@WorldEngineer Android has theory? ;-)

user20683
@GlenH7 It works...in theory.

There are a couple open source versions readily available, which tells me it's "stupid simple" app, but I at least need to understand it well enough to tweak it and maintain it later.

user20683
it has security...in theory.

user55340
One up on Oriely books, I'd go for the Oriely online books... sure, you don't have the hard copy, but you've always got all the up to date ones.

user20683
that's true

9:01 PM
@MichaelT - hmm...I have my tablet, but I do like hard copies.

user55340
I like hard copies too... but when I started buying $50-$100 worth of books every time a new iOS came out for the reference material... the online form became very reasonable.

@MichaelT ...you did iOS development?

that is a great point.

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Dabbled in it for awhile during unemployed period. Never published aything but I've got some neat apps on my phone that are only on my phone.

user20683
@MichaelT This may amuse you:

user20683
9:05 PM

@JohnP damnit I was going to pin that!

hrm...

user20683
@JohnP Because it isn't

@WorldEngineer - Why is your avatar a marmosets rear end?
Ok, since it isn't... :p

user55340
@WorldEngineer On Code Golf.SE, parens apparently aren't counted against lisp dialects in number of characters.

9:07 PM
@WorldEngineer That is unbelievably annoying

user55340
(or are counted separately)

user20683
@GlenH7 not in chat

user20683
I can see the history but chat messages are permanent byes

user55340
Mods can edit and delete messages, but cannot undelete them.

user20683
as just demonstrated

user41796
9:08 PM
I couldn't make it sufficiently self-deprecating and still make sense. So I gave up.

Original messager can see history and cut/paste, that's what I did.

user20683
yep

anyone else miss UserFriendly?

user55340
@JohnP Room owners (those are the guys with italics names) can also read deleted messages.

user55340
@JohnP It was funny for awhile when I was more in the operations side of the world, but they got unfunny for awhile. The jokes just got drawn out too long.

9:11 PM
@MichaelT - True, but I'm a comics reader from way back, I'm used to long drawn out story arcs. I'm also very forgiving. I've been known to reread books I like many multiple times.

user55340
As to Android development... I've got a book here on safari books online that was published July 26th on Android Development Tools for Eclipse. I doubt I could find that in the bookstore yet.

user55340
Or "Introduction to Android Application Development: Android Essentials, Fourth Edition" which isn't due to be published until November (you get early access to books as "Rough Cuts").

user55340
@JohnP Long story arc, not a problem (Name of the Wind, Game of Thrones... ghads...)... 100th joke about Pitr with a russian accent...

user20683
@MichaelT

user55340
9:14 PM
@WorldEngineer (I'm drooling over that prospect)

user20683
@MichaelT I'm torn

user20683
It's one of my favorite things

user20683
it's also fantasy...and Fox...

Ah, you mean STALE jokes. Yeah, iliad did occasionally revisit things a bit much. I always wanted miranda/aj resolved, though...

user55340
@WorldEngineer I've worked with people who played the campaigns that he was a DM for (Central Wisconsin)...

user20683
9:16 PM
@MichaelT huh

user55340
He was born in Madison Wisconsin. Went to school at Steven's Point...

@MichaelT - One of my local DM's is the guy that wrote some of the rule books for Iron Crown Enterprises.

You're definately too old to learn. Take a seat, rest you. — ott-- 7 mins ago
Huh ?

user55340
There are serious questions of trying to camp out on his lawn when the next book comes out... he would probably frown on that though.

user41796
@JimmyHoffa Seriously. If you're going to snark about learning, at least spell definitely correctly.

user41796
9:20 PM
@JimmyHoffa - you can yank your comment out now. Hit refresh

user55340
@JimmyHoffa its apparently gone now. Your comment is obsolete.

user55340
And I'm a bit slower than Glen.

You're both slower than me, I had it deleted already ✰

user41796
caught yours on the swap

I always enjoy when they misspell it as defiantly.

user55340
9:27 PM
(hmm, only 7 questions tagged . No way to get that as a tag badge... sigh)

try it as gubmint.
:p

We can't force people to use it, and it wouldn't be the right answer even if we could. I'm not convinced. If every time one entered review, >3k users had to weigh in next time they tried to retrieve any page before the site served them anything. Over 3k the addiction has set in, they would do their review if it was between them and finding questions to answer. I give up we can't do that, I do not agree that it wouldn't be the right answer. — Jimmy Hoffa 9 secs ago

user55340
Jimmy further solidifies his persona as a Meta.Troll? ;-)

user55340
I wonder if putting a number next to the review thing would help? So that you always see the outstanding review queue... but that doesn't help with the informative parts of the 10k tools that I know people don't dig into much.

@MichaelT Speaking of, I need to go answer something and get them 10k tools..

user55340
9:35 PM
@JimmyHoffa Should have gotten onto that dynamic languages government question (btw, there's a good one from a guy who did DOD stuff and some of their rational).. I know I repcapped at least once from it.

user55340
(I'm embarrassed to say I've gotten nearly 500 rep from that answer...)

psst...rationale. rational is entirely different.

user55340
@JohnP Alas... too much time spent with rational (look at your own risk) melted my brain.

I'm a moran. It just occurred to me to see if there was an android se site.

user55340

user55340
9:46 PM
There's an SE site for everything

user55340

user20683
be aware that's the Android version of Super User

user20683
not SO

user55340

@WorldEngineer - Yeah, I'm seeing that. A much different flavor of questions.

user55340
9:48 PM
(hmm... nothing in French Language Usage about binge drinking... theguardian.com/world/2013/jul/29/… )

user20683
I like the one from there where this guy proved how many times a pair of blocks can be separated before they don't hold together anymore

so...Lego site is in beta, and we can't get enough commits to Nutrition to get it to beta...that figures.

user55340
@WorldEngineer Ever see the 3d printing set unification?

user20683
@MichaelT no

user55340
9:52 PM

Well, that's stupid.

user20683
@JohnP there's a techie slant but also a slant against pseudoscience

user20683
which nutrition is totally full of in many circile

All the questions for finding a book for beginning android link as duplicates to a question that has been removed for purposes of moderation.

user20683
@JohnP hmm

user55340
9:54 PM
Flag one of the questions and ask for the dup target to be undeleted?

@MichaelT It didn't strike me as a good question, too speculative; same reason I almost didn't answer that paypal error question...

user41796
@MichaelT so frigging cool

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Unfortunately, its the not good questions that give the best rep in that respect.

user55340

also it's based on a large assumption which though likely true, has no citation or proof

user41796
9:56 PM
That just bumped the 3D printer project way higher on the list

user55340

user41796
It helps that I had an all-in-one die recently, so I've got a great source for servos + parts

@MichaelT Yeah, geez 60 votes off that, my max answer vote is 55
@MichaelT that is super cool. the things you could create...the mind boggles...
Is there a 3d printing SE yet?

user55340
@JimmyHoffa Don't go poke at the one that got redeited with one of my cow-orker's comments..

If not, I'm sure it's coming..

A: Is it OK to split long functions and methods into smaller ones even though they won't be called by anything else?

MichaelTTesting code that does lots of things is difficult. Debugging code that does lots of things is difficult. The solution to both of these problems is to write code that doesn't do lots of things. Write each function so that it does one thing and only one thing. This makes them easy to test with...

user55340
There's also this article which came out yesterday about how the average household could save ~$2,000 / year with 3d printing... techcrunch.com/2013/07/31/…

@MichaelT The front left propeller has a loose nut and it's really annoying me

loose nuts are always a problem.

Can't be good for it to run like that... he's going to destroy it! Alternatively he just slapped ti together and finished constructing it for the photo which means he's being fraudaulent in that it likely doesn't work

10:53 PM
I'm unbright

11:20 PM
Somebody had been deleting a lot of my questions recently... Hmm..
I guess I'll just have to wait till I have 10k to find out who it is.
