how can I see the preferences page or the administer page? ( normal settings )
@StefanoPalazzo Mind if I ask a question about packaging?
@Alvar You mean the "Create new user"/"Change password" screen?
@JamesGifford hi
@JamesGifford no the normal preferences page that I used to find in the upper pannel
@JamesGifford Not at all
@Alvar No idea then.
21:06
@Alvar on your profle page, theres a link that says "edit"
@StefanoPalazzo what? I'm talking about natty?!?!
heh, sorry :D
in natty can I see a main settings page like in the old 10.10?
@StefanoPalazzo OK. So .desktop's go in /usr/share/applications. I've got a deb that's got a bunch of .desktop's, and it's hierarchy looks like this
Can i install UNR in 11.04? http://bit.ly/jhRdrk #1104
21:10
@JamesGifford did I mention I don't know anything about packaging?
(:
Go ahead, but in the end you might want to ask on the main site
@JamesGifford or ask on #ubuntu-motu in IRC
@AskUbuntuTwitter :D
but why are you shipping all those .desktop files, shouldn't most of those be shipped by the other apps themselves?
21:12
@StefanoPalazzo haha ok. I thought you knew about packaging.
@JamesGifford I only know the absolute basics, just what I have to know
@JeremyBicha They're custom .desktops with a bunch of Unity quicklists. This is just a temporary thing until the projects add them themselves.
Ah gotcha. Here's the root of the issue: When it's installed, we get this:

`dpkg: error processing ./code/quicklists/unity-quicklist-examples-builds/unity-quicklist-examples_0.2-1.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/applications/chromium-browser.desktop', which is also in package chromium-browser 13.0.749.0~svn20110427r83117-0ubuntu1~ucd1`
oh, ok, I'm not an advanced packager, but I think the correct answer is to patch each of those apps and ship the modified ~ppa versions in your PPA
yup
haha. Well then. Time to go learn everything. ;)
dpkg doesn't like for files to be owned by multiple packages
21:14
didn't know that.
it's an easy change, just modify the .desktop
you don't have to do fancy packaging, and push to your PPA
@Alvar click on the session control button (shutdown icon, top right corner) and select system settings
Sweet. I'll try that. Thanks @JeremyBicha!
@OctavianDamiean thanks! :D:D:D:D
@TheX i own that bag
21:19
@lazyPower so do I :)
@lazyPower awesome I wish I owned that bag...
its awesome
OMG WHAT IS THAT?!?!?
the bag in question
I mean behind the bag:P
21:23
a monster O.o
just joking, was that you?
yessir
@TheX human being holding a bag
@lazyPower cool
@JamesGifford you can also try to get your .desktop changes into the Ubuntu packaging, I believe it's too late for 11.04 but Oneiric will be open soon
21:26
@JeremyBicha Already looked. And I'd try for Oneiric, but I won't be available (Read: I've got a real job) until after the UI freeze would most likely be in effect. :L
@JamesGifford you have a real job? since when?
not enough time to submit a bug and the small patch it needs?
@JamesGifford mh, not sure if you can do that - maybe ask @ajmitch when he's around
@lazyPower lol. :P Since last week when I got my contract for the summer.
What do you do?
21:28
@JeremyBicha I'm probably going to try.
@JamesGifford contract for?? mowing my lawn?
@lazyPower thats mean :p
hahahaha
I couldnt resist, its such an open ended answer...
I'm an opportunist, when it presents itself i take it
@lazyPower Working at a scout camp. and yes, i will be mowing lawns. lol.
I use to be a Boy Scout, no shame in that...
21:30
\o/
i was too. i quit when i hit life rank tho
I don't remember what rank I was
i'm still working on life. need to get these last two merit badges done.
@JamesGifford you're going to smell like a) a foot and b) campfire. Awesome combination for the summer :P
it drives the ladies nuts i tell ya
@StefanoPalazzo what am I being asked?
@lazyPower lol. :P
21:31

Ah gotcha. Here's the root of the issue: When it's installed, we get this:

`dpkg: error processing ./code/quicklists/unity-quicklist-examples-builds/unity-quicklist-examples_0.2-1.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/applications/chromium-browser.desktop', which is also in package chromium-browser 13.0.749.0~svn20110427r83117-0ubuntu1~ucd1`
right, the same file can't be owned by two different packages unless you use dpkg diversions to move one out of the way
I must have been a star...
it's a deb with a bunch of .desktop files with quicklists
I remember passing my 1st class rank
@ajmitch tell @JamesGifford :-)
21:32
@ajmitch figures.
Thanks! :)
but I don't remember going any futher then that
@JamesGifford what I said above, and it's far too late to get changes in for natty
@JamesGifford slim chance for getting it in as a stable release update, but it's not an important bugfix, but a new feature, so quite unlikely
dpkg diversions are a little complicated to get right, but it may be your best way to override the packaged .desktop files
Overiding .desktop's doesn't sound like the best idea, since (at least Chomium/Google Chrome) most of those update fairly frequently.
though their .desktop file doesn't get updated that often, I'd guess
still tricky to get right :)
21:38
:(
all design jobs at Canonical are office based, too bad
@OctavianDamiean Yeah... I had a look myself.
(Not for design obviously.)
Looks like my changes to StackApplet for Windows support broke the Linux build :P
@GeorgeEdison revert :D
@OctavianDamiean That's no solution.
I have to find out why it broke.
@GeorgeEdison I know I just wanted to rescue the linux version :)
@OctavianDamiean Don't worry... the Linux version will always be top priority.
21:45
any predictions on what time 11.04 will be released?
@OctavianDamiean this is why I'd rather apply for a development position, however unlikely it'd be to get :)
oh I'm not worried at all, I have confidence in your skills ;)
@trampster when it's ready
@ajmitch well it's not like I'd really expect to get a position either :)

Q: On what time on April 28 is 11.04 released?

AlvarHi, on what specific time is natty realesed on the 28 of april? (I live in CET). ex, When Apple releases their system it's like 9.00 in the moring (in california, USA) which is 19:30 CET.

21:47
@MarcoCeppi flag it, close it with a vengeance!
years of being on irc have made me cry when seeing such questions ;)
@MarcoCeppi what was that one good for I'm asking myself
I think Cyrex has pretty much answered it spot on
yeah it is a fair answer, pretty much "when it's ready"
I might re-word the question to make it generic so we can kill with fire these same questions in 6 months
@MarcoCeppi that'd add value, I agree
21:49
there's always a group of people on IRC that expect it to be out at 00:00 UTC, or 00:00 in their timezone
haha, those most be the people who also still believe the world revolves around them
Why do people care so much - BETA2 and nightly builds are already out. Those who REALLY wanted it have probably already gotten it
in which case, natty is late! it's already about 10AM in NZ!!
sky is falling now
& I still haven't upgraded to maverick on this computer :)
Good thing we live in the past, gives me time to build my shelter
21:52
@MarcoCeppi but the world does revolve around me...
release day is when the updates stop coming as fast, so it's pretty boring for people who have installed a beta, or have been upgrading as they go
I'm just saying, it's a silly mentality
there will be a few early SRUs, sure
I don't know why I edited that
nor do I
21:55
I want to run something that's under constant development. I miss checking for updates every morning and evening and seeing gobs of stuff waiting for me to install. (Weird I know. But it's true. lol)
updates ... good idea
There's been nothing for the past 12 hours or so. :(
@JamesGifford I generally prefer to run something stable, though I used to always run the latest development release, and prior to that, debian unstable
these days I tend to use VMs or chroots for development work
@ajmitch I keep 10.04 LTS in my back pocket for when stuff goes beserk. And I'd totally go with VMs, but I don't have the RAM and CPU.
21:58
@JamesGifford when I upgrade I'll send you my box and those SE stickers.
@TheX Looks interesting.
@JamesGifford 4GB is just enough on this laptop to run VMs when I need it
@lazyPower you have stickers>
@lazyPower You're joking?
work desktop has 8GB so that I can run windows 7 in virtualbox :)
21:59
@TheX thanks to the DC SEMeetup :)
1GB is barely enough to use Unity. ;)
the only computer I have with only 1GB of RAM still runs hardy
@JamesGifford nah, let me see if the shazbox has a need/purpose at work. if not its yours free and clear. you just pay shipping.
@JamesGifford you run a box with 1gb or ram??/
@TheX look at most netbooks. they run light with ram. typically 1 - 2 gb of it.
22:00
@TheX it's common in smaller laptops
@TheX Yup. 1GB. :)
@lazyPower @ajmitch right, but when was the last time you came across a desktop that has 1gb ra,?
ram*
@lazyPower sounds good. I keep meaning to DM you my address for the stickers.
@TheX you made the assumption that @JamesGifford uses a desktop. He's a netbook user.
@lazyPower good point
22:01
@JamesGifford i figured you were all scared by the fact that i asked for a POBox :P
@TheX Two years ago. The desktop that I picked up off the curb.
@lazyPower haha nope. :P
@JamesGifford if you're interested in shazboxes you can make a trip with your pap over here and pick up an older Dell system for shaz testing.
plus the Gateway shazbox
@TheX desktop? I know of a few people that have them, and who run ubuntu
@lazyPower Sounds like a fun idea.
what is a shaz box?
22:03
not everyone has the money to buy new hardware every 3-4 years either :)
@JamesGifford again i'll look into it :) If its aavailable 100% its yours bro. I'm going to power it down soon and migrate to a netbook-file-server since they are lower power consumption and I put all of my hosting on linode.
@TheX shazbox = $$@^ box
only, i cleaned it up
@ajmitch before I got my new desktop, my PC was a hand-me-down, about 8 years old I think
Sweet. Let me know. :)
Thats why i got involved in linux :P i had a p133 lying around with no purpos so i slapped redhat 5.2 on it and started breaking stuff
then i heard about this awesome app called apache, its free, and it serves gasp netpages!
so i loaded up some pico goodness, dropped in my blink tags, spent four hours wrestling with getting the source to compile and have been a user ever since. -- god i was a noob back then
I use to spend just 4 hours to get my machine turned on...
now it takes about 25 secs
22:06
@TheX do you recall FVWM 95?
@TheX I had a SICK customization i ran with it. I wonder if i still have the SS floating out there in the net-o-sphere.
@lazyPower no I don't know FVWM95
i got started with linux when I got a HP tower off the curb 4 years ago. Dad had a Fedora 4 CD around, so I installed that. (I didn't know that fedora 4 was outdated, even then)
now they are up to like fedora 15 lol
dang, i feel like i'm old-school now or something...
then i heard that this new thing called "Ubuntu" had really nice hardware support... so i installed that.
22:08
because i remember when redhate (yes, redhate) forked RHEL and FC. I was a slack 7 user for years, there was an ancient distro that didnt survive called Caldera that i thought was pretty slick...
My first Linux Distro was Mandrake (Mandriva) whatever it was called back then...
I remember when I tried arch on that HP... that was fun. (No google chrome though)
I hate my timezone I always forget we are up +12 hours ahead of everyone else.
anymore i just want the stinking thing to work with as little interaction from me as possible. i mean, why spend 90% of your day administering things? slap in the USB Key, install, 40 minutes later you're good to go... Ubuntu /Debian has some some amazing things with the linux UX
anybody ever tried setting up a printer with lprng? That was painful. and CUPS was slightly better with their web-based admin interface...but still. nothing beats the Gnome/Ubuntu printer wizard. select, click hplip, and go. No linuxprinting.org, hunting down the scripts, testing each and every one of them because you forgot to export your bookmarks the last time you reinstalled... :P
yeah ok, this is turning into one of those "back in the day ..." old man type stories. so i'll stfu now
@lazyPower lol.
22:13
@MarcoCeppi does alex still drop by here?
I just noticed on the Natty Image there is this thing called USB-Creater.exe...
yeah, awesome-sauce usb key creator :)
I have never noticed it before, guess it was there in 10.10 too
Ubuntu Live USB creator (usb-creator) is an official tool to create Live USBs of Ubuntu from the Live CD or from an iso image. The tool is by default included in all releases after Ubuntu 8.04, and can be installed on Ubuntu 8.04. A KDE frontend was released for Ubuntu 8.10, and is currently included by default in Kubuntu installations. To run the current version on Ubuntu or other distributions, enter either usb-creator-gtk or usb-creator-kde at the command line. Features *Install bootloader to USB device *Optional persistence (all changes made to the system are saved, unlike a Live CD) ...
word
quote wikipedia then :P
@lazyPower lol
22:20
ok I officially love bazaar more than git
O.O
er, i mean, why?
mercurial all the way
CVS ftw \o/
quark is now working all thanks to @Takkat !!!
:)
@Alvar how did you solve the problem?
22:23
mercurial. ;)
I had to whitelist the program by using dconf-editor
and add strange-quark
@trampster which timezone is that?

Q: How do I access the system tray?

JonSo I'm messing around with Natty a little, and I noticed that all the apps that would normally use the system tray (or "notification area"?) aren't displaying there. Is that a bug, or is that the way it's going to be? I heard something about Ubuntu getting rid of that feature entirely. Is there a...

that one
I used it,
and added strange-quark
yup the one I told you about three hours ago :D
22:29
@OctavianDamiean @takkat told me how to use it and didn't SHOUT at me! ;)
@Alvar no one shouted in here. ;)
@OctavianDamiean you did......
a lot
or I mean alot
THAT IS SHOUTING, and that isn't
WHAT?!?!?!
and that is alot
22:31
@ajmitch New Zealand
@trampster aha, another kiwi
I'm in Dunedin
@ajmitch I'm in christchurch
@OctavianDamiean WhAt?1!+
are you on the fairly quiet ubuntu-nz mailing list?
well goodnight
22:33
no, is there any value in being in it?

@trampster not a lot, usually, but there are sometimes people posting stuff :)

Is there any way to make the size of the window shadows in unity smaller?
0
Q: How do I change the size of the compiz window shadow?

TREllisI want to change the size of the shadow of windows in Unity, the default is a bit too big for me. Launching CCSM and playing with the options under "Window Decoration" does not seem to make a difference and disabling that plugin leaves me with no window decoration at all.

though that seems to be a duplicate of some other question

Q: PSA: 11.04 Release Day

Jorge CastroBasically for all intents and purposes that matter to us 11.04 is finished. When we launched we only had the beta under our belts and we've developed the site into what it is today. Since launch we've had to compete with 7 years of built up Ubuntu material on the internet. With a new UI we have...

It is upon us soon!
DoR
DoR
@lazyPower Yeah, I haven't been on here in a while :P
@JorgeCastro are we prepared for the onslaught of questions? :)
I have plenty of caffeine
and Shutter is ready
22:45
heh
for when the younglings start cluttering the answers with their half baked answers I can drop the hammer of completeness +1 on them
+1 for D&D reference
I'll try & come up with some useful answers every so often
I shall forever remain vigilantly lazy
I hope that the lens+unity bug gets fixed soonish
also, how useful would it be to be able to search across all bugs in launchpad from the lens?
22:49
Hello Ubuntu General Room...
Hello @Dananjaya
I just updated to 11.04 and my screen resolution is somewhat fouled. My monitor is capable of displaying 1280x1024 and that was the resolution of previous Ubuntu (10.10) Now I can't change the resolution
It stuck at 1024x768
what may be the problem?
for something like that, you may get better help by asking a question on the site, rather than in chat.
I don't pretend to know anything about X anymore :)
@ajmitch Yeah, me neither :P
@Dananjaya What type of video card do you have?
22:55
Besides, we won't have to put up with X much longer.
not to go against the status quo, but i know a little bit about it ;P
It's an Intel on board VGA.
Using a D410PT board. (Intel Atom)
@Dananjaya ok. Integrated Intel gfx chip, was there a restricted module that you loaded in 10.10 to get all of the great functionality before?
^---- I switched to jQuery Mobile.
Any thoughts?
@GeorgeEdison I'd expect that we'll be putting up with X for awhile longer still
22:56
@lazyPower not that anything I know..
@GeorgeEdison dude i'm LOVING jquery these days. writing an entire management panel in it with an AJAX web-service powering the core.
@lazyPower it is rather useful, isn't it?
it manages to cover up a multitudes of sins that IE commits :P
@ajmitch coupled with the JQuery UI, i've been building some solid apps lately. and @MarcoCeppi has been helping me build some awesome-sauce with it too. Nifty trick of cloning DOM elements allows me to template most of my output
@lazyPower What do you think of jQuery UI?
@GeorgeEdison its got its quirks. But for the most part, i'm really liking it. I wish i had an alternative widget set to use though.
22:58
@lazyPower I've been using it a bit, still too much remaining for me to learn though :)
i saw wijmo, which is expensive but attractive looking all the same.
how does it compare with YUI?
@lazyPower: What do you think of jQuery Mobile?
@GeorgeEdison havent used jquery mobile yet
@lazyPower are you and marco coworkers?
23:00
i'm still developing for last years products... the desktop.
@JorgeCastro no, marco is my mentor
he deserves a cake for all the shaz he's helpd me with already
@lazyPower You can see a demo here: stackmobile.com/beta
@GeorgeEdison nice man

Q: It is 28th April 2011 in Europe, so when comes Ubuntu 11.04 Final?

WhatDoesGoogleMeanIn Europe it's the 'Final' Day, so where is the Release? Maybe anybody knows the exact hour???

rage
@lazyPower Do the transitions work alright?
uhh the tags are chrome, opera, kill?
23:02
It's actually still in beta ATM.
@lazyPower seriously, yes
@GeorgeEdison the animations need some tweaking, they arent fluid on chrome
@ajmitch can we cluebat users yet?
@lazyPower Yeah, they're designed to work in mobile browsers though.
They are very fluid in the webOS browser, for example.
@lazyPower we have to leave that to the friendly moderators
@GeorgeEdison right on
23:03
(I tested it in that and the Android browser.)
@GeorgeEdison i'll load it up on my droid later when i'm not 64 lines into a new method on my webservice :P
@ajmitch do they HAVE to be friendly?
@GeorgeEdison but i digress. i like the general feel of the app
@GeorgeEdison has a native feel for a browser-based-app
@lazyPower they did sort of promise to be nice
is flex a nice language to have under your belt?
i'm probably going to have to write a flash applet :|
@lazyPower first thing I thought you meant was flex.sourceforge.net
no, there is an alternative to action script called flex
23:13
@lazyPower Well....
It's not really an alternative. It's actually a full-fledged ActionScript compiler.
I've used it myself on a number of occasions.
oh, well...er.. i dont know that much about it obviously :)
@GeorgeEdison how would you feel about making some ching as a freelance/sub-contractor?
@lazyPower I don't know... it sounds good.
Why?
@GeorgeEdison I'll email you the specs and you can let me know if you're interested.

failed? I thought it only just went into private beta?
23:41
I bought a love sac
@MarcoCeppi that.... just sounds.... wrong...
@ajmitch It was in private beta but didn't survive it - they pulled the plug two days ago
they look like overpriced beanbags...
Basically - but they are super comfy
23:47
@GeorgeEdison you've got mail
@MarcoCeppi we have one of those in our new office
its pimp
@lazyPower yeah, I got the super sac classic tweed
I just sit on my overplump cat
@JorgeCastro thought we worked together marco. You sure you dont want me to get you on the payroll?
Haha, I never say no to money
:D
great policy
Wish I could list you as my mentor man. if you had asp.net on your resume you'd be in there. I'd have you hired as a consultant so fast.
23:49
now this is something worth spending large sums of moneyu on
@lazyPower: Can we talk in the room I created?
@GeorgeEdison sure
@GeorgeEdison send me an invite and i'm there
