@DanielFischer: I think this should be locked. There is something fishy going on. The asker not only failed to respond to the multiple requests for the source of the problem (there were at least 3 comments to that effect), but also posted another contest-style question in the meantime. The asker has also been suspended for voting irregularities. And the bad question was even edited yesterday to remove the contest-math tag, and voted for undeletion!

9:57 AM
@user21820 Since wasn't added by the OP, removing that tag isn't so bad. I don't think the situation there is yet problematic enough to wield the big hammer that locking is.

Okay.
I know the tag wasn't added by the asker, but it's obvious.
And so removing the tag is fishy.
That's, of course, my opinion.
Oh well. I just went to look and saw that the dust hasn't settled on Meta, so I guess locking would result in some people making a bigger fuss.

10:16 AM
@user21820 Yes, it's pretty obvious that the tag is appropriate. But since it was added by somebody else, removing it is less fishy than if it had been on the original question.

Yea.

Who is the mod here?
May I ask something?

5:52 PM
@Jasmine Welcome! You can certainly ask something here. Please do ask what you need to ask so that a mod, if needed, can answer your question directly. But you need to be patient, because a mod is not always here. Here are the diamond/elected moderators of this site.

6:21 PM
@DanielFischer "I don't think the situation there is yet problematic enough ... ". Is that because a colleague answered the question? And you don't want to bruise a colleagues ego?

6:41 PM
I just ask because there is a clear disparity in how questions answered by a mod (or two mods) are dealt with, vs. how questions not answered by a mod fare.

6:55 PM
@amWhy It's because so far there is nothing beyond a run-of-the-mill disagreement between some users whether that question should be deleted or not. If it escalates, moderator intervention may become necessary. So far it isn't.

@DanielFischer I can accept that. Thanks, @DanielFischer.

@amWhy @DanielFischer: I don't believe that \left( and \right) add height to a title. They are supposed to match what is inside of them. However, I have not looked at the question in question, but if there is a ^2 on the parenthesized formula, then that will be lifted.
Ah... they could have used $\sin(1/x)$ in the title

8:49 PM
@robjohn Depends on what's inside. \left and \right can make the parentheses (brackets …) quite a bit larger than needed. There are some examples (and an explanation why that happens, I think) on TeX - LaTeX. Some experts recommend avoiding \left and always using \bigl and friends.

9:02 PM
@DanielFischer By default, \left[ and \right] try to preserve the centerline: $\left[\frac{\sum\limits_{k=1}^{100}\frac1k}2\right]$. This can be circumvented using \vcenter: $\left[\vcenter{\frac{\sum\limits_{k=1}^{100}\frac1k}2}\right]$, but sometimes the staggering of the centerlines is not pleasant.

So... someone who has been around for 9 months and has over 1k XP is a new contributer. Interesting.
Ah... they are new to meta.
Weird...

Yeah: I sort of find the "New Contributor" designation silly. I'm quite sure even many new users to main or meta don't like the blatant "DRAW ATTENTION TO THIS FIRST TIME POSTER" stamp, either.

I thought that we were supposed to vote, comment, and otherwise interact with the questions, not the users.

Doesn't the "New Contributor" designation kind of defeat that?

@XanderHenderson Good point.

10:51 PM
Let's see how it works.

11:45 PM
@quid Of course. I am just voicing my skepticism. I am worried that the "New Contributor" designation is going to have little effect on how these new contributors are treated (for example, I would like to believe that I treat everyone equally poorly), and will give new ammunition to a certain vocal contingent on Meta.
But I am prepared to be surprised!

Q: Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!

Tim Post This feature is now live across the network. We've been doing quite a bit of research into ways that we could help new users have better experiences that ultimately lead them to becoming increasingly valuable, long-term contributors to our sites. While this is still ongoing, it's starting to...

@XanderHenderson I am a bit torn. In a way we have the implicit idea the we explain to new user a bit more since always. Of course within reasonable (relatively tight, in fact) limits. In that sense it's old hat.
Then the hand logo looks a bit "dangerous." Maybe one could do without that at least.
Especially on out color theme. In the "white on blue" in the meta post it's better.

To be fair quid, can we have custom stamps for "established user" and "trusted users," too?

@amWhy it would arguably be redundant with the points, which almost can be said for that indicator too.

Well, that's my point! :)
@Shog9 also deleted some good points I made on meta.se, in comments, because he couldn't, or wouldn't answer my valid observations on MSE.
