of course if they're like us, they've probably just started talking about beer and will be far too busy to help you

@Ampt I've decided, beer is a monad. It's awesome, therefore it's a monad.

I'm pretty sure it's just a primitive
which only contributes to it's awesomness

Q: Fun, trivial programming projects

user3839220I've had "programmers block" recently, so I'm fresh out of things to program. So I thought I'd ask for suggestions, I looked around on StackOverflow, but most of the questions to the answers I was looking for pointed me to the programmers stack exchange. Anyway, so I'm looking for some fairly t...

how much are you willing to bet it was a copy paste from that and some commenter pointed him to P.SE

@Ampt i think its tongue in cheek
or I should say, I hope its tongue in cheek

@Ampt Why, thank you! I have been working out lately... :-P

How do you work your willpower out? Put a cupcake on the counter and just stare at it?

user55340
Hey, @Oded I know the Roomba doesn't bother with questions like these - aside from routinely bothering the mods with flags (though I do need to catch up to Glen) is there any prospect of adding more teeth to that part of the roomba? (they can clutter up things as time goes on).

@MichaelT I vote we ducktape a knife on the top of the roomba if we're open for suggestions

user55340

@Ampt I read that as Duck Type... too much Python

user41796

Q: Allow 10k to vote to delete on locked rejected migrations

MichaelTWhile wandering through P.SE, sometimes a close vote finds its way onto a question from SO that was migrated back in '11 and it gets closed. When this happens: The question is locked All answers from SO are deleted This, in of itself, isn't a bad thing, but it is locked now. This means that...

6:03 PM
@Ampt have you done anything with WPF or any declarative UI language like XAML?

user55340
@Oded Its my #2 pet issue (after bad migrations... and partly because of)

Fair enough - I am sure his Shogness is looking at your first one >_<

@Ampt if not, as much as it sucks getting stuck on some crap with a dead tech, SilverLight really isn't a bad tech to deal with and it's good to learn your way around a declarative UI language because they're not altogether uncommon (and growing more common)

user55340

user152739How can I find the following product using elementary trigonometry? $$ \tan 1^\circ \cdot \tan 2^\circ \cdot \tan 3^\circ \cdots \tan 89^\circ.$$ I have tried using a substitution, but nothing has worked.

user55340
granted, the mathjax sucks for one boxing too...

user55340

6:07 PM
@JimmyHoffa barely. Just played with it a little bit while trying to make a windows 8 app

@Ampt pay attention to the XAML underlying concepts while you're learning it, the concepts underlying it while it's a dead language, you'll find them in other languages plenty enough. People have mimicced the concepts in numerous JavaScript frameworks...

XUL predated XAML by a good margin. Same basic concepts.

user55340

user55340
Note the path to that plugin... "wish list"

yeah... I see that

user41796
@MichaelT I needed a laugh, thanks

apparently using VS for this C#/Silverlight stack is optional?

user41796
6:33 PM
@Ampt To my knowledge, don't bother trying to edit C# outside of VStudio. Just not worth your time

well then

user41796
@Ampt You might use blend for some of the strictly UI stuff

user41796
Oh, and that's an epic TWP question you put out there. How was Hawaii, btw?

@GlenH7 Well if I want to vote in the upcoming mod elections I needed more rep so...

user41796

"I'll vote for anyone who votes to close that question..."

@psr I have some slight ethical concerns about this, but its for a good cause so... yes.
@MichaelT it's the perfect campaign

user41796
@Ampt Nothing within the T&C's requires the question or problem to be your problem.

@GlenH7 that's how I rationalized it too. I mean it could happen. It's not like I'm completely out of the realm of the possible
and, if people think it's good, it's good and generates interest in the site

@MichaelT You guys remind me I need a blender

user41796
6:59 PM
I've got a 10 qt container of salsa made up. I'll likely can half of the batch tomorrow night

user55340
Another thing to try...

user41796
@MichaelT I'll put this on the list too. I've got a bunch of fresh mint looking for recipes

crushed ice in a red wine glass. 3/4 oz OJ. 3/4 oz Creme de Cacao. 1 tsp Galliano. Pour over the ice.

user41796
I need to find a good cucumber / pickle recipe

user55340
(the red wine glass is to get the proper amount of ice and to hold it well - other glasses don't have the right shape to hold crushed ice properly... a tulip glass would also work)

@GlenH7 cucumber seeds. Plant. Wait a bit. Harvest. Eat.

user41796
I'm already at the harvest bit

user41796

user41796
ie. more than I can eat

user55340
I'll send my nephew over... he'll eat all of your pickles.

user41796
well, see. That's the problem. They're cucumbers right now. Need to turn them into pickles next.

user55340
7:04 PM
Are you after long term pickling? or a "month or so" type?

user41796
long term is fine

user41796
I'm probably going to can the salsa tomorrow night, so I figured I'd make some pickles too

user55340
The issue is that the long term ones need the proper equipment... and if you don't have that... it becomes difficult.

user55340
The month or so is a 'brine in the fridge' version.

user41796
@MichaelT Yeah, I've seen a few of those and I was underwhelmed. I think part of the problem was is the description was rooted too much in "Oh, I've never had a problem with this!!" as opposed to proven canning procedures.

user55340
7:09 PM
Trying to see if I can find that thing on America's Test Kitchen about pickles.

The fridge ones are along the lines of 'slightly extending the natural shelf life and adding flavor' rather than canning.

user55340
My mother once got some beer for killing slugs... it was on sale - cheapest thing they had. As she started pouring realized that this was good beer on sale, and had the rest for her self. Later went back and got some (slightly more expensive than the good beer on sale) cheap beer for the slugs.

Or use the beer to boil brats. that is also acceptable
preferably a nice dark one

@GlenH7 I thought about doing that, but it doesn't solve the underlying problem. My Meta SO post about EDIT: got huge pushback because people really wanted to use it, but since then I've been watching, and every time EDIT: is used, there's always some other problem that accompanies it.
EDIT: is symptomatic of users just wanting to tack things onto the end of their posts, without taking the time to perform an actual, good edit.

"We're Gonna Win Twins" is the fight song for the Minnesota Twins, played when the team takes the field before any home game. It has been used since the team moved to Minnesota in 1961. "We're Gonna Win Twins" is a collaboration between Ray Charles (not to be confused with Ray Charles) and Dick Wilson (not to be confused with Dick Wilson). Wilson, an advertising executive and jingle writer, composed the music. The Twins bought the rights to the song from advertising agency Campbell Mithun for one dollar. The team asked Charles to revise the lyrics. The singers are Kathy Mueller, Scott Nelson, Steve...

Hoo, boy. That Workplace question is turning into quite the soap opera.

user41796
What drove him to ask here on Progs instead of SO? </rhetorical question>

user15026
@Ampt Indeed......

user55340

@RobertHarvey someone's trying to cool it off with downvotes, but I don't think it's going away

user15026
@MichaelT laughs I am real! I promise!

9:10 PM
@GlenH7 Those meanies on SO. Think I'll go ask over here instead.

user41796
@RobertHarvey Clearly failed to do his research...

user55340
@RobertHarvey (little does he realize that the meanies who got fed up with SO being too nice hang out on P.SE?)

user41796
@Ampt At this point? Nope. It'll ride the hot question list for a bit.

@GlenH7 I'm still not even at 200. This shit's hard.

user41796
9:12 PM
You've got a few more days until the election starts...

user41796
A few more answers on your question would really push it up on the hot question list.

@AshleyNunn care to share the female perspective? hahaha

user55340
(random pursuing...) ever see the diagonal image stabilization - where they fix the image afterwards? Star Trek is funny

ahhh safely at 215 rep. Now to vote for one of those guys with 0 close votes, 0 flags, and 0 meta interaction

user55340
Stabilized ST:TNG ST:TOS

9:15 PM
@MichaelT lmao that's hilarious

user15026
@MichaelT These are amazing.

That would be more convincing if they were rocking in unison.

user15026
@Ampt Hahaha you know, I think I might pass :P

the TNG one is just priceless. Piccard in his chair
@AshleyNunn It's ok, I won't take it personally haha

user15026
I kinda want to respond to some of the answers being like "it is obvious you are a dude who knows nothing about ladies"
4

9:16 PM
Oh, yes. The TOS? Much more convincing.
@AshleyNunn Which pretty much describes most dudes. Ladies being the incomprehensible species that they are.

user41796
@AshleyNunn Just think of all the Beyonce references you could drop into an answer if you wanted.

user15026
@RobertHarvey Oh yes. We are difficult and elusive creatures, like shiny Pokemon.

user41796
@AshleyNunn gotta catch 'em all, right?

user55340
Notice Mccoy n the back there just going "I'm not an actor, I'm a doctor... oh, fall down... ok"

user41796
get? catch? <---- never played pokemon

9:19 PM
Catch is correct

user15026
@GlenH7 Precisely. :P

user55340
Alternatively, you've got Wild Bill Ricker riding the... chair.

user55340

user55340

@MichaelT Is that one stabilized as well?

user41796
9:22 PM
@MichaelT Who knows what he does in his off hours

user145406Today I learned that in 2012 VIM gathered 50000 Euro as charity for the children of Uganda. http:// iccf-holland.org/jaarrekening2012en.pdf

A couple more spam flags ought to take care of that.

its gone

user55340
@RobertHarvey deletes kill it faster... but helpful spam flags are nice to have too.

user15026
9:26 PM
@MichaelT That is totally what I thought of too.

user41796
Community moderation FTW

GTG. Writing a User Guide. Might check in later.

user55340
Btw, its rather fun to search youtube for "Brent Spiner Patrick Stewart"

user15026
@GlenH7 Annnnd there goes my brain.

user55340
@AshleyNunn we don't need you modraters... well... until we run out of close votes.

user15026
9:28 PM
@MichaelT I see how it is.

user55340
@AshleyNunn you could always make us beer ice cream and whiskey cupcakes...

user15026
@MichaelT Oh, you want bribes, is it?

would it help if we said pretty please with sugar on top?

@MichaelT: FTFY

user15026
@Ampt Well, the cupcakes are pretty much sugar on top, no? :P

user55340
9:33 PM
@RobertHarvey you are apparently scaring away the people from SO to ask their questions here...

@Doval Can you clarify what you meant in programmers.stackexchange.com/a/252527/16247 with your comment "I was hoping Scala had some clever trick to pattern match anonymous objects in the same way Standard ML/OCaml can pattern match real records" ?

Q: Stats on how attempts to circumvent SO question blocks impact other sites

gnatI would like to better understand how attempts to circumvent Stack Overflow question blocks impact other sites. I believe this can be estimated by finding out how many migrations to SO were rejected because asker is question blocked. Can we get some statistics on that please? I am particularly i...

numbers:

3884 users with accounts on Stack Overflow asked questions on Programmers during the past 120 days
442 of those users have been q-banned on SO at some point in time
320 of those users have been q-banned on SO during the past 120 days

Those 442 users asked 613 questions on Progse during this time period, and out of those questions:

424 were closed
429 were deleted
414 scored less than 0
76 scored more than 0

For comparison, 5038 questions were asked on Progse during the past 120 days by folks who didn't have q-banned accounts on SO, and out of those:

.@WilliamShatner ... @ESA_Rosetta will send Away Team @ESA_Philae probe to land on surface in November #NoRedShirts

user55340
(there's a bit of a conversation going on there too)

user55340
It starts here...

user55340
Good evening @ESA! How are things going with my European Space Friends?

10:23 PM
Swimmingly.

user55340
@RobertHarvey Shatner and ESA have been talking on and off about this for awhile... he's kind of in character (and a character) for this.

user55340
.@WilliamShatner @esa Comet on screen, Captain. Sensor scans in progress and hailing frequencies open. http://t.co/SZX0sfr7b4

user55340
That "NoRedShirts" one got a reply of:

user55340
@esa @ESA_Rosetta Haha! So the away team will come back?

user15026
10:32 PM
That is excellent :)

user55340
@AshleyNunn would you expect anything less from a Canadian? ;-)

user15026
@MichaelT Nope. We are great.

What is the area in a Winform having the minimize, maximize and close buttons called?

user55340
Btw - neat artist: guylaramee.com

@RobertHarvey windows buttons?

10:44 PM
I think Microsoft calls it a Control Box, but it looks like their documentation has an error. It says that it's located in the upper left-hand corner of the form.

@RobertHarvey nope, the context box that appears when you press Ctrl + Space or the left corner is the actual Control Box: "control box is where the user can click to access the system menu."

So what's it called, then?

apparently it's called "caption bar"

That's the whole thing.
I guess I'll just call them the "winform controls"

> The border style can also affect the size or availability of the caption bar section of a form
@RobertHarvey they don't have a property for all the three buttons, that is all I know

10:50 PM
OK.

user15026
11:11 PM
I am amused that I now have the Outspoken badge here :P

user55340
11:25 PM
@AshleyNunn You do realize thats not an overly common badge on this site - programmers.stackexchange.com/help/badges/74/outspoken

user15026
Oh man, I am used to the Bridge, where people get them like candy

user15026
You guys must like me or something

Yeah that's a tough one to get

user15026
11:50 PM
I was super startled because I was like "I already have...oh. Not the Bridge. Well then.:

Remember, with great power comes great responsibility

user15026
I will use my powers for good, I promise

user15026
@Ampt I have always said that if any of you end up near me that beer and cupcakes is totally a thing
