Where are the Unity settings in Ubuntu 11.04? CCSM is not what I am looking for. http://bit.ly/eKhzHx #unity
00:44
hi has anyone installed xampp for linux?
@Trufa yes but it has been a year or so...
I'm having some trouble with it
@TheX any ideas what this might be
ask away, although I don't think I can help you
XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running.
Google is not really throwing good results
00:55
That to me, sounds like you have more then one version of Apache installed/running
I had previously installed php apache and mysql
that might be it
search in synaptic and see if you have multiple instances of apache installed... if not, restart your machine and try again
@TheX hey! solved
turned of apache
and done
lol
gotta love easy fixes
@TheX yes indeed!
Thanks for the help!
01:00
No problem
come back anytime
@TheX :)
01:15
I never really understood why people installed XAMPP when packages are available in the distro
I think it's actually harder to install XAMPP than our LAMP stack
@ajmitch I don't know, just trying it out
Was used to MAMP (and loved it)
@JorgeCastro @ajmitch I think the intial setup is easier...
@TheX the distro one is like one command
oh, and it asks you for a mysql password iirc
@JorgeCastro yeah... I suppose...
01:23
Installing the various pieces is pretty easy in Ubuntu & Debian, using tasksel
& it's nicely set up with split configuration for virtual hosts, etc

Hi, any ideas on where phpmyadmin could be
I'm sure I have installed it now
and it is not on localhost/phpmyadmin
@Trufa Something's wrong then.
If you installed it from the repos. it will be at http://localhost/phpmyadmin
@GeorgeEdison is a computer restart necesary?
that I havent tried so far
@Trufa Have you restarted Apache?
@GeorgeEdison did this command:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
Hmmm... then something's not configured right.
04:23
@GeorgeEdison hmm... what can I check?
apache is working
mysql seems to be working
just did:
<?php
// Connect
$link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'root', 'root')
OR die(mysql_error());

?>
and it seemed to work fine
Try looking in '/etc/apache2/sites-enabled'
when I do sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
There should be a file '000-default'.
@GeorgeEdison i'm seeing it
@Trufa is this with the system's apache, or XAMPP?
04:25
Inside there should be a line 'Alias /phpmyadmin /usr/share/phpmyadmin'.
@ajmitch no, systems apache
Do you see that line?
hmmm.
this?
Alias /doc/ "/usr/share/doc/"
<Directory "/usr/share/doc/">
Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
Allow from 127.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 ::1/128

That's all of the contents?
@GeorgeEdison no!
<VirtualHost *:80>

DocumentRoot /var/www

04:26
@GeorgeEdison from what I know, phpmyadmin or other packages do not touch the virtualhost files
@ajmitch Hmmm... but it seems to have in my case.
I've got a line in there setting an alias for it.
@GeorgeEdison or you've put it there
at least on here, I have a symlink /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf
@ajmitch I don't remember that.
@GeorgeEdison the postinst creates the symlink on lucid
@ajmitch I'm on Maverick if that makes a difference.
04:29
touching virtual host definitions wouldn't be allowed
@ajmitch Hmmm... maybe I did add it and just forgot :P
quite likely :)
/etc/apache2/conf.d is included by apache2.conf, just before virtual host configs, so it should be available
@ajmitch I think I'll give xampp another try
this is turning out to be quite frustrating
you won't have any more luck there
unless xampp includes & sets up phpmyadmin for you
@ajmitch ohh but whn I was trying I could see it
04:32
@Trufa have you reloaded apache2 since installing phpmyadmin?
@ajmitch i did this:
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
& have you looked at the logs to see what the error message is?
@ajmitch no, don't know where to look
or what to look for, sorry!
/var/log/apache2/error.log
@Trufa Try JetHTTP :)
04:34
yawns
greetings
(Just kidding...)
@GeorgeEdison :)
@ajmitch pasted it here
it was quite long
@Trufa there is a symlink /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf & a file /etc/phpmyadmin/apache2.conf ?
not sure what is a symlink
sorry
but those files dont seem to exist
:0:> ls -la /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2009-05-18 11:13 /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf -> ../../phpmyadmin/apache.conf
04:43
ls: cannot access /etc/apache2/conf.d/phpmyadmin.conf: No such file or directory
that's interesting, since they should be created by the package if it's doing an apache install
so for some reason, it didn't pick up that you wanted it installed for apache
sudo dpkg-reconfigure phpmyadmin
ok
Reinstall database for phpmyadmin?
Y/n?
probably no
Now choosing apache2
Was it not selected?
04:47
it gave me this chice
Please choose the web server that should be automatically configured to │
│ run phpMyAdmin. │
│ │
│ Web server to reconfigure automatically: │
│ │
│ [ ] apache2 │
│ [ ] lighttpd
chose apache 2
right, so neither was selected
right
I chose apache2 is this correct?
ok, if it should be working by now
it isnt
at least in
localhost/phpmyadmin
Were those files mentioned before not created?
04:55
@ajmitch nope
Unless you didn't actually select apache2 because of debconf's annoying UI, it should have created that link
@ajmitch got it!!!!
from here
ok, what was different this time? :)
cd /var/www
ln -s /usr/share/phpmyadmin phpmyadmin
ah, the ugly way around it
04:59
@ajmitch is that bad?
ugly mostly because it relies on the DocumentRoot being the default (/var/www)
if it works for you, fine
@ajmitch maybe tomorrow I'll give it another chance
this is only for local developmet obviously
id doesn't matter sooo much I guess
@ajmitch thank you VERY much for all your help
!!!
You've really been very kind!
@GeorgeEdison thanks to you too!
no problem
05:06
@ajmitch see you later, thanks again!!

Q: How do I do right-click the icons on the Unity launcher using keyboard keys ?

suduraisIs there way to do get right click action on unity dash board icon launcher using keyboard shortcut ?. After doing Alt+F1, I could select the application only.

just wondering if that should be left or closed as is mentioned in the Unity Keys question

Q: Unity keyboard/mouse shortcuts

htorqueIn Compiz-based Unity, are there any pre-defined shortcuts, e.g. to open the dash or unhide the launcher?

10:14
@OctavianDamiean well, it was hard when I didn't know what to do ;)
will my graphite window theme work in 10.10 and 11.04?
@Alvar I don't see a reason why not but you'll have to try it out
@OctavianDamiean will all my usual settings be the same?
@Alvar I have not idea what you usual settings are so I can't tell
@OctavianDamiean like desktop picture, power management the lot really...
how long does it take to upgrade to 10.10 in a terminal (64-version) it takes forever! LOL
@Alvar hmm can't tell for sure, I'm never upgrading from a version to the next one
10:18
@OctavianDamiean that's stupid LOL
@Alvar well there is a lot to do for an upgrade
@Alvar is it? Would you mind telling me why?
that doesn't really convince me
lol
calling someone or that what he does stupid without backing that statement up is a bit stupid ;)
@OctavianDamiean I didn't think that argument through really... well whatever....

@Dani3l mind you it might have been there all along as the icon is different to those in the screenshots and blends in now with other lenses :D
@Cas nah you need to restart unity to get freshly installed lenses to appear

sees the words "restart unity", runs like heck
;)
13:22
Hello
Oh hey @TheX.
@JamesGifford hows it going?
@TheX Going pretty good. Excited about Natty?
eh...
@TheX RE: Wifi randomly dropping. Switch to indicator-network
That fixed my issues.
however, your milage may vary
@JamesGifford I will give that a go if my problems are not solved...
@TheX :) it also looks better (IMHO)
Yeah the screenshots do look click
slick*

I'm a bit disappointed with the Unity multi-monitor bugs which add to the X bugs that were also present in Maverick :|
13:36
@Cas I haven
good grief... can't type today
I have not tried Natty with a multi monitor setup yet
I tried Natty with a projector... it was just a mirroring setup though.
Cas

@TheX it 'works' but its not very slick. My issues stem from the different monitor resolutions.
you will get a duplicate panel on the secondary monitor
@Cas I think that's how it's supposed to work.
Cas

@JamesGifford i can kinda see that but its doesnt look good plus all the indicators are there
the launcher also plays havok with dragging windows around
@Cas Yeah. I see what you mean.
13:42
looks odd

Q: Will everything (downloaded fonts, files, apps etc) remains the same when I upgrade from Maverick to Natty?

SuffiI'm planning to upgrade from Maverick to Natty, and to try out Unity. But I don't want to lose any settings, customizations and downloads in Maverick. I just wanna know, would upgrading alter anything that I said earlier? I don't want to start over with a clean, fresh Natty, and I hope I can keep...

Thats it, I am done...
anyone remember the dupe to this?
we get this question alot

@Cas Yeah.
I see what you mean.
13:58
hah
the GNU thread on meta makes me chuckle
@JorgeCastro It annoys me to be honest
this is why it's called "ubuntu" and not "ubuntu linux"
@MarcoCeppi hey long time no see...
@TheX Oh, I'm always here, I just don't have much to say anymore :)
14:02
@MarcoCeppi cat got your tongue?
@JorgeCastro Have you seen his other slingshots? This man is crazy
@JorgeCastro lol!
how he insists ...
Interesting, Ubuntu Live thing
14:18
Ubuntu is Alive?
Oh yeah that...
try it before you buy it I guess
14:53
this is awesome
@MarcoCeppi why does it annoy you ?
@Alaukik It's more of a nitpicking move than anything else
The GNU/Linux naming controversy is a dispute among members of the free and open source software community over how to refer to the computer operating system commonly called Linux. GNU/Linux is a term promoted by the Free Software Foundation (FSF), its founder Richard Stallman, and its supporters, for operating systems that include GNU software and the Linux kernel. History Plans for the GNU operating system were made in 1983 by Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation. In September of that year, Stallman published a manifesto in Dr. Dobb's Journal detailing his new pr...
There isn't a solid naming convention - so enforcing a rule either way is impractical
This is similar to the dispute that happened within local SE-sphere
Unix & Linux vs Ubuntu Stack Exchange sites
I don't really get the point
we call the kernel "linux"
and the OS is "ubuntu"
In the end if the author of a post uses "GNU/Linux" to describe something, then that's fine. If they use the term "Linux" to describe the same thing that's fine to. It really isn't something we should enforce either way.
i am not saying to enforce anything .
i am just saying that we should be able to replace linux with GNU/Linux
@Alaukik But why? I fail to see the argument for - since most of the time the term "Linux" is being used to describe the kernel - which isn't "GNU/Linux"
Like @JorgeCastro said, Ubuntu is the "GNU/Linux" OS - so it would be like saying "Everywhere there is Ubuntu, replace with Ubuntu GNU/Linux"
15:03
@MarcoCeppi i am not saying we replace those instances but instances like "linux app for doing xyz"
@Alaukik that question is off-topic, it should say Ubuntu app for doing xyz or go to Unix & Linux if they're looking for a non-Ubuntu "Generic" solution
@MarcoCeppi but none of them are closed
@Alaukik They need to be flagged then, and either fixed to represent a proper scope - or migrated to the appropriate site

Q: Paint.NET altenative on Linux

jumpnettDoes anyone know of a simple Image Editor, with functionality comparable to Paint.NET, for Linux? I've always found GIMP to be overkill and too complicated for what I want to do.

so should this be closed or renamed to ubuntu or GNU/Linux ?
Ubuntu
15:07
??
The API caches things - so the new title isn't showing up in chat
@MarcoCeppi why don't you post this answer(rename to ubuntu if it is talking in the os context rather than the kernel context) on the meta question .
I am, working on writing it now
@Alaukik it should just be "paint.net alternative" as ubuntu or linux can be assumed considering it on askubuntu.com
@TheX Actually, having Ubuntu in the title isn't all too bad as I found out. When it makes sense it's okay - it helps SEO apparently
That title is now apparently more "SEO-able" since it'll match search queries better
15:10
@MarcoCeppi just saying it isn't necessary.. as it can be implied that the user is looking for alternatives to paint.net that work for Linux/Ubuntu.
Guake terminal showing up wrong in Unity http://bit.ly/fM0uuR #1104
Alrghasfsdkfjlkdshlfkdsjf. This is STUPID. AIM has a password length LIMIT!!! Yet another reason to ditch them.
@JamesGifford how long of a password do you need?
@TheX My "industry standard" is 20.
is insanely paranoid about password length
15:25
(and no, my passwords aren't "12345678901234567890" ;) )
Mine used to be leetified song lyrics
1q2w3e4r5t6y7u8i9o0p'è
n3v3rg0n4g!v3y0uup was one of them
22 characters! Letters! Numbers! Symbols! Accents!
BEST PASSWORD EVER!!!!!!!!!
@failbadp said password won't work for hotmail or AIM. :P
15:28
@JamesGifford A good reason not to use those!
@failbadp Indeed!
</end-password-rant>
my standard is 10, five if I am filling a bit lazy
which is more often then not
I mostly use openID-type thingies.
I would almost use Apple's MobileMe thingy if it was 1. Free and 2. No password limits.
3. Not made by apple :)
Eh. I'd use it anyway. It's better than AOL/AIM that's for sure. :)
15:34
4. didn't track your where abouts 100% of the time
oh wait, that was the iPhone, not moble me...
That file never leaves your computers. It's accessed by ONE program. No third-party apps can view it. That, and they've known about it since iOS4 came out - at least, the forensics folks did. Also, Android actually sends it to Google (Disclosure: I write for Oaggle)
^^
Disclosure for apple was 4 releases to late...
IMHO
I really don't care what my phone tracks of me. "Looks like you've made 32 phone calls, visit you office a lot, and are pretty awesome"
@MarcoCeppi you might care if you are a cereal killer.... or something
@THeX cereal killer?
15:40
People check into places on Foursquare, Gowalla and geotag their tweets. Nothing special about their phone just storing a DB of it. :P
@TheX But alas, I am not. So I don't care. I also don't use a droid or iOS phone
@Alaukik yeah someone with a deep dislike for Cheerios, or Lucky Charms
starts digging in the WebOS VM for a geo-location file :P
Guess this is a "No".
No they just store it remotely...
just like Google :P
15:45
I still don't get where any company thinks they can track their customers, whether remotely, or locally, outside the use of a warrant, or in the case of an emergancy
I don't either. However, while the internet it getting global (SE is a perfect example), it's also getting more location-specific (Foursquare, Gowalla, Meetup etc)
So, you kinda need to to some geo-location stuff.
I realize that... but that is with the users permission and knowledge and they have have the ability to opt out, or not use such services
@MarcoCeppi @Alaukik replacing that in the title doesn't make sense either
it should be "What alternatives are there to paint.net"
having ubuntu in the title is just redundant
@JorgeCastro I brought up the same concern on How Things Work stackexchange - they say it provides good google-ability (though i still think this is just false information)
Ideally it should either be removed or kept where it makes sense
Out of curiosity - in Unity, what does it mean when the Ubuntu logo menu button thingadongdong left top corner turns blue?
15:49
well the "ubuntu" is in the domain and the title
@MarcoCeppi It's not just false info. It's real. but since "ubuntu" is already all over the site, and extra mention or two won't matter much.
@failbadp it means an app on the launcher needs your attention
@JorgeCastro Thanks
Has it been asked on the site yet?
On the meta for How Things Work I brought up saying "How does ..." in front of every topic is stupid and redundant. Robert said no, it helps SEO - so I'm just saying what he said.
@JorgeCastro I updated my meta answer
@failbadp the Ubuntu logo is called COF (Circle Of Friends) ;)
15:52
I've updated a few of the changes to reflect the lack of Ubuntu in the title: askubuntu.com/posts/16888/revisions
@JorgeCastro searching for "paint.net alternative for ubuntu"(without quotes) in duckduckgo does not have askubuntu in the results whereas it should be in a box as it uses SE for zero clickinfo
I think in the case of the Paint.NET application it's okay - Because just Paint.NET alternatives seems too short to be worth it's weight in gold
I just think that having "... on ubuntu" and "... on 10.10" makes the entire site hard to read
we know you mean ubuntu, the site is called askubuntu
True, and for the most part it's redundant I just think there are a few corner cases
wait what? the tags won't be evaluated when searching on Google for example?
didn't the perform fulltext indexing?
15:55
@OctavianDamiean The title of the page, and reported meta descriptors, have a higher weight than the fulltext index. It will likely index the full page still, just whatever their search algorithm is will put a higher match constraint in title and meta
So... I need to go back and REDO all those tag wikis?! ;)
actually thinking about what I just said I realized that I'm stupid ... we don't have ubuntu tags anyway
@MarcoCeppi for example people always put "natty" in the titles too, I edit those out since we have version numbers
gosh it really makes sense!
we really don't have Ubuntu anywhere as we considered it redundant
hmm
For instance, I think this question should keep the Ubuntu at the end

Q: List of free MMOs for Ubuntu

VJoIs there a list of free MMORPG games for Linux (specifically ubuntu) somewhere? I know of Regnum Online. Any others?

Because it's a full phrase, and will likely get indexed better than "List of free MMOs"
15:59
indeed
