically possible to play without shoulder assembly, but it isn't comfortable, and may sound duller.

I can't wait to go to the opera again

I don't know to which SE I should move this conversation. Any ideas?

Music Practice and Theory?

ngn
@Adám the "APL Orch...estra"

@cairdcoinheringaahing I thought of that, but it began with the whole ambidextrous thing. Indeed, the subject here isn't music per se, other than as an example of left-vs-right.

there should be an SE chat room where to move off-topic conversations :p

4:24 PM
@dzaima trash?

@Adám but...it's noise that is moved there
like somebody posting "lol" 10 times in a row or so

39 messages moved from The APL Orchard

wow, what an inactive chat room

ngn
@Adám this is supposed to be a room about health...

4:41 PM
@ngn Ambidexterity is physiology, so I figured it was close enough. And it's so inactive that it probably won't bother anyone.
@EriktheOutgolfer Yeah, when I move questionable content, I prefer inactive rooms.

ngn
@Adám ok

Off-topic is in the eye of the beholder room owner[s] :)
