Read-Olny file system.
Your whole system is a read only?
Or just one file?

questions/287021/how-to-fix-read-only-file-system-error-when-i-run-something-as-sudo-and-try-to
Huh.. You didn't encrypt any of the drives did you?
NO less it was a error during installion of kubuntu.
IF this help you Ubuntu 12.04.2 lts Is read only and I am using Kubuntu 13.04 to just try it for a few days.
Do you know what error you got when installing Kubuntu?
It might be a error.
What does "might" mean? Did you get an error on installation?
00:15
When I was installing it, it took like 20 min or more to parition the hard drive so I quit it redo it thinking it has stop and when i redo it, it took only 5 min if so.
might meaning 50/50
:/
How big is your hard drive?
500 gb
I think or 720gb
Should I just reinstall Ubuntu?
Well.. I don't what the issue is unfortunately. Have you looked over other questions on the site?
Should I?
Well, if you have a backup you could.
00:18
I keep on my sutff on a sd card
I don't know if this is fixable myself..
@Andrew OK, well you should still make a backup. Those things fail eventually.
I don't store thing on the hard drive becuase it is slower then a sd card. and the only thing that I keep on my hard drive is The 3 OS's and app info
Could you help me on a diffence problem.
?
Sure. What's that?
With kubuntu on a app when I right cilck on it the menu show then hide.
As in, the menu disappears on you?
00:24
yep
yes
Hm.
That's a pretty weird porblem.
I think it is a bug
Let me look if there are updates
OK.
I did a day ago.
No updates.
humm,
that is okay.
Well 13.04 was just released.. I'd give it a little while
00:27
yes
and then report a bug if you still have it.
how, it is blue systems now?
I don't understand. What is blue?
The Owners of Kubuntu know.
Blue Systems is a German IT company. It is most prominent as a driving force behind Kubuntu and a major KDE supporter with a number of KDE developers working for Blue Systems. Background Blue Systems was founded by German businessman Clemens Tönnies jr. He is a son of the deceased Bernd Tönnies who founded meat production heavyweight Tönnies Lebensmittel in 1971. Clemens Tönnies jr. inherited 25 % but left the company by transferring his shares to his brother Robert, who now owns 50 % of Tönnies Lebensmittel. The other 50 % are owned by Bernd’s brother Clemens Tönnies...
Blue Systems is a German IT company. It is most prominent as a driving force behind Kubuntu
I see.
00:30
So How to I report it to blue Systems?
Since Canonical Ltd. doesn't work on it any more.
You would report it on Launchpad I think.
jrg
jrg
launchpad.
Okay but Canonical Ltd. owns Launchpad.
jrg
jrg
kubuntu is still an official derivative.
It's still the bug reporting place.
00:33
okay
So I do I report a bug I forgot.
jrg
jrg
i'm going to install kubuntu, just to try it out. I've never really liked KDE, but i keep hearing it's faster than a lot of other things.
don't it buggy

Q: How do I report a bug?

andrewsomethingI found a problem with an application on Ubuntu. How do I best report the issue? What sort of information should I provide?

Thank you
np :)
00:39
There is no project named 'kubuntu' registered in Launchpad
Hm.
aha
Kde? but okay
jrg
jrg
if you file it there, they will migrate it to the right place.

@Andrew What kind of help with it do you need?
descriptive the bug and makeing it make sence.
Well I might be able to help some, but I don't have a Launchpad account.
00:44

Humm is it just gtk apps? because Kate or kterminal has the bug. Or is it just firefox?
I don't know...
Oh, I have to go now.
Wow it is just firefox. LibraOffice don't have that bug.
Humm Why?
IS it a bug in firefox 20.0?

00:55
to what?
From what version?
jrg
jrg
i have a few servers running 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04, and then i have another laptop running 12.04
so from 12.04 on up, i've got machines around running it (both at home and at work.)
I use Ubuntu 12.04
Who still use ubtuntu 10.04.4?
jrg
jrg
we have a server at work with 10.04.4
for desktop, it's no longer supported though.
on the Desktop I meam.
n
humm I was just trying it on the desktop a few mounth ago.
I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 since A2.
Why whould anyone use Windows 7?
jrg
jrg
for VMWare tools.
01:02
It is outdated
jrg
jrg
sometimes you don't have a choice.
Why whould you use Ubuntu 9.10 on the desktop when windows 7 is older?
jrg
jrg
photoshop and VMWare tools are the biggest reasons I can have for potentially running 7.
7 gets updates, 9.10 doesn't.
Windows 7
8
jrg
jrg
8 does too!
heck, XP gets updates for another 8 months.
01:03
I mean is newer so why don't they download it and upgrade it
jrg
jrg
$$$$$$
SO LINUX, WINE
jrg
jrg
doesn't work for everything.
just like i can't run linux in a VM for everything, i can't run all my windows apps in WINE.
okay for who much for a windows box $50 right if so
right?
jrg
jrg
windows 8 license costs about $200.
01:05
What Why whould anyone use that junk for that price and it is buggy too.
jrg
jrg
you're preaching to the choir.
with holes
what is the choir
?
lol I look on wikipedia :)
nice joke :)
@jrg then I don't they buy a hackintosh? A mac disk is only for $30.
DO you know
@jrg Are you still on?
Bye
01:48
mmm ... vox populi .. I like that!

I just got archaeologist for fixing broken links XD
oh, broken links
is that a new queue?
Well, they're testing it right now.
because I dont see it in the review list
Ahhh
It's kind of a hidden feature ;)
01:52
It needs improves, really
yeah

Q: Link validation review queue doesn't always highlight the broken link

SethIn the new link validation review queue (currently hidden I think) doesn't always highlight the link I'm supposed to be checking: https://i.sstatic.net/u1mA4.jpg https://i.sstatic.net/PY3P5.png https://i.sstatic.net/295j8.png (pictures are too long to link embed). I forgot...

@Lucio Yes it does.
Lots of them.
@Seth I didn't know that the link should be focused
So that bug affects me :(
Let me get a screenshot of what it's supposed to look like.
It highlights the broken links like that.
@benisuǝqbackwards Well isn't finding bugs the whole reason it's live at all? I wasn't surprised to find a bug. — Seth 4 hours ago
lol
I know...
01:56
Oh, you reached the 5K
congrats!
Oh.. yeah I did :)
Thanks :D
I was just seeing your fir screenshoot link
and noticed this in the top :)
Ah yes. lol.
I didn't take the time to crop it.
I also get that post to review, though
:S
That very one?
01:58
yup
Hmm. I'd add that as a comment.
you will, or you did?
I'm thinking I'm going to need to rewrite the whole questions.
oh
@Lucio I was thinking you should :P
01:58
ok
@Seth wait, why I'll do that?
Because it's another part of the bug.
But I didn't complete the review
I saw that post to review, and as it is really annoying to open every single link to see if is broken or not, I just left it
Never mind.
Now that I think about it, I might have skipped that one.
So then you would see it.
lol
ROTFL
I just reviewed 2 post, then I gave up at the third one :P
lol.

Q: Are pets allowed on Stack Overflow?

XeoSomebody apparently let their cat loose, and while I'm a sucker for cute cats, I'm not sure the hard roads of SO are the best place for them to be. They'll be toyed with by waving flags around in front of them, and the orange of the arrows is sure to distract them. Maybe a kind soul can find the...

I think that your answer is useless
Why?
because everybody (and mods more) know that delete an account is serious
yes, but the user was asking if that account should be deleted.. I answered that.
Oh, let me see :D
oh, yeah
well, that is right :D
lol :P
02:09
I take the Luis' comment as an answer
:P
@Seth I'm just trying to understand it
It's just a joke :P
nop, I don't understand it
OK..
Meow? A cat...
Oh, the review links is working!
02:15
Yeah.. It works every couple of posts.
And the links wasn't broken :(
Can one of you approve this edit please? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/112639 (@mateo_salta @Lucio)
@Lucio Well, no. They aren't always broken.
@Seth mmm why?
He's adding a command to do what the answerer suggests. The editor is the OP.
done
02:18
Thanks.
Intresting a user making a answer right, for his question
Seth reviewed this 11 mins ago: Reject
WTF?
I misunderstood at that time.
ARGH. MSO is so slow today.
@Seth You answered my WTF?
:P
Yes... I did :(
02:19
I catch you
you did.
@Seth rèàllỳ?
Well, those characters are considered for latin or european people
Yeah.. still, when do you get that on a captcha?
lol
I'm creating a GitHub user

I'm in the hardest part.. Choice an User name
anyone understand the /etc/hosts file?
ive added 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com and it works perfectly
@JoshuaRobison kind of..
but then I added 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/ and that does nothing
so
even after adding 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/ I am still able to access it
02:31
@JoshuaRobison To access where?
various answers here suggest that it is a browser cache problem but that is impossible
because adding 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com to the /etc/hosts file works
I want to block 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/
but not block 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com
Do you want to access to www.apple.com using www.apple.com/itunes/?
or get banned?
@Lucio, no. I want to visit www.apple.com
so if I type www.apple.com in the browser I want to go there
@NathanOsman Most of my work is done with PHP Really?
but when I type www.apple.com/itunes in the browser I want to be redirected to 127.0.0.1
02:34
Ahhh
I see
i was told that if I write 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/ in the /etc/hosts file , that will work
let me play a little bit with it
but it only works for 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com
it will not work for URLs underneath the www.apple.com root
like 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/ or 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/ipod/ etc
I think that I found the problem..
@JoshuaRobison The problem is you.
You have a conceptual problem
02:40
When you put whatever in the file, it works
as you told me
but when you put whatever/whatever in the file...
it only reads the characters before /
so whatever1/whatever2 will open whatever1 and then, open the folder whatever2 that is (should be) inside whatever1
interesting
@Lucio, so I need to comment out the '/' ?
do something like whatever\/whatever
@JoshuaRobison This is 100% right
@JoshuaRobison yep
wow... ill try it
But let me explain it a bit further
If you added www.apple.com in the file,
and then removed this line,
the browser still will open your 127.0.0.1
so, it is a cache thing
BUT
If you add FirstExample/whatever to the file for first time
then you can enter FirstExample in the addres bar but your 127.0.0.1 address will not be opened
So it doesn't read the characters before the first record of /
but it completely forget about that line
@JoshuaRobison My explanation has finished.
thank you
02:50
The funny thing is that, 15 minutes before I didn't know anything of this :)
So, the moral is, try. That is the key ;)
Well, what should I write in the /etc/hosts file then? I'm confused now
ill have to do a bit more google digging
I found out that /etc/hosts only blocks domains it will not block URLs sub directories
so 127.0.0.1 www.apple.com/itunes/ will not work
T_T
suck

lol - now this is an example of such a light answer: askubuntu.com/a/287585/3940 :D
> These errors are normal
They purged GNOME and cant open GUI apps.
"I am guessing this is because I once accidentally did sudo apt-get remove gnome*.
:P
hmm it is falling over a theme I guess.
Yeah I guess so too hence these error are "normal" indeed, but I dunno a remedy (or what to install to make it work again).
Purging with a wildcard is always dangerous... :/
re-install is best :=)
why would one even think about removing gnome* ?
06:50
hey you could also ask: why does a system let you >:-D
all powers to sudo!
none to hugo.
sudo apt-get install -f gnome*
:=)
that's so not a solution. i suspect the two are not near round trip identical
I know >:-D
or purge 1st :P
we should have something like sudo undo history
Are you sure? Y/N/P:
P is perhaps
06:57
then you'ld get "i deleted my apt.history to free up 2k, but i thoroughly hosed my install. what do i do?"
new app...cli roulette. runs a random command from /bin with root permission with random but app-targeted arguments. it could be fun right?
@CallmeV that would surprisingly not even be a dupe :D
it doesn't surprise me that it's not a dupe
@CallmeV that would be fun yes indeed :D
@Takkat the answer to this is go back in time with a delorean and install brtfs and take a snapshot.
has an over-riding desire to make a hulu clone on django with no flash, some filler content but no real traffic or content, and see what happens...but nothing would happen.

@Seth if it's about the edit, I've just changed that again for the 12.04 version but thank you for updating it.
08:15
isnt the 100K Q a dupe of askubuntu.com/questions/38772/… ?
yeah, it is - but do we really really want to close our 100k question? I feel bad about it.

hello guys
i need a tip if you guys not busy
my answer to this question is getting tooo long askubuntu.com/questions/285434/… , so what should i do if i find new thing and update my answer, should i update the same answer as i did or write a new answer
@XxxXxx you only need to create a new answer if its genuinely a new approach to answer the question. I've seen longer answers BTW
