@WorldEngineer I definitely want to. Like I said, school and sports have been getting in the way, but the summer will change that.

@JimmyHoffa But this is multiple machines... sigh We're wondering if something in the (ancient) sound drivers is messing with the (ancient) power management.

Should this question be moved to Meta, or Area 51 ? programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/199532/…

@rwong not in its current format... I don't really see it fitting anywhere as it stands.

Writing a cover letter falls into the 'unfun' category of things to do. Its speaking HR language rather than programming. A whole different set of nuances and things to be aware of while writing... and there is no static checking on them, you only get a runtime error rather than compile time errors.

There is no unit testing of cover letters. There is, however, A/B testing. A job advertisement is an RFP with a faulty requirements analysis. Candidates compete to answer with their own analyses. Perhaps candidates should hand-sign each cover letter to attest to the authenticity and validity of their cover letters.

@JimmyHoffa its not bad, just I can see the writing on the wall where I work. This document has been circulated amongst the programmers... we're fairly much a 10 for 10.

So, I've got a job... given the circumstances, I can grantee that unless I severely mess up (like showing up too highly on web usage because of auto updates to chat.SE), I can remain there. Its more a question of "do I want to?"

Then you've got the dead sea effect that is becoming more and more obvious in some departments. And guess what, when they have trouble, they bring the A team from what they were doing and make them do something even less fun (to rescue a late project and start off with mandatory overtime for the foreseeable future).

There is some degree of absurdity in what they are looking for (lets hire an iOS programmer for $20/hour, if they are 6 minutes late, or take a lunch that lasts 1h 7m, they get in trouble... and you've got to punch out to look at the vending machines and take out your own trash... no, I'm not kidding.)...
