Hey guys, I run "fdisk -l" to check the name of my USB device. However, I got 2 names, /sdb and /sdb1. Which one is the correct name to unmount , format etc...
sdb1.
/dev/sdb is the physical disk and /dev/sdb1 is the partition.
@NathanOsman, aha, thanks for the quick reply
No problem.
@NathanOsman, ok, So if I run dd it would be: dd if=/X of=/dev/sdb1 ?
What are you trying to do?
00:12
format the USB and create live USB
Hmm... in that case I'm not sure.
I tried it and it turned out that sdb is the correct one for dd
doesn't matter. sdb1 would clear contents of the currently declared first partition of sdb. sdb would clear the entire disk. if it's a new stick the two are effectively identical.
and i put it back on ignore

Q: Why are you only allowed to comment with 50 rep?

fly.flohWhy are you only allowed to comment on other people's posts when you reached 50 reputation? In my opinion comments are a good way to ask people to clarify their questions or add additional information to problems. That's why I see no sense in limiting people's ability to comment questions. Q: LAMP Server setup for personal development

maGzI am setting up a LAMP server in VirtualBox for personal development. This will be an Ubuntu Server 12.04 install, and I will be using Virtual Hosts for Drupal, Yii, and other small PHP apps. interesting topic over on fedora: during install the show the password: bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=958608#c5
"This is working exactly as it is intended. The passwords are only visible while they are focused. As soon as you unfocus a field, the password is hidden. This is a pattern that is becoming more and more widely used, and it makes sense. Hiding the password as you type doesn't actually do anything for security, as anyone watching your monitor could just watch your keyboard instead. There's quite a few papers about this right now.

Showing the password as it is typed solves all the keyboard layout related problems, and in a way that does not require yet another widget which needs layout,
i disagree. i use dvorak layout while typing password. if they are watching my keyboard, they cant see nuts.

@jokerdino you, sir, are a genius
Oli
Oli
Especially if you only use Dvorak for passwords.
yes. I translate my password across keyboard layouts.
or maybe transliterate.

@jokerdino hi there. just want to give you a heads up. there may be some minor design changes on AU in the coming month(s).

Be ready to be sued by Canonical for disgracing the branding details.
Jin
Jin
i received an email from Canonical. ubuntu.com just launched a new design, they'd like ours to match their new design. nothing too major.
mostly in the header area.
Yeah in that case, we have nothing to say.
btw, can you do something about the Ask question button?

Q: Please make the "Ask Question" button on AskUbuntu more prominent

SriranganI'm a user familiar with StackOverflow websites but it took me a while to locate the Ask Question button on AskUbuntu. Reason: Insufficient contrast (as can be seen below). A single grey / translucent back background should fix the problem.

17:03
@jokerdino that has been raised before. I think with the upcoming design changes, I will. The current AU site design was done by a Canonical designer back in 2010.
I may make Ask Question link part of the other top nav items. and give it a more prominent treatment.
With lots of love from clueless new users.
@Jin Do you have a tentative date when all your design changes will land?
Jin
Jin
but considering AU is ranked 3rd highest in the SE network for Questions/Day, I say that current ask link is working :)
Hah, if that button was more prominent, we could be 2nd.
Jin
Jin
@jokerdino I don't have a date. just received the email from them last week. the next step is they'll set up a meeting with me to go over the details.
so I'm waiting on them.
whoa AU is #3 for traffic too! beat Server Fault.
that's impressive
@Jin Oh I see. Hope it isn't too major.
Jin
Jin
17:07
@jokerdino i hope not. we don't do special htmls per site.. so there's only so much we can do on our end. mostly css skinning changes.
@Jin We swap places every so often. :)
@Jin BTW, do you do some freelancing? ;)
Jin
Jin
@jokerdino i used to, but haven't had anytime since I joined SE :)
Are you guys back from the meeting?

yep. it was an amazing week!
now I'm back in Raleigh, NC.
I think I shouldn't keep you away from designing the new just-graduated beta sites.

@jokerdino there are tons of other design works in SE too. Careers, marketing, print design, swag etc.

Good question.

@Seth I have installed Debian Wheezy, yay!

Q: software-center cannot oppnet in ubuntu 12.10

VangjushI have some problem with Ubuntu Software-Center. Once I open it up. It closes automatically without any permittion Can someone help me out please because I dont really get this. When I run it through terminal this is the feedback I get from the that vangjush@vangjush:~$ software-center 2013-0...

Ah meta so still has me with my via computer that died a while back...
Ok, should be updated for alll the accounts, thanks for pointing that out @JasperLoy
@JasperLoy \o/
user19161
@Seth Are you gonna install it?
Not now, but I plan on it some day ;)
user19161
20:36
@Seth I currently have shortlisted 4 distros for the long term support, Debian, CentOS, Scientific Linux and hopefully Ubuntu GNOME will have one.
Why do you want to use LTS?
user19161
Well, I don't wanna install every six months, though time is not the issue. I feel that a real OS should be reinstalled only once in 2 years, and I don't like upgrades.
Hmm.
user19161
Also, I think I don't like mate, cinnamon or unity.
Sure..
user19161
20:40
On ubuntu 13.04 unity gave me a pixellated screen in some parts lol.
You use Gnome then I take it?
user19161
Yes I think I have become gnome fan...
@JasperLoy 13.04 is a mess with graphics :/
user19161
@Seth Bye! You look less Bieber now but more handsome. =)
@JasperLoy TTYL! This picture was taken with a nice camera this time :P
