The OP (according to the profile page) was not seen here since posting the question. So the question might cause discussion on meta and few rounds of closing and reopening while the poster might not be interested in it anymore. (However, it is difficult to say for unregistered users.)

By the way I'm curious why you ping yourself?

The ping has two effects. 1) It notifies the user. 2) It adds a small arrow at the beginning of the message. (It is supposed to indicate to what the message reacts.)

I guess the second possibility is more important when I reply to my own message.
