Guys, There are the algorythms and the data structures. At this level, is there any other object?

@GustavoBandeira what do you mean?

user20683
object has specific connotations here

@World What are the possible conotations?

user20683
Objects generally mean specific constructs that hide data, have inheritance and are polymorphic. You can have data structures and algorithms that work with or without these

7:58 PM
@WorldEngineer @WorldEngineer No, I mean, Imagine the set of fruits: {Orange, Apple, Lemon, ...}

user20683
@GustavoBandeira what about them?

If we have a set: {Algorythms, Data structure, ...}. Are there other elements on this set?
I hope you understand what i mean.

I don't understand what you're trying to get a set of

user20683
the set of stuff that's on topic here?

Are these two things elements of some set?
Sorry if i'm saying meaningless things, my natural languange is portuguese, then i guess i can't express it too well.

@GustavoBandeira that's probably a question you need to ask in math.stackexchange's chat

user20683
they could be members of an arbitrary set sure

8:17 PM
@GustavoBandeira I don't think they're part of the same set. An algorithm can be defined as a step-by-step procedure for calculating something, while a Data Structure is a particular way of storing data.
They seem totally unrelated to me

@Rachel I was thinking "what are the basic programming structures?"
Like: "Programming can express n things, what are these things?"

@GustavoBandeira I'm not sure that I would call an algorithm a programming structure. To me, an algorithm is an abstract concept, not really a real object, while a data structure would be a real class object that represents data
Hrrm perhaps you mean Design Patterns? They are patterns used to as a template when programming software

@GustavoBandeira If you are looking for a lowest level definition of what computing is capable of you would probably want to look up Turing Machine or Computability.

If one'd like to conduct a research of, by and for the programmers' community how should one go about getting folks from programmers.SE to contribute?
Since a lot of people struggle with selecting a programming language for their upcoming project or new venture idea, I thought it'd be a good idea to gather the 'criteria for selection' and then community's 'scoring' of a language against each of the criteria (relative scoring only, absolute if the need be)
I would collect that data (which would be open to start with) and create a simple decision making model to help folks rank order the various criteria (that they choose) and help rank order the programming language choices w.r.t. them. (not simple weight * score but a bit more mathematically inclined) - and have it opened up for all to use?
Oh, primarily focusing on the top 10-15 languages in the TIOBE index to start with...

OK so I have a friend who wants to sell me his old copy of his Thinking in Java (3rd edition). I'm gonna get it off of him anyway (5 bucks) but will I be mis-informed by reading it. I've never learned Java (or similar) so I can't judge it for myself. Any ideas?
