Q: Merging (combining) tables of graph relationships (2-mode to 1-mode network)

Cameron MurrayI have some data of corporate board members in Australia in excel format here (Dropbox public link). It is the data behind this graph. The first worksheet is of all the vertexes (directors and companies with a unique ID for each, and a market capitalisation to use for weighting the size of verte...

If the user claims them to be sensitive data, I can snuff it out

@GraceNote He says that he is going off line right now
in the last sentence
those are real people and money

Well, here's what we can do. You can do a simple edit to rename all the potentially sensitive data in the post to something less revealing. Then after 8 hours, we'll confirm the user's prerogative and if the action is a full removal, I will eliminate the revision.

@GraceNote I thought about that, but he is linking an excel file with all the data. And that file is needed to answer the question. So, if I edit that the question is unanswerable and pointless

1:08 PM
@belisarius This is why I can't just eliminate the revision right now without the author's consent, as it were
It may be that all our hands are tied at the moment

@GraceNote Ok. Thanks. Let it be.
@GraceNote sorry for the inconvenience

It's not an inconvenience at all

@belisarius Here now. I'm with Grace's suggestion.
(Reminds me of that first-person scene question...)

@J.M. Ok. That are important ppl, from an important company. It's a shame we don't know if they are aware of this exposure. Imagine your name and income (or any other financial figure about yourself) listed here
Hi unpingable toad!

@belisarius I'd cry foul myself, but our genius here does not seem to be aware of things like "data sanitation"...

1:17 PM
@J.M. I only hope all that data is in the public financial records of their company, because if it isn't there ...

Hey Hypnokröte, it seems to be the first-person scene view situation all over again...

So I should now ask a question with Beethoven in an Excel sheet?

@belisarius ...then the fecal matter hits the rotor.

@J.M. how poetic
@ℛ.ℳ Sorry, I'm missing the joke

Q: Implementing a first person view of 3D objects in a scene

ℛ.ℳI've created the following scene with a Chinese-style building surrounded by trees, and a horse and a rabbit grazing on the grass in Mathematica (don't ask me why there's a bust of Beethoven in there...). The Chinese-style roof was created using J. M.'s equations in this answer. The code to creat...

oh, yeah
:)
Should we call WikiLeaks?

@belisarius Assange is still busy with other crap, IIRC. :)

@J.M. He has been that kind of busy for the last ten years

1:36 PM
@J.M. Thanks. =)

@belisarius The morphometric thingie?

@J.M. yup
it's tricky

Lauren Gundrum on September 26, 2012

Windows 8 officially launches on October 26th, and it’s already generating quite a few questions on Stack Overflow.  So when Microsoft approached us about sponsoring an app development contest, we thought it was a great idea.

Today we’re announcing Apptivate.ms, a Windows 8 App Development Contest sponsored by Microsoft.

The contest has two parts:

A Developer Contest for people interested in writing applications

A Reviewer Contest for people interested in reviewing and voting on apps

You can participate – and win prizes – in both categories, so even if you aren’t interested in developing your own app you can still participate by helping others by reviewing their submissions. …

@SjoerdC.deVries I'm certain I voted to close when it was a rant and there was no answer yet. Belisarius' comment had several upvotes and it had quickly gotten about 3 votes to close, IIRC. The comment solved OP's problem and he thanked both belisarius and Oleksandr too within about an hr or so. At that point in time, NC was the right choice, because a rant is not constructive and the answer wasn't posted.
In light of stevenvh's answer, I've edited the question to something worth keeping and have reopened it.

@ℛ.ℳ OK, thanks for the clarification. I should have thought of looking in the edit history.

Q: Badge suggestion: HATER, LOVER, and FAIR AND BALANCED

Evan CarrollI wanted to suggest three new badges: HATER: If you've downvoted any one person more than 20 times. LOVER: If you've upvoted any one person more than 20 times. FAIR AND BALANCED: If you've upvoted AND downvoted one person more 20 times UP and DOWN. What do you think? Then we would finally kno...

@ℛ.ℳ How he manages to have still 620 rep points? You do lose rep when you are downvoted, do you?

@halirutan the more egregious ones get deleted... 10k on Meta Stack Overflow would be a lot of fun

@ℛ.ℳ This guy has really guts

A: 6 simple tips to get Stack Overflow reputation fast

Evan CarrollI'm thinking about writing a book focusing mostly on the strategy of getting rep on Stack Overflow. Here is a sneak preview. I want to see how much demand is out there for this. I think SAMs might be convinced to publish it. The real version will have to be like 200 pages, so I'll have to write ...

@halirutan heh, he's a known troll. I believe at one point, Jeff Atwood hunted him down online and called his home phone to make sure that it was in fact a real person... apparently the level of trolling was unbelievable

Alo

hola

@ℛ.ℳ Yes, I've read the message about Jeff calling him and taking him for a coffee or something like that.

@ℛ.ℳ your nick got classy while I was away

@Rojo but no one can ping me now :(

7:46 PM
@ℛ.ℳ aehmm ping?

ok, except if it's a direct reply or they copy paste the unicode

@ℛ.ℳ well, that makes it even more classy
You will only be pinged for important matters
You are no longer a toad of the poeple

I changed it to something simpler now

I see I missed elections, got out of the top 10 in rep...

@Rojo blame your fellow countryman. He's been burning the tires this month

7:52 PM
I see
On the other hand, my only two answers in these last 19 days got no upvotes yet
so I can't only blame him

out of sight, out of mind

I still don't understand the people that just blurt out what they want to do and add thanks to it... like that makes it a meaningful question!
for example, the stock market data, there is a stock and we need to calculate the period of ascending time and descending time, thanks. — Lei Zhang 18 hours ago

I'm at work, bored, lost focus already, there's no coming back
thanks

I have a CDF demonstration, still in beta, it is on simple particle motion simulation. Basically balls in 2D moving in square and colliding with each others. Here is the CDF link 12000.org/my_notes/mma_demos/particle_simulation/index.htm , currently I only do discrete time collision detection. This is not as good as continouse time, but much less complex. I was wondering if someone like to try it and see if it looks ok.
...You'll notice little bit of balls entering into each others, when the simulation speed is fast, this is becuase collision detection happens after making a move, not before.

Q: Speed and Performance-Tuning tags

Mr.WizardIs the speed tag sufficiently differentiated from the performance-tuning tag to warrant keeping it?

10:55 PM
@rm-rf this guy is incredible
(I like your name change)
so to be clear: this gentleman really exists? he's not just doing this for fun?
@rm-rf as for your previous name: the font you used tends to remind me of this sort of thing
rm -rf looks a bit jarring because a) it's not in monospaced font b) my brain seems to react to it it as it would to a gun with the safety off
but at least it doesn't look like tacky 80s hifi gear!

@acl Apparently so, he exists. As to whether he's not just doing this for fun, it's not exactly easy to divine intent over the Internet...

acl
@J.M. the real estate stuff looks genuine. excellent!

@acl "my brain seems to react to it it as it would to a gun with the safety off" - EYAAAAAAAAA!!!!1!

11:15 PM
@acl yup, he exists. He has a personal hatred towards Jeff and it's funny to see the drama unfold...
@acl hehe, I had an even more nuclear option in this answer and dared the user to try it
> rm -rf --no-preserve-root /
Of course, sudo needed if not already root

Hmm, now both your username and Gravatar are dangerous... :)

:D

acl
@rm-rf there are some very strange people around

@acl ...this is the Wild, Wild Web, my good man...

@Mr.Wizard I see you have chosen a rather unusual toad species...

Too many toad clones... I should close them all as duplicates

@J.M. haha. Change it to "the data are [censored]"

@J.M. The private parts were not private enough for storing it, so he keeps it in the pubic zone.
