Q: Is there still a need for writing SQL?

C. RossWith so many ORM tools for most modern languages, is there still a use case for writing and executing SQL in a program, in a language/environment that supports them? If so why?

So ... ORM
Should I use it ... where's the cut off point where it's useful and not?

How about some Futurama screencaps? I'm sure we could find a couple of interesting ones.
@GoodEnough not a bad idea
femputer maybe?
Jin
Jin
I think an actual screencap would be copyrighted. but we can mimic the idea
21:52
Not all programmers watch Futurama. Just saying. (;

@rchern lies
@Jin don't make me go psycho on you...you know I will. q:

ha.
@jin - how's the hunt for 404 and captcha images going?
Jin
Jin
22:09
@ChrisF I haven't really been hunting, except for reading people's suggestions on Meta.
i'm about 80% done with css conversion, but will need some intense testing this evening
i have to say, this design has been a bit challenging to convert.
@rchern not all programmers read xkcd, but ...

Jin
@CRoss AT LEAST WE CAN ALL AGREE ALL PROGRAMMERS LOVE STAR TREK
THE END.
ooh, can we talk about which series is best?!? </sarcasm>
Jin
Jin
TNG of course!
Jin
Jin
22:12
or the last 2 seasons of DS9
just don't mention the V word..
@Jin or E, if that even counts
There is only one true Star Trek.
79 episodes and 3 1/2 good movies
Jin
Jin
i never took V serious, only watched it because it was the only series on TV at one point.
however I can't forgive it for ruining Q's character
and the Borg. They got less threatening with every episode they were in
Jin
Jin
oh yeah, that too.
btw since you guys are here to keep me company, you get a treat.
you're looking at the pure html/css version.
i'm still adding more sprite images in.

Star Trek

Proposed Q&A site for devoted Star Trek fans who love Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans, Andorians, Telarites, Betazoids, Bajoran, Cardassians, Trills and Humans. Note that Borgs, Jem'Hadar and Q are strictly not allowed.

Currently in definition.

hey @MichaelStum
22:26
@Jin Yeah - but that would be admitting something to the whole internet ;)
Oops I just remembered I've flagged that I "Like" Star Trek on Facebook ;)
Jin
Jin
i'm a proud nerd.
i really wish there's another ST series. growing up, there was always one on tv
I watched it when it first aired in the UK - 1969 and watched every episode every time it was on.
I remember the anticipation of the movies and TNG
/wave
@Jin Question Text looks a bit too condensed IMHO
Jin
Jin
I thoroughly enjoyed the last ST movie. It's probably my fav. the casting was great.
@MichaelStum i'm still playing with the letter-spacing. but what do you think about the font itself?
@Jin You mean the new one with Sylar as Spock?
Jin
Jin
22:31
i feel it works for the theme. i didn't want to use a standard arial/helvetica font because i feel they're too OS defaultish.
@ChrisF yes. when i first saw him on Heroes, I thought whoa he'd make a good Spock, without makeup..
The Uhura/Spock plot felt a bit too tacked on. Making him struggle with his human part is an interesting idea, but there is room for improvement. I wouldn't mind a new Series in that Universe, but I think the new Kirk has yet to prove himself. All the ST Series had great Captains.

hello @Pierre303
Hello Jin
Congratulation for your last layout.
Jin
Jin
@Pierre303 thanks!
I wasn't sure when heard about the movie, but I've seen it 3 times now and enjoyed it each time. Not sure about the "comedy relief" turn by Simon Pegg as Scotty though. Hope he tones it down for the sequel.
22:41
@Jin It's clear and readable, but for example the C looks too narrow (That's what I meant with too condensed). Maybe it just looks weird because it's different from all the other fonts, not sure. It's nice to look at, it just looks out of place a bit
Jin
Jin
@MichaelStum ok. jeff's on the fence about it too. i'll see how the community respond to it. i always do post launch tweaks anyway.
@Jin No. q:
