@jrg It wasn't horrible. I've heard a whole lot worse from his Royal Dreadfulness, but there were several things he kept poking that really aren't his job and things that aren't the governments job.
jrg
jrg
@RPi_Awesomeness so the normal stuff that comes from the president.
ok
He kept guilt-tripping on minimum wage and the whole "It's for teh Children!" aspect of these things he wants passed.
@jrg Basically, yeah.
He kept using I & me in situations where the president should have no power.
jrg
jrg
lol
The first 5-10 minutes was dreadful. Basically every statement he made was standing ovated for extended periods.
jrg
jrg
so for minimum wage, the minimum wage was originally created to encourage high school/college students to go out and actually get a job.
was never supposed to be able to support a family of 4.
or 1.
03:38
@jrg Precisely
yeah well if companies wouldn't take it as an excuse to not pay people..
He was making it sound like Vacations and new cars were a right.
jrg
jrg
On the other hand, employers have been poor stewards of that.
@Seth right as well.
that's why Taylor Swift is right. A machine will take your job, then your life.
@Seth Oh, yeah.
jrg
jrg
;p
03:39
Boy. Gotta love this country! facepalm
jrg
jrg
20 messages moved from Ask Ubuntu General Room
Unions and minimum wage. Both good things when they were introduced, but probably should be limited greatly or removed entirely now. :)
Ah yes, jrg and his politics rooms :P
2
jrg
jrg
So let me rephrase the union thing:
Basketball players don't need a union.
Not the first time I've been moved here ;P
jrg
jrg
03:40
coal miners do.
@Seth lol
baseball players don't.
@jrg Are you kidding me. Don't even get me started on sports & their pay
jrg
jrg
utility workers (electric) do.
Ugh. It's ridiculous
Multi-million dollar contracts for just throwing a ball around is ridiculous.
the trash service workers, etc.
jrg
jrg
OK, so battery is about to die.
but tl;dr: Yeah, it's messed up.
03:42
Yes. Low-wage jobs could benefit from Unions, but the power unions have needs to be greatly reduced.
jrg
jrg
Nah, high risk jobs benefit from unions.
It was good in the 19th and 20th century with new factories and whatnot before people knew what was going on and what could happen - now, not so much.
^^ that
There was an article about how companies like King Arthur Flour took good care of their communities and their employees. Can't find it now though :/
jrg
jrg
@Seth so to a large extent
you can make people happier with cruddy conditions by letting them own part of the company
employee-owned companies are likely to be more stable
And there are always the exception companies
jrg
jrg
03:43
employees are happier, etc.
that was part of it, but it was even better than that.
Boy. It's nice to actually talk to people with a similar mind-set when it comes to politics
jrg
jrg
@Seth right, but it's a place to start.
true
If I had made that BS-o-meter comment on The Bridge I would have been murdered digitally in many ways.
jrg
jrg
03:44
@RPi_Awesomeness nah, it's nice to talk to someone who agrees something is wrong. How to fix it, we can squabble about. But people who aren't content with the status quo, that's nice.
@jrg Bingo.
@RPi_Awesomeness Don't get all excited yet ;)
anyway, I gotta go eat, head is spinning.
jrg
jrg
Ok, later.
talk to you guys later.
jrg
jrg
need to charge laptop.
03:45
Now, let's hope Title II passes
fair enough :)
jrg
jrg
@RPi_Awesomeness well, yeah. that'll be a close one.
jrg
jrg
I hope you call your congresscritters.
It just makes so much sense. Internet access is most definitely a utility.
And just compare Telephone (remained classified as Title II) to the rest of the world. We've got the best cellphone networks/speeds in the world.
Investing hasn't stopped. When we look at the state of internet access/ISPs in the USA, though, it's a different story.
They said they needed to be re-classified as non-Title II to "be able to invest and expand". Look where we are now :P
jrg
jrg
04:23
So this is the thing nobody seems to care about with Title II: Taxes.
Prices will go up.
Not because of cost, but because of taxes
04:41
that is true
