Q: On removing community-wiki status

R.MThis answer was originally made "Community Wiki" (CW) by the OP when he posted it and the CW status was removed by a moderator recently to reward the OP. I disagree with this action, especially because it was done without any form of community consensus and moderators should not be arbiters of wh...

Let's start a flame war about this one. This site is so peaceful ... :D

2:04 AM
@belisarius Okay, but I think your wrong to start a flame war, and I'll continually inform you of this of the weeks and months to come. EVERY CHANCE I GET!
(Good enough?)
@yoda Michael Pilat finally got his silver, also.
@yoda I don't spend a lot of time over there. I pop in maybe twice a day, flag to migrate if needed, and go on my way. In fact, I've seen other users spend a lot more time over there, including some of our up and coming users here. That and @belisarius, you'd think he'd just go away at some point. :P

@rcollyer Fair enough for a starter
@rcollyer I follow a few tags in SO. But the contents of those have been cannibalized by other boutique sites ...

@belisarius What are you saying: we're a boutique? Do you think we do people's hair here?!?
(Better?)

@rcollyer O my! You are not being enough jerky! Is that the better you can do?

@belisarius I was going to say that at least you haven't used that foul program MatLab, like that slimy little urchin @yoda does, but I was wrong.

2:20 AM
Now, calling Yoda names is not funny anymore ... everybody does

I thought I'd jump on the band-wagon.
Communities that bully together stick together ...

@rcollyer Yeah! A little bullying is all that we need to deserve graduation.

Exactly. The school kids do it, why can't we?

@rcollyer I have a teenager in the house. Don't dare to mention it again!

is he a heavy mathematica user ?

2:26 AM
@belisarius Sorry. I will try harder next time. Unless yoda's present of course ...
@newprint who? yoda?

@rcollyer :DDDD

Quick Question about precision calculations

Sure. what have you got?

1+1=2.0
for example

I am reading mathematica cookbook
"You can control precision within a complex calculation (without using N[] on every
intermediate result) by changing these values; however, you should only do so
within a Block (a local context)."
This values are {$MinPrecision, $MaxPrecision}
and he gives an example of of two calculations
within the Block and without the Block
and results are different

2:30 AM
@newprint Do you need to learn about precision managing now, or is it just curiosity?

It is first chapter of the book, I might as well learn it now + I will be doing project that involves high precision calculations

Have you run the examples, or are the results your quoting from his?

SetPrecision[(1 + Exp[Sqrt[2] + Sqrt[3]])/ 2 ^ 25, 32]

@newprint Advice: it's a slippery terrain. Don't work on it unless you have a use case at hand. You'll quickly forget what you learn

and the second example is Block[{$MinPrecision = 32, $MaxPrecision = 32}, SetPrecision[(1 + Exp[Sqrt[2] + Sqrt[3]])/ 2 ^ 25, 32]]
(both examples came from the book)

2:35 AM
And, what is your concern with the results? The last two digits?

Ye, they are different 7.226780742612584668840452114476 vs 7.2267807426125846688404521144759
why ??? Is it because the intermediate calculations have different precisions ??

Right. The difference lies in the first being rounded up by one digit (59 goes to 6).
@newprint I don't know.

"For example, compare the difference between a calculation
with automatic precision for intermediate results to the same calculation
with fixed precision (obtained by making $MinPrecision == $MaxPrecision)." directly from the book

@newprint Add // Trace after each line and compare the intermediate calcs

so I guess the example without block uses automatic precision and the one in a block uses "SetPrecision"

2:40 AM
@newprint Have you tried setting $MinPrecision to 32 outside of the block?
@newprint I don't think so. They both use SetPrecision, and it isn't until that is executed that any precision is needed as (1 + Exp[Sqrt[2] + Sqrt[3]])/ 2 ^ 25 is kept algebraic (not numerical) until that point. I think the issue is one of display, but I may be wrong.

Honestly, no. But my guess it will be equivalent to result obtained in second calculations
and what is "automatic Precision" ???
is it $MachinePrecision ?

@newprint running Precision on the two results gives 31.5935 and 32..

so the second example is "truly" 32 digits

While setting $MinPrecision = 32 does the same thing as the Block construct. Interesting.
@newprint exactly.

Hm ..... very strange and confusing results. Both are set to the same precision, but one rounds off the last two digits.

2:51 AM
it only seems to matter if rounding is required, see what happens when you use 5 instead of 32.
4 doesn't work either ... nor does 15 which would have a 5 at the border
seems like a good question for the main site.

ye, I will probably post it.

It may give you better insights than what I'm finding.

I will keep reading the chapter, maybe they have better explanation later on
Thank you for help !!!

maybe. I'd post it anyway, so if you do find the answer you can get credit for it.
@newprint not a problem.
Good night.

3:13 AM
@all for good measure, I decide to look at one or two more graduated sites, more out of curiosity at this point then anything else, especially as we are going to graduate soon. Check out the users on SharePoint. We have more high rated users than them, and a little under a third total users. We compare favorably until Ask Different with the obvious exceptions of Science Fiction and Fantasy and Electrical Engineering in terms of high level users. I can see why the agreed to allow us to graduate.
Although, when we graduate some of us will be getting another gold badge: Founder. To bad they're not worth actual money ...

4:22 AM
@rcollyer I didn't even notice that. Actually, a lot of people will. We have a very good ratio of conversion of followers and committers to site members. And more than the usual percentage of "fulfilled commitments": 31% and rising.
We are very close to having 4 out of 5 "green" in our Area 51 stats. (Just a few more questions a day - it has been trending up the last few days - and a few more visits.)

9:28 AM
Hi @Heike @Eli

Hi @Szabolcs
@Szabolcs Nice. Time to start writing stuff.

@Heike Still thinking about writing a blog post? I'd love to have a post about your word cloud implementation

@Szabolcs I am. Are you still thinking of writing a post yourself?

@Heike Yes, but not right now. I will be travelling for 10 days or 2 weeks. Need to sort out some bureaucracy at home. I'm leaving on Wednesday.

@Szabolcs Are you going on a holiday?

9:35 AM
I am looking at the WordPress settings and trying to figure out how things work. It's possible to add users who can write and publish posts. It's possible to write a post but not publish it right away.
No, no, not a holiday, just sorting out some paperwork, new ID card, hopefully pick up my diploma, stuff like that.

@Szabolcs Who will be moderating the blog site?

So it looks like I can create a user for you, @Heike, and you can start working on a post. It can be published when it's time, but you can keep writing, making edits, saving draft versions right now.

@Szabolcs That always takes up more time than I would like.
@Szabolcs That would be nice.

@Heike The blog was just created, and now I have an admin account. I can add other people. There are different access levels (i.e. full access or write posts only)
@Heike You can mail me the email address you'd like to use, together with a (lowercase) username that'll be visible on the blog.

@Szabolcs Will the email address be publicly visible?

9:39 AM
@Heike No, it won't be visible to readers. Only to blog admins.

@Szabolcs In that case you can use my normal email address.

@Szabolcs Although I didn't post to the discussion on meta about the blog, I would be very happe to have an account to write posts.

@Szabolcs Yes that's right. Do you still have my email address?

@Heike Yep.
@halirutan I need the same info from you: an email (won't be visible to readers) and a lowercase username (visible). Just email them to me,
@Heike Check your email and see if it worked.

@Szabolcs You can use the email from here and my username "halirutan"

9:47 AM
@halirutan I can't see the email you used on the SE site ... I'm not a moderator. This account will be separate from SE accounts. But you can always email me your choice.

@Szabolcs It works by the looks of it

@Szabolcs Oh, I thought it is visible.

10:28 AM
Here's a new chat room for blog related discussions:

10:43 AM
@Szabolcs Did I see this right, that we have neither code block highlighting nor LaTeX support on the blog?

@halirutan Code blocks should work. To use MarkDown, you will need to switch to the HTML view. I will need to look into MathJax support ... (after lunch)

3 hours later…
1:51 PM
On area51 there is a proposal for "Alien Language and Useage". The description is "For alien from other planets or earthmen who interested in languages in extraterrestrial civilizations". I wonder if the bad grammar and spelling mistakes are on purpose.

2:05 PM
@Heike brilliant

2:16 PM
@Szabolcs Nice!

2 hours later…
3:59 PM
@Heike It's now closed, but I love the one question it had. Brilliant.

acl
@rcollyer that looks appropriate

I have to question Area51's "hotness" rating. How does the Great Outdoors rate as hotter than us?
@acl and likely syntactically valid ... now if we could understand the syntax

R.M
@rcollyer aw man... you still looking at those? We are so low on that list that I wouldn't rule out quantization noise affecting the ordering :P

4:20 PM
@RM actually, we're only on the second page (using the full 50, of course). But, I was curious, as it had been awhile, and so I looked.

4:40 PM
@MrWizard, I'm sure you want a blog account too. Just email me your preferred username and email address, and I'll send an invitation.

@Szabolcs so what was decided re: rtfm and first hit in documentation type questions? Close? Leave open for new users to answer? Answer with the obvious? (this is re: the kmeans question)

Q: Do we need CDF support for the blog?

SzabolcsNow that we have a blog, and we can start writing the first post, the question comes up: do we need CDF support on the blog? Theoretically it should be possible to add CDF support relatively easily because there is a CDF plugin, but we need to list some good reasons before this will be given to...

5:36 PM
@RM Well, it seems to me that the most popular opinion was: questions are what you make of them. It's possible to have a great answer to a not so great question. So let's leave it open and give it a chance. Additionally, it's probably not bad to have Google point people here when they search for Mathematica k-means. To to be honest, this is the third hit only.
The first two hits are doc pages, again showing the complete lack of effort on the part of the OP.
@yoda I'm sorry, I missed your messages. I had a headphone plugged in and also cooking ...

R.M
@Szabolcs That sounds good to me. Illustrative examples of typical usage would be good additions to the documentation, which can be dry and vague at times

Q: Running the Mathematica.SE blog

SzabolcsToday we got a blog, and for now I have an admin account. This post serves both as an announcement and for checking with the community on how to run the blog. How it could work Make sure you check the chatroom for blog-related discussions! It'll be easier to keep up to date with blog related ...
