@DanHulme: I consider RMS a bit of the extreme fringe of FOSS, despite (maybe because) of the influence he's had through and with gnu. Amusingly his issues seem to be with non free codecs, other than what I'd have expected to be his problem
I really like a system where people don't intentionally make me jump through hoops to get something working for ideological reasons
@JourneymanGeek Do you have a question on SU on how to SSH into an Ubuntu box from Windows? I'd like to play around with SSH but only have one Unix computer.
I could probably figure it out myself.. but a Q/A would be nice :)
I have a windows 7 machine and a linux machine. I want to SSH from windows to linux. How would I set this up if both are connected to my router at home? Would there be any changes necessary if I left my linux machine at home but took my windows machine with me to starbucks?

Since it has been suggested on the comments to this question on reading BTRFS on Windows that if we wanted to discuss if its on topic, I will.
In many cases, the decision on what site's the best depends on who can best answer it. While its a linux file system created on an ubuntu system, your fi...
I often have to deal with documents using multiple images -- as e.g. Howtos, short documentations, or even books with many examples. Always when I start a new document with LibreOffice Writer and insert the first pictures, they are embedded by default. I need them to be linked by default -- but c...

@JourneymanGeek HIs (and GNU's) policy of not accepting patches without copyright assignment is pretty broken, even if you understand the reason for it.
Do we have a question about how to set up a localhost Development Server (on Ubuntu Desktop) - not open to outside world? (answered with step-by-step instructions for dummies)
You should never asssume localhost and always assume it will be set open to the world and set it up accordingly. Nothing worse than fixing permissions afterwards..
@Rinzwind I don't have much knowledge about stuff... Would like to setup one for playing with wordpress, setting up forums, etc.... (I don't want anyone else to be able to access it)
So, if I use the VH method to setup the environment.... will I be able to create localhost/site1 and localhost/site2 ... or will I be restricted to just 1 site localhost/site1?
@fossfreedom, I was reading LXDE/XFCE Hybrid with much interest. I may want to replace PCManFM with Thunar. Is the information there current for 12.10 and the versions of PCManFM and Thunar presently in the standard repos?
I'm trying to mount a folder on the host to an LXC container.
The host has a folder /mnt/ssd/solr_data created (this is currently on the root filesystem, but later I'll mount an SSD drive there, so I'm prepping for that).
I want that folder to mount as /data in the container.
So in the contain...
The command should be
apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -a)
$(uname -a) will automatically be changed to the kernel release name.
You can remove the directory itself with
cd /usr/src && sudo rm -rf "linux-headers-uname -r"
It is best to use somewhere after typing linux-hea...
@Rinzwind I don't think they ran the wrong command. If you look at the actual text they wrote in the question, they have used backticks only around uname -r. They probably wrote these same backticks in the command they ran. Backticks around something have the same effect as enclosing it in $().
So they should not remove the directory; as far as I can tell, the directory they made is correctly named.
Also, you have uname -a rather than uname -r in a command in your answer. uname -a gives too much information to include in backticks or $() to generate a package name.
After a fresh install of 12.10 on a system with 6 users. Every user that logs in gets the message

I need a way to automaticallay turn the touchpad off when an external pointing device is in use. I tried setting "turn off touchpad while typing" in System Settings, but that didn't work.
A slight caveat is that I use both bluetooth and USB pointing devices, so perferably a solution would be ...
@jrg So, maybe you have a clue with my problem (found the solution, but want to know the reason)
I just ran the 'jekyll' command, and my site was re/generated just fine. But in the process, I command-line output these errors: pastebin.com/MuwCDeHj (see lines 5-8) And then, I tried setting server: false in my _config.yml and that fixed it.
interesting things though. that day you decide to move in to a camper-trailer and find a campground so you can work part-time at mindless stuff so you can build interesting things \o/ (we'll see if it was a good idea or not in a year or so)
Probably a dumb question, sorry :( Are people here expected to say hello when arriving and goodbye when leaving? Or should we just come and go, and only talk when there's something to add to the conversation?
I was wondering if there was an app for Android with which I could access Ask Ubuntu? And if there isn't, and I wanted to write one, is there an API I could use? Where can I find more information on this?
Cheers,

A little while ago I asked a question (Should I flag comments such as “I agree”, “+1 for x”, or “I changed x in my post”?) about if certain kinds of comments were to be flagged as useless, and got told that I should just flag it if it did not contribute to the question/answer. This is reinforced...
@mateo_salta: Sadly, I don't think we'll see signed .app files for Mac OS X since they are charging a (ridiculous) $99 fee for a developer certificate.
playing with syncing app settings across multiple platforms through ubuntu-one at the moment. it's a little upsetting that we have developer documentation but very few example apps
This section mention that the PATH variable should be read/modified from /etc/enviroment. Am I understanding it wrong? Because I searched in thousands of post here and there is no one how mentioned this.
