@Sam @gschenk and any other toronto people: just how bad is the bike theft issue?
My parents and I have been arguing about it all day
I have a very very strong desire to bring my full squish, but there is indeed that risk, as much as I would like to ignore it...

@Criggie It's "Kettler", the L has fallen off 😄 Kettler is the company, Alu is Aluminum, and Rad means wheel or bicycle. So Kettler Aluminum Bicycle. Which is brand and description in one 😉 Kettler is famous for making pedal-powered 4wheelers for kids called "Kettcars", which are totally awesome, but sadly the company is gone.
OK I wondered if it was made to look distressed. No, its just old.
I wonder if theres a story behind the trailer hitch
There's a million bikes like that here, old and with trailer hitches. The only thing special is the front wheel
My little cousins once got one like this images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51cNHRM1XML.jpg I sat down in the seat, put the cousins on the mudflaps left and right, and blasted down the street at crazy speed, took a sharp turn, and crashed immediately. I was so scared of having injured them but they loved it 😁

@Erlkoenig The pictured trailer hitch has part of the trailer dangling in it - that's the part I found odd.

As a cycling enthusiast, you cannot _not_ bring at least one bike to Toronto. As an introduction to cycling in Toronto, start just north of Yonge-and-Bloor (where street numbering zeroes) and ride, say, to Edwards Gardens (https://goo.gl/maps/Y3KYQ3DoZCbBAqCv6). You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll leave a concrete jungle into a forest.
As for the theft problem: it varies. If you’re with cyclists away from downtown, many leave competition-level bikes unlocked. But if you’re commuting and will leave a bike for hours downtown, then you must:
To plan your routes it is, as usual, a good idea to take a hint from Strava's heatmap.

@Criggie Oh indeed, but I think i have seen that before. Perhaps the intended coupling mechanism doesn't work and this is a workaround

@DavidW Aug 21: " "aluminum" => "aluminium" isn't a valid edit, since there's nothing wrong with "aluminum. """
didn’t he edit the other way around? Or was that someone else?
YEah, so if the word was originally spelled aluminium, then putting it back would be totally accecptable. which is why I approved the edit. You want to speak to Ted about the validity of aluminium, but I think it's all good cos he accepted the edit too.
aluminum looks completely wrong
THEY'RE BOTH FINE

aluminum is only used by that British colony, isn’t it? :D
do they also say Einsteinum and Helum?
18:39
no they don't
19:05
@Swifty Sorry, yes, you're correct and I didn't look closely enough before rejecting the edit.
We don't often get partial rollbacks in review though, so I wasn't looking for that.
Sealant bubbling out of spoke holes near valve. Seems like I have trouble with rim tape.

@MaplePanda that's not easy to answer. There weren't many nice bikes locked on the street. Very much unlike Munich where more bikes and much more valuable bikes stand outside overnight.
In general locks were also better in Toronto, except for rotten BSO. This means at least people are more afraid of theft.
A neighbor has a nice custom bike with Rohloff hub and it's never locked to anything... Somebody likes to live dangerously
I doubt statistics in Toronto cause it seems to me bikes are rarely insured in Toronto and the general oppinion is police does not care about it.
(The biggest bike thief in Toronto was found out by coincidence when their building collapsed under the load of stolen bikes. Shady guy running a shady bike shop should have been easy for police to find years and years if they cared at all.)
you gotta look after your own stuff.
Personal experience: My moderately nice (XT hard tail) bike was not stolen in two years. A little outside, at Bloor and Dufferin. SImple short shackle U-lock.
Posts to lock bikes are really good in T.
I met two guys involved in theft.
Was up late (gaming) and heard a thief coming with their truck. I went outside and asked him to be so kind to refrain from taking bikes. I received a polite reply and we wished each other a good night.

They didn't beat your lights out?

At a different occasion I had a brief chat with a scout. I've heard him describe things worth stealing on the phone.
@Erlkoenig Evidently Toronto is a very civilised place indeed
I've asked him how that works and he told me he gets a fiver per street with good marks. He told me he was quite good at it. And has different customers for different kind of information. What is more, it is the most pleasant ways to fund his drug addiction.
@Erlkoenig well, I was all the more courageous since I was standing on a balcony while the thiev was two stories down and somewhat encumbered by bikes.
Considering that certain people are ready to murder you if you slow them down for 3sec, I'd expect a criminal to perform major skull reorganization for interfering with their business
