5:03 PM
@enderland killed the conversation

user114359
and just look at his face... that smug smile...

@KitZ.Fox yay

after seeing Watchmen, I always imagine the Comedian whenever I see enderland's avatar

@ThomasOwens you're three and a half hours late! no wonder you only got an "on par" notation ;)

user114359
@Ixrec hah! So I'm not the only one who thinks that

5:08 PM
My last job, my boss expected his team to be spectacular engineers (we were all Sr. by title and practice), so he said that is simply what is expected and always put everyone in the "Meets expectations" category. Meanwhile, the other teams who were frankly terrible at thier jobs has managers who took the tact that "It makes me look better if my employees are great!" so they gave their employees all glowing above-average style reviews. Kinda pissed me off.

@JimmyHoffa still haven't tried it cos not at home but l8r!

Spoelsky's article on performance reviews is dead on regarding this
They just fuck shit up. Period.

also guy driving 1 hour to buy a computer off CL from me is weird

Who's this "Spoelsky" fellow then?
@enderland s/driving 1 hour to buy a computer //
@enderland s/ot/to/

I was told in my last performance review that I was a bit hard on myself, to which I replied I thought I was expected to improve, and I thought I did, so I thought I "met expectations"

5:09 PM
just a few minor typo fixes ;p
@Ixrec smooth talking, or dumb?

I have no idea

:D
Oh, Spolsky.

why am I always convinced there's an e in there? Whatever. I'm sticking with it. Spoelsky from now on.

@JimmyHoffa one of my previous bosses asked me about what would "motivate" me and I basically told him "interesting work, only"
money is nice, but less motivating at a certain point...

user114359
5:11 PM
@enderland depends: is it enough money to buy a bigger house with an in-ground pool?

@enderland agreed. I've always openly told managers I want to make my bills without concern, and otherwise money is simply not a motivator for me. You'll have to do other things to keep me engaged (and if I'm not making my bills without concern, then I'll be looking for another job altogether..)

of course, once your bills are paid, it's easy enough to increase the amount of bills you have to pay and thus money is a motivator again

"Sir, I'm really interested in this position because I want to Scrooge McDuck into a swimming pool of cash"

I'd be motivated by earning twice as much and having other people do more of my work :D

@Snowman I hear "in ground pool" and think "ughhhh, maintenance and more expenses"
@JimmyHoffa yup, exactly

5:17 PM
@whatsisname yes, though I think I've managed to handle such relatively well considering I've been making nearly the same for about 7 years
@enderland I just think insurance liability and eff that.

user114359
@enderland and I think "I'm going to have one hell of a pool party with my friends"

hah, decided to take a look at all the inevitable downvotes on my JSON API answer after working up the courage for a while
+4/-0 wtf
u pplz crazy

wasn't me

which answer
also adobe pdf's search speed is miserable

@whatsisname s/search speed//

5:31 PM
> also adobe pdf's is miserable
nope

yep

your spelling is never going to gain sentience, that's for sure ;)
...did you see how organic that joke was?
I carbon believe it

@PreferenceBean seriously, I used to be a very good speller, but the past year or two I'm struggling more and more... Pretty sure I've started the inevitable decline into getting dumber (or those many blows to the head as a youth are finally catching up with me) :/ fk life sometimes

probably alcoholism
you should drink more
and on that bombshell, I'm going home. TA TA

user41796
too much blood in the alcohol stream can be problematic

5:34 PM
@PreferenceBean whatever you say Zaltor the Merciless
@GlenH7 truth be told, I really don't drink over much. I have in previous times handled stress poorly and drank more than was perhaps wise, but never too crazy, and not even bad in recent years

user41796
Yeah, I'd say that reinforces the idea of too much blood in the alcohol stream then...

He's drank so much he forgot how much he was drinking.

@Ampt 2 drinks means 2 bottles right?

user41796
@JimmyHoffa That's what they put handles on bottles for

@GlenH7 no, those are jugs! I know the difference! You're trying to trick me! Those only count as bottles on Jug Thursday! Think I don't know that... I get no respect

user41796
5:51 PM
Used to be only on jug Thursday. Then they dropped the "Thurs" part off of there.

user114359
6:10 PM
So, I just learned about this:

user114359
Mighty No. 9 (Japanese: マイティーナンバーナイン, Hepburn: Maiti Nanbā Nain) is an upcoming action-platform video game in development by Comcept, in conjunction with Inti Creates, and published by Deep Silver. The creation of the game was based on the online crowdfunding website, Kickstarter, and incorporates heavy input from the public. Mighty No. 9 very closely resembles Keiji Inafune's most successful work, Mega Man, in both gameplay and character design, and is considered as its spiritual successor. The minimum Kickstarter goal for Mighty No. 9 was successfully funded on September 2, 2013, after only two...

6:21 PM
is it friday yet. for some reason today I just am ready to be done

user41796
erm....

@enderland no :(

6:38 PM
> WE ARE BEGINNING TO ACQUIRE THE DIRECT AND DELIBERATE CONTROL OVER THE EVOLUTION OF ALL LIFE FORMS ON THE PLANET.

@enderland wat

it's really tempting to just email them anyway just to see what they respond with

@whatsisname BRB sending my resume, address, DOB, Mothers social security number, 401k login information and 1st born child to gain employment by the future leaders of the world!

> hello,

i am interstied in helping take over the wrold. i am good at programming and can help, ohw can i start?

user41796
Because nothing says "keeping overhead low" like advertising for programmers on CL does.

6:42 PM
@GlenH7 you must be one of the people/countries/etc that don't get it
> Many countries and companies
just
don't
get it.

I've picked up several gigs on craigslist over the years

this one is pretty sketchy
all the gigs I've worked have been for companies that need software written for them but don't have enough to warrant hiring someone full time, and don't want to work with consultancy shops

and of course those ads encompass about 0.01% of what actually gets posted
I don't care what someones website looks like as long as their checks clear
if you think the website looks good, check out this helyxzion.blogspot.com

What is PHP POO?

user114359

Q: PHP OOP - Multiple get vs array

DacramashMight seem quite simple, but I am starting to learn PHP POO and I would like to know what would be the best practice for an object with many values between storing them in an array and storing them in multiple variables with multiple get functions to get each of these values.

@Snowman A redundant term for PHP.

user41796
@Snowman If you have to ask ...

user114359
@Ampt found the answer I was fishing for

user41796
Oh my god, wow. Thanks a lot, you've made the use of array much clearer to me now lol... All this time that I have been using arrays wrongly, I actually never knew that arrays were supposed to be sequential lists :) — Dacramash 4 hours ago

user41796
6:49 PM
Can't tell if that person is trolling or not.

user41796
VTD'd anyway.

user114359
@GlenH7 smells like sarcasm

user41796
Yet the OP still selected the "answered' check mark

Doesn't smell like sarcasm to me
I think OP probably doesn't use english as a first language

user114359
@Ampt you're just a sock puppet, you don't have a nose

6:50 PM
@Snowman that's a feature, not a bug.

user41796
7/8ths of a point difference between my current mortgage rate and current refi rates. Hmmmm

get me one too thanks

user41796
Will do

user41796
Pretty certain I can't get an FHA loan at this point. But that moves the spread to 1 & 1/8th, which makes it a no brainer to refi

user55340
@GlenH7 gone now.

7:00 PM
I'm sorry lol @GlenH7

user41796
FHA's apparently require mortgage insurance though

user41796
which offsets the difference in rate

7:58 PM
Friday! Come back here! Argghhh.

it's thursday, right?
YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

@Ampt Shtup!

Checks again just to make sure

user55340
8:17 PM
Arizona is such a nice place to visit.

@Ampt girlfriend still in Arizona?

user55340
@JimmyHoffa ever look at Arizona Highways? arizonahighways.com/photography/photo-archive

8:32 PM
@JimmyHoffa nope, it was just an overnight thing

@MichaelT why would I? I spend enough time looking at Colorado Highways

She came home at 1 in the morning and put her cold paws all over me while I was sleeping.

goddamn you google, how many times am I going to search for "Denver something" and you're going to give me images of other bloody places? That isn't Denver...sunufuh...
Google's going to drive me to friggin bing at this rate

@JimmyHoffa how do you know? Maybe you haven't been to that part of dencer
I hear bings image search works really well. you know. From a friend.

user55340

user114359
8:35 PM

user114359
@JimmyHoffa does that count?

user55340
Because the pictures rarely have highways in them.

@Ampt my phone uses bing, I can't tell a difference from google- works just as well. Also, that bridge looks pretty recognizable, bit the real questionable part is the trees are all wrong; the grass is green etc

user55340
And when they do...

user55340

user55340
@Snowman evil mobile redirect advertising on the page.

8:56 PM
nevermind - he's just looking for planets you could step on to and not die instantly.

@Ampt impossible! A century is basically an instant! Do not step on earth! You're doomed!

does anyone know how it went with Thomas?
not that I'm massively nosey or anything

10:01 PM
How would you refer to the consumable interface of a package or namespace? i.e. the collective interface of a group of classes or objects.

@PeterScott an API (or multiple APIs)

For documentation purposes I'm trying to think of a concise term for it.
Aye, that's what I've been getting too..

user55340
External. Programmer facing.

public "API", another term is "contract"
no screw all that. Time for a new term. You need to call it a Sprocket throughout all your documentation

Ha. Funny.
My concern was about confusion with the main Application's API; which is a collection of resource controllers. Any confusion between the two would be quite perplexing for another developer. @MichaelT's suggestions are interesting.
I might just drop the 'Application' and call it the 'Programming Interface'.

10:10 PM
out of close votes again...
not even trying today!

oh you lot are back
have we all spent the last few hours staring at the screen, wondering why nobody's talking?

nothing work talking about
calling an API a contract is douchey

@PreferenceBean no, some of us were writing code. Probably @MichaelT for instance. Yeah, that's likely the only culprit there...

user55340
The others have gone out on a search party (with booze?) to find out which bus @ThomasOwens was thrown under after asking for a raise.

10:17 PM
Where's @ThomasOwens

dead

I was going to say fired

@whatsisname zah? How? I like Contract for certain specific things (not all API's, just hard-boundary ones like for IPC etc)

@whatsisname If Jimmy likes a term then it's probably wrong and you shouldn't use it
I need a nick for March

contracts are for legal agreements

10:19 PM
and "business logic" is for actual business activity

if someone finding a bug in a your API means you pay huge fines or go to prison, then fine, call it a contract

not the stuff that uses your three-file MVC "framework"

user55340
The March Hare (called Haigha in Through the Looking-Glass) is a character most famous for appearing in the tea party scene in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The main character, Alice, hypothesizes, "The March Hare will be much the most interesting, and perhaps as this is May it won't be raving mad – at least not so mad as it was in March." "Mad as a March hare" is a common British English phrase, both now and in Carroll's time, and appears in John Heywood's collection of proverbs published in 1546. It is reported in The Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner that this proverb is...

@whatsisname eh, I just like it because it makes me sound beyond reproach when I get 3rd parties to agree to an API, and then they bitch about it later on that they want something else/more now and I can just say "You agreed to this contract"

yeah and it's douchey because that's basically lying ;)

10:22 PM
and it's also clear that breaking a contract refers to something that would actually violate the facility of clients
many API's can be changed without breaking a 3rd party's service, but a contract explicitly means: Don't change this, or you will break shit because others have agreed to it

if I change my nose to be a set of eyes I'd be in deep shit
doesn't mean I have a contract with my face

meh. Call it douchey, I think it's worth understanding the distinction between a fungible API and one that should be highly reliable
@PreferenceBean your nose has a contract with your brain. If it start's sending light, your brain is going to freak the fk out

@MichaelT What was that word phrase that's used to describe the text

@JimmyHoffa my nose didn't sign anything. it has no hands!

@PreferenceBean handy

10:25 PM
But the face analogy does have legs

@PreferenceBean you see what I did there?

user55340
Sous rature is a strategic philosophical device originally developed by Martin Heidegger. Usually translated as 'under erasure', it involves the crossing out of a word within a text, but allowing it to remain legible and in place. Used extensively by Jacques Derrida, it signifies that a word is "inadequate yet necessary"; that a particular signifier is not wholly suitable for the concept it represents, but must be used as the constraints of our language offer nothing better. In the philosophy of deconstruction, sous rature has been described as the typographical expression that seeks to identify...

wasn't Heidegger part of the Shinra

user55340
Note that I took Latin (Catholic high school) and was only a class or two away from a degree in philosophy (focus ancient)

10:26 PM
@MichaelT Thank you

hi liri

Hi Beany
miss me?

user41796
> Don't push your luck, kid.

10:34 PM
@GlenH7 :)

seriously though. nicks for march.
perhaps... FaceAnalogyWithLegs

Is the name for you?

user41796
@PreferenceBean "Lightness Races in Orbit" has a nice ring to it.

@GlenH7 ooh nice
how did you come up with that?

user41796
10:37 PM
in'nit though?

user41796
@PreferenceBean Sheer. Genius.

I see

Your famous google Lightness Races in Orbit

user41796
Oh, wouldn't want to be a copycat if someone else already claimed that nick...

awww that just figures
what were the chances o.O

10:39 PM
I think it's someones sisters name

hey, that looks like an incredible person overall

user41796
@PreferenceBean apparently pretty good odds....

(wow, TL has completely ruined those results hasn't it)

i think that web development needs 3 monitors minimum

user41796
@whatsisname 3 30" monitors is a bit excessive

10:41 PM
nonsense

user41796
I ran with 2 of 'em for a bit. Takes up a lot of desk real estate

@PreferenceBean I'm still confused by all that

one monitor for ide/editor, one monitor for your regular browser, and one monitor for another browser where you're testing
seems reasonable

I have 6 24" monitors... not sure what that meanss but it probably means something.

user41796
@DeliriousSyntax Simple enough - Lightness: awesome person. The Lounge: not quite so awesome.

10:42 PM
I think I would very much like 3 30" monitors... In landscape that would be mindbogglingly impossible to use, but in portrait the width wouldn't be too overbearing

user41796
@PeterScott Means you either work in a SCADA or financial environment.

@GlenH7 Wrong

user55340
@whatsisname I worked with laptop +2x 17". It was quite reasonable.

glad to see that completely neutral and unbiased star

user41796
I s'pose I could pin it...

10:43 PM
one monitor is enough. two is ideal.
I've actually never used two monitors for developing anything directly, though I have two on my desk. but they're for different PCs and I never do work work on the left-hand one
I probably use the left-hand one for web research (as well as SO and FB) during the day without realising it

nope. Though at home I have 1 27" 1440p monitor, and it actually works in place of 2 24" monitors very well I've found regarding having nearly the same real estate

I worked with two for a long time. I certainly never needed more, but I've grown to like the acres of screen space.

your pad must be huge
like by the time you've reached the top of your stairs, you're in space

Combined with virtual-desktops I never minimise or cover over a program.

I think there might be a little more to @PreferenceBean Then what I know

10:45 PM
@PeterScott I cover up Whiteboard as often as possible

@PreferenceBean Probably wise.

@DeliriousSyntax Yeah I mean it's not as if anything important happened to me over literally all of my life that you might not know about

VM-ware is the best idea ever

VirtualBox is great

I have window me windows xp kali linux and windows 7 on my VirtualBox

10:47 PM
If it's not a personal question, why XP?
or ME for that matter...

Xp is super simple

ahaha I'd forgotten about this
BarryTheHatchet it is.

user41796
What's "Meany Way"?

user41796
And why would it be bothered?

It wouldn't. And the hash tag is quite clear about that.

10:52 PM
@GlenH7 Perhaps it's bothered because of the unrecognised syntax.

hajj tack

user41796
But if someone feels like they had to state something would never be bothered by something else, doesn't that imply that it could have been bothered?

I think I figured it out PreferencBean is actually Marilyn vos Savant

as long as you don't post my [alleged] email address again you can pretend I'm whoever you want
@GlenH7 Arguably
@GlenH7 Perhaps we should bury the hatch hut

user41796
Is this where I get to say that I can't be bothered with arguing about it?

10:54 PM
Yeah Not doing that again

@GlenH7 Only if you have the courage to speak to me face to face, no fighting [sic]

user41796
#BuryThatchedHut

user41796
@PreferenceBean Oh, I think if I were speaking to you face to face in person then I'd suggest we go find a pub and have a beer. Ought to be an interesting chat.

@GlenH7 Probablement

@JimmyHoffa I've got a 1440p and a 1600x1000 monitor at work now, which is great

11:03 PM
Preference is a famous programmer who lives on her own island off the coast of Germany because she sold her program and website for billions
Done boom figured it all out

user55340
Still not sure that php question was a troll or not. It concerns me if it wasn't a troll.

MichaleT Secret identity is the guy who wrote the book Cosmos and does all the programming for NASA while wearing a blind fold

user55340
Sigh. I remember watching Cosmos when it wasn't a rerun.

@enderland I'm happy with the 27" 1440p, I was uncertain because I've been working with 2x24"1080p monitors since '07 and I had a 23" 720p monitor at home- been working at home a lot more recently since I'm no longer on a team, and it just wasn't good enough. The 27" 1440p however really doesn't leave me wanting at all for the 24s I'm used to

user55340
Even have Vangellis Heaven and Hell.

11:09 PM
I tried watching cosmos. The previews were good, but when I started watching it the video quality was terrible and that caused my ADD to kick in

@JimmyHoffa I have the other one rotated 90 degrees and use it for console output and chat
works well

I still have the entire series on my DVR

"Pants optional when telecommuting." Hmmm, I don't think my boss would like that...

user55340
13 minutes in are the memories.

@DeliriousSyntax Your webcam is obviously pointed too low.

Why 7 downvotes seems like a well formed question

wat

@PreferenceBean BOOM

@RobertHarvey I don't work from home

11:17 PM
@PreferenceBean: ideal is n+1

@PreferenceBean Ah, the irony. If T = E/N doesn't work, then there must be something wrong with the equation.

I honestly feel like everyone here works with some big business have websites which get a couple thousand views a day are well known, while I'm sitting here clueless

@DeliriousSyntax Then your boss has no sense of humor.

@RobertHarvey Probably not I work at a pet store

Writing software?

11:22 PM
@RobertHarvey eh?

What person works around cats and dogs that doesn't have a sense of humor?
(possible dangling modifier)

We don't sell cats and dogs. We sell snakes lizards wallubis(if that's how you spell it) fish and stuff like that

user55340
@DeliriousSyntax I've worked tech support. I've worked QA. I worked at a startup that had its paycheck bounce. I've worked at a company that had 300 (2 devs in IT) people and grew to 12k employees (and no devs in IT). I've worked at a retail company where my code was never seen outside of the company (but does millions of transactions/day). I've worked at a company with 6 developers total. And now I'm in the public sector. It is a long road to follow. Careers last decades. Don't specialize.

wallabies?

There we go @MichaelT a should be famous programmer who seems to know what hes doing. Yeah I know a career isn't just one job it's makeup of multiple jobs like an elevator that takes you to the top or gets stuck or takes you back to floor 1. I wish I was like 20 not 17, so I could just skip the start of going out into the world and starting a career instead I could already be in the process
@PreferenceBean The animals that look like mini kangaroos

11:35 PM
@DeliriousSyntax yeah, but they're not called "wallubis"!

wallabies

Q: Scrum - Dealing with failed sprints and deadlines

thought this would have been posted by Kit when I saw it in HNQ

why does firebug say something is connecting to fbcdn for a split second then hiding the request

when you do what? under what conditions? what firebug settings? what firebug tab? what version firebug? what page of Facebook? what does Wireshark say?

when I refresh
I haven't bothered to fire up wireshark to check

11:43 PM
then I haven't bothered to think about the answer to your question...

lol

wireshark?

I wonder if it's just some other tab doing it

@MichaelT I'll be up in your neck of the woods this weekend... :)

Wait if I go up there to do I get an autograph?

11:49 PM
@DeliriousSyntax for what it's worth you learn things slowly, I was just thinking today how as a junior person I learn a lot - from here, from work, and other htings
there are always people who know more than you and have more experience - if you compare yourself to them you end up missing a lot of important things along the way

@enderland thanks
@enderland Oh and we are all going to meet up in the wisconsin area to go snow boarding right?
Time to get off work later superior programmers

@DeliriousSyntax bai

@PreferenceBean Tschüss
