Is there an easy way to diff between two Mathematica code extracts that ignores indentation and spacing?
(and line breaks most importantly)

@KraZug in mma?

A: Comparing Mathematica expressions like diff

Leonid ShifrinImplementation The following implementation is based on expression serialization and SequenceAlignment built-in function. The idea is to break expressions into constituent parts, then align these part sequences, and then determine the positions where the expressions are different. The auxiliary...

Maybe.

Can someone please tell me how to make this list {{a1, a2}, {b1, b2}, {c1, c2}, {d1, d2}, {e1, e2}} from this list {{a1, a2}, {{b1, b2}, {c1, c2}, {d1, d2}}, {e1, e2}}. I think that Flatten with second argument might do the trick, but I am not sure how to do that.

@Moonwalk Flatten it down completely and use Partition to rebuild the tuples.

@halirutan Thanks! I will do that.

@Kuba, in anything.

1:36 PM
In particular, I was trying to compare between a piece of code copied from Mathematica and a piece that I had edited in IDEA, which I'd changed the spacing and line breaks etc on.

@KraZug Maybe turning both pieces into their FullForm string and look at this difference?

@KraZug Or you could ReadList[file, Hold[Expression] and compare using linked solution.

I was hoping for something like a full diff tool, where I can see both side by side and differences highlighted. I did use an online one which would ignore whitespace but not line breaks

@KraZug Have you tried IDEA's diff?

@halirutan, no, didn't realise there was one.

1:49 PM
@KraZug Use Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Insert to create a new scratch file
Copy your first code there, then create another scratch file for the second code.
If you select the portion of code an press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Insert, IDEA will create a scratch file from this portion automatically.
Then you see on the left in the project view (Alt + 1, if it is not open) the two files
Select both and press Ctrl+D or right-click with the mouse and "Compare Files"

@halirutan, thank you, that is exactly what I was after

@KraZug I hope you are using the beta-release of the Wolfram IntelliJ plugin?

@halirutan, I'm using a version of the plugin, it might be an older version

2:07 PM
@KraZug OK. The versions < 3 are breaking down in newer IDEA versions. So it's worth using the new beta.

Ok, I'll make sure I update. My IDEA has been bugging me to update

@KraZug Just download the latest Community edition and replace your old one.

Ok, I will do
Any other really useful features I should know about as well as the diff tool?

Q: Finding duplicates

KubaPeople often ask me*, "Kuba how come you can so quickly find duplicates? It appears tough in this syntax rich environment." If a question feels like a duplicate as a one that was already answered, it probably is. Here is how you can speed up searching for a duplicate:** Efficient querying with...

Well, is there any information about that new functions about 11.2?

@yode 11.2?
Do you mean 12?

@xzczd, I have found my code for the case where I needed to include ghost points in my method of lines, can we create a chatroom to discuss?

5:57 PM
@KraZug ghost points? sounds spooky

@KraZug Let's disscuss in this room: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/88018/…

@kuba You think it's possible to find all the MMA functions that haven't had any questions asked about them? The inverse of duplicate searching ;)

Let's talk Stephen Wolfram into a "Live CEOing: M.SE Takeover" session, where we raise long-standing issues and make suggestions for features we want (i.e. not enhancements to WordCloud) :) :)

@ChrisK lol I was thinking something along the same lines...

I bet @Szabolcs could have his very own episode

@CarlLange admittedly has had good luck getting interesting questions answered on the streams
I mean better than talking to Stephen would be talking to actual developers
I just tried to fast-forward through the stream that is playing in real time -___-
Clearly I don't watch many of these

8:16 PM
@ChrisK, shall someone suggest it in the chat then?

@KraZug we'd need to suggest it in a way that they'd be more amenable...
Maybe something like a Q/A session for some long-standing issues the general community is concerned about?

@KraZug IDK, maybe we could compile a list of desired features / areas for improvement and go from there

well if we had a designated session in mind, then we could organise a list.

Yeah, he tends to be quite good at responding to the chat.
I suspect they might be amenable to a Q&A livestream if you framed it the right way

9:45 PM
@CarlLange That would imply knowing what is the answer to all unanswered questions, wouldn't it? :)
