Wut?
Tag says HTML5, but description says XHTML. Does anyone even write apps in that anymore?

I would have asked this question on quora but then felt that here I might find more experienced programmers who themselves have gone though this problem at some point of time during there learning process. Please take some time to read this lengthy question and guide me like little kid stuck out in middle of ocean.

I am a computer science undergraduate. I didn't had much of knowledge of computers before I stepped into computer science. I basically don't like studying math, science and other subjects after high school because till class 12th I have studied enough science and math to be awar

user15026
Well, probably not every technology ever, for one.

user15026
Just sayin'.

Calculus is useful, especially the core concepts of how slopes relate to curves relate to areas.

user20683
@HELPPLZ you won't learn everything in a bachelor's degree. A graduate level degree can (not always) hurt your employment prospects in the video games industry in particular

user20683
game dev is very math intensive

2:24 AM
Curiosity does not beat experience.

user15026
Also, as a general rule, learning everything ever is not the best choice. Pick a handful of things and stick with them so you can say "I am really good at x,y,z" and be able to back it up.

I don't have math phobia I did little of directx programming and i find math used there is very normal basic vector and trigo which i already studied in high school

@HELPPLZ I don't understand your question at all. You start out by saying you're done learning because you already know enough, your teachers are idiots, Zuckerberg just got lucky, and then ask if PhD is specialized? Of course it is; that's how PhD's work.

user20683
we aren't a life oracle service

Programming is about solving problems. Knowing math (and history, different spoken languages, social sciences, physical sciences....) all are tools for problem solving.

2:26 AM
And you do have to have some intellectual curiosity. You won't last long in programming if that's already gone.

user20683
you won't last long generally in the STEM disciplines with that gone

user15026
"Internet is surely connecting but facebook is not connection the world" - well....as much as you might not like it.....it's kinda connecting the world.

user15026
Perhaps not in a way you prefer, but it is doing pretty well at what it says on the tin.

user20683
there's a tendency in many engineers to show disdain for management. The sooner you bury this and learn how to work with them, the easier your life will be the more freedom you'll get; since you'll be able to read good managers from bad ones and find the good ones.

Thanks a lot all of you...So, found out basically I should concentrate on just game development. Be nice at C++/DirectX(my choice for developing games) .

2:33 AM
...

user20683
@HELPPLZ if game dev is what you want to do, get really good at it

Ok
I don't have much of gaming industries India. So, should I move to place where i find people with my interest after graduation?
@WorldEngineer

user15026
@HELPPLZ If you have a job, maybe.

user20683
@HELPPLZ moving to a foreign country without a work visa or a job offer is...unwise.

user15026
Like I wouldn't advise hopping to a different country with no way to support yourself. (Chances are, if you try, they won't let you in anyhow.)

user15026
2:37 AM
Least, they wouldn't here.

user20683
nor here

user20683
you'd need an H1-B or a TN

getting visa & job is not difficult i guess. I have see people moving to other counties without any talent. They just migrate. But in my case i'll be really good at what I do. May be I can apply for an intership

user15026
@HELPPLZ Harder than you'd think.

I know about visa process other things my sister is in London. She says for talented people its very easy.

user15026
2:39 AM
Well, whatever you think is best, then.

Thanks everyone :) for all the suggestions

Um, what just happened?

We were very helpful.

"Everyone but me is an idiot" ==> game development?

user20683
@RobertHarvey I did the thing I usually do: pick something that I can answer out of an incoherent mess. Even if that answer is not helpful in the slightest.

user20683
2:46 AM
Seriously, some of my best answers are "your question is ill formed but I'll answer what I think your question should be"

user15026
@RobertHarvey Okay good, I am not the only one that feels that way.

Morning, Whiteboard. I'm back after a nice long weekend. I took 32 seconds off my 5k time and took Monday off to watch the Boston Marathon. Unfortunately, I didn't get to the faq-proposed tag, but it's still on my radar for this week. I am well rested, though, so I'm tackling work with quite a bit of vigor.

user55340
Engineer types: I recommend cs students take writing classes to help with writing requirements and documents. Would you recommend engineers to take art or sculpture classes for the future of 3d printing?

user41796
@MichaelT mechanicals and civils, perhaps

user41796
although I would recommend a writing course first

user41796
Electricals won't benefit as much from a sculpture class

user41796
1:48 PM
And I'd encourage more sculpture than art

user41796
Architectural Engineers could benefit from either art or sculpture classes. A thorough understanding of form would be helpful in their career

@MichaelT no
3D printing isn't really "art" in the same sense
now, 3d modeling classes or learning sketchup? yeah

user55340
@enderland it's about visualizing 3d shapes that are not straight lines.

user55340
Being comfortable and familiar with working with those shapes and forms.

No. I expect that many CS jobs will not involve 3d printing.

1:51 PM
3D modeling for CAD work and art is a completely different thing

and most engineers loathe "creative art" stuff ;)

Whereas every job requires writing.

@MichaelT Actually, there was a story on NPR about this topic this morning.

user41796
@Telastyn He was suggesting writing for CS gigs; sculpting for engineering types

1:53 PM
It was about a car startup that 3d printed cars in partnership with a government research lab. The guy from the startup who ran the manufacturing center suggested that very thing.

user55340
@ThomasOwens welcome to my morning commute.

Ah, I see.

@MichaelT Did you hear the same story this morning?

I think for most traditional engineers it's not worth it, but if you want to do something like industrial design/etc then absolutely

user41796
Having an intimate understanding of the form you're working with as an engineer is an important skill. It's also what separates "good" machinists from "great" machinists.

1:55 PM
I believe the suggestion was that with the advent of 3d printing, it would be possible to create new and unique shapes for items.

user55340
@ThomasOwens yep.

So if you're interested in engineering in a manufacturing setting, art and sculpture could help drive an understanding of non-traditional shapes.

user55340
Shapes not constrained by traditional lines, pegs and holes.

3D printing is not currently scalable though

So you could design something that is not only functional, but also asthetically pleasing. And perhaps more efficient if you're looking for something aerodynamic.

1:56 PM
I don't know how that will change in the future, but at this point if you want to do something mass produced you can't really 3D print it

@enderland It's getting there.

at least cost effectively
@ThomasOwens not really in a meaningful way, yet, the cost/time per part produced via 3D printing is huge compared to injection molding (for plastics at least) if you are making a significant quantity

user55340
In college, it's hard to get some STEM types out of the direct path, into the tangential arts (writing, sculpture) that can provide other benefits to the final professional work.

user55340
@enderland it's closer than you think.

where 3D printing really shines is one-off fab types of things (think warranty parts or single use items) or prototypes

1:57 PM
@enderland The lab in the story I heard was able to spend less time manufacturing complex panels for airplanes than it took to ship the finished item.
3d printing is very quickly moving toward something that is for mass production.

@ThomasOwens yes, but that's likely a relatively low volume item

user55340
And cost less than the shipping too.

@ThomasOwens Were you actually at the Boston? My brother ran it in 3:13

if you are making 100 or even 1000 things it's almost assuredly cheaper to 3d print them
at least for plastics, I don't know how metal fab compares yet (there are structural issues in some applications)

@durron597 Yeah. I was at mile 23 for quite a bit.
I wasn't out for the whole thing, though.

2:06 PM
@ThomasOwens Did you stay to see rank and file runners, or just the elites?

@durron597 I saw the end of wave 2 and left when wave 3 started showing up. It was awfully cold and windy. I was walking along the route, though, and kept watching.

@GlenH7 lol, I'm sure it's more than what we spent ;)

@GlenH7 Well, on the bright side, at least you are over 10000 cv reviews now

I'm only 750 or so rep away from 3k here :)

user41796
@enderland It was an expensive ring. But seriously, learn when to put the rotors away and let them live on their own.

user41796
2:11 PM
@durron597 GAH! I meant to grab a screenshot at 10k. D'oh!

@GlenH7 yeah. my parents basically cut me loose when I left for college, which was a great thing as it forced me to "do life" on my own

user41796
Perish the thought of cutting them loose at graduating from college then... :-)

I guess my parents DID partially help with college costs, not sure if that's the same thing or not
I can't fathom the idea of being involved in a significant "making life decisions" way that some parents are for their older kids

user41796
Yeah, this is why I have full enclosure headphones

user41796
And the eeyores are work are more annoying than normal today. Oh well

user41796
2:18 PM
Irony is complaining about the complainers

THEY ARE THE WORST
@AshleyNunn do you speak spanish by chance? stackexchange.com/work-here/13/…

@GlenH7 Well just get it at 11111 then.

user41796
Oh, how the headphones are paying for themselves at this point. :-)

user41796
@durron597 But that'll take FOREVER! :-)

@GlenH7 or even 10101 if you don't want to wait that long

user41796
2:21 PM
And I'll likely tune out as I get close and will miss that one too

user41796
10101 is more doable, yeah

3:04 PM
"Informational interviews..." Does anyone really do these, or is it a job-hunting urban legend?
An Informational Interview (also known as an Informational conversation) is a meeting in which a potential job seeker seeks advice on their career, the industry, and the corporate culture of a potential future workplace; while an employed professional learns about the job seeker and judges their professional potential and fit to the corporate culture, so building their candidate pool for future hires. In an informational interview, job seekers can be unemployed, or else employed and considering new options. They use the interview to gather information on the field and on specific companies that...

user41796
I think they're rare, but not completely non-existent

user41796
Given the lack of slack in most people's schedules, I'm not certain I would invest the time in pursuing an informational interview

If you can think of it, some people probably do it. There are 7 billion of us after all

[things you can't unsee on the internet]

I've heard about this stuff happening a bit around conferences and stuff
usually poaching talent
"you don't want to be seen interviewing with Apple, but are interested in our company. How about we have dinner and have a friendly chat?"

3:10 PM
I think that happens a lot more in the Silicon Valley area

(proceed to sell the hell out of the company to the candidate)

in other words it's putting your CV out there while trying to hide it in semantics

not even CV, it's more like picking up a girl in a bar - except it's a skilled colleague at a conference.

Same difference, amirite?

I have no idea, that would require interaction with humanity.

3:21 PM
"Hey baby, why don't you and I go back to my place and discuss the logistical challenges faced by off-shore employess with a pending green card status"
works every time

I think there are quite a few companies that do that sort of thing, though, I went to a local networking event which turned out to be sponsored by a company which basically did that
"you should work for us"
"even though our HR is super slow and we'll call you a few times periodically telling you we'll get back to you even though we won't"

"We need so many people! (just not you)"

"Our turnover is so bad! We need more suckers... er..."

I think it's more they aren't big enough for a real coordinated HR department
so it's a bunch of super busy hiring managers bumbling over each other

or they are but HR has grown into an unweildy beast that can't be controlled

3:24 PM
@enderland and because of all the bumbling many candidates just give up
creating even more problems

@ratchetfreak hi, my name is enderland, and as a moderator on The Workplace I don't work for companies which can't even actually offer me a job in spite of wanting to
:)

> hi, my name is enderland, and as a moderator on The Workplace I don't work for companies which can't even actually offer me a job in spite of wanting to can only quit a job, not start one.

hey now I started one yesterday ;)

HINT: You should quit!

@Ampt HR doesn't do hiring anymore, most people who do HR these days see that as below them; they're all about managing company liability: Updating employee handbooks, ensuring everyone signs agreements that they'll follow them and can be killed at will and that nothing anyone in the company does can be traced back to the company
and managing benefits.

3:29 PM
> and mismanaging benefits, which they constantly try to downsize at the drop of a hat

@Ampt I've thought about it... but I'm giving this job at least 3 months to try and see :)

@Ampt exactly, benefits are a company liability. Reduce reduce reduce.

wait until someone realizes that HR is a liability...

@JimmyHoffa HR doesn't hire anymore? Thank God, because they suck at it.
That they consider it beneath them explains a few things.

@RobertHarvey they didn't used to necessarily, their terribleness at it is a modern thing.
Time was, all the people who do hiring these days, used to be hired to HR jobs. Now they all work for recruiters taking a cut of the industry GDP while adding to it in no way whatsoever.
HR doesn't do hiring because hiring is a liability- hire the wrong person and oh noes! Reduce reduce reduce.

3:32 PM
better have the same 4 people do the work of 8...

That's why they push it to outside companies, then if the employee steals from the company or its customers, they can't be held liable - after all they didn't hire them.

@JimmyHoffa except it's still their responsibility to screen those out

@ratchetfreak plausible deniability, they play zero role in the process so they can hang onto as little liability in case of a court case as possible. I've not even met an HR person until post-hiring in multiple jobs.
also accounts for the fact that so much work is contractors these days - in the case of a contractor instead of an FTE, they really are not responsible and can even sue the contracting company over the employee doing such.

@gnat for a desperate accept data point:

@enderland That's the kind of thing that makes programming so difficult.
All of the weird things that make no sense, but you still have to know them.

@RobertHarvey and once you memorized all the weird things they change them on you

Yes, five minutes later.

4:17 PM
I should never have done the office13 pilot!

Q: Open.ics with Outlook 2013 to read items

enderlandThis is specific to Office 2013. In previous versions of Office (2010), I had a script which would download an .ics attachment and then save it to my calendar. After loading the .ics I then iterate through the .ics file and copy all AppointmentItem's to my calendar. Dim oSharedFolder As Outloo...

feel free to cynically upvote then lol

Working with JTree is painful as all hell. I didn't think it would be so hard to make a JPanel that is actually usable display.

user15026
@enderland I don't speak Spanish, and it's highly unlikely I would be what SE wanted in a CM despite that...

user41796
4:26 PM
@AshleyNunn Don't undersell yourself. Despite the bilingual requirement, I think you have a well demonstrated history on all of the other items there.

user41796
And for the record, I think SE does a great job at explaining their commitment to diversity in their job requisitions. I just read that now and have to say I'm impressed.

user15026
@GlenH7 Yeah, but since i don't have the bilingual requirement, it's not worth wasting their time.

Don't undersell yourself...

user41796

Companies like SE probably have a lot of flexibility in their hiring processes, too, keep in mind

user15026
4:30 PM
I honestly think I'd like that one better @GlenH7

@AshleyNunn I saw that one too, wasn't sure if that would be something you like or not

user41796
And it's not like you don't have a direct channel to current employees so you can ask additional questions about the role.

user15026
But I mean I am still not certified or anything. So I feel like again I would be a waste of time.

user41796
@AshleyNunn Doesn't hurt to ask for more information

@AshleyNunn let them determine you aren't certified or qualified, don't try to determine that for them ;)

user41796
4:31 PM
^^^^ This

user15026
@GlenH7 I could, but that would mean admitting I want it. And I don't want to do that because I am tired of never being right enough. (why yes, I have burned out some)

user41796
@AshleyNunn Conversely, if you don't tell them you're interested then they'll never get the process started

user15026
And I don't know how to sell myself appropriately because all I see are the things that would make me crap for it.

user41796
You're already at "No."

user41796
All you have is upside

user15026
4:33 PM
@GlenH7 I suppose. I just don't want to get hopeful.

user41796
@AshleyNunn So pour a stiff glass of your favorite alcoholic beverage, look over each of their hiring points and come up with stories about how you've excelled in cases like that.

user41796
You like helping people find things. So there's the first example taken care of.

user15026
@GlenH7 my house is lacking in alcohol!

user41796
You know the SE infrastructure really well. Heck, you even help moderate a site for them. Point two.

Doesn't SE pretty much always hire people who were previously mods on the site?

user15026
4:35 PM
I just think it would be a crazy thing. Like bonkers nuts to even think a company I value a crap load would even look at me.

I mean you're already a mod... you've been chosen by the community for the good of the site!

user15026
@GimmeTehRepz they do hire out of the network for some things, but a large number of the employees, especially CM and Dev, come out of the network.

ooooh maybe you'll get to meet joel
tell him that I've got a list of features for him when he's got a second

user41796
@AshleyNunn Since I can't buy you a bottle through the magic of the interwebs, I guess I'll have to suggest a walk first. Would rather be able to buy a bottle, but c'est la vie.

user41796
@AshleyNunn That's just your self-doubt talking

user15026
4:36 PM
@GlenH7 I could go see the ducks, they would remind me I am pretty great.

user41796
You are qualified for that role

but srsly, you are

user15026
@GlenH7 you think?

well, you're already doing it for free... so... yes

^^

user41796
4:37 PM
@AshleyNunn See, and you're much closer to being a programmer than you realize - since we all use rubber ducks to talk to in order to resolve our programming problems. You just use real ones

user41796
@AshleyNunn Yes, quite seriously. Just from chatting with you in here, I can build half of your application

user41796
And I only know a fraction of the good stuff that could be put into a resume.

user15026
@GlenH7 see, I can't. I am like "I don't know what my skills are or how to phrase them"

user15026
So I just decide not to.

user41796
And they'd never turn you down if you said "I want to start as a CSR, but keep studying and possibly move into a more technical role"

user41796
4:39 PM
@AshleyNunn You should chat with the ducks then to get your courage up

It's also probable your morale in general for job applications is at or close to zero, which translates to wanting to avoid any hope to avoid any further demoralization...

user41796
This may be the only hang-up though:

user15026
@enderland yep, you got it.

user41796
> As you will be visiting our clients in this role you will need to travel regularly.

user15026
@GlenH7 I have a passport.

user41796
4:39 PM
OTOH, IIRC I think you want to be traveling at this point

Bam, you're in

user15026
And I can get friends to watch my cat.

user15026
Hell, I would love to travel.

user41796
Okay, you need to chat with the ducks today then

user15026
Damn it, guys. I think I am going to try this and it is all your fault.

4:40 PM
QUACK

user41796
'cause I think you'd do great in that job

HONK HONK

user41796
@AshleyNunn And you've got a ready source of resume + cover letter reviewers

user15026
4:41 PM
@GlenH7 Oh I wouldn't want to impose!

user41796
And for that matter, cheat and ask some of the recent hires what they think was the secret sauce for the interviewing process

user15026
@ampt that is the best and weirdest thing I have seen in a while.

loool are you serious? Go see the friggin ducks, then write stuff for us to pick apart like the cynical bastards we are.

@AshleyNunn ....

user41796
@AshleyNunn Pffft, this may mean you'll be out my way and I'll get cupucakes. That's a win!

user15026
4:42 PM
@GlenH7 Oh, I see, this is all selfishly motivated!

user41796
@AshleyNunn Well, duh

haven't you realized? Everything we do is selfishly motivated!
:D

user41796
Oh, and you're qualified for the gig, so give it a shot.

user41796
> then write stuff for us to pick apart like the cynical bastards we are.

user41796
consistent storyline there...

user55340
4:43 PM
@AshleyNunn are the ducks in the Stanley cup playoff? Is Canada going to finally bring the cup back?

@GlenH7 it's all the yogurt I eat.

user41796
Way TMI....

Wasn't sure you were going to get that ;)

user41796
Some things are ... obvious.

user41796
:-)

user15026
4:45 PM
@ampt bans

see, you're getting it already

user55340
How much water is in the Anaheim Ice rink?

user15026
@michaelT that made me laugh.

I'll have you know that I've been banned by the Community bot for talking about yogurt.

how many online personality profile types of quizzes are there... I've taken so many just for internal trainings. and there are ALWAYS more

user55340
4:47 PM
@enderland are you an ewock or a storm trooper?

Ewok, plebeian!

@MichaelT definitely storm trooper

... do you think stormtroopers wear socks?

user15026
@enderland I have taken so many for job interview stuff. I tend to start psychoanalysis on them.

user15026
@ampt to stop the armor from chafing, duh

4:48 PM
@AshleyNunn Yeah I know, each internal training we have has one which is slightly different and yet they are all the same
"wow people are different! NO FREAKING WAY" (but apparently this is profound to some people)

Can I ask a question? about (programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/279776/…) this question

@jen6 yep

I study c++ but no idea about what to make

this is the perfect place to discuss questions that are deemed off topic for the main site

user15026
4:50 PM
@enderland wait, wait, wait. We aren't just clones of each other? There goes that theory.

those are two good sites for doing progrmaming

reading c++ books and notes new feature are also fun but I want to use theme!!
them
@enderland thanks I'll

Dear @enderland, when somebody is trying to help you down voting is not the best feedback. — Eugene Astafiev 1 min ago
I'm a bad person apparently

@ThomasOwens I never use any of the default swing models if I can help it

user41796
@enderland I usually return with "votes are anonymous by design"

@GlenH7 well he copy pasted code out of the page I had read for documentation, so... hard to feel like it was "helpful"

user41796
Then that just adds to the delicious irony of explaining to them that votes are anonymous by design

user15026
@GlenH7 the ducks say I would be quacked not to try.

user41796
5:15 PM
Those are very wise ducks

I'll have you know that I'm the one who downvoted you - twiceAmpt 12 secs ago
no one takes credits for my downvotes
no one

user41796
That's hilarious, especially given your rep on SO

right? hahaha

user15026
@ampt duly noted. Do not take credit for the sock's downvote. I don't want to know what happens if I do.

user41796
Or just make comments like that when you have < 125 rep

5:18 PM
I take credit for all the DVs at SO

@ratchetfreak I wrote my own accordion.
I'm writing tests now, including a simple main to drive a JFrame demo.
It was easier.

user15026
@ampt well, you are a sock, so it could well be your fault

Tests? Pah, just launch it once locally, if it works, deploy!
Tests are for rockets and heart monitors!

CellRenderer is a very nice class for stamping controls without actually including them in the hierarchy

and maybe not even rockets, depending on where you're pointing them.

I think that only in C# does the code value.Value make sense.

Wow. Famous question badge on superuser. I don't have one of those on SO haha

@durron597 I have a handful on SO :)
I must be more famous than @durron597

Chat outage! rude.
@enderland We have about the same number of people reached.

> Make no mistake: human questions are the most important ones, not questions about finding printed C++ standard
waaaaaaaaaaaaaat

user41796
According to your SO profiles, enderland is more famous by 4k people

6:04 PM
@GlenH7 I can subtract too! high five

Did anyone see my post about the DHTML folks on Careers?
> Author complex "web 2.0" user interfaces using DHTML (XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, DOM, AJAX, JSON)

user41796
I know! Isn't it awesome?! I just got the hang of it yesterday! Er, wait. maybe it was the day before? I dunno, I forget.

Isn't XHTML defunct?

@GlenH7 Well, what date was it? Today is the 21st.
@RobertHarvey I saw you wrote DHTML and my brain went DHMO

user41796
@RobertHarvey I'm not familiar with it. Could be they simply have too much in place to consider anything else. Or they need help with migration.

Q: Putting soft questions on hold unproductive?

Alexei AverchenkoI understand you want questions that can be answered definitively, that's the point of a stack. But given how many sappy personal advice questions you're getting, maybe it's time to create a support group to redirect them to, or maybe find an existing one, because just putting these questions on ...

is this guy trolling?

user41796
winforms and silverlight are dead, but there's still active development done in them

@GlenH7 Tags say HTML5.

user41796
The wikipedia article indicated there is an xhtml5 spec in the works.

user41796
6:10 PM
@enderland After reading his Edit, I wish I could downvote further

user41796
Trolling or not, they haven't bothered to research any of the sites history but they suddenly know the solution to everything. Next! in line, please!

user41796
@enderland I was doing great with the help vampire article until I got to:

user41796
> so leave your stakes at home.

user41796
Yeah, um.... I'm not so sure about that. ;-)

come on people, vtc some stuff so I can get 20 reviews in today! (cc: @Snowman @ratchetfreak)

user41796
6:15 PM
And Shog9 shuts it all down. Props!

6:37 PM
this article is fan-tastic

Oh, yeah. That's basically the definitive work on how an internet group can destroy itself from the inside out.

user55340
Or be designed in a way that prevents the core group from fixing problems as they arise.

@RobertHarvey I'm familiar with all of them, so I can't really answer. But neither of them contradicts the scope of the corresponding site. — Alexei Averchenko 41 secs ago

Are these nanodegree things worth it?

user41796
6:57 PM
@RobertHarvey Wouldn't register with me when scanning a resume

user41796
So I'd say "no"

user41796
Continuing education is a good thing, don't get me wrong. But I wouldn't pay money for a non-accredited "degree" in the hopes of it bolstering my resume.

@RobertHarvey I'd say yes. I wouldn't weigh them as much as work experience, but if one covers the skills that I'd need, I'd at least want to test the candidate in a phone screen.
I don't know about that one in particular, but it would catch my eye.

Thanks.

user55340
@MichaelT I understand now, thanks — Alexei Averchenko 5 mins ago
