How did 1.2GB of packages get upgraded overnight?

I just upgraded to Raring three days ago... and now the update manager wants to install nearly 1.2GB of updates.

I have an account that's logged in to a Gnome session, with all its processes still alive. I used switch user to start a session on another account, finished that session, and logged out. I'm not at the GDM greeter screen. When I try to log back into the first session, I get a new session as that user rather than the existing one. Any clue how to get the original session back?
