why do everyone close vote 11.10 question that still can be answered?! askubuntu.com/q/306967/10698
I understand close votes on problems in the system but this mustn't be closed...
Like why aren't all questions with the 11.10 tag closed then?
11.10 is EOL.
New questions about EOL releases are supposed to be closed.
pokes @Alvar with the EOL stamp
but it's answerable
but it's EOL.
19:04
@Alvar EOL releases aren't supported here save for EOL upgrading
and has really nothing to do with 11.10 :P
@Alvar doesn't matter
Mint questions are also answerable.
lol
@FEichinger but offtopic
@Alvar anything EOL loses support on here
anything not official derivative also doesn't get support
19:05
@TheLordofTime Yep. Which is what I'm saying: Just because it's answerable, doesn't make it on-topic.
@FEichinger i know i was using the highlight to finish your thought ;)
well it will be the same answer for a long time
@FEichinger remember, i created the EOL notice for hardy, oneiric, lucid desktop
:P
the question hasn't reached EOL
@Alvar the release they're asking the question about has
19:06
just the distro..
E: Unable to locate package tor-browser <-- that could be because E: No Repos
@TheLordofTime but not the program and not the question and not the answer..
@TheLordofTime no
@Alvar we can argue here, or you can move it to meta
TBH i'd like to see this in meta with mods answering it
because mods make the rules, not me, not you, not several of us, the mods and the community team
19:07
but this one makes no sense..
i make my bed in the morning. 'nething wrong?
@TheLordofTime Aaactually, "several of us" are supposed to make the rules. In fact, that's why we have meta in the first place.
;)
@FEichinger true, but the support of eol stuff and what determines EOL offtopic questions isn't exactly our decision
@Alvar advice: don't try and be even joking about those things, i'm a tad grumpy :P
@TheLordofTime ok sorry bro ;)
19:08
@Alvar To me, it very much does.
@FEichinger it makes sense to me too (see the retag)
well I joke about everything and doesn't take it to hard if you joke about me or my believes.
@Alvar that's quite funny
@Alvar i'm not, i'm just in a meh mood
@Alvar 11.10 don't get security updates, and I personally think that it should be upgraded. But +1 for answering :-)
19:10
@jokerdino well if you are the only one that like macs, use mostly windows, and is coding in java. And also hang in an Ubuntu community that hate all of these things, you have to be a bit relaxed...
@Mitch well, it's still answerable the answer will eb pretty much the same for eveyr versyion..
o got an idea
lets make it universal for every release!
@Alvar Hmm. That certainly might.. I'll have to look at it.
@Alvar I agree, but I tried answering a couple of questions like that, and they got closed before I could blink, so I kinda gave up on them.
updated!
@Mitch I understand, but this could work! :)
@Seth how about now?
Hmm.
@Seth crap just noticed it's a duplicate...
19:17
I wanted to play the file over the server, not serve music. But that's still quite interesting.
@Alvar Eh?
@Seth well you can have the server on the server. And then connect via the local ip (or global ip if u have a domain name) to use it
u can also add new radio stations from the GUI.
all that work for nothing! :( it's already been done, at least it's a good answer to a soon to be closed question
Can I get some support for this feature request? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/173694/…
19:38
@Seth i flagged it as NaA
but yes it is spam
It's that site again too.
Gone now.
And that username.
uhoh...
helpful flags: 666

^ that was on my profile page
:O
that's not much ;)

j0h
LOL, trying to respond to a comment on a post, I saw "2 more to go" and thought it was a time limit, when really it was in need of 2 more characters.
19:41
@Alvar but the 666 is the evil.
so it's EVIL helpful flags.
@TheLordofTime define evil?!
@Alvar the hellspawn
@TheLordofTime Microsoft headquarters ?!
@j0h LOL. Yeah that can be a problem sometimes too.. sometimes they go bananas because of it.
&#127820
damn
hwo do you do the banana figure?
19:45
@Alvar in a way yes.
@TheLordofTime for me evil is where Unity is developed.. but that's maybe just me..
@Alvar except commandline is better than unity :P
@TheLordofTime WINDOWS IS BETTER THAN UNITY!
;)
I actually hate unity more than windows..
@Alvar BLASPHEMY!
@TheLordofTime ;)
19:46
UNITY IS AWESOME
IT'S THE WORST THING EVER CREATED.
it's useless and uses more time than anything else. (maybe windows 8 is worse but havent used it)..
@JorgeCastro THIS
That's funny it's pretty useful for me
@Alvar Whoa, whoa, whoa. Napalm is better than Unity? O_o
I click on icons, and it launches apps
19:48
@Seth yes
@JorgeCastro well it first displays apps you could install instead of the ones you have installed :S
that's weird..
@Alvar Only in the dash.. and you can turn that off.
mine shows both
huh..
I love the dash.
I hate Unity more than anything, the bar looks like an old and ugly version of the mac launch board..
19:49
🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 <-- Anyone see bananas?
Looks nothing like a mac to me
@Seth no squares
and I find the bar useful
just unicode boxes from crap, @Seth
19:50
@Seth squares here
@JorgeCastro well it's just uglier..
Yeah.. Only Windoze folks see bananas I'm guessing..
shrug, that's just your opinion
@JorgeCastro exactly.. :)
@JorgeCastro I'm glad you don't flame and rage about it, a lot do..
@Seth I'm on windows and only see squares..
Huh.
Good grief flags.
19:51
@Alvar Most people only rage at reasonable things
@JorgeCastro tss
if your argument that Unity sucks is "I don't like the colors" then there's really not much to argue about
@JorgeCastro well hating Unity when others love it tends to draw up feelings
@TheLordofTime no
@JorgeCastro What do you think of Windows 8?
I only used it on a tablet
on that surface thing
felt half-finished
19:53
It is.
@JorgeCastro well it's also that it's slower than the classic desktop, it takes up more screen than classic, you dont have a "desktop" like the classic desktop. I love the classic desktop.
MS has a new way of releasing half finished things and then patching in an update.
@Alvar Slower? Are you kidding me?
@Seth no
a) It takes up way less screen than classic
I measured
@JorgeCastro not for me..
19:54
@Alvar Heh. You must have an old computer.
@Seth no
Weird.
It's blazing fast for me.
well it takes longer to search for an app and find it than using the classic interface..
19:55
OK I'm lost.
and having direct buttons in a bar is easier for me.
Are we talking about Windows 8 now?
@Seth yeah nvm man..
no unity vs classic
Classic doesn't have a search by default I thought.
@Seth yes
19:55
it doesn't
@Seth u dont need it
you can put shortcuts on the new launcher
u have all your apps in a menu instead
So how can search be faster in Classic?
@JorgeCastro yes and u can do the same in teh classic..
19:56
If it doesn't even have it?
@Seth u dont search u click it..
@Seth u dont need it, since u click and find it..
So instead of Super -> typing -> enter you do click click click, hover, click?
no click, click find it
or use the shortcuts in the upper bar
I've never had that experience with classic.
nested menus aren't my idea of a good time
19:57
It was always "I'm lost in a maze of menus ATM, I'll get back to you later"
@JorgeCastro well I never use them..
i always used the shortcuts in the upper bar
If people liked nested menus they'd use Yahoo instead of Google
3
"First, computers and technology, then operating systems, then Ubuntu, then askubuntu."
or you could just type in google and go where you need to go
@JorgeCastro Who doesn't just do Alt-D now-a-days?
@JorgeCastro not the nested menus but the clean desktop with upper and lower bar, upper for your shortcuts and apps and system info and lower for windows..
that's a waste of space, I like it combined into one
19:59
@JorgeCastro Agreed
Unity's keyboard shortcuts are way better too.
@JorgeCastro that's not the classic desktop dude.
There's many things wrong with Unity. Dash is not one of them.
I don't like Unity can we leave it at that?
I found awesome last week, it's kind of cool
20:00
well, you're the one talking smack about it
if you're going to make stuff up about something at least be able to defend it!

A: What different desktop environments and shells are available?

Chan-Ho SuhAwesome Features Awesome is a desktop environment which masquerades as a window manager. By default, it comes with a basic top panel with a systray that can hold your favorite applets from Gnome, Xfce, etc. There are several well-known "widget" libraries which extend Awesome's basic functi...

@JorgeCastro i am but u dont agree with me so it's kind of pointless to argue..
Are you on mobile or tablet?
when we just disagree about evrything about Unity..
I don't agree with you because you're making statements like "WINDOWS IS BETTER THAN UNITY" without any science
@Seth laptop
20:01
@Alvar "ARE" and "YOU" then please ;)
@Seth !?!??!

@JorgeCastro i am but u dont agree with me so it's kind of pointless to argue..
5 mins ago, by Alvar
@Seth u dont need it, since u click and find it..
6 mins ago, by Alvar
@Seth u dont search u click it..
@JorgeCastro I don't like the bar since it looks like an ugly version fo the mac bar. I don't like the dash since it displays thing I don't want like what apps are available, I jsut want shortcuts for my apps.
i need dinner / lunch.. not more beer...
Doesn't look like Mac to me.. So subjective.
if only there was a way to pink or lock things to the launcher
that would be ideal!
20:03
@Seth exactly..
@JorgeCastro You can lock things to the launcher..
well I would like to have my desktop back with things on it..
@Seth I was joking. :)
Oh.. OK ;)

Q: Inconsistent flag handling about questions in other languages

Radu RădeanuI think that the scope of a flag is to make moderators aware of content that request their intervention. And also I think that this site really only support English. Now, some of moderators can find helpful if I flag a non-English question and some of them send me to translate the content (I will...

I can SSH into my server from my laptop just fine..
But when I do it from my phone the server closes the connection after the first command
How would I troubleshoot this?
good question ... well asked ... no idea!
:)
It's kind of weird alright.
22:38
hi all
Hello
@Seth I made the text bold in this question only to distinguish the question text towards the picture text
...but if u like wthout body, no problem, I quit at my case
yeah, the pictures are hard to distinguish from the text, but making it bold makes the text bad... No one here that I know likes bold text except for headers.
@RaduRădeanu There I fixed it. Or at least made it better.
ok, i didn'n know that no one here likes bold text
Yeah.. Especially have the update ( bold got worse after that.. )
Adding some horizontal lines seems to have fixed the issue though: meta.askubuntu.com/revisions/6839/8
22:51
ah, bravo, i didt't thought at horizontal lines
:)
23:08
...in case if you use an android phone
Hey guys Google Drive for Linux just some signatures. change.org/en-GB/petitions/…
I'm not telling you to do so, but you can open an incognito window on Google Chrome or private window on Firefox so you will be able to sign it infinitely.
There is a post about this page on OMGUbuntu! omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/06/google-drive-for-linux-petition
@Marco: Considering that 2buntu now has a public API, would you accept a patch that adds onebox support for articles?
Note to everyone: the new theme I helped create for Ubuntu Discourse is live.
@Zignd I think if you sign one time is enough: you+your friends+their friends=~10000 :)
23:41
is it true that rasberry pi does not support ubuntu? But it does support debian
Raspbian is a Debian variant based on the ARM hard-float (armhf)-Debian 7 'Wheezy' architecture port but optimized for the ARMv6 instruction set of the Raspberry Pi hardware. Raspbian is a portmanteau of Raspberry Pi and Debian. Raspbian is free software. It provides over 35,000 available deb software packages, pre-compiled software bundled for easy installation on a Raspberry Pi computer, specifically tuned for optimal performance on the Raspberry Pi ARM11 hardware. The Raspbian Linux distribution basically contains the LXDE desktop environment, the Openbox window manager, the Midori web...
you think we could ask raspbian questions on askubuntu?
