@FEichinger I disagree. We are part of Stack Exchange. Besides, you can use your Launchpad account.

good morning
Now, I need one more (and last privilege) :)
08:24
yawn. no one is here ._.
Yeah, grues got em all, the poor fellas
I'm here
Oh wow. Hello.
o/ @Mochan
@JourneymanGeek @Anwar Wanna help me mess with gnome-screensaver? \o/
@Anwar \o
08:32
@Mochan I'm not on gnome now... using KDE for a while
@Anwar I see. I like KDE. It's cool :D
what is the problem?
@Anwar I wanted to change the fact that the desktop wallpaper is the same as the lockscreen wallpaper.
@Mochan agreed... the only bad thing is it is not mainstream..so lacking of supports sometime
@Mochan oh, wait. there was a question regarding this . you need to change the lightdm option. wait a sec
@Anwar I suppose so. I like it and Cinnamon the best, I think. IDK if you can get Cinnamon on Ubuntu though?
@Anwar I'm running 12.10 and Gnome 3.6.
@Anwar Oh, yeah. I have actually done that, but that one is the Unity Greeter - not the lockscreen.
^That thing
hmm... wait..
@Anwar It's a little b*tch, I'll say that now.
@Mochan I'll try that one. but i think, you can't change it now.
@Anwar Wah. That sucks. Can't I explore gnome-screensaver and see if I can fish up something lucky? Fish up? wut.
08:43
:)
Well nvm. I'm hungry. bbs.
09:03
Back (if anyone's still active)
i was alive
@Anwar And... you're dead now? o_O
sorta :/
Hahaha XD
I am still having no luck with the lock screen, so it seems. Sigh.
Hey, @Anwar, what's the difference (besides the obvious appearance changes) between having LightDM and any other DM?
Esp. on Ubuntu. I could... ugh. IDK.
I'll try to look at that prob.
@Anwar :P
need to go to home. bye
o/
To anyone who is still here: WTF? ^
09:34
@Mochan Here in the general room?
@EliahKagan Yeh :3
I have never seen that dialog before .-.
@Mochan I'm not sure how launchers are marked as trusted. But maybe it just means that the launcher doesn't have the executable bit set? You might check its permissions in Nautilus. (Assuming you do trust it and do want it to run, that is.)
@EliahKagan Hahaha I just opened it with gedit (which was all I wanted to do) so it's fine :) I was just startled.
09:52
O.o - they are kidding!
@Takkat lolol
I may have not disabled floppies from the VM settings...
@Takkat Hahaha probably!!
Is it reasonable to say I hate Gnome 3?
<-- wonders how many computers still have a floppy drive
GNOME 3 - why do you hate it?
@Takkat Because it won't let me change the lock screen background and it doesn't have a .ui file in /usr/share/gnome-screensaver!
Waaaaaaah gnome 2 did~~!
09:58
GNOME people dont want users to tweak around.
Well why else would I have Ubuntu. wtf.
Only way to avoid support Q like: "I configured something now all is gone"
Listen up, GNOME. I want to mess with it. I want to mess with it now.
@Takkat nuuuu
@Takkat that would be my own fault though it's not like im going to go crying to them. oh no i am way too cool for that. meep.
Its cool, isn't it?
10:00
even my bad eyes can see this.
@Takkat le gasp it's a miracle! JK. :P
rolls around I can't do ittt. Why GNOME, why?!
Now I wonder why I am able to install 13.04 in VBox on my very old machine, but not on my desktop.
@Takkat ._.'' oh ubuntu
The older the hardware the better ;)
@Takkat The hardware. I see.
Damn it! I tried to write 'hadrware' but I failed and spelled it correctly cries
10:05
better let me type it then.
<- always fails with longer words like gardware
Oh lol was that on purpose?
hurr durr
No I was curious what typo will come.
Nyahaha you're too funny~
I can't forget Mr. ~.
> About 140,000 results (0.28 seconds)
for Gardware
._.
Did 140,000 people fail or is gardware a real thing?
@Takkat, is there any way I can stick my nose in GNOME3? Isn't it open-source?
10:08
never put my hands on it (I'd propably hate it)
Nope. Still another typo there. *Propably*
Need new glasses.
Bropably
Hahahah XD
I just need to change 3 files. It's not much of an ask :(
I bet you can do that somewhere
Not like I'm going to inject some idiot-infested atrocity I download or anything.
@Takkat But where?
In Gnome2 it's usr/share now it's imgoingto/hideitfromyou/because/ihateyou
10:11

My computers dream of The Void.
All shiny black.
My computer dreams of me stopping screwing it up.
Only that the monitor then powers off. Monitor needs longer to boot than Ubuntu on my desktop.
@Takkat Oh my God, really!? Poor guy. pats head
They don't say anything on monitor boot time in the data sheets.
But it becomes more and more significant.
@Takkat The monitor shouldn't need to boot. Wah. Quick. Snappy. Startup. Please.
10:17
yeah - now it feels like an old CRT when warming up.
lol
monitors take time to boot
this is a fact of life ;p
They take my time!
thats why you usually put it on standby tho
Welp I don't have a monitor, so to speak.
It needs booting from standby... :(

@Takkat mine does. it cries. i laugh.
that said, my desktop boots really fast on either OS on it
@JourneymanGeek nothing for me (did I mention my glasses?)
even tho kubuntu runs on a crappy 40 gb laptop drive
10:20
@JourneymanGeek Waaaaah so cute! I have 2 with 15.6in and one with 11in. and I think I have an old desktop somewhere. The monitor probably isn't widescreen though haha
>_>
your monitor is your glasses?
@Mochan: my monitor is seriously cheap tho
My eyesight is too weak for 10" display.
135 dollars, only does DVI and VGA
ahh
@JourneymanGeek 40GB isn't necessarily bad.
@Takkat: I use the 12 incher for school
10:21
@JourneymanGeek expensive
my desktop is the primary system
@JourneymanGeek \o/
@Mochan: pretty cheap for a first hand monitor actually
lowest you can go is about 120 I think, and those are smaller
@JourneymanGeek meeeeeeeeeeeeh i don't know~
(besides, I spent more than that on my keyboard and almost as much as that on my mouse, and...)

I tend to have a lot of generic brands selling for happy prices.

@DanHulme that's the thing. I plugged it in my Das Keyboard.
@JourneymanGeek I know... just like Apple... :3
@DanHulme: so small, it has a do not inhale sign written in it in really small script
this mouse is awesome, other than costing far too much to be able to recommend it to people ;p
@JourneymanGeek yours? yeah. how much?
@Mochan: the roccat? something like 80usd.
10:41
@JourneymanGeek hm. ill buy myself a better car first.
@Mochan with $80? you might get some furry dice
@DanHulme $80*1000
$800,000 be mine.

@DanHulme: what kinda makes it worse is my first mouse was DOA, and I got it swapped...

BBL (food intake)
@vasa1 You mean their 7 identical answers?
Yes! I voted to delete most of them in the review queue. It does seem to be just one poster.
11:20
The problems it's posted on at least share some commonalities. It's possible the answer applies to more than one of them. It's unlikely it applies to all or (it seems to me) even most. Anyway, it should of course be customized for each one. Maybe some of those questions are duplicates of others, too.
@vasa1 It's definitely just one poster.
I think you're being too kind and giving too much benefit of the doubt!
Btw there's some question for closure in Regulators.
@vasa1 Well remember, you can always downvote... (Please don't downvote all of them, which would be serial downvoting. But you could probably downvote up to 2 without anyone--including the system--objecting.) If you believe they should be downvoted, that is. I'm not saying you necessarily should choose to downvote them. I downvoted the two most recent ones.
Can we downvote in the review queue? I didn't check. I just went for "recommend deletion".
@vasa1 No, you cannot vote in the low quality review queue. You can vote on posts in the late answers and first posts review queues.
(It's not specific to downvoting. For every review queue, either voting--upvoting and downvoting--is enabled, or neither is.)
But you can follow the link link from any review queue to see a post in its "natural habitat," where you can vote, flag, etc.
Yes, that's what I do sometimes to get the "context".
11:32
@Seth There is nothing wrong with downvoting spam. Flagging is the most important thing--everyone should always do that. But downvoting helps too, because it often makes it disappear from the main page faster. That's a good thing, even in the (probably rare) cases where it makes the spam exist longer because fewer people see it. It's inherently good for spam to be off the main page, and showing spam to the entire community should never be a goal.
When we post links to spam posts to get them flagged, we are specifically recruiting people who know how to flag and are actually going to do so. Just because it's usually appropriate to post links to spam here does not mean that we should work against the system's design to keep spam on the main page.
To put it another way: spammers want their spam displayed on the site. That's why they post it.

2 hours later…
13:52
@EliahKagan There is another side: once the spam is off the main page it may not be spotted for flagging. Only 4 downvotes make it disappear but 6 flags are needed for it to get auto-deleted.
@Takkat 3 spam flags banish it from the main page. (And then 3 more are still needed to delete it, as you say.) It is inherently good, and by design, that spam will disappear from the main page before it is ultimately deleted.
(Furthermore, everything I said above explicitly addresses and rebuts the idea that we should deliberately keep spam on the main page.)
4 downvotes and 3 spam flags kicks it out of the main page
@jokerdino Right. Either will do it (you don't need both). Actually, the score has to be -4 for a question to be kicked off by downvotes, and it can come back if it's undownvoted or upvoted. Whereas, even if a 3x spam-flagged post gets upvoted, it still doesn't get back to the main page. (Until the spam flags expire, that is, as can happen if a post is wrongly spam flagged, though I guess and hope that it's rare or nonexistent for a post to get 3 wrong spam flags.)
Related (and my reference for the claim about how spam flags are designed to kick spam off the main page before it is deleted):

A: How does the spam flag work?

KipWhat is Spam? Spam is Unsolicited Commercial Advertisement. You've all seen it. Spam doesn't mean "I don't like the answer" or "this answer is noise." What is the effect of the Spam flag? This type of flag receives an extremely high priority in the moderation queue. It should be used only wh...

got it. yep
Yeah, but then there still is no point in downvoting - we should teach people to flag, flag, flag...
14:04
but a spam flag auto downvotes.
The problem is spam with more than 6 downvotes but still alive.
@Takkat people only have so many flags
@Takkat Spam that is alive is a problem. It doesn't become more of a problem when its score is lower. Of course, if people are downvoting instead of flagging, that's very bad and they should be taught to flag.
@Takkat There is a point in downvoting. Downvoting spam helps take it off the main page faster, which is inherently good, because the point of spam is to be seen.
@jokerdino can it be, that a spam flag adds a downvote but a user can still downvote again to sum up to 2 downvotes? This would ecplain a lot.
@Takkat yep
14:09
It's better for spam to exist longer but be seen shorter than to exist shorter but get more people to read and click on its links.
@Takkat Yeah, I always flag spam, and usually downvote it also.
i been doing that until the diamond.
The main purpose of spam on AU is to get people to click on the flag button ;)
3
lol
and get badges
tasty tasty badges
I wonder how many people actually did click on that links on the spams we get. I am more concerned what happens if these spammer become more intelligent and write seemingly possible answers with "links" to check out. This will be dangerous then.

@Seth Fancy!
And apparently my friends are dicks.
While I wasn't watching my PC, they added a startup script to set the speaker volume to max and run Taylor Swift.
@FEichinger LOL
@Seth This is no laughing matter!
And why not?
Because I don't like being greeted with "I knew you were trouble" and crap like that.
It was a funny joke. It's over now and everyone can have a good laugh. I don't see what the matter is...
18:05
I am no jokes person! ò.ó
Nah, my problem with this really just is that touching my PC is a sin.
Ah. Eliah is editing the edit I am editing...
And that made me lose review credit. lol.
@FEichinger That is true.
Make sure you only have friends you can trust.
I thought I did. Apparently I was wrong. In which case the music makes sense, ironically.
lol.
I have a lot of old config files in my home folder...
Maybe that's why I'm running out of space..
18:24
Possibly. Probably not, but possibly.
I already cleared out over 1Gb of space.
Can you make sense of this? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/99694
18:46
@Seth They were trying to give the url bleachbit.sourceforge.net (see the markdown version).
It seems like it was an attempt to respond to the post and not to edit it. It looks like maybe they tried to use []() style markdown in the edit reason itself.
There's a [ at the beginning of the edit reason, with no closing ].
But then at the very beginning of the body, they added: ][1]
Right, I noticed that..
But I don't understand the point.
With ` [1]: bleachbit.sourceforge.net` at the very end.
They were probably trying to say that bleachbit could be used to reset the thumbnail cache.
That edit suggestion was rightly rejected.
Probably..
Maybe it should have been a separate answer.
I don't really know what their full intentions were.
There is already a (half )answer about bleachbit there.
1
A: How do I reset the thumbnail cache?

JonBleachBit can wipe your thumbnail cache, I believe. Not sure how to blacklist a folder from getting thumbnails, though.

Yes.. That should be enough since we don't know any more details..

@Seth how you are doing?
today I am trying to use a folder lock kind of option for trying to protect/private few folders.
do you have any suggestions for that? have you used any folder lock find of option?

@VRU I haven't ever tried to lock a folder before.. But it's possible.

truecrypt or ecryptfs are the generally acceptable "this will usually work" options.
just saying.
I have to run right now, but I think that's because there have been changes to the tray in 12.10.
VRU
VRU
@TheLordofTime Okay will try one among them
@Seth Okay no issues, by the way I am 12.04
it requires a little bit more stuff to make it, but otherwise it usually just "works" once you get the hang of it
VRU
VRU
@TheLordofTime Okay. Just asking, have you used any of them?
recently, no, because my entire hard drive is encrypted anyways. And you need a smart card to unlock the drive, and only I have that.
but in the past, I've used ecryptfs, back in 10.04's day
VRU
VRU
20:12
@TheLordofTime oh that's nice. I have a doubt here, if I use any of those application and some one got to my system with root login, can he just explore the protected folder?
from terminal using the root loginn
been a while since i used it, i can't easily answer you.
but if its an ecryptfs, it encrypts the folder.
and i mena "encrypts"
i.e. if you lose your access code too, you're screwed.

Oh Okay.
fine thanks ... may be I will try that tomorrow. Later. Bye
