@200_success Yes, but "Normal mode" seems to be Vim-speak. Look at the nvi manual, and it doesn't mention "normal mode" at all ... There was already some confusion where I "fixed" the insert-mode tag to change command-mode to normal-mode, and someone changed it back... I agree this is rather unfortunate... — Carpetsmoker 5 mins ago
@Carpetsmoker You're right: The vi man page for Solaris, for example, prefers "command mode" (but makes a passing reference to "normal and initial mode").
I blame Bram :-(
Well, it is Vi Improved, right?
I have no preference over normal-mode vs. command-mode as such; I chose command-mode because it's used by all vi editors, while normal-mode isn't
02:02
Some synonym is in order.
So it would be more "inclusive", so to speak .... but on the other hand, normal-mode is used more often, and many Vimmers don't know about command-mode, as such
hmm
There need to be at least 5 questions or something to create a tag synonym
You need a tag score of 5 to suggest a synonym.
That's why I'm building a list outside the system for now.
"Creating a tag synonym requires 5 score in this tag"
ah :-)
Well, we'll see if we survive the private beta in a few days ...
I'm not 100% confident in that ... so maybe a bit too soon to worry too much about it now
02:08
Any objection to for now?
Word completion will find it either way.
meh
Just leave it at normal-mode
I would say
This is even more confusing

200 questions btw

@Doorknob Re: function name: The syscall to shut down BSD systems is called die_you_gravy_sucking_pig_dog() ...
But not in OSX:
#ifdef __APPLE__
void log_and_exec_reboot_or_halt(void);
#else
void die_you_gravy_sucking_pig_dog(void);
#endif

@Carpetsmoker Hahaha that's amazing.

Hi guys, is there any reason the ide tag even exists? It seems way too broad and most questions tagged as ide have nothing to do with using vim as an ide. Might as well change the ide tag to text-editor (joke). An example of this is: vi.stackexchange.com/questions/636/…. What does this question have anything remotely to do with using Vim as an ide?
05:43
@Akshay hmm
Wikipedia says:
"An integrated development environment (IDE) or interactive development environment is a software application that provides comprehensive facilities to computer programmers for software development. An IDE normally consists of a source code editor, build automation tools and a debugger. Most modern IDEs have intelligent code completion."
So I would say questions that are about using Vim for programming, and features that are related to that ...
But yes, it's very broad
I think @200_success created this tag btw.
06:10
I suppose we can keep the ide tag for questions related to debugging, code completion and ones that actually ask for ide-like features. Vim is not an IDE. It doesn't have a debugger, and you can argue that it lacks "intellisense" code complete. Besides, most questions currently tagged as IDE are actually related to formatting and text editing features, and not making Vim act like an IDE. I only found two questions about autocompletion that probably apply.
Well, there are plugins to work with gdb, and you have things like the syntastic plugin, which allow debugging ...
@Carpetsmoker right, there are plugins. Most IDEs come built in with a debugger and intellisense completion. I grant you, if there are questions that actually ask for those, an ide tag is appropriate. I'm just saying they shouldn't be applied to questions that ask for something like textwidth and equalprg.

Q: Tag [programming] and related

yo'I think we have some tag confusion that should be resolved as soon as possible. (Maybe I'm just too cautious, but we all know how mass tag edits are bad.) It's programming. From this tag name, it's completely unclear whether it means: Using vi for programming whatever you program. Programming ...

The ide tag is fine, however, I would refrain from tagging questions as ide unless they specifically ask for IDE like features such as a debugger, intelligent code completion, and other features that are only IDE-specific. Vim is not an IDE. And I would argue that ide is very broad AND is LIKELY to be misinterpreted. — Akshay 1 min ago
@Akshay Any suggestions for a general tag for programming? Or do you think we don't need one?
10:32
@200_success Honestly, I don't think we need one currently as we can just use a more specific tag instead. I'm not too sure why we need a programming tag at all or a more general one for it. Any tags based on it will be too broad anyway.
10:49
OK, thanks.
11:17
I supposed most of the questions are about things like moving text, or substituting something, or some such ... That it happens to be in the context of programming, is not really that interesting

Do we need a tag? Is sufficient? Or ?

My vote would be for diff-merge
