@rschwieb In this particular example , I agree the delete-vote despite the age of the question and the feedback.

This non answer can be deleted now.

@Peter On what rationale? Why is it worth spending 9+ delete votes when the same votes could be used to uncontroversially eliminate three bad questions from this week? It is also pretty likely it would not have trouble getting undeleted should it become deleted.

I am lobbying to have this question re-opened. The stated reason for its closure was (apparently) that the posting was deemed a puzzle, rather than a Math problem. I disagree. Although the posed problem is (potentially) very challenging, I regard it as a problem in Logic and Probability, which is fair game for the MathSE forum.
It It may be that the final answer does not allow guaranteeing survival on your next move. Rather, the optimal move might be one that represents the best reward vs risk ratio. For what it's worth, if I the problem is re-opened, I have already left a comment indicating how I think that the OP should improve the posting.

@rschwieb Really bad question should vanish no matter how old they are. Therefore the votes are not "wasted". But I agree that the focus should be on the new questions. Most of them were deleted or at least closed, but apparently some questions are exceptions and even the moderators are not consequent enough to act properly.

@Peter It is because there is no support for revisionist history here, with good reason. It has obvious flaws, both logistical and philosophical.

Hi, friendly network moderator dropping in after seeing some flagged messages here.
@JoséCarlosSantos @user1046533 I think you've both somewhat misunderstood each other. José didn't say the answer is spam, he called it a non-answer. The "you" in this message seems to be an impersonal you, not meaning José specifically, but rather that people generally shouldn't use this room to get posts deleted merely because they disagree with them.

Hopefully, my message above helps to resolve the misunderstanding over "you" that seemed to be flaring up :-) If you're both good with that, I can delete the later messages that escalated the argument? @JoséCarlosSantos @user1046533
Yes, agreed.

This old question is a good dupe target for math.stackexchange.com/q/4505856; this seems like a potential FAQ / canonical Q&A. It probably needs a better answer, but I would be in favor of reopening. Directly proving $(-a)^2 = a^2$‭ - Frank Vel‭ 2016-08-02 15:25:09Z
Oh, wait... nevermind... I confused the parentheses.
Hrm... I can't find a dupe target for the newer question. It seems like there should be one.

@Randal'Thor It's fine for me.

@JoséCarlosSantos I don't that particular answer as being any worse than some of the other answers to that question, e.g. math.stackexchange.com/a/1232893 (which is a numerical approximation using MATLAB) or math.stackexchange.com/a/45090 (which is, ultimately, just a link to WA).

@XanderHenderson I fully agree. And I have flagged the first one hours ago. Maybe that I will do the same with the other one.

Q: What are the likely fruitful approaches and challenges to be overcome, when tackling this Group cohomology representation of the Collatz conjecture?

samerivertwiceOver the past months I've moved my study of the Collatz conjecture forward to a relatively coherent place which looks like it could be a powerful cohomological framework for tackling Collatz-like problems in general. It seemed like a good milestone to stop and ask directions - I'd appreciate any...

Hi guys, I hope you're all staying safe and well. Comments about the actual maths would be appreciated in accompaniment of any downvotes.
