guys , let's suppose you have an image from an anime and you want to use mathematica to detect the edges and transform the image as if it was drawn with a pencil ( no additional colors, only grey/black contours on a white sheet) with smooth lines , how do you do it? best thing i could do was GaussianFilter[

Using bill s's solution here. Looks pretty good.
Actually, the filter he implemented is now a built in function known as LocalAdaptiveBinarize, so that could also be used. It has some parameters that affect what the result will look like, it might be worth it to experiment.
