Are there plans for Ubuntu to support ARM processors?
@GeorgeEdison ARM has been supported for quite awhile
Canonical are dedicating quite a bit of resources towards this, along with other companies in the linaro project
from what I can tell, ARM images have been available since jaunty

Q: Is ubuntu 11.04 release image ready?

suduraisIs the current daily image release quality enabled ?. Or should I wait till 28th Apr before installing ? If i install today, will there be any difference ?.

Will be out of date tomorrow
@trampster this is the case for too localized
I think
Hi @all if anyone has experience with netbease, with pydev (not sure if it matter) I'm having a problem.
Whenever I run some scipts
the some proces keep running
consuming all the CPU
I have to manually kill many process called java
04:20
@trampster what my answer not good enough for you? :P
@Trufa java is a joke...
I'm sure its a great answer, but it was not my question and it will be out of date tomorrow. It will be of almost no value to the community after today.
@TheX hehe the joke is on my CPU usage
hehe what do you mean by joke?
@trampster @Trufa nothing... was just joshin'
@TheX :)
@Trufa but java is the scorn of programming languages...

Q: What is the linux repository system?

ssj6akshatHow is it better than Windows and Mac system of downloading and installing applications from the Web?

should this be migrated to unix and linux ?
11:02
@Alaukik reworded the title to be more correct, it has not much to do with Ubuntu so imo it would be a migration candidate
11:44
When is natty released? is it 00:00 on the 29? what time is it out?
btw hi @all
it is tomorrow, don't know the exact hour tho
tomorrow, (:O) isn't it due to the 29? ....
Oli
Oli
@Alaukik There's little value in moving something that is both five thousand years old and is answered with votes. It just means the user won't be able to find their question if they go looking for it. I've built on @OctavianDamiean's title edit to make it more Ubuntu centric.
@Oli hmm sounds good, I was afraid to break the context of the answer but apparently the answer was wrote very generic so that it still is correct. :)
@Alvar nope, 28. April :)

Q: Schools and ubuntu

alexy13Why do schools not use ubuntu? I'm assuming it is because not many people use it (hmm...) and people aren't really familiar with it. It is free and really fast, so I'm not sure why... I haven't heard of a school but there probably is a few.

how can this one be reworded?
@OctavianDamiean very carefully :)
@MarcoCeppi lol :D
thanks for the invaluable tip :p
I mean the way it is now it is just argumentative, kind of
Could be made into a "how do I get schools to"
but it's subjective "Why do schools not use Ubuntu" - We don't have a high enough population of Schools on the site to answer for themselves
As the question currently stands it's better suited for a forum discussion
Wishes he could migrate questions to ubuntuforums
4
indeed, I think rewording it to how do I get schools to ... is also pretty hard to answer since you need either someone who did it already or a school to answer it
But the Ubuntu Advantage team could possibly weigh in about support stuff
Maybe
13:14
I've got to stop writing so much code for answers
14:04
@MarcoCeppi awesome, and thanks.... So, I edited the sudoers file with the line you gave me (specifically: myadmin ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:'/opt/my app/my app') using gedit (I know now that I should have used visudo) and now i can't sudo anything.
@DavidMurdoch Do you have spaces in your file name?
I tried holding both shift and escape (on separate restarts) and neither of them give me an sort of menu in which to select recovery mode
Yes. The application just compiles that way
so I left it as it was.
Okay, so myadmin was your guest account or your admin account?
admin account
Okay, you wanted to do that for you guest account - the admin would stay the same (or that was the idea)
You can fix this - but you'll need a live CD or to drop into single mode from Grub
I know you have to "run" around to get to the machine - so do you have a LiveCD available?
14:07
No CD drive. :-)
usb drive is here.
Do you have an Ubuntu USB drive that you can boot into a live-session with?
I was reading about holding down Shift or Esc but neither of them work. :-/
not at the moment, but I can get one.
Okay, did you ever set a password for root on the machine? (By default root account is disabled so you would have had to done this explicitly and not many people do)
don't think so (I din't set up the machine) But if there is a PW I think i know what it is (and if not, i can get it)
Try to switch to a virtual TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and type in root as the user and the suspected password. If you can't get in that way just make a Live-Session USB drive. Once you do that you'll be able to boot into Live-CD mode, mount the file system, and edit the sudoers file to either remove that line or modify it to have the guest username
14:11
brb. :-)
boo, no luck with root. working on getting the live-session usb set up.
k
It's always handy to have one around :)
so, the only issue with myadmin ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:'/opt/my app/my app' is that I put the admin user instead of the guest user?
that would cause the parse error? weird.
No, the parse error is that you have ' marks
You need to escape the spaces with ``
14:15
hello
guest ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:/opt/my\ app/my\ app
Or rename the app to use _ instead of spaces
ah, so my quotes probably messed it up.
highly likely, I've never tested with quotes but I'm going to assume that's it
i'm downloading the xubuntu 10.10 live cd now. gunna take awhile
There's a way to drop into single mode from grub, but I can't recall on the top of my head since I never use it
14:24
on what time of the 28 is natty released?
@Alvar it's typically "When we're ready" don't know if they've setup an exact time yet
so, what do you think think is the best OS for memory/cpu constrained machines (1.6 GHz proc and 1GB RAM)?
@MarcoCeppi lol

it's a bit worrying when it says beta driver on the nvidia graphics...
14:28
@Alvar where does it say that?
Oli
Oli
@Alvar They're no less stable than the "stable" releases in my experience. They're all just as likely to crash out or eat all your memory.
@OctavianDamiean on my start up in 10.10 a nivida logo flashes and it says that in a red text, it didnt do it in 10.04 strangely!
@Oli ehm what? if it is stable then they wont chrash?!
how did we end up with a firefox-4 tag?
@Alvar I guess at that point you can't take a screenshot already eh?
@OctavianDamiean no ;) bu i can take a pic with my iPhone 3g ;) brb
14:31
@JorgeCastro Apr 19th someone asked a question with a bad tag :)
there....
it didn't say beta driver in 10.04 LOL
I have never before seen such a splash screen
it is awesome and I want it!
it's strange and it began like 2 months ago! 10.04
it appears during 1 seccond...
I reckon that one appears after the Ubuntu boot splash?

I hate waiting! :( (I want natty now! (I'm really a child))
$ sudo do-release-upgrade
Checking for a new ubuntu release
No new release found
@Alvar well you can have natty right now already
just upgrade
HoW? !?!
dude please don't tell me you didn't know! :D
isn't it "do-release-upgrade -d"?
well this works
15:38

Q: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)?

dasenI've seen that Unity with compiz is availiable as a ppa for natty, but I'm using Maverick. How do I 'upgrade' my system to Natty so I can try out the new nifty Unity desktop ?

L0L -d means I can upgrade to natty
Upgrade the operating system to the latest release from the command-line. This is the preferred command if the machine has no graphic environment or if the machine is to be upgraded over a remote connection.
manpages are awesome, read them!
"upgrading to natty by typing "do-release-upgrade -d" :D
it's calculating the changes :P
I'm going to upgrade as well
can't wait another day (:
lolz hard :D
couldn't wait another two weeks :D
Oli
Oli
15:44
I think I'll probably reinstall Natty today too. Unity is getting on my nerves and the upgrade broke my panels-based desktop (though it should have worked - works in live - something squiffy in the config)
@Oli, @StefanoPalazzo hey
hi @Jorge
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro Hi Jorge
@JorgeCastro o/
1.7 gigabytes
15:45
hey so the release team wants to do something
and I need your thumbs up or down
right now in the release notes
they do
"this is broken, here's how you fix it"
in a huge list
they want to instead do "here's all the problems and workarounds"
and then they would post a Q+A for each one on au
and then tag it with something
awesome :D
so that they can say "here are all the known workarounds for the release"
myriads of new users = win
15:47
@JorgeCastro where can I find the list?
Oli
Oli
myriads of people posting "me too", too
right
ok so they just told me they would like to do this for P
er, O, not N.
so it gives us time to think
Oli
Oli
Well protecting the threads isn't that much work... If we do get problem threads, it's only a couple of clicks.
@Oli thats good as well because it makes me get closer to my Deputy badge :D
Oli
Oli
15:48
I think the benefits (for us and users) outweigh the downsides.
@Oli maybe like "official-workaround" or something
or "release-notes"
also protecting them right away is not a bad idea, no need to leave em open
I'm thinking, some of the questions will be off topic, too localised or whatever. And I'd hate to have us all apply different rules to them. But, if they're answered quickly, it doesn't really matter if they're closed
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro Oh, just got that... So we've got 6 months before something like this is actually in place?
So I'm pretty sure it'll work
15:50
yeah they just pinged me
and I was like "oh that sounds awesome, gimme 10 minutes to figure it out with the guys"
@StefanoPalazzo why do you think they might potentially be off-topic and/or too localized?
and then they were like "we mean for next time, we've already written the notes for tomorrow and find that it sucks"
so I asked for an example question
and this is one:
Toshiba NB305 hangs for 5 minutes after suspend. Workaround: specify "nohz=off highres=off" as kernel parameters at boot. (508516)
So basically that would be rewritten in jeopardy mode
@OctavianDamiean well just statistically speaking if you have 100 questions, like two or three of them will be closed
just a fact of life :)
has the current list
look at known issues
@StefanoPalazzo hmm I'm not sure if that really applies to this special case, as it is a list of well known issues within Ubuntu but on the other side I know your Maths/statistics skills so I don't argue :D
15:54
Mh.. having them as questions will mean they'll be much more detailed than just one or two technical sentences, they'll be edited, kept up to date, and so on
that sounds just great
I'll talk to them at UDS
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro That's a long list of issues. Seems longer than previous releases at this stage.
some of these won't fly, they're kind of crap
* 10-30% increase in power consumption. (760131)
for example
oh god I just realized that they are sectioned, damn thats quite a few indeed
@Oli looks about the same to me, you can drop the entire btrfs section, etc.
or maybe we're just adding more to the list?
@StefanoPalazzo are you coming to UDS?
15:56
@JorgeCastro I love the idea. We better tag them with [known-issues] or something so that they get a little bit of leeway when it comes to closing, merging and locking; it should work really well
gosh @StefanoPalazzo won ... omapdss DISPC error on Panda platform. I should've shut my mouth :/
@StefanoPalazzo yeah, we'll figure something out
@StefanoPalazzo I'm keen that they don't want to turn it into a fancy bug tracker
@JorgeCastro Don't know yet, I haven't heard back from anyone
@JorgeCastro we could make a post on meta, like a template for known-issues questions; include prominent links to bug reports, and we need to make absolutely sure they are questions, if the guys can manage that, I think it'll make ubuntu better, therefore, thumbs up from me :)
@StefanoPalazzo I'm not shore I'm going to do it now, it will take like 3-4 hours ( 10.10 did upgraded yesterday!)
ok, I'll do that, but post UDS, I want to hear more about what they're trying to accomplish
16:00
can I like listen to music and use chrome while I'm upgrading?
if I can then I will start now.... lol
@JorgeCastro If I come to UDS, I could help talk it through with you and the release team
@Alvar of course you can, just make a live CD (USB) version of Natty and install from there
@OctavianDamiean Why not just upgrade form the terminal?
@Alvar I honestly wouldn't upgrade, but that is just personal preference, not sure how the upgrading thingy works so that might be possible as well
16:04
@OctavianDamiean I upgraded from 10.10 yesterday and it's just as stable as 10.04... which natty wont be...
@OctavianDamiean Upgrade confidently, it's very stable.
@Alvar well it is just that I've experienced issues in the past which made me not upgrade anymore but perform clean installs
aaa whatever lets upgrade!
hey @OctavianDamiean I've got something fun, you might like it
@OctavianDamiean I hate making a clean install since I have to manually update the software and install everything again it takes like 2 weeks until u are where u have been before upgrading!
@Alvar well that depends on how you use your computer, for me it takes only a few hours to be back to my normal state, thanks to the cloud :D
this is the first ever scientific pocket calculator (I hope I can buy one some day)
but for now, this will have to do:
@StefanoPalazzo awesome :)
@OctavianDamiean can u store all of your settings and programs in the "cloud" :P
or on a bakup?
@StefanoPalazzo wa?? Did you? No you didn't!
16:09
beacuse if I could bakup all my settings and other software tell me how NOW! :D
@OctavianDamiean it's not an exact clone, there's a bit more precision and I've changed all they operators from (x+y) to (y+x), but yeah, I had a free afternoon and decided to have some fun, old school (:
@Alvar why would you need to? Newer version often means newer software anyway
@StefanoPalazzo amazing! :D
@OctavianDamiean well I dont want to install java eclipse, flash etc etc.... and I dont want to set up my window themes and power management all over again! :(
@StefanoPalazzo going to team to team at UDS asking how they can use AU at UDS would be totally awesome
@OctavianDamiean this is another one, it's not at all faithful to the original (because the original had a million functions, just not enough time)
16:14
@Alvar put them on /opt and have /opt be a separate partition. Create a shell script which simply copies .desktop files for those programs to /usr/share/applications
@JorgeCastro yeah indeed; I'm also thinking about how we can make AU work as a support platform for smaller software projects
I don't think we're ready for that yet, but it'd be nice if we could just let people create tags for my-pet-project and have them use AU as their primary help resource
@StefanoPalazzo hmm that sounds quite interesting actually
@StefanoPalazzo is that calculator in your PPA? I mean the HP 35.
@OctavianDamiean No, it's just a single file
wants it :D
gimme a sec :)
16:19
@OctavianDamiean I might do that when my upgrade to natty has finished ;)
I'll be back in about half an hour
@OctavianDamiean dinner?
@Alvar if you need help with that, tell me ;)
oh oh more calculator pr0n
16:20
@Alvar kind of
@OctavianDamiean I will ;)
@OctavianDamiean oooooooh......
9 min left on the download :D
hi
@TheX Hi
I'm upgrading to natty, couldn't w8 really...
@Alvar let me know how the upgrade process goes :D
@TheX k
16:24
hopefully you made backups :D
it's downloading files VERY fast...
@TheX I'm now ;)
smart man :D
well most things were already on a bakup at the mac pro, which has a bakup as well :D
just copying some school files which mustn't be destroyed...
the download said it would take 22 min but it has taken only 10! :D
I wish Ubuntu had a time machine alternative...
@TheX that would be awesome :D
I whish there would be a code converter between linux and mac os x! ;)
16:29
Even Windows does, even though it is third-party...
dont swear! Grrr
2mb/s download! :D
this version of ubuntu may eb one of those you wonder how you could live without! ;)
@Alvar I am a windows IT manager I have to swear, it is my job :P
@TheX :D
@TheX you know why their aren't any mac IT support? ;)
16:31
because schools can't afford the hardware?
didn't you have a power mac g3 isn't that like backstabbing your company?
@TheX nooo (emacs! ;))
I had my mac g3 before I worked here...
@TheX beacuse u don't need it they never really brake down...
@TheX oooh....
my next computer must be a mac, with a portion of ubuntu.... :D
besides... windows = paid bills
I've reached the point of no return! :P
16:33
@Alvar here is my initial response to Natty if you care to read about it...
@TheX you mean wirus=more worrying and danger than u need? (thwy will sue u and make u pay for it)....
no i mean people pay me to fix their windows machines...
Besides, I need Windows to watch netflix...
@TheX what are they stupid it's really easy to install linux why would someone pay u for doing it! ;)
@TheX stupid program LOL
I don't know but it pays the bills
wine
16:35
netflix is not a program...
@TheX hehe :D
@TheX what is it?
it is my cable tv replacement
10 dollars vs 50 a month
@TheX instead of downloading?
@TheX a lot really... I don't pay anything! :P
Netflix, Inc., commonly just Netflix, () is an American corporation that offers both on-demand video streaming over the internet, and flat rate online video rental (rental-by-mail) of DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc in the United States and Canada (streaming only). The company was established in 1997 and is headquartered in Los Gatos, California. It started its subscription service in 1999. On February 25, 2007, Netflix announced the billionth DVD delivery. History Netflix was founded in 1997 in Scotts Valley, California by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings, who previously had worked together ...
I could pay nothing too, if I wasn't morally objected to stealing...
@TheX sounds good... I have to download illegally to watch the show from USA the day after they have been shown in USA
they are shown in sweden like a year after USA.. epic fail on that...
I stream a lot form like this site
16:38
lol
a ton of commercials but free tv! :P
or I use HDMT.net
gahhhhhhhhhh what is with all the scantly clad russian girls popping up on my screen?!?!?!?
@TheX money?
money??
everyone need money and giving stuff like that gives the site money :P
yes the popup sucks really but it's free tv in a way... and it's legal! (for me to watch)
16:41
30 years ago today, Apple stole the computer mouse from Xerox
@TheX so?
@TheX who cares?
Just saying...
windows 7 stole all from apple and ubuntu
silly that people pay for it...
Silly that people pay for overpriced apple products... that are marketed as a "cell phone" but thanks to at&t they can't even make a phone call with them...
stupid eyePhones
@TheX and a windows phone that can get wiruses! and an android that only a computer geek can use yes apple are pricey but they give u what u want, and easy to use phone and a lot more......
reading your blog post about natty... it's kind of good really...
16:45
they give me a locked out, closed source, proprietary system that is costly... gee thanks Apple just what I wanted how did you ever know??
@TheX LOL
you can't win, I love apple stuff I don't care about what anybody say I now better apple are good ("there is only one correct way it's the apple way " LOL)
sure...
you can't win... apple isn't best for everybody that's why u can use a linux...
to each his own...
or to each his apple...
LOL
is there a linux without the usual GNOME programs like evolution mail and rythmbox etc...
16:48
I mean we can go back and forth arguing why which system is better then the other... but it really comes down, does it work for you?
sure... they call it KDE, or there is XDE(I think is the name)..
@TheX exactly I want something that I'm used too andis easy to use... ( I love mac os 9 startup)
got to go be back in a bit
@TheX k, me too.....
foood.!
17:01
@TheX @Alvar Kill me as a traitor, but Apple got the mobile platform right IMHO. :)
#ShutsUpNow
my word, everything is broken :D
pro tip: start all of your favourite apps before you start the upgrade
I would take a screen shot, but the "file type 'png' is not supported" (:
5
see what happens when you don't use the force?
Question...
the force doesn't work during the upgrade either, I think it's a dependency problem
Why can't a simple blog get enough votes from a friendly community to show up but an event in a small localized area can?
Secondly, why did a powerful image editing App have to struggle for votes?
Am I from another planet or is that how things are done?
(Ignore my metal saucer it's fake)
rofl:

17:21
is back
had an awesome pizza :D
hello
gg
the update is going ok I think..
it's replacing gnome screensaver whatever that is :P
haha a bus has crahsed outside on my street in a very tight corner epic fail :P
got to go...
@StefanoPalazzo did you write that calculator using Quickly?
@OctavianDamiean no, that's way too much work for such a small app
linking up your python class with a glade UI definition is just three lines of code
        self.builder = gtk.Builder()
        self.builder.add_from_file("test.glade")
        self.builder.connect_signals(self)
like that
is now really diving into Python
17:36
I really should make some GUI applications in Python. Iv'e been meaning to do so for some time
at first I was kinda put off because it was different but now it starts to feel way way more natural than Java
another reason might also be the fact that I start to realize that Java isn't all that awesome :D
there are a few quirks; if you've been using something like VS (last time I checked) it's quite different from how glade works
I wish there was WebOS for desktops. PHPGTK is soooo far behind
once you've set up your glade ui file, create signals and create methods of the same name in your app class, keep the pygtk reference handy and off you go
I actually think gtk + glade is pretty much the best; I have some sort of rapport with it that I couldn't get with java's UI toolkits or Qt
not to mention html + javascript :)
Wait - what framework uses html+js?
17:41
@StefanoPalazzo Java UI toolkits suck
@MarcoCeppi don't kill me if I'm wrong but doesn't Adobe AIR use web technology like HTML+JS?
@OctavianDamiean Kind of - but it's not nearly as easy as you would think it to be - or as comprehensive
IMO WebOS does it much easier
@MarcoCeppi well no one said I think its easy :D
... Android is so stupid sometimes (most of the times)
oh yea I totally forgot, @StefanoPalazzo you can write Android apps in Python, did you know?
