Ugh... why is this question still a thing?!

12:44 AM
I think it's harmless, with more content than Batman ever had.

@XanderHenderson I'd leave the question alone, but it's true that the answers all fail to address the underlying mathematics. It's like answering "Why is 3−5 = −2?" with "Because 3−5 = (−1)·(−1)·3+(−1)·5 = (−1)·((−1)·3+5) = (−1)·(−3+5) = (−1)·(5−3) = −1·2 = −2.".......

Wrong answer not fixed, and the question is not great anyway.

It probably depends how generally you red the question. The OP asks: "Can someone explain a way to solve such questions." It's difficult to say what such questions means exactly.

8:04 AM
Not an answer and not even correct. ("8" is a closed curve.)

@MikeMiller first, I'd say we should strive for what is desirable not for what is necessary. Second, the site being mostly educational, it would seem desirable to me that the content is accessible to more users than just those that could answer it.

4 hours later…
@user21820 That is exactly the problem I see with the answers. The question is sufficiently clear and well written that I have no problem keeping it around, but the answers are utterly useless.
It is probably overly verbose, but I think it addresses the underlying issue, so, meh.

@Xander in Theorem (Alternating Series Test, v2) you wrote: he terms eventually alternate signs, i.e. there is an N sufficiently larger such that for all n≥N, if a_n≥0 then a_(n+1)≤0, any nonpositive sequence satisfy this, instead of continuing as "equivalently" it should be "and"

3:16 PM
@user21820 Can you please make cases for D1, D5 and D7?

@user1729 (D1) Never even stated what the asker thought a magma was, nor the substitution law, nor where he/she looked for "the axiom", nor bothered to spell correctly. (D5) Never bothered to read the linked duplicate properly. (D7) "I tried." Where's the evidence? I can also say, I've made my case.

@user21820 Well, for D1 it would have been nice if you had commented to this effect. How are they to know that magmas are non-standard while fields are standard?! I think you are being too harsh on them.

@user1729 That's ridiculous. None of my reasons stand alone. Together they make a strong case that the asker didn't put any effort into the question.
The only reason I answered at first was because the earlier answer was simply wrong. But the asker didn't even respond or inquire further.

@user21820 Its ridiculous that you give a constructive comment?!

@user1729 No. It's ridiculous that you say I'm being too harsh on them.

3:31 PM
For D5, not reading a link correctly is not a reason to delete the question! It is standard practice to not delete duplicates. Same for D7 - they tried something reasonable and it didn't work - why make them type it out?!

@user1729 (D5) Their question has no lasting value to Math SE. (D7) Sorry I don't buy that excuse. So many help-vampires use it.
And are you helping to delete D3, D4, D10? If not, what's your case?

@Holo Ugh... indeed. I had originally written that condition differently. Thanks.

4:14 PM
No problemo

4:33 PM
@user21820 Ad D7: The OP indicates that they have trouble understanding why the function is continuous, I don't know how this question is invalid? Certainly one can argue that it is still a duplicate but to delete it is a bit much as the question was asked in good faith and the OP seems to want to understand (= asks question about answer instead of copying it verbatim).

@Lord_Farin Well see my comments. They didn't even set up the function correctly, and didn't bother to compare theirs with the linked duplicate, to see why theirs isn't even a function. If they had a question about the linked answer, they should ask there in a comment.

@user21820 Ad D5: Besides that it is a true duplicate which has answers of some value (different notation at least, which hopefully aides findability), the OP indicates to want to understand how such manipulations are discovered.

@Lord_Farin Seems you got D5 and D7 mixed up.
I repeat what I said; I don't buy "I tried".

@user21820 I corrected it twice, seems the order of my tabs got mixed up. Apologies.

"I tried" isn't context. I am of the opinion that attempted solutions are very poor context to begin with, but they are infinitely superior to "I tried" with no work shown.

4:38 PM
@user21820 I can see that, however in both cases there was more information than "I tried". Additionally the mistake of misspelling the domain is typical and also occurs in many texts.

@XanderHenderson And let's have some statistical evidence concerning I tried.

An option with D7 is to merge it with the dupe target. That would keep the answers and (their points with the exception of the acceptance). It is not the most standard series, but anyone spending a lot of time within that tag might have suspected it to be a dupe anyway.

@Lord_Farin I evaluate questions as a whole. It is not just about the wrong domain, but it is about the claim that the function is continuous. Anybody who wants to use the word "continuous" ought to be able to define it, and it would then make very clear the role of the domain.

@user21820 I don't agree with the premise that someone ought to justify inaction. However it is productive to state the reasons because they might convince others.
@user21820 For my taste you're being too harsh here. Evidently we are dealing with a confused freshman or something. These mistakes could also be taken as a grappling point to write an answer highlighting the importance of this concept.

@Lord_Farin I didn't claim that people have to justify not voting. But if they don't, they also cannot keep pestering others to justify their voting.

4:42 PM
As such the question is infinitely more answerable than without the stated context.

@Lord_Farin I don't disagree with that. But we cannot keep comparing bad questions with 'infinitely' worse questions...

@user21820 Hm, maybe we should see this not in the light of "justification" (implying judgement) but rather in the light of "understanding" or "discussion".
@user21820 Of course we are free to judge as we please, but for my taste you're being too demanding here. I don't disagree with the question being closed per se, but for me deletion would be in order only after comment exchanges went ignored.
And I see that you've tried this, but a 10-6 = 4 hours reply window is not exactly spacious...

@Lord_Farin You of course understand that different users have different evaluation of the same questions. There will always be somebody more demanding than you, and somebody less demanding. There will also be people who want to preserve crap from cranks. And if you knew me, you would know that I'm actually very lenient when I see evidence of effort. I even frequently copy effort from comments into questions and vote to reopen. When I don't see effort, too bad.
2
Now, let's discuss why D3 and D10 are still not deleted.

@user21820 What are you talking about, @user21820? :P

@Lord_Farin: And in case it's not clear, if you sincerely think that the effort shown is sufficient, then I would respect your decision to not delete, or even to undelete (as no doubt you have voted). But likewise I hope you respect my evaluation of the same. That's all. =)

4:53 PM
@user21820 Sure, and I appreciate that we take the time to explain ourselves here, even if that in the end doesn't lead to consensus (like now). The discussion and acknowledgement of these differences goes a long way to exhibit that these activities are always based on personal assessment, standards, and preferences.

@Lord_Farin Right; we basically said the same thing at the same time. =)

@user21820 Great minds... ;)

@XanderHenderson I was talking about... hey where did they go?

Now if all those dismissing our activities as "trigger-happy delete-bots" would read these discussions...

@Lord_Farin Unfortunately, they would simply cherry-pick what favours them. =(

4:55 PM
I mean, occasionally somebody is even convinced to change their opinion. A rainbow unicorn on the internet nowadays...

Rainbow unicorns are, by far, the tastiest unicorns.
2

Hahaha...
Ugghh..
@XanderHenderson I'm vegetarian.

So are unicorns, I think...

@XanderHenderson But "tastiest" means you are encouraging eating them... I cannot abide your message having a star... =P

And they say that you are what you eat.
So unicorns must be vegetables.
That's how that works, right?

4:57 PM
@XanderHenderson Better stop eating tasty stuff. Others might get strange ideas...

@XanderHenderson Very very funny. I did not see that coming. But your premise "you are what you eat" is false, hence your argument is unsound.

@Lord_Farin That's why I subsist on a strict diet of milkweed, just like a monarch butterfly.

@Holo "Well-definedness of infinite Cartesian products implies the Banach-Tarski paradox! That's intuitively absurd!"

5:13 PM
@Lord_Farin I think Well-definedness of arbitrary product of cardinals implies even choice

A: Does "cardinal arithmetic is well-defined" imply axiom of choice?

Asaf KaragilaFirst let me answer the first question. Yes. It is possible. You can find the proof in Jech "The Axiom of Choice" in Theorems 11.2 and 11.3. Also you might be interested in reading Pincus' paper, David Pincus, Cardinal representatives, Israel J. Math. 18 (1974), 321--344. Where he shows tha...

5:39 PM
@Holo Got to go, but quick comment: Although that answer is useless to that question, there is an interesting issue it mentions, namely that ZFC cannot prove P(ω) < P(ω1), called Luzin's hypothesis. Only under GCH can we prove it, so if one doubts GCH then cardinality may not capture size. On the other hand, one might say that 'bigger' shouldn't necessarily imply 'more' subsets...
@XanderHenderson I just realized I have to agree with your claims, despite your unsound justifications, because there are no unicorns. Hence rainbow unicorns are the tastiest of them, and every unicorn is a vegetable...

Yay! Vacuously true statements!
It might be worth mentioning that the "Close Review Queue" is currently sitting at over 400 review items.
(For those that have an interest in trying to tame that queue.)

@Holo The bad answer is gone now.

5:59 PM
I don't find this answer terrible useful, as it is a bunch of text-as-images. The content of those images might be useful, but such answers are not a good fit fore MSE.

@JoséCarlosSantos Thanks
