@djeikyb have you tried disabling vsync in ccsm?
hi
@Takkat not running gnome
or unity for that matter
hiya @TheX
That does matter. Nevermind.
hi @TheX
yeah, it's weird. it's the difference between software rendering and actually using the graphics card
i'm just not sure where to report it. looking through launchpad now
13:35
@OctavianDamiean Did you ever hear back from Joey @ OMG Ubuntu regarding the "copyright" issue on that one Skype question?
0
Q: Tried to build GEDIT on a fresh Ubuntu 10.4 last night. No Luck! Is there an easy way to install it?

Alex CHi Everyone. I'm very new to Ubuntu, when my girlfriend's Macbook Pro (32 bit v1,1) couldn't keep up with OSX any more I thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to learn how to Linux. I've got to admit that so far I'm really loving it (can't believe I've waited so long!) Anyways, I've tried doi...

I can not suppress a "why!?" when I see this q D:
@Rinzwind because everyone is not as smart as you and I...
but @TheX but but...
no @TheX unacceptable answer :D
it is true though...
oh
sigh ok :D
good reply @MarcoCeppi :) and yes your memory is flawless... it is the default.
13:46
@Rinzwind theres a GF involved. He is obviously trying to impress ;)
@KaustubhP that deserves a * :D
@KaustubhP don't you know that impressing the opposite sex is utterly futile....
I have a feeling that there is already a qusetion about installing software on Ubuntu
I just can't find it - I would really love to link to it
@TheX I know, I have been on the FAIL side, and the WIN side ;)
13:48
Ill have a look; I saw one with lots of pixs a few days ago @MarcoCeppi
@KaustubhP I am married I fail every 5 mins... whether I am trying to or not...
yeah, I have the same feeling that I've kind of seen this a few times
it's not a feeling :=) it's a fact >:)
@TheX haha! well, I am not! Sucks to be you :p
JK ;)
nah I am joking...
more like once a day...
@TheX any more desktop mods up your.... sleeve?
@KaustubhP nah...
the only think I have done with Unity so far is change my background...
I didn't ask you to + plus me :D :D I wanted to know why I was minned :D
Geez
lol
how do you know it was me?
@Rinzwind don't think of it - that just happens (but it nags) +'d you too ;P
13:55
cuz it went up +3 and there are 4 ppl in this chatroom
YOU DO THE MATH :D
@Rinzwind Well, he wants to find a file inside a zipped file. you answered how to search inside a folder?
@KaustubhP nope. folder search is only the -R part :*(
those zips can be in subdirs :=D
@Rinzwind Added some razzle dazzle for you
2
@KaustubhP zgrep can search inside of zip files - it's just not as well noted
4
Zgrep invokes grep on compressed or gzipped files. All options specified are passed directly to grep. If no file is specified, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep. Otherwise the given files are uncompressed if necessary and fed to grep. If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses it as the grep program to be invoked.
13:57
@MarcoCeppi oh, now I know.
Good classroom, this.
oooooh looks cool those links. I shall use them in future answers O+
zcat and zgrep are great tools
but I did not ` ` the grep itself cuz it was with things you do not want to paste anyways :)
For some reason people react better to formatting than not. I've found if I put links to everything possible, pictures when possible, and explanations for everything. Upvotes rain in
@MarcoCeppi oh that easy to answer! formatting is less stressing for the eyes to look at. Your eyes will instantly go to highlighted text but when there is not highlights it will try to read the whole text in 1 look
fyi! another 200+ rep day for me O+
14:01
hello all
@Rinzwind oh, ou are now a shrink?
:p
good afternoon!
hi @htorque waves
@KaustubhP I registered 11 days ago :=) so no :D
hehe!
for all you know, there will be a shrink.stackexchange.com :D
14:05
"data recovery program". That's fancy speak for "backup"? :D\
what is the policy on q's regarding documented software?
@Rinzwind what do you mean?

Q: I am looking for a eays to use data recovery program for ubuntu

mjriderI am looking for a easy to use, easy to install, data recovery application (like recuva) I have tried test disk and haven't figured out how to it. So my question is. does anyone know of a easy to use (including easy to install) data recovery application for ubuntu.

this one is explained on the ubuntu help page
@Rinzwind answer if you can, for some easy rep...
na just a comment is more then enough for this _O-
I want hard earned rep :X
kk but they all are not easy ;)
14:10
You point them to that link, as a reference
@Rinzwind if you don't do it someone else will
I got my 200 for today ;-)
@Rinzwind impressive :) keep it up!
whatever floats your boat
@KaustubhP you still rocking an awesome desktop mod?
112 to go for 2k O+
@TheX Aai, the one you taught me, sensei!
14:12
cool
@KaustubhP I upgraded my HD, re-installed Ubuntu, and have left it at the default... haven't taken the time to mod it yet...
echo gurka\\\\agurk
gurka\\agurk
bash O+
@TheX I still need some awesomeness for mine:(
oops, gotta go. messed my DB.
bye
does this stupid mscorsvw.exe task actually finish anytime in windows 7?
everytime the system goes idle that process uses 100 cpu :(
that's window memory management for you :X
.NET Runtime Optimization Service
as windows is crap, there is always optimization to do :P
@TheX thanks, afaik there's something similar in ubuntu... but that actually doesn't take over an hour (older computer)
@htorque if it is a computer problem, then don't blame it on the software :P
2.8ghz single core amd opteron with 2gb ram - old, but not stone age
just saying...
@TheX I was looking at the same page _O-
14:41
"Twitpic, a service where twitter users can post pictures, has made a deal with WENN (British newsagency) where they are allowed to sell these pictures without consent of the creator" what the fuck :X
@Rinzwind drop them like its hot...
reading the user agreement ftw
@Rinzwind think that is bad, check this out...2buntu.com/index.php/archives/654
at least twitpic told you first...
here's the full article (had to search for a non Dutch version for you lot :=) pressgazette.co.uk/…
Did they have to use a picture of Hannah Montanna? or whatever their name is
14:45
no those are the Olsen twins I think?
Backups restored :)
@Rinzwind wow, you know your pop!
I couldn't know Jennifer Spears from Rihanna Winslet.
@KaustubhP I watched their show when I was a little Rinzwind :-)
olsen twins? isn't that eurovision song contest?
Olsen Brothers (Danish: Brødrene Olsen) are a Danish rock/pop music duo, and are brothers Jørgen (born 15 March 1950) and "Noller" (Niels, born 13 April 1954) Olsen. They formed their first band, The Kids, in 1965. The Kids warmed up for The Kinks in the K.B. Hallen in 1965 and released their first single in 1967. Both Jørgen and Niels Olsen participated in the musical Hair in the Cirkusbygningen in Copenhagen March 1971, and went on tour afterwards through Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The Olsen Brothers' first album came out in 1972. To date they have released 12 albums. Their big hit ...

Cas
In answers I'm calling the Dash special mode (Alt+F2), 'Dash Run' is this ok?
15:51
use Run Dialogue
@JorgeCastro hai :D!
Cas
Cas
@RolandTaylor hmm that doesnt sound as succinct :)
@Cas but it's compatible with the fact that there are different interfaces for "running" on all the Desktop environments/shells
Cas
Cas
ahh i see what you mean but i was actually talking about unity specifically
I know :)
Cas
Cas
@Alaukik you edited one of my answers to use 'unity --reset' but that also resets config values. For restarting unity you just use 'unity'
16:02
hi
Cas
Cas
@TheX lo
i rather be hi

Q: Integrate Skype into Messaging Menu

user8951I know Skype is proprietary, but it would be awesome if it were to be integrated into messaging menu much like Pidgin, Empathy, etc. Is there a plug-in that does that?

16:39
dude there was one session today from the Design team called Color theory, man that one was awesome! Learn so much about colors in that one hour ... unbelievable
@OctavianDamiean That is one I would have been interested in.
@GeorgeEdison they've shared the slide used in that session
and I think you'll certainly find the recorded session somewhere soon
@MarcoCeppi it is alright for him
@MarcoCeppi here is the man
points at @d0od
hey @d0od
hi :)
@d0od so can we adapt the how-to for posting answers here?
16:54
@d0od Someone flagged the answer above as a potential copyright violation. Since OMGUbuntu is such a big news source for Ubuntu how would, if it's at all okay, one attribute source to OMG when it's used in an answer
@JorgeCastro you should use that People nearby feature of Empathy, it'd be easier to contact you :D
@MarcoCeppi Just 'source: omgubuntu.co.uk'
Great thanks. I'll make a post on meta to help set the presence for that going forward
appreciated :)
@d0od and can we adapt the how-to's ?
like add extra info or modify the wording
16:58
@Alaukik you'd have to make it crystal-clear that it is your modification
@OctavianDamiean so how should mention the source then ?
Cas
Cas
are instructions really copyright? modifying them with simple source attribution should be ok surely?
@Cas Yes - we only 'seek' simple source attribution even if it's no modified
what about screen-shots ?
@Alaukik Again, we're fine with them being used
Cas
Cas
17:03
@Alaukik i wondered that same thing
do they also require attribution ?
@Alaukik That would be polite I guess. It should be noted that some screenshots we use are provided by other people/tippers so that's a bit less clear-cut
@Alaukik Yeah, that's cool
@d0od thanks :)
17:14
@JorgeCastro how's the uds going for you? :D
the Ask Mark session was very interesting as well
that was the "how do you pronounce Oneiric" periode?
@OctavianDamiean where can i find a video of that ?
I hate unity trolls
they get on your nerves
@OctavianDamiean in which channel did he answer the questions?
@Alaukik I'm not sure if it is online already, maybe it is but I don't know where to be honest. @d0od do you know that maybe?
17:23
oooh Lubuntu is official? :D
cool
@htorque it was room 7, let me check it out
Jokai
yes exactly
so #ubuntu-uds-jokai
hmm and here I was thinking @htorque was talking Japanese :P
@Rinzwind cool but lubuntu rmx looks much better
17:25
Twice as good eh? :D
@Alaukik yea dude I should stop getting involved into comment discussions ... thats one of my weaknesses
@OctavianDamiean oh, that was an audio session - no irc from sabdfl
@htorque audio and video
@Rinzwind
nice :) :)
I like the bottom bar on the lefr side goes down
That 1st comment :D
@Rinzwind Awesome!
"It's like being awarded an Oscar!"
my sound card has now stopped working!!!11

Q: How can I fix my F11 and F12 keys? soundcard has stopped working

AlvarHi, pulseaudio crashed yesterday and ever since that my lower/raise system volume has stopped working. I've tried to reasign the keys and they work, and I have tried to reboot. What can I do to make it work? Now has my sound card stopped working at all, I can't hear any noise what so ever! :(

heeeeeeeeelp
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_PC/Eee_PC_1201N_Seashell/

My laptop...
@Alaukik it is your fault that I got involved in the comment discussion again!
thank you! :p
@OctavianDamiean you should always get involved in the comment section and attack the trolls!
17:35
heeeeeeelp
aaaaah
I agree! always take the trolls head on :)
@Alvar I am not going to be much help with your problem sorry :( searched for it but came up empty :(
@Alaukik which is what I do but I guess the definition of troll is subjective
@Rinzwind thanks anyway! :P
@OctavianDamiean common sense makes it easy
Can I have the first linux wirus? ;)
17:36
anyone attacking unity without any coherent reasons and ending it with natty sux
you have ya blue trolls and ya yellow trolls :D Black trolls are the hardest >:)
@RolandTaylor are you still there?
@Alvar reinstall? :-X Not my favourite answer though
@Alvar you missed that
@Alaukik forum.fok.nl/topic/1646274/2/100 2nd from the bottom: "Ubuntu sucks"... not much argueing with someone like that :(
17:39
@Rinzwind you should get in a battleground outside home territory !
a virus
1 hour and the community makes a specific virus disinfector script
ok time to cheer everyone up with a random pix!
Piotr Podgórski makes some interesting and not really wrong points in the comments tho
on some of it I have to agree but I still think that it is the right decision to get Unity to the users as I really don't think that only power-users and enthusiasts report bugs. I might be totally wrong there tho
@Alaukik eeeeeeeeeeuw :X
unity would never mature if kept as option/in a ppa
@htorque true!
@Rinzwind what?
17:43
@Alaukik that link you posted about that 777 thingy. :
eeeeuw :D
@htorque that is exactly my thinking but he still makes some good points about the user education for example
@Rinzwind the virus?
even if it hurts Ubuntu the way it is now (I don't really believe so), in the long run it will definitely help Ubuntu
@OctavianDamiean but the thing is if you have tried unity after 28 april
you will find it quite stable
17:46
@Alaukik and things like that make me afraid of installing random ppa's and debs :P
@Rinzwind that is so rare
@Alaukik indeed, believe me I'm the last person to bash Unity! It was stable prior 28 for me already and still is
True True. Plus these kind of things are limited to a few machines too. It's not going to spread
exactly, the more input the developers get the less of a problem it will become
@Rinzwind you should just stop running after screensavers from now on ;)
17:47
Linux: if it is not the system that protects you then the community will!
Now is the sound card working :)
a reboot and it's back...
@Alvar Congrats!
:D
* O * @Alvar
17:49
any idea how I can add my key codes for F10 F11 and F12?
they dont come up if I try xev in a terminal...
you know that is the reason I prefer platforms like AskUbuntu over any forum, there is no room for discussions thus no emotions
hence me not really using the Ubuntu forums
UF is good AU is better!
3
i used to use the +1 forum, but i cut it down to just a few random posts
AU >> UF
3
@OctavianDamiean you mean a chat?
@htorque we should put both comments in the meta question about UF :D
17:52
@Alaukik no no I mean the official ubuntu forums
now that is really interesting juliank.wordpress.com/2011/05/11/…
omg ... copy/paste frail
is this title ok?
0
A: F10, F11 and F12 has no keycodes how do I find/add them?

george Go to keyboard preferences --> layouts and add a new layout (UK or any other you currently don't have). Remove your current layout and then logout and back in. Go to keyboard preferences --> layouts and add your old layout again, and remove the one you added earlier. Log out and back in. Check ...

@Alvar I'd bug my boss to buy me a new machine >:-D
(I never have once bought myself a computer _O- ) lol
