Q: Is there a convex function smaller than a given function.

user236626If $g(x)$ is positive on $(0,\infty)$ and $g(x)\to \infty$ as $x\to \infty$. Is there a convex function $h(x)$ on $(0,\infty)$ such that $h(x)\le g(x), h(x)\to \infty$ as $x\to \infty$. I didn't know how to solve this one. But I find a solution says that $h(x)$ exists iff $\liminf_{x\to \infty} ...

This question was wrongly closed as a duplicate years ago. I have put a reopen vote. The linked question says $x\to 0$, while this says $x\to\infty$. Huge difference.

I would like to suggest that this question be closed. It has previously been closed (and reopened, and so on), but it continues to attract no meaningful discussion, nor any answers. I don't think that it is an appropriate question for this site.
On the other hand, closure has been controversial in the past, so I am not in a position where I am comfortable acting unilaterally.

@JitendraSingh I voted to close as off topic on math.se. It could be asked, I guess, and matheducators.se. But as you suggest, it seems to be somewhat opinion based.

@XanderHenderson How do you use it? I've used vinegar to do the same; can you buy "citric acid", or to you use lemons, or lemon concentrate ?
 
@amWhy Something very juicy that you should know : I'll write you a mail by the end of today. I should have done it by now, but there was an incident in a football game I was watching and a football player collapsed on the pitch with potentially a cardiac arrest, so I was so shocked I didn't even get to work till now!
The player is apparently OK now, but it was still quite shocking to see.

@amWhy You can buy citric acid powder pretty cheaply (approx $10 per pound).
two or three tablespoons in the tank with a quart of water
run that through the system, then flush it all out with another couple of quarts of water

@user2661923 I disagree. All they did was post images. You did nothing to help prior to answering. Also, we expect users to disclose when they happen to ask for a reopening of a question they answer. Since you hadn't, I'd like to offer that, at least in part, as a reason for your request here.
 
The solution image that they posted was their own work. The only deficiency is that they did not use mathJax. Instead, they displayed their work in an image.
 
@user2661923 No one can answer, via a link. No one should rely on links only to state the question, nor to show work. Please be reasonable.
 
My reason for requesting that the question be re-opened, is that the only justification that I can see for closing the question is that mathJax wasn't used. I totally disagree. New users who are unfamiliar with mathJax can certainly show work via an image.
 
@user2661923 You answered the question when it already had two downvotes a lots of close votes, and despite feedback to other answerers. I have no interest in helping you protect your answer.
@user2661923 Any one of three answerers could have, prior to answering, embedded the images in the post. You all chose to rush to answer, before even considering the quality of the post; that itself is a violation of the EoQS. And showing effort is not the Cadillac of context. @Xander, please chime in if/when you have the chance. @user2661923 askers should not depend on users' chasing of their links, without which, there is no question.

I am still requesting that the question be re-opened. It now has nothing to do with protecting an answer. I promise not to re-post an answer to this question, if the question is re-opened. I am attempting to prevent questions that show work from being closed, when the only criticism is that the new user did not use mathJax.
 
Plenty of new users post questions "I am trying to factor x^2 + 8x + 16. Does that mean the same as solving the question x^2+ 8x+16 = 0? Are factors always zeros?" I'm not hard on the non use of mathjax. But I do not like laziness, in questions or in answers.
 
You are reaching. This user showed work. The fact is that if mathjax had been used, the question would not have been closed. now you are pretending otherwise, namely that the new user did not show a reasonable amount of work.
 
@user2661923 I cannot open up that question and understand what is being asked.
All of the vital information is hidden behind links.
That, alone, is sufficient for closure.
The fact that several users chose to answer the question---despite the fact that it is impossible to know what is being asked by simply reading the question---is disappointing.
And now that I have investigated further, the question is about compounding interest. Surely this has already been asked and answered on Math SE at least once in the past, n'est-ce pas?

So, it is sufficient to close a question because a new user did not know how to use mathjax and did not know how to embed the images directly into the question? Really?

Ideally, the process is:
1. A new user posts a low-quality question.
2. The question is closed, and people leave comments, suggesting improvements.
3. The asker makes improvements (or some other good samaritan helps them out, and makes improvements as suggested in such comments).
4. The question is reopened, and folk are given the opportunity to answer.

@Xander I've left only two EoQS flags, both on the same user, so it would be nice if they could be handled together. I have no way to modify a flag to include an earlier link. Please ask how many links to include in one flag? (Per quid's demand), yet others have said they need only check the users profile. So first and foremost, get the mod crew on the same page, else the various preference expressed by you, quid, Pedro, etc., are crazy making, because you moderators make it impossible
to satisfy all of you. And that is not regular ole users problem. That is a mod problem. @quid ditto.
 
@amWhy you could include the old one in the new (and retract the old one). I don't say that needs to be done, but it'd be possible.
