02:05
hello
Jin
Jin
hi
allo
02:20
such stunning conversation ...
02:36
We try. Clearly.
Jin
Jin
you guys are deep
03:09
@Jin, that conversation was nothing without your input!
Jin
Jin
yay done with theme, almost.
i'm so tempted doing the badges with css3...
right now i'm using an image.. which feels so 2009..
Hmm, speaking as a self-taught programmer who's actually a trained graphic artist who's created a couple fonts himself, I would have to agree about the condensed text...
Jin
Jin
@NSGod I have already removed it. even after I played with letter spacing, it was indeed a bit too narrow.
Ahh... Yeah, generally, condensed versions of fonts are specially created and tweaked to work well, and often applying a horizontal compression to a regular style will be too "thick" if you know what I mean, even if you add extra space between the letters. The font looks like it'd be nice in regular style though
Jin
Jin
03:26
@NSGod yes. especially after I viewed how it rendered on Win...
@NSGod thanks for the input

15 hours later…
18:18
New site design is now live. Any bugs, file them on meta.programmers.stackexchange.com as usual
I just came in here to say I love it!
Brilliant design! Whiteboard style is spot on!
The coffee mug favicon is a nice touch.
Heh, I thought it was the Java icon at first...
How long until the chat icon changes? Or is it a manual thing?
18:24
New design looks great.
Oh hey, there it goes.
@Brant favicons are heavily cached in general
The only thing that looks slightly out of place are the badge icons (bronze/silver/gold).
Jin
Jin
@allon they're supposed to be lil magnet thinggies you put on a whiteboard.
and since everything else is rather flat it'd provide a nice accent
@Jin: Could you make the logo bigger?
18:30
@Jin Oh, I've never seen those.
Jin
Jin
@Brant lol...
@Jin how about making the accepted circle on the homepage "filled"? It feels weird to have it hollow that way
You know, so it draws the eye. Like that.
Jin
Jin
@badp i played with a few ideas, i decided to go with the circle, because that's how people naturally do things on a whiteboard.
fair enough.
Jin
Jin
18:32
people tend to circle to mark something, instead of filling it in
@badp I think it's fine. An accepted answer means very little on p.se anyway. And I agree with Jin, you don't usually color-in shapes on a whiteboard.
Jin
Jin
@Brant you scared me
i thought that was a CSS bug in your screenshot..
shameless plug: with its graduation, programmers.se is now also in notarealquestion.appspot.com
@Jin - wow, fantastic design for the Programmers.SE site. Every bit as good as all your others
Jin
Jin
18:42
@PiersMyers thanks. this theme took as long as the Sketchy one I did. it was fun.
\o/ design!
and \o/ launch
grats!
@Jin What are your other SE designs?
Jin
Jin
@AllonGuralnek stackexchange.com/sites
the ones that don't have the blue "sketchy" icons are the officially launched Stackexchange 2.0 sites
The design is awesome. Thanks Jin.
Site looks great, although I agree with badp that the circle for Accepted Answers looks weird.
18:48
@Jin okay, so the Programmers icon there isn't out of date for just me :)
Favicons are notoriously cached.
@rchern That's from the page Jin linked to.
That's http://stackexchange.com/images/icon/programmers.stackexchange.com, not the favicon
that's the apple-touch-icon.png and it is incorrect on disk. I'm sure @Jin will get to it
Jin
Jin
oops i forgot to update the apple touch..
18:49
@Rachel I quite like the freehand circle, fits in with the overall theme
Jin
Jin
doing it now
Ah right. My bad. Sorry.
Jin
Jin
i left an old version of the apple-touch-icon.png in there..
@Piers it will probably grow on me
I like it too
18:51
@Rachel Freehand circles tend to do that.
Jin
Jin
isn't freeland circle like a meme on Meta.so?
Having it filled would be weird. Then it wouldn't look like someone had circled something of not.
How about a freehand box? :P
what about just putting a checkmark overtop of it?
The only things I don't like is the badges icons. My impression is that they do not match with the rest of the design.
18:52
@Pierre303 Bloodcells
What are they supposed to be?
Same for the "Post Your Answer" or "Add" buttons
Look ma! A freehand drawn freehand filled circle.
Jin
Jin
@Pierre303 buttons need to have higher affordance therefore I made them 3dish. plus on a whiteboard, you'd have magnet pieces than just flat marker drawings and sticky notes.
@Pierre303: They look like those little magnets that come with whiteboards...isn't that what they are supposed to be?
I love the new fonts, except the font for question titles... it seems .. too vertical? I find it hard on the eyes.
Jin
Jin
18:54
but, of course i wasn'g going after the super realistic looking interpration of the magnets.
@Rachel really? it's the same font as the Beta theme..
Oh yeah magnets. I don't have any interesting suggestion to replace them.
@Rachel Does the font look the same as the mockup? Mine looks quite different
@jin: Question titles on the main page?
Jin
Jin
yeah
it's Tahoma
@Nick if by Mockup you mean the image earlier in the chat log, then no it's different
Jin
Jin
18:56
the only difference from the Beta theme is i didn't bold the titles this time
Jin: maybe decreasing the effect of them? So they are more "flat" ? Magnet idea is really nice. It's how they look. But it's probably only me.
It's the bold that makes it look funny. It squishes it together and emphathisis the vertical lines
Jin
Jin
@Pierre303 i say give it a few days, and see how you feel. it always takes a bit to get used to it. but i'm glad you like most of it!
So they look less like bloodcells or dragées
Jin: OK
Jin
Jin
hm to be honest i don't even know how bloodcells look like.
off to googling..
18:58
<- thinks there are an awful lot of opinions on style in here for a room full of coders
Yeah I learn at least a new thing everyday on SO's family websites. Even how a bloodcell looks like ! ;)
Jin
Jin
whoa it does look like bloodcell
At first impression it looked like a checkers piece to me.
Actually the font looks great on IE, it must just be Chrome
19:00
Gold badges are "werters".
werthers sorry.
@Pierre303 mmm, buttery toffee sweets :)
@pier mmm
The background is just brilliant. Jin, who had the whiteboard idea?
@Pierre lol that's exactly what I think when I look at them
Jin
Jin
Meta community did
and Jeff had the same idea too
19:06
That's not a bad thing, werthers are tasty :)
19:16
So the silver badges could be mints; like lifesavers but with the center filled.
Jin
Jin
they all are filled with unicorn urine
2
Is that good or bad
Is that good or... yeah.
Jin
Jin
depends on your taste...
wow, I look at code for ten minutes and I come back to unicorn urine?
wtf?
Jin
Jin
19:19
i don't think i've ever seen this many people in this chatroom before...
I'd say something like "that's the magic of StackExchange!" but I don't think it's really what SOIS, Inc. is going for.
Me neither.... its kind of harming my productivity right now
Is there any part of SE that doesn't harm productivity?
9
SO... they've helped me with some questions that I had spent hours on
Minor suggestion: If the logo down in the bottom right of chat were changed to a vertical version with the /* Programmers */ bit below the illustration, it wouldn't be so squished.
Jin
Jin
19:21
when i get some free time, i'd love to participate in English, Cooking and Gaming SE sites.
@HedgeMage Not yet, but feel free to vote for area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4296 :)
Assuming a) a vertical version exists, and b) http://sstatic.net/programmers/img/logo.png isn't used elsewhere
Jin
Jin
@Brant yes i'll do that later. right now the logo is being grabbed from the live site. I'll give @balpha a custom logo just for the chat so it's not too tiny.
@MichaelStum ha ha
19:48
i don't suppose that any of the House quotes got integrated into the new design anywhere?
Jin
Jin
@RobZ not, yet...
alive?
Jin
Jin
yeah... place holders
but i did put in a cat, so there..
That your cat?
19:50
shroedinger's?
Jin
Jin
yes, i have a handdrawn cat that lives with me.
looks kind of like something that would have shown up on House o.0
Looks like the "Where's Waldo" Waldo that hasn't been erased on our whiteboard for ~9 months
Well, reminds me of it.
reminds me of some of the whiteboards around here
but then, most of the whiteboards around here are never properly cleaned either
Jin
Jin
i really wanted to work some Office Space reference to the 404/captcha/error images
19:53
@RobZ Gotta love that faint pink tinge
Jin
Jin
or elsewhere on the site
but i didn't have much time
@Jin "we couldn't find that page, but we found this awesome red stapler"
@NickT "PC LOAD LETTER"
WTF DOES IT MEANNN
Jin
Jin
i was thinking for the error page, it'd have a screenshot of the beatup printer..
19:55
@Jin That actually would be pretty cool...
I could have sworn one of the stackexchanges already used that image for its 404 page.
Jin
Jin
and i look forward to the day when the site footer has 37 pieces of flair...
2
Flair = CCwiki logo?
Jin
Jin
se site links
with lil colored sqaures
maybe there is some way that someone (with more talent than me) could shop this to have 404?
20:00
Why not an empty coffee pot?
Jin
Jin
@brant that's way too graphic.
as in the horror.
404 = clear to programmer, empty coffee pot = ????????????
Don't make me think!!!
maybe some sort of snow crash screen for the 500 error
Snow Crash is Neal Stephenson's third novel, published in 1992. Like many of Stephenson's other novels it covers history, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, religion, computer science, politics, cryptography, and philosophy. Stephenson explained the title of the novel in his 1999 essay In the Beginning... was the Command Line as his term for a particular software failure mode on the early Apple Macintosh computer. Stephenson wrote about the Macintosh that "When the computer crashed and wrote gibberish into the bitmap, the result was something that looked vaguely like static on a bro...
also, a hat tip to who ever wrote the chat software
Jin
Jin
we don't customize 500 pages
and, feel free to post your 404/captcha/error image ideas in meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/668/…
it'd be easier to keep track of
20:04
Could do something unrelated to the work environment but that is related to programmers such as StarTrek images since this site is all about programmers and not just their work
Jin
Jin
@Rachel agreed. as long as programmers "get it."
could be some inside jokes, or pop culture references etc.
i actually want to stay away from actual "coding" theme
something from TRON, maybe?
the original, of course
A quicktime player playing a 404 error page...
Jin
Jin
@balpha have you seen this? forgot if I RTed it or not. log.maniacalrage.net/post/2305769354/too-many-words-about-tron
@Jin any chance of a batch of 404 error images to rotate through?
Jin
Jin
20:07
no
@Jin tl;dr -- right now, but I will. I enjoy TRON everytime a watch it. And the soundtrack for TRON: Legacy is awesome
Jin
Jin
@balpha yeah. $3.99 for the whole album was a great deal
I payed €10, still worth it
Jin
Jin
this cracks me up so much
user image
4
Wow
I bet if you showed that to someone who cared about either three it might offend them
20:11
Quick question: When will programmers get added to the migrate options on SO?
@Jin Who's on the -by line?
Dumbledore
20:30
Hello, Can anyone recommend an alternative to CRON for scheduled scripting?
20:45
@Jin congrats, it's nice
@NickT No, I think that's just hilarious
Jas
Jas
21:29
greetings earthlings :D
21:50
Earthlings? Who said we're earthlings?
looks around suspiciously
22:12
How do I turn off the New Feed dropdown, it's kind of irritating?
@LanceRoberts You can't! If I were in you I'd ask the room owner to use Feed posts instead of the ticker.
Woah, this room is way too crowded how can anything be discussed in here?
@instanceofTom you should try
you'd be surprised
@badp They are already tickers.
@rchern I said, "instead of the ticker"
the ticker being annoying
22:17
Oh, I'm used to say the messages are annoying and liking the ticker.
5 mins ago, by Lance Roberts
How do I turn off the New Feed dropdown, it's kind of irritating?
You don't have to manually dismiss feed messages.
Turn it off once it appears or turn it off from appearing in the first place? (;
@rchern feeds are incredibly useful for chat regulars :)
I'm not disagreeing with you. Just being pedantic. I'm in a mood. q:
Oh, yeah, that's what you call it now :P
22:27
LOL
I had a migraine this morning. That generally puts me in the mood to pick fights.
Oh, yeah, it sucks.
@rchern How do I turn it off?
The feed would be ok if it timed out at some point.
My mouseclicks are precious.
22:50
Only room owners can modify the feed settings.
23:12
it's amazing how excited I am over VS2010
Yeah, it's a pretty nice upgrade compared to the 2005->2008 switch.
I only wish I had the SuperUltimaMax edition or whatever ridiculousness is required for intellitrace, which I loved when I was using the RC
@Brant Now imagine going from VS2005 -> VS2010
Linq, ASP.net MVC, WCF, etc, etc
Oh yeah, that'd be crazy.
LINQ has changed the way I write code.
23:44
zomg
new site design
so full of win
all praise Jin, maker of good looking websites
