13:14
good morning!
morning Jorge :)
13:25
good morning Mister Castro :)
Hi all - I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with a problem I just had: I run Xubuntu 12.04. I just installed all the updates, and after the required restart, my computer no longer recognizes my AMD graphics card, and thus won't use the correct resolution of my monitor.
@DavidOneill What happens if you hold down the Shift key while starting up your computer, then select an old kernel version in the GRUB menu?
/me tries that.
huh - the GRUB menu knows enough to use the full resolution...
ok, the older kernel version did work
wait :( it worked for a bit, then the monitor said "adjusting" and it's wrong again
@DavidOneill The problem is likely with the newer kernel, then. I recommend reporting the bug against the new kernel. The best way to do this is probably to boot with the kernel that is not working properly, and run ubuntu-bug linux. Make sure to describe the problem thoroughly in the bug report. Before reporting any bugs in Ubuntu, I recommend reading this thoroughly.
@DavidOneill Oh. Darn.
Is that what happened before?
it's not quite the same
13:34
@DavidOneill How is it different?
Also, are there any options for alternative drivers in Additional Drivers?
here's a more detailed history: 1st try with the newly updated kernel, the logon screen was the smaller screen resolution
when i first rebooted into the older kernel version, the logon screen was the full (old) resolution
i logged in, and after about 5 seconds, the screen "adjusted"
now, I can only see the same % of the screen as I could with the old set up, although I think X thinks I still have the full resolution, because I currently (old kernel) can't see the task bar at the bottom of the screen
when I try to run the AMD setting software, I get the message "No AMD graphics driver is installed or the AMD driver is not functioning properly"
/me checks for additional drivers
boot probably uses a pre-defined image. So it might look correct but it is not driver dependent.
there's only 1 listed (the ATI/AMD driver), but it's listed as inactive. I'll try activating it.
(I know I had to change a file in a release or beta to have a correctly visible boot screen)
@DavidOneill and then the problem was fixed >:D
that did it! Thanks :)
13:49
see! my esper capabilities worked flawlessly :=)
those questions could use votes and reviews ^

Q: how to use different package manager in ubuntu?

s.mI want to use different package management in ubuntu. Instead of APT i would like to use pacman or RPM in ubuntu. Is it possible to customize ubuntu for this purpose? I want to customize ubuntu fully and want to change DE, WM and even package manangement How to do this?

16:21
@fossfreedom Are you around ATM?
I just wanted to let you know, you can ignore my last NAA flag.
After a second look it's probably OK to leave it.
ok. cheers
Thanks :)
16:36
hm, to hell with this. i installed ubuntu on an external and I am back :)
o_o ... what happened? what were you trying to do?
my internal died.
HDD
welcome back!
big usb external?
16:44
it's a 1 TB drive.
I note prices of HDD have dramatically dropped lately - should be easy and cheap to pick one up.
how 'lately'?
bought a 320Gb 2.5inch for £35 on amazon.
3 weeks ago
that sure is lately.
i checked prices 4 months ago and it wasn't dropping.
maybe time to scourge through.
I was thinking of getting a NAS
but it would have to be one I can install extra packages on
16:46
there isn't any immediate impact on my external, is there?
@jokerdino any immediate impact of what?
installing ubuntu and running from it.
@jokerdino no impact - just will be a bit on the slow side over USB2
ah, that is great news
i guess i can bring ubuntu everywhere now.
@jokerdino when I boot from USB stick - I use lubuntu - unity is not nice on USB
16:55
ah, good idea.
i am about to upgrade to raring. will install DE after that.
its that time ... bbl

Q: Why is creating Hurd taking so long when Linux was ready in 1992?

DerfderI don't get it. Why Hurd cannot be done after more than 20 years from making Linux part of GNU/Linux . Could anybody tell me why Linus could do it basicaly by himself in a year or so.\ and they cannot do that in almost 30 years? For moderators: Btw. Why there is no hurd tag in tags options t...

VTC: OT that;
Already done.
oh you.
17:01
Maybe joker will finish it?
Why do we need a hurd tag? Tags are only made when someone has a good question that should be tagged with it. — Seth 1 min ago

Yup.
I think a Hurd SO site would be a GREAT idea.

absolutely.

Another rude comment. Better leave that one though.

@jokerdino the page or the comment?

I earned that on meta... but not here. Hope I never do!
@Seth comment. but the page got nuked.
@jokerdino Well the OP didn't nuke it.

Heh. Interesting.
interesting. i thought twitter rss was dead.
@jokerdino I fixed it. I even pinged you about it :P

No worries ;)

@jrg are you still involved with kandan?

@JorgeCastro do you know how i can get bug control rights over a ubuntu package i co-maintain?

can you switch it on for me please?
I need to put you in bugcontrol

@GeorgeEdison Wowee. Congrats!
Thanks, guys!

Heya folks
19:35
Just got an email from somebody that wants to bundle their toolbar with my installers.
I don't think so...
19:47
@GeorgeEdison One word: DON'T.
I won't.
If I find software that tries to add other things to my computer it really lowers my estimation in that software and its creator.
20:00
Yeah, I totally agree with you.
20:16
@vasa1 I already suggested that we should have a canonical question about it. As this is the only post in the site, it shouldn't be closed/removed. Instead of create a new post, you can improved it editing.

Q: Where did my Reputation go?

packpatfanI had over 200 reputation and now (next to my username) it says I have only around 170!? Is this a bug, cause it has happened before to me. I have received no warnings about anything going weird, so what is up? I like my reputation :(

Do we have a step by step guide/post about how to create a LiveUSB from Mac?

Q: Installing Ubuntu to an Imac via USB

bmartin4I'm attempting to install Ubuntu to a imac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) via USB. I've seen this guide. Plus countless other forum post to no avail but haven't been able to recognize it on startup, let alone actually get the thing to boot. Can someone provide me a good, up to date set of instructions...

@Lucio We did...
I read this external community guide. I mean here
@Seth link?
Looking...

I just said, so you don't forget ;)

Q: Create USB installer from the command line?

j-g-faustusI'm trying to create a bootable USB image to install Ubuntu on a new computer. I have done this before following the "create USB drive" instructions for Ubuntu desktop, but I don't have an Ubuntu desktop available. How can I do the same using only the command line? Things I've tried: Create ...

that might be the best it gets...
I now have Git/libiconv/cURL/OpenSSL compiled for Android.
1
A: Ubuntu "USB for OS X" instructions don't create bootable USB drive

DuncanmooSpent half the day on this but finally have a solution: The application unetbootin will quite happily open up the iso file, extract everything and create a bootable USB stick.

that too. VTR it while you are at it.
@Seth I didn't see it before.
@Seth Yeah, the answer in this post are quiet not AU stile :)
Thank you, I created a comment there
Well hopefully it will help some.
20:40
yup
@Seth BTW, any good news in your programming world?
No not really. I haven't had much time to work on anything recently :(
@jrg Hey! I have one C# question for you :P
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro yes, i am.
lol.
jrg
jrg
@Lucio uh, no.
just no.
20:43
haha, it's not about code
@jrg that's what I say about Ruby :P
is more about how
Go on.
@Seth Regarding that VTR: Are you sure UNetbootin (even the OS X version) creates USB flash drives that are bootable on a Mac?
@EliahKagan Pretty sure.
jrg
jrg
20:44
@Lucio there is no how in C#, just why.
No way I can ever tell... but it should. Anyway, we don't want that question floating around unanswered.
@Seth UNetbootin's official site says otherwise. Under Requirements: "Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, or Linux, or Mac OS X 10.5+. Note that resulting USB drives are bootable only on PCs (not on Macs)."
@jrg You are directly contradicting Jon Skeet's reputation.
@EliahKagan em. Good find.
@Seth That's why the Ubuntu site provides so technically demanding instructions instead.
jrg
jrg
@Seth Ahem, no.
20:47
@EliahKagan Conclusion: Don't buy a mac.
@Seth Alternatively the Ubuntu project could start providing an .img file (or .dmg file) also. Considering that we provide a special mac version of the amd64 ISO, providing a .img or .dmg would probably be reasonable.
Hello @packpatfan
hey @Seth
@jrg Can you tell us why @packpatfan 's reputation suddenly fell? He can't figure it out from his reputation history.
20:53
@jrg This relates to Where did my reputation go?
@jrg Do I need to buy a Windows OS to program in C#?
@Lucio No.
@Luci0 --> Nope, at least I don't think so, seeing as C/C++ programming works fine
But it's much Easier, both when learning and coding.
@Lucio No. Depending on what you need to do, you might need Windows (but then, that's true for any programming language--if you need features that are provided only in Windows, you need Windows). You can use Mono on Ubuntu. (Or GNU Portable .NET.) You can use the Monodevelop IDE.
20:57
ah
Any C# code (basic, intermediate and advanced) will work running in Ubuntu?
@Lucio Ehh.. Not that easy.
Including creating a program with GUI (window)?
@packpatfan C# is a Microsoft product (for the most part)
@Lucio That's the big issue.. I've never tried myself so idk how well Mono.NET works.
@Lucio Not all language features are supported. Most are. When the next version of C# comes out (and I mean this perpetually, not just the next version), it will take time for CLR's like Mono to implement it, and more time to implement it in a way that works sufficiently the same as Microsoft's CLR.

Trolling attempt?
kinda looks like that
@guntbert Why do you think that?
@EliahKagan I know that, but I will be able to run the programs with a set of windows without problems in Ubuntu?
All of those plus's and 9s...kinda looks like that
@Lucio Mono supports Windows Forms. (You should be aware that there's no ECMA standard or covenant not to sue associated with Windows Forms though, so Windows Forms implementations might one day be imperiled in civil court, somewhere.)
21:00
@packpatfan That's just part of his problem.
@EliahKagan That is what I was looking
@Seth, in IRC we often see trolling attempts which try to bind ressources - with fake problems
@guntbert I'm not saying it isn't a trolling attempt, but if it is only time will show.
@Seth --> I suppose, but it looks a little too constantly plus's and nines
@Lucio If you write your program to work with Mono (or GNU Portable .NET), it should work with that implementation. But no, going from one implementation to another, you will likely encounter some incompatibilities. If you want your program to run well on Windows with the Windows CLR, you do need to test it with that (or have someone do so). Similarly, if you want it to run well with Mono, you need to test it with that.
You should keep in mind that Mono does exist for Windows--if necessary, you can make your program specifically dependent on Mono even in Windows.
21:02
@packpatfan and occasional a's
@Seth, of course :-) (and then there is my 7th sense for trolls :-))
@guntbert And he has certain sections where it is fine, so i'd agree with @Seth...just wait
@guntbert ;)
@DanHulme -->Nice
@packpatfan, of course we wait! But it may make sense to have an eye on it, that's why I mentioned it here
21:03
@guntbert --> Did you notice that the post was edited? Maybe someone spammed the post??? Dunno, I'm not a mod :D
@guntbert I don't think we should assume that's trolling. It's possible, of course. But such bugs can happen. I remember a bug that caused X11 to terminate when specific keys were pressed on the keyboard. While this is a bug (assuming it is happening), it might make sense to try to help them work around it rather than immediately closing the question, since they can't really write and submit a good bug report this way (though I suppose they can manually remove the extra characters).
Yeah, and what about the edit??
I think that the comments of @packpatfan are trolls. Why you add '-->' to all of them?
:P
@EliahKagan That is, unless their backspace key inserts apostrophes.
@Lucio lol... :P
I add those
jk
@packpatfan What about it? Also, which edit are you talking about? There have been two.
@EliahKagan I did in no way imply it should be closed, only maybe have an eye on it
@Seth There's always the delete key.
@guntbert Yes, I understand. Though arguably it could be closed, as an off-topic bug.
21:05
@EliahKagan Which hopefully doesn't do something drastic :P
yes, I just think that he should have edited the post too...?
@EliahKagan Thanks for all your information. Now I have it very clear
Unfortunately, I will have to program using Windows. :( I must approve Laboratory 3
@packpatfan, btw you could try to assume good faith before jumping on someone (I am talking about the picture stitching) -
Even so, I'd lay 5 to 4 he spilt coffee on his keyboard
21:30
@guntbert --> Yeah, sorry about that and the Windows thing-jibber too.
22:13
Looks dupish:

Q: How can I install Windows XP alongside Ubuntu on an External HDD?

NilThis may seem like a duplicate of a question asked 100 times over, but I feel that this is unique in some respects. bitcoins are fun. just saying.
what are bitcoins?
BEFORE i get into ubuntu mode :P
how do you not know about bitcoins
Bitcoin (sign: BTC) is a decentralized digital currency based on an open-source, peer-to-peer internet protocol. It was introduced by a pseudonymous developer named Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Internationally, bitcoins can be exchanged by personal computer directly through a wallet file or a website without an intermediate financial institution. In trade, one bitcoin is subdivided into 100 million smaller units called satoshis, defined by eight decimal places. Bitcoin does not operate like typical currencies: it has no central bank and it solely relies on an internet-based peer-to-pe...
